SAT As part of the Sound of Cinema season, he talks about the SAT music that has inspired him. SAT SAT The great British actor, one of the foremost "Draculas" of SAT the silver screen; star of The Lord of the Rings and the SAT Hobbit, and of countless British films, shares his passion SAT for music - and in particular opera - on Radio 3's Saturday SAT Classics; recorded as part of the BBC's Sound of Cinema SAT Season. As Sir Christopher says at the beginning of his SAT programme, "he is often asked to talk about his life in SAT film, but it is rare that he is given the opportunity to SAT indulge his passion, and links his with the world of opera". SAT His great grand-parent's family included professional opera SAT singers, living and working in Australia in the mid 19th SAT century (his great grandmother was known as the "Tasmanian SAT Nightingale"). It is from them that Christopher has SAT inherited his love of opera. Indeed, as Christopher Lee SAT tells us, very nearly pursued a career as an opera singer SAT himself, encouraged by the Swedish tenor Jüssi Bjorling who SAT over-heard him singing in a bar with some friends. SAT SAT Sir Christopher has chosen to present a selection of SAT recordings highlighting some of the finest voices of the SAT 20th century - some of whom he has known as friends. SUN SUN In various private and public collections in the UK he SUN discovered books with interesting inscriptions and SUN annotations - and he tried to construct a sort of "bookshelf SUN biography" which told the story of Wilde's life and literary SUN career through the books he read. The marginalia revealed a SUN lot about Wilde's influences, his tastes and his SUN relationships. But these books represented only a fraction SUN of those sold off in 1895. Some ended up in far flung SUN corners of the world and in this Sunday Feature, Thomas SUN Wright goes in search of Wilde's West Coast Collection. SUN SUN Tom begins his journey with Oscar Wilde fans in a gay bar in SUN Los Angeles before taking in the delights of Venice Beach SUN and travelling to the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library SUN where he discovers a collection of books which reveal some SUN less familiar aspects of Wilde's life, art and character. SUN SUN The books, housed in a giant vault to help protect the Oscar SUN Wilde markings and marginalia, include a compilation of SUN musical hall songs called Dans La Rue by Aristide Bruant - SUN the legendary singer-songwriter who had met Wilde during his SUN trip to Paris in 1891. SUN SUN There's Wilde's copy of Lord Ronald Gower's A Pocket Guide SUN to the Public and Private Galleries of Holland and Belgium SUN which reveals much about his passion for art, and some of SUN his artistic tastes. The notes in it attest to Wilde's keen SUN interest in painters such as Velasquez and Rembrandt. SUN SUN Thomas analyses some of Wilde's collection of the classics, SUN finds a copy of The Picture of Dorian Gray inscribed to Lord SUN Alfred Douglas and discovers new material about his Irish SUN nationalism and his links to Gladstone, Asquith and the SUN Liberal Party. He even finds a book that belonged to Wilde's SUN wife, Constance. SUN SUN "The most fascinating book I found in LA was Wilde's copy of SUN the "Eighty Club" pamphlet. Wilde's interest in SUN party-politics shows us an unfamiliar facet of his life - he SUN was a man who famously "lived more lives than one", and his SUN party-political life deserves to be appreciated along with SUN all the others," says Thomas Wright. "The book proved that SUN Wilde was an active member of a Liberal Party think-tank; SUN and that he socialised with the prominent members of the SUN party," he adds. SUN SUN Among those he meets during his journey are fellow Oscar SUN Wilde expert Tracey Connell and C Robert Holloway - SUN award-winning author of a novel in which he corresponds with SUN the ghost of Oscar Wilde. And to help analyse Wilde's West SUN Coast Collection, Thomas meets up with Oscar Wilde's SUN grandson - author, journalist and editor of Wilde's letters, SUN Merlin Holland. A philanthropist and doyenne of SUN the literati, she was also famed for having pulled a gun on SUN George Bernard Shaw when he made a pass at her! Votes for SUN Women was originally written as a novel - Robins having done SUN her research by interviewing women about their lives (this SUN forms the middle of the play, set at a rally in Trafalgar SUN Square). MON MON The Golden Age is one of the richest periods in cinematic MON history. It runs from the rise of talking pictures in the MON 1930s to a loose conclusion following the demise of the MON Hollywood studio system in the 1950s. An astonishing MON statistic of this era is the sheer number of films being MON produced. In its heyday, Hollywood was releasing around 400 MON pictures a year, creating not only a roster of stars MON including Errol Flynn, Bette Davis and Olivia de Havilland MON but also a remarkable collection of award winning scores, MON produced by the likes of Max Steiner, Franz Waxman, Erich MON Korngold, Dimitri Tiomkin, Miklos Rozsa, Alfred Newman and MON Bernard Herrmann. MON MON As a new medium, it fell to this first generation of MON composers to establish a formula for using music in MON "talkies". Given the ongoing aesthetic discussion over how MON sound should be used and the technical challenges as to how MON it might be achieved, writing film music was a demanding MON occupation. Time equalled money, so a composer needed to be MON versatile and write quickly, generally under pressure from MON the producer. On the plus side, help was on hand as MON facilities were in-house. THU THU First performed in 1848 Verdi's Il Corsaro, like Berlioz's THU overture and Petipa's ballet, is based on Lord Byron's poem THU The Corsaire. Verdi first expressed interest in the poem THU several years earlier but by the time Il Corsaro received THU its premiere in Trieste he had shown surprisingly little THU interest in the production and did not attend the opening THU night, which was poorly received. THU THU The action takes place in the Turkish city of Corone and on THU a Greek island in the Aegean where Corrado, the chief THU corsair, is in exile. On hearing of the threatening military THU plans of the Turkish Pasha Seid he sets forth with his men THU for Corone, leaving behind his heart-broken lover Medora. THU Despite an initial victory over Seid, and having caught the THU eye of the Pasha's favourite slave-girl Gulnara, Corrado is THU eventually imprisoned.
