MON MON 12:00 Composer of the Week b04brk6s (Listen) MON Cole Porter (1891-1964), Be a Clown MON MON He was one of the most famous Broadway composers of his MON time, and many of his songs remain popular today, this week MON Donald Macleod explores the life and music of Cole Porter. MON On his deathbed, Porter said to a close friend, "I don't MON know how I did it". His remarkable achievements include a MON huge catalogue of witty, sophisticated, and sometimes risqué MON songs, plus a raft of successful shows like Anything Goes, MON Can-Can and, his most popular musical, Kiss Me Kate. The MON opulence of these lavish productions was matched by Porter's MON glamorous lifestyle; the parties were legendary, and his MON apartment at the Waldorf Hotel was photographed for Vogue MON magazine. Yet there were parts of his life that Cole Porter MON needed to shield from public view; he lived at a time when MON being gay was not considered acceptable. MON MON Cole Porter was born in Peru, Indiana, where his father ran MON a drugstore. His maternal grandfather was something of a MON tyrant, but also one of the richest men in the state. It was MON Porter's mother, Katie, who encouraged her son in music, and MON she who published his first song, from 1901. MON Porter scraped through his college years, graduating in MON 1913. His mind was on other things than his education, MON including the composition of four musicals and over one MON hundred songs. Porter was refining his ability to write MON witty patter songs, including I've a Shooting Box in MON Scotland from 1916, and When I Had a Uniform On, also known MON as the Demobilisation Song. MON MON Cole Porter's activities during the First World War are MON somewhat sketchy. He journeyed to France where he acquired a MON number of uniforms, including a colonel's which he wore with MON total disregard for the regulations. In Paris, Porter held a MON number of lavish parties, and it was there that he met the MON American divorcee who would become his wife. TUE TUE Cole Porter and his wife Linda were spending much of their TUE time in Venice, where they rented a majestic palace on the TUE Grand Canal for $4,000 a week. They organised legendary TUE parties, including shipping over a Jazz band from America to TUE play on a barge in the lagoon. Porter was determined to TUE pursue his career as a composer, but producers were wary of TUE him. His rich and lavish lifestyle gave the impression that TUE Porter was a dabbler, not to be trusted. He did contribute a TUE number of songs for the American show, Greenwich Village TUE Follies, including Two Little Babes in the Wood, and I'm In TUE Love Again. By the time the show went on tour, all his songs TUE had been dropped. TUE TUE By the late 1920s, Porter was achieving international TUE success. THU THU 12:00 Composer of the Week b04brp0t (Listen) THU Cole Porter (1891-1964), Something for the Boys THU THU He was one of the most famous Broadway composers of his THU time, and many of his songs still live on in our THU consciousness today, this week Donald Macleod explores the THU life and music of Cole Porter. THU THU Cole Porter suffered a serious riding accident which left THU him with two crushed legs. His wife, Linda, demanded that THU his doctors save both Porter's legs, as she feared that an THU amputation would finish him. As Porter recuperated, he THU worked on the show Leave It To Me, followed by Du Barry Was THU A Lady. Reviewers in the UK reckoned that this second show THU wasn't the best of Cole Porter, but they did concede that THU even his second best was very good. THU THU The Second World War was now underway, but Porter continued THU to hold lavish entertainments, including pool parties where THU a number of attractive servicemen would always be invited THU along. His new musical, Something For The Boys, starred THU Ethel Merman and included one of Porter's popular patter THU songs, By the Mississinewah. THU THU Porter also became romantically involved with the dancer and THU choreographer, Nelson Barclift. Linda Porter was aware of THU her husband's homosexuality but, as long as it was kept THU private, she didn't mind. As Porter's affairs became more of THU an open secret around hollywood, their relationship became a THU little cool. However, the 1940s were to bring Porter his THU greatest success ever, with a show the critics had THU originally forecast would be a total flop, Kiss Me Kate. Scored for organ and an THU orchestra calling for no fewer than 10 trumpets (six THU offstage), the Festival Prelude packs symphonic weight into THU its brief duration. THU It is matched for impact by the Deutsche Motette - a THU concerto for choir by any other name: its vocal lines trace THU the same expansive arcs and arabesques as the composer's THU exquisite, autumnal Four Last Songs. Maintaining the mood of THU late-Romantic nostalgia, Elgar's Second Symphony delights in THU flexible chromaticism, its shifting moods coloured in THU delicate shades.
