Throughout SAT most of the 19th and 20th centuries, the history of SAT Italian opera was directly tied to the fortunes of this SAT single family publishing house, based in Milan. SAT SAT The company was founded in 1808 by Giovanni Ricordi, a SAT violinist who led the orchestra in a small Milanese SAT theatre. From very small beginnings, the business grew SAT rapidly and in 1814 he won the exclusive right to publish SAT all the music performed at La Scala, where he was a SAT prompter. Ten years later he purchased the venue's entire SAT archive, and by 1835 Ricordi boasted a catalogue of 10,000 SAT publications. These included most of the operas of SAT Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti. SAT SAT But the company's special relationship with Verdi and SAT Puccini was especially significant. Giovanni's grandson SAT Giulio persuaded Verdi to come out of retirement in 1880 SAT and later played a vital role in Puccini's artistic SAT career, publishing all his works. Casa Ricordi was also SAT the first to come up with the 'royalty' concept and SAT successfully lobbied for one of the first laws to protect SAT composers' (and publishers') copyright. But was the firm SAT always rigorous in its production standards? SAT SAT The music includes many important operas from the 19th SAT century, including Rossini, Bellini, Verdi and Puccini. SAT Contributors include Simonetta Puccini, Ricordi family SAT members, Ricordi managing director Tino Cenamo, former SAT Ricordi director of publishing Gabrielle Dotto, music SAT historian Philip Gossett and Verdi expert Cormac Newark. SUN SUN Meeting leading historians along the way, Justin goes back SUN to crucial archives and documents which show that right up SUN until the last moment, Charles' death was not a foregone SUN conclusion, with the records showing that this was no show SUN trial. In fact there were many rival schemes for resolving SUN the problem of Charles I's tyranny: some wanted SUN abdication, some wanted regency and only a few extremists SUN considered the death of the King as an option. Killing the SUN King was in fact the least likely outcome of the process. SUN SUN 22:35 Words and Music b009tr8p (Listen) SUN We Must Love One Another or Die SUN SUN 'Everywhere change, everywhere revolution. In Germany, SUN in Russia, in Italy, in Spain the whole of civilisation, SUN of society was changing' wrote Virginia Woolf, SUN describing the 1930s. SUN SUN This week's Words and Music takes a journey through the SUN decade which ended with the outbreak of World War Two. The SUN programme begins with Louis MacNeice's beautiful lyric SUN poem 'Snow'. 'World is crazier and more of it than SUN we think, incorrigibly plural' he said, in a poem which SUN explored the feelings of isolation, menace, scepticism and SUN uncertainty in the 1930s. SUN SUN War is a constant presence during the decade. Earlier, the SUN Spanish Civil War - which began in July 1936 - SUN inspired many composers and writers. Many intellectuals of SUN the Left rallied to the Republican cause including George SUN Orwell who wrote his account of his experience as a SUN militiaman in 'Homage to Catalonia'. SUN SUN Stephen Spender too spent time in Spain where he was SUN haunted by what he saw in the field. In 1939 he wrote a SUN poem about the death of a soldier,'A Stopwatch and an SUN Ordnance Map', which he presented to the composer Samuel SUN Barber who wrote a choral setting for the poem. The events SUN of the war cast a dark shadow too on Benjamin Britten's SUN Violin Concerto in D Minor which was written for the SUN Spanish violinist Antonio Brosa. SUN SUN The work of the male poets of the 1930s - W.H. Auden, SUN Louis MacNeice, Stephen Spender, T.S. Eliot - is still SUN well known and widely read but, in the programme, you'll SUN also hear the less well known female poets of the decade, SUN Sylvia Townsend Warner and E.J. Scovell. Scovell's poem SUN 'Flowers' can be heard alongside Delius' 'Violin SUN Sonata No 3' which the composer completed in 1930. SUN SUN The American experience of the 1930s is represented by a SUN reading from John Steinbeck's epic 1939 novel '˜The SUN Grapes of Wrath' set in the American Depression and SUN following the journey of the Joad family as they travel SUN from the Mid-West to California in a desperate search of SUN work. SUN SUN The programme ends with W.H. Auden's 'September 1, SUN 1939', written in the first days of the Second World SUN War, a poem which he later disowned and refused to have SUN reprinted. When he finally allowed the poem to appear in SUN the Penguin 'Poets of the Thirties' it was on the SUN condition that the editor made it clear that Auden SUN regarded it as 'trash' which he 'was ashamed to have SUN written'. Between the writing of the poem and today few SUN have agreed with the poet's view.
