SUN SUN 21:15 Sunday Feature b018nr4z (Listen) SUN Dee SUN SUN Across heaths, sands and marshes, poet Paul Farley explores SUN the geography of the imagination inspired by the River Dee. SUN From its source in the mountains of Snowdonia, through the SUN borderlands of England and Wales and down to the estuary SUN opening out to the Irish Sea he reflects on the allure of SUN what John Milton called the 'wizard stream'. SUN SUN The lower reaches of the Dee have nearly silted up and SUN marshland covers its wide banks from which Roman legions SUN once sailed, passengers embarked to Ireland and, further SUN upriver, where Chester was founded. The nearby River Mersey SUN had not yet been stirred into commercial life when the Dee SUN was in full swing centuries ago. For Farley, born in SUN Liverpool and a pleasure tripper to the Dee in his SUN childhood, he always saw it as the Mersey's 'shadow river'. SUN SUN In this river biography he searches for the true spirit of SUN the Dee. Deep in North Wales, he seeks out the source of SUN what the Celts called Deva - the waters of divinity - above SUN Bala Lake at a place, in the ruins of a chapel, not on any SUN map. He passes through the rapids of Llangollen a place of SUN outstanding beauty haunted by death where folk songs of SUN suicide in its black waters still echo today. He visits Holt SUN where the Dee becomes the (once fractious) national border SUN and where HG Wells, author of War of the Worlds, worked as a SUN school teacher. He crosses Burton marshes with a wildfowler SUN at dawn, tracing migrations of birds. Finally, he reflects SUN on Milton's great elegy 'Lycidas' on Hilbre Island, where SUN the Dee meets the sea and where Milton's great friend Edward SUN King was drowned. A monastic cell used to inhabit Hilbre SUN Island when it was a point of pilgrimage. Today, Paul finds SUN a different kind of brotherhood looking after the island. SUN SUN Producer Neil McCarthy. TUE TUE He based his opera on the Maurice Maeterlinck's play about TUE Duke Bluebeard's wife Ariane - written a few years after his TUE 'Pelleas and Melisande' for which both Sibelius and Faure TUE composed incidental music (you can hear Faure's tomorrow, TUE while Sibelius's was broadcast in Afternoon on 3 yesterday). TUE TUE Ariane arrives at Duke Bluebeard's castle as his his new TUE wife, and the duke gives her the keys to six doors which in TUE this version of the tale open to reveal jewels and untold TUE riches. The Duke tells Ariane never to open the seventh TUE door, with its golden key. Of course she can't resist this TUE and when she discovers the hidden door, it opens to release TUE Bluebeard's previous wives. This all happens in Act One, and TUE in the remainder of the opera with Ariane encourages the TUE previous wives to revolt against their cruel husband. TUE Eventually they do capture and subdue the Duke, but only TUE Ariane has the nerve to walk away: the other wives cannot TUE leave Bluebeard, preferring to live with him despite his TUE cruelty. TUE TUE The Duke's role in this version of the opera (as opposed to TUE Bartok's better known version which we'll hear on Thursday) TUE is quite small. THU THU Maurice Maeterlinck's play 'Ariane and Bluebeard' inspired THU first Paul Dukas's opera (broadcast in Afternoon on 3 on THU Tuesday) and then the Hungarian writer Bela Balazs, who THU radically adapted the story as a libretto for his friend THU Bela Bartok. The result is a far briefer, more psychological THU drama than Dukas' extended feminist treatment. Bartok THU concentrates on the device of the locked doors which forms THU only the start of the Dukas opera, but evokes such a THU claustrophic and intense atmosphere that everything is THU loaded on to the two characters: the Duke and his latest in THU a line of wives - Judith. THU THU Continuing our theme of British theatre music is Constant THU Lambert's ballet music wound around the signs of the zodiac, THU premiered in London in 1938. And, since it's still the THU pantomime season (oh yes it is!) Penny rounds off the THU afternoon with Frenchman Jean Francaix's lighthearted music THU for a ballet of Hans Christian Andersen's 'The Emperor's New THU Clothes'. FRI FRI 14:00 Afternoon on 3 b018ntg5 (Listen) FRI Music for the Theatre, Episode 8 FRI FRI Penny Gore rounds off the week by presenting the BBC's FRI orchestras in some famous Nordic theatre music - plus more FRI from Britain. FRI FRI WB Yeats co-wrote the play 'Grania and Diarmid' - and asked FRI Elgar for some incidental music, which he duly delivered: it FRI begins the programme today. FRI FRI Danish composer Carl Nielsen had spent the summer of 1918 FRI writing music for 'Aladdin' to be performed at the Royal FRI Theatre in Copenhagen the following February. Imagine his FRI annoyance when he arrived at the theatre to find that half FRI the orchestra pit had disappeared to accomodate an extended FRI stage, and that the orchestra would have to sit on the stage FRI and perform from under the 'staircase' set. If that wasn't FRI bad enough the theatre producer then proceeded to cut and FRI re-order large chunks of the music. Nielsen had enough and FRI removed his name from the production's posters and FRI programmes. FRI FRI Perhaps Nielsen should have let Sibelius know about his FRI problems, as the same theatre and same producer approached FRI Sibelius for music for a production of Shakespeare's 'The FRI Tempest' in 1925. However, perhaps it was the producer who FRI had learnt his lesson as this was a far more successful FRI production. One review said: 'Shakespeare and Sibelius - at FRI last these two geniuses have found one another'. Sibelius FRI composed his 'Tempest' score after his Seventh Symphony, and FRI along with Tapiola it was the last music Sibelius published.
