Giovanni's HouseSAT
Martin Handley explores the importance of the famousSAT
Italian music publishing firm Casa Ricordi. ThroughoutSAT
most of the 19th and 20th centuries, the history ofSAT
Italian opera was directly tied to the fortunes of thisSAT
single family publishing house, based in Milan.SAT
SAT
The company was founded in 1808 by Giovanni Ricordi, aSAT
violinist who led the orchestra in a small MilaneseSAT
theatre. From very small beginnings, the business grewSAT
rapidly and in 1814 he won the exclusive right to publishSAT
all the music performed at La Scala, where he was aSAT
prompter. Ten years later he purchased the venue's entireSAT
archive, and by 1835 Ricordi boasted a catalogue of 10,000SAT
publications. These included most of the operas ofSAT
Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti.SAT
SAT
But the company's special relationship with Verdi andSAT
Puccini was especially significant. Giovanni's grandsonSAT
Giulio persuaded Verdi to come out of retirement in 1880SAT
and later played a vital role in Puccini's artisticSAT
career, publishing all his works. Casa Ricordi was alsoSAT
the first to come up with the 'royalty' concept andSAT
successfully lobbied for one of the first laws to protectSAT
composers' (and publishers') copyright. But was the firmSAT
always rigorous in its production standards?SAT
SAT
The music includes many important operas from the 19thSAT
century, including Rossini, Bellini, Verdi and Puccini.SAT
Contributors include Simonetta Puccini, Ricordi familySAT
members, Ricordi managing director Tino Cenamo, formerSAT
Ricordi director of publishing Gabrielle Dotto, musicSAT
historian Philip Gossett and Verdi expert Cormac Newark.SAT

Killing the KingSUN
Professor Justin Champion, who has been fascinated by theSUN
trial of Charles I ever since he was a teenager, piecesSUN
together new research which re-examines the archivesSUN
surrounding this most important of events in EnglishSUN
history - the only time when a British King has beenSUN
publicly beheaded.SUN
SUN
Meeting leading historians along the way, Justin goes backSUN
to crucial archives and documents which show that right upSUN
until the last moment, Charles' death was not a foregoneSUN
conclusion, with the records showing that this was no showSUN
trial. In fact there were many rival schemes for resolvingSUN
the problem of Charles I's tyranny: some wantedSUN
abdication, some wanted regency and only a few extremistsSUN
considered the death of the King as an option. Killing theSUN
King was in fact the least likely outcome of the process.SUN

We Must Love One Another or DieSUN
SUN
'Everywhere change, everywhere revolution. In Germany,SUN
in Russia, in Italy, in Spain the whole of civilisation,SUN
of society was changing' wrote Virginia Woolf,SUN
describing the 1930s.SUN
SUN
This week's Words and Music takes a journey through theSUN
decade which ended with the outbreak of World War Two. TheSUN
programme begins with Louis MacNeice's beautiful lyricSUN
poem 'Snow'. 'World is crazier and more of it thanSUN
we think, incorrigibly plural' he said, in a poem whichSUN
explored the feelings of isolation, menace, scepticism andSUN
uncertainty in the 1930s.SUN
SUN
War is a constant presence during the decade. Earlier, theSUN
Spanish Civil War - which began in July 1936 -SUN
inspired many composers and writers. Many intellectuals ofSUN
the Left rallied to the Republican cause including GeorgeSUN
Orwell who wrote his account of his experience as aSUN
militiaman in 'Homage to Catalonia'.SUN
SUN
Stephen Spender too spent time in Spain where he wasSUN
haunted by what he saw in the field. In 1939 he wrote aSUN
poem about the death of a soldier,'A Stopwatch and anSUN
Ordnance Map', which he presented to the composer SamuelSUN
Barber who wrote a choral setting for the poem. The eventsSUN
of the war cast a dark shadow too on Benjamin Britten'sSUN
Violin Concerto in D Minor which was written for theSUN
Spanish violinist Antonio Brosa.SUN
SUN
The work of the male poets of the 1930s - W.H. Auden,SUN
Louis MacNeice, Stephen Spender, T.S. Eliot - is stillSUN
well known and widely read but, in the programme, you'llSUN
also hear the less well known female poets of the decade,SUN
Sylvia Townsend Warner and E.J. Scovell. Scovell's poemSUN
'Flowers' can be heard alongside Delius' 'ViolinSUN
Sonata No 3' which the composer completed in 1930.SUN
SUN
The American experience of the 1930s is represented by aSUN
reading from John Steinbeck's epic 1939 novel '˜TheSUN
Grapes of Wrath' set in the American Depression andSUN
following the journey of the Joad family as they travelSUN
from the Mid-West to California in a desperate search ofSUN
work.SUN
SUN
The programme ends with W.H. Auden's 'September 1,SUN
1939', written in the first days of the Second WorldSUN
War, a poem which he later disowned and refused to haveSUN
reprinted. When he finally allowed the poem to appear inSUN
the Penguin 'Poets of the Thirties' it was on theSUN
condition that the editor made it clear that AudenSUN
regarded it as 'trash' which he 'was ashamed to haveSUN
written'. Between the writing of the poem and today fewSUN
have agreed with the poet's view.SUN
