MON MON 12:00 Composer of the Week b00t27kb (Listen) MON Amy Beach (1867-1944), Episode 1 MON MON Not just a "woman composer" but one of the most original, MON distinctive and gifted American musicians of the early 20th MON century. Donald Macleod explores the music of Amy Beach MON (1867-1944). MON MON More than a generation after her death at the venerable age MON of 77, Amy March Beach (née Cheney) is still dogged by a MON single phrase: "female composer". MON MON Once upon a time, it was used by male critics as to MON criticise her supposedly 'inferior' music - now, in a MON postmodern, post-feminist age, Beach's life and output is MON endlessly reappraised for its symbolism - the achievement of MON a pioneering woman in a world of men - rather than for her MON remarkable musical abilities. MON MON In truth, Amy Beach's life and work are extraordinary, MON regardless of her gender: arguably the first truly MON "American" voice to emerge from a continent still struggling MON to break free from the shackles of the European classical MON tradition. MON MON Donald Macleod explores her journey from the tranquil MON meadows of New England to her headline-grabbing early MON successes as a virtuoso piano prodigy in Boston - and her MON burning childhood desire to compose. We'll hear complete MON performances and extended excerpts from her collection of MON large-scale symphonic works, including her "Grand Mass" in E MON Flat, and "Gaelic" Symphony, as well as a rare performance MON of Beach's chamber opera, "Cabildo". MON MON We'll also hear a number of works composed at the Macdowell MON Colony - a remarkable artists' retreat amidst the woodlands MON of New Hampshire where the middle-aged Mrs Beach, MON remarkably, assimilated a host of modern musical techniques MON into her expressive late-Romantic style. MON MON Also spanning across the week are a number of Amy Beach's MON songs, from opus 1 to 152 - perhaps her finest and most MON lasting achievement, full of examples of her gift for MON intense, lyrical melody. MON MON In the first episode of this week's series, Donald Macleod MON examines Beach's gargantuan "Grand Mass" in E Flat - the MON first to be composed by an American woman - and charts the MON composer's journey from piano prodigy to respected composer MON (and 'respectable wife'). But for centuries this culture, centred on TUE the great trading port of Trebizond on the caravan route to TUE Persia, was living on borrowed time. The 1923 exchange of TUE populations between modern Greece and Turkey, resulting from TUE the Lausanne Treaty, gave rise to the Pontic nationality TUE splitting amongst multiple citizenships. The shepherds in TUE the high mountains behind the city of Trebizond who for more TUE than a thousand years had driven their flocks up onto the TUE high plateau in summer and back to the narrow coastal plain TUE in winter, sometimes adopting a Christian persona, sometimes TUE a Muslim one, disappeared and the economy has never really TUE recovered. The architectural jewel that was Trabzon has TUE become tower blocks. The final insult came five years ago TUE with the much opposed construction of a coastal motorway TUE which has chopped this once great maritime city off from the TUE Black Sea. The isolation that kept ancient cultures TUE protected has gone. TUE TUE Tom de Waal traces some of what has been lost to the Soumela TUE Monastery where every August 15th people of Pontic descent TUE from across the globe come to remember the feast of the TUE Virgin. Here there is a collision of Russian Turkish and TUE Greek interests which provides a lesson in modern regional TUE politics. But connecting all of these disparate people is TUE music: the Greek Lyre and the Turkish Kemence. They play the TUE same, they dance the same. Culturally connected and TUE politically divided this is a story of people who are really TUE cousins, or even brothers, but cannot quite bring themselves TUE to admit it. TUE TUE (Repeat.) Three contemporary British poets each choose a TUE single poem or extract by Tennyson and give a personal TUE account of why it means so much to them. TUE TUE The Welsh poet Gwyneth Lewis thought she had outgrown TUE Tennyson around the time she did her O Levels. In fact, she TUE was slightly embarrassed by her youthful rapture for what TUE she considered his shallow Arthurian romances. Then, living TUE on a boat off a small Spanish town, she was unexpectedly TUE re-introduced to Tennyson by a local swimming pool TUE attendant, and newly discovered his hidden depths. Her TUE chosen poem is The Kraken - a legendary sea-monster TUE inhabiting the "ancient, dreamless, uninvaded sleep" of the TUE un-chartered ocean, which, when ultimately it rises to the TUE surface, is destined to die. THU Who would have expected, then, that aged 54, the composer THU would begin a remarkable new direction in her musical life, THU centred upon the idyllic Macdowell Colony - an artists' THU retreat deep in the New Hampshire woods. THU THU There, Amy Beach composed an outpouring of evocative chamber THU works, fusing her own lyrical expression with more modern THU elements to create a uniquely personal musical style. THU THU 22:15 Sunday Feature b00qn3mt (Listen) THU Sinan the Magnificent THU THU Koca Mimar Sinan was court architect to one of the most THU powerful dynasties the world has known: the Ottoman Empire THU in the sixteenth century. Responsible for some four hundred THU sublime and inventive buildings throughout Turkey, the THU Balkans and the Middle East he is virtually unknown in the THU West. Why is this? THU THU Architectural journalist Jonathan Glancey tells Sinan's THU astonishing story. THU THU Born a Christian in crumbling Anatolia, Sinan converted to THU Islam and was taken into the Janissary Corps which fought to THU extend the Ottoman Empire. He participated in the campaign THU for Rhodes in the 1520s, learning to build rapidly and well THU - catapults, mosques and caravanserais, all the structures a THU vast army needed. The experience would stand him in good THU stead when he became chief architect to Sultan Suleiman I THU soon after. THU THU Sinan's best known work is perhaps the Suleiman Mosque in THU Istanbul. But he also created madrassas, bathhouses and THU viaducts. Influenced by the Byzantine buildings that THU surrounded him in Constantinople, it is also likely that he THU had contact with the designs of Renaissance figures THU including Michelangelo, who was his contemporary. But did THU the artistic dialogue go both ways? Did Sinan's reputation THU reach into Western Europe through the strong links between THU the Ottoman Empire and Italy in particular? It's a THU tantalizing thought which the programme explores. THU THU Producer: THU Jane Beresford. Beethoven's Third concerto FRI is more turbulent than those that precede it, and it shows a FRI more experimental side of Beethoven's musical language. FRI FRI The concert opens with music by John Foulds who had a varied FRI life as a musician - as a cellist with the Halle, as a FRI conductor, a cinema pianist, and a composer of both serious FRI and light music. He had a fascination for Indian music and FRI mysticism, and this had an impact on his work. In this FRI symphonic poem he evokes a spring day. FRI FRI In the final work Strauss places himself at the forefront of FRI his epic tone poem, casting himself as the central heroic FRI figure and portraying his own life as a struggle against FRI adversity.
