SAT SAT Riccardo Chailly SAT SAT In SAT this week's edition of Music Matters Tom Service interviews SAT Riccardo Chailly, SAT chief conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and SAT soon to be Principal SAT Conductor and Music Director of Milan's La Scala Opera SAT House SAT SAT Riccardo SAT Chailly was born into a musical family in Milan. At the age SAT of 20, he became SAT assistant conductor to Claudio Abbado at La Scala. He made SAT his opera debut SAT there in 1978 and has since held posts at many of the SAT world's finest SAT orchestras. SAT SAT Chailly SAT talks to Tom candidly about the challenges he faces in SAT ‘going home’ to the legendary SAT opera house as well as why he thinks opera companies give SAT too much licence to SAT director’s eccentricities and lose touch with the music. He SAT tells Tom why he SAT intends at La Scala to focus on what he believes made the SAT opera house great in SAT the first place – Italian opera. SAT SAT Having SAT recently completed two major and highly acclaimed recording SAT projects with the SAT Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra – his Beethoven and Brahms SAT symphony cycles – he SAT talks to Tom about what he has left to do with the SAT orchestra, what he feels he SAT achieved with them and how he got them to totally rethink SAT the music of both SAT composers, despite their initial reservations. SAT SAT Chailly SAT also talks about the impact his mentor Claudio Abbado had SAT on his career, his SAT enduring love for Giacomo Puccini and how he believes SAT Puccini’s music has more SAT in common with Mahler’s symphonies than meets the eye. SAT SAT The story of the wife of George SAT I is a tragic tale of abuse and political intrigue. The SAT woman who should have been Queen of Great Britain spent more SAT than thirty years, a prisoner in a moated stately home in SAT Northern Germany, and never set foot in the country. SAT SAT Lucy Worsley recounts her story, juxtaposed with a selection SAT of music linked or associated with the Duchess. Including SAT music by JS Bach, Steffani and Handel. SAT SAT 16:00 Jazz Line-Up b04p50yx (Listen) SAT Nat Birchall Quintet SAT SAT Claire Martin presents concert music by saxophonist Nat SAT Birchall and his quintet recorded at the Vortex Jazz Club, SAT London. SAT SAT 18:15 Opera on 3 b04p50z1 (Listen) SAT Donizetti's Les Martyrs SAT SAT Donizetti's unjustly neglected Les Martyrs, revived at the SAT Royal Festival Hall by Opera Rara and the Orchestra of the SAT Age of Enlightenment, conducted by Mark Elder. SAT SAT Presented by Ivan Hewett and Simon Rees. SAT Polyeucte.....Michael Spyres (tenor) SAT Pauline.....Joyce El-Khoury (soprano) SAT Sévère..... Wynne Evans (tenor) SAT Opera Rara Chorus SAT Renato Balsadonna (chorus director) SAT Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment SAT Sir Mark Elder (conductor) SAT SAT Les Martyrs was Donizetti's first grand opera for Paris. It SAT was based on his Italian work, Poliuto, written for Naples SAT but banned there because of its religious content. SAT Donizetti, well aware his new Paris opera was an important SAT international debut, went to enormous pains to adapt Les SAT Martyrs for the French stage, adding an elaborate new SAT overture, the obligatory ballet score, and - most SAT importantly - several complex and musically innovative SAT ensemble scenes. The end result is one of the composer's SAT most challenging and musically varied scores, with a level SAT of orchestral and harmonic detail not found in his more SAT popular Italian operas. SAT Les Martyrs soon disappeared from the Paris Opéra's SAT repertory, although it had some circulation in an Italian SAT version in the mid 19th century. Since then, however, it has SAT very rarely been heard. SAT In this revival by Opera Rara Les Martyrs is performed on SAT period instruments by the Orchestra of the Age of SAT Enlightenment and with singers adept at the particular SAT demands of French grand opera at this period. Sir Mark Elder SAT conducts, restoring to life one of Donizetti's most SAT remarkable and most unjustly neglected late operas. SAT SAT Recorded 4th November 2014. SAT SAT 22:00 Hear and Now b04p50z3 (Listen) SAT Elliott Carter, Ian Wilson, Liza Lim SAT SAT Poetry is the spur for music written towards the end of SAT Elliott Carter's long life, recorded at the BBC Scottish SAT Symphony Orchestra's Carter retrospective earlier this year. SAT SAT Carter's 'Symphonia sum fluxae SAT pretium spei' is a product of his ninth decade. It's a SAT three-movement, forty-five minute orchestral tour de force SAT inspired by seventeenth-century English poet Richard SAT Crawshaw's conceit of observing human life from a bubble SAT floating in the air. An image from William Carlos Williams's SAT 'Rain' permeates Carter's 2002 'Boston Concerto'. 'As the SAT rain falls so does your love bathe every open object of the SAT world' provokes shimmering orchestration from Carter and a SAT dedication to his wife, Helen. SAT SAT Next month Ian Wilson celebrates reaching a mere half SAT century. 'Causeway' is the final part of a trilogy SAT reflecting aspects of Wilson's native Northern Ireland. SAT Here, Northern Ireland's geology is the starting point and SAT Wilson uses electronically-generated samples to evoke SAT shifting tectonic plates, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions SAT which pervade the orchestral texture, including a SAT concertante group of flute, oboe, horn and trumpet. SAT SAT And in Composers' Rooms, Sara Mohr-Pietsch visits Liza Lim's SAT Manchester home. SAT SAT Presented by Ivan Hewett SAT SAT Elliott Carter: Boston Concerto SAT BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra SAT Diego Masson, conductor SAT SAT Elliott Carter: Symphonia sum fluxae pretium spei SAT BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra SAT Ryan Wigglesworth, conductor SAT SAT Liza Lim: Diabolical Birds SAT Zurich New Music Ensemble SAT Jürg Henneberger, conductor SAT SAT Ian Wilson: Causeway SAT Ulster Orchestra SAT JoAnn Falletta, conductor. His SUN prize-winning books have sold over a million copies and have SUN been translated and published all over the world. His SUN Nottingham detective Charlie Resnick is SUN now so well known - after 12 novels, two television SUN adaptations and four radio plays - that he seems like a real SUN person: a brooding solitary sensitive man who has a passion SUN for ... listening to jazz. And this is where the fans come SUN in. Because for years now they have been sending Harvey SUN compilation tapes of the kind of jazz tracks that they think SUN Resnick would enjoy. So no surprise to discover that his SUN creator John Harvey has a lifelong love of jazz, conceived SUN during a misspent youth in London jazz clubs. SUN SUN As part of the jazz season across Radio 2 and 3, with SUN highlights from the London Jazz Festival, John Harvey SUN chooses his favourite jazz tracks. The playlist includes SUN early Billie Holliday, Thelonious Monk, James P. Johnson and SUN Chet Baker. Harvey, who's a fine poet as well as a crime SUN writer, reads a moving poem about Chet Baker's mysterious SUN death. Other music choices include Shostakovich, SUN Mendelssohn's 'Hebrides Overture', and a Tango for SUN corrugated iron by Jocelyn Pook. SUN SUN Harvey reveals that he dislikes how crime fiction has SUN changed during the 25 years he's been writing it: 'There SUN almost seems to be a competition who can have the most SUN disgusting things in their books, and what awful things you SUN can do particularly to female victims.' And he talks about SUN his decision to retire his detective Resnick, leaving him SUN sitting on a park bench, 'hankering after a fresh helping of SUN Thelonious Monk'. SUN SUN 17:30 Words and Music b01jyzf9 (Listen) SUN London SUN SUN Words and Music: London SUN SUN Words and Music celebrates the great capital city with music SUN and texts read by two distinguished London-born actors, Dame SUN Eileen Atkins and Sir David Jason. SUN SUN In many ways a city of SUN contradictions, Words and Music celebrates the Thames, the SUN church bells, the parks and the architecture, along with the SUN less salubrious side of the city - the overcrowding, the SUN noise and the stench which Londoners have complained about SUN for centuries. We view London through the eyes of its SUN chroniclers such as Daniel Defoe and John Evelyn, along with SUN eminent visitors to the city such as Handel and Haydn. There SUN are also references to key events in London's history - the SUN Fire, the Plague, the Blitz, and the terror of Jack the SUN Ripper. Above all, there is a sense of the love of the city SUN from the writings of authors and poets who lived there, SUN including Charles Dickens, George Orwell, T.S. Eliot and SUN John Keats. SUN SUN London has inspired many composers, and the readings are SUN accompanied by music by Vaughan Williams, Walton, Britten, SUN Haydn and Elgar. SUN SUN Producer: Ellie Mant. SUN SUN FREUD IN ASIA SUN SUN Christopher Harding explores the influence of Freud on SUN psychotherapy in Japan and India. Freud's travels around SUN Europe and the SUN USA a century ago catapulted psychotherapy to fame. SUN SUN The invitations to Japan and India came too late for him to SUN travel but he found his work debated throughout Asia. In SUN India he was discussed by British colonial officers, who SUN penned amateur tracts about Indian nationalism as mere SUN sexual trauma. SUN SUN Thousands of miles further east in Tokyo, Freud was SUN partnered with a medieval Buddhist saint in the hybrid SUN psychoanalytic technique of Heisaku Kosawa. Mishima read and SUN was influenced by his work. Christopher Harding explores the SUN spread of Freud's influence and its significance. SUN SUN A JOURNEY INTO THE FOREIGN LANGUAGE PHRASE BOOK SUN SUN John Gallagher focuses on the history of a long-overlooked SUN form of literature: the foreign language phrase book. The SUN British often assume that most people we meet abroad will SUN speak English - and many of them do. SUN SUN This was not the case three or four centuries ago, when the SUN Grand Tour became a rite of passage and an increasing number SUN of entrepreneurs forged trade links across Europe and SUN beyond. At that time English was a minority language. SUN SUN Phrase books and travel guides of the time reveal the SUN preoccupations of the day and, in the varied dialogues and SUN phrases they offered, reflect the needs of a variety of SUN travellers, be they tourists keen to visit the art of Italy SUN or the salons of Paris, merchants seeking to make deals in SUN Dutch marketplaces, or spies intent on learning the secrets SUN of continental powers.
