SAT
Wilhelm Furtwangler's decision to remain conductor ofSAT
the Berlin Philharmonic under Hitler, and his subsequentSAT
de-Nazification by the Americans, is the focus of RonaldSAT
Harwood's 1995 play 'Taking Sides'. It is now backSAT
on the London stage alongside Harwood's recent work onSAT
the same theme, 'Collaboration', which exploresSAT
Richard Strauss's association with the regime in theSAT
1930s and his relationship with the Jewish author andSAT
librettist Stefan Zweig.SAT
SAT
Petroc talks to Oscar-winning Harwood about the issues ofSAT
guilt, naivety, culpability and human weakness in theSAT
plays, with specially recorded extracts featuring MichaelSAT

Nicholas MawSAT
SAT
The Grantham born composer Nicholas Maw died this week inSAT
Washington DC. With major works including hisSAT
'Odyssey' for orchestra and his four hour operaSAT
Sophie's Choice, Maw had a remarkable talent for theSAT
large scale, but despite his break-through work Scenes andSAT
Arias at the Proms in the 1960's, and subsequent momentsSAT
of fame, many believe Maw's music did not always receiveSAT
the acclaim it was due.SAT
SAT
Music Matters pays tribute to Maw's legacy withSAT
contributions from Sir Simon Rattle, who conducted theSAT
first performances of Sophie's Choice in 2002, theSAT
original 'Sophie' Angelika Kirchschlager, music criticSAT
Paul Driver, and fellow composers Julian Anderson andSAT
Oliver Knussen.SAT
SAT
Krzysztof PendereckiSAT
SAT
For Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki politics andSAT
religion have always played a central role - both themesSAT
reflected in works such as his Polish Requiem, written inSAT
1980 for the victims of anti-government riots at theSAT
Gdansk Shipyard, or the St Luke Passion, which he recentlySAT
conducted as part of Polska! Year and the 'Sounds NewSAT
Festival' in Canterbury Cathedral.SAT
SAT
In conversation with Petroc, Penderecki talks about hisSAT
move from the avante garde to romanticism in the 1970s,SAT
his Catholic faith, Polish politics - and the 1700 treesSAT
he has planted at his home near Krakow.SAT

Corporate CommissionsSAT
SAT
Penderecki's First Symphony was commissioned bySAT
Peterborough based firm Perkins Engines in the 1970s.SAT
Whilst the majority of new commissions since the SecondSAT
World War have come directly or indirectly from the ArtsSAT
Council or the BBC, it is little known that companies inSAT
the corporate sector have also played a role in bringingSAT
new works by contemporary composers to the stage.SAT
SAT
Petroc discusses the business benefits of commissioningSAT
music with Ed McKeon from the newly formed Sound and MusicSAT
and Colin Tweedy, Chief Executive of Arts and Business.SAT

Valentina VarrialeSAT
Lucie Skeaping presents highlights of a concert given inSAT
the Italian city of Palestrina, just east of Rome, bySAT
soprano Valentina Varriale with musicians of the CapellaSAT
della Pieta de Turchini. Three of the four featured piecesSAT
are all settings of the same Latin text Salve Regina - aSAT
prayer to the Virgin Mary, performed in church since theSAT
Middle Ages, during the months between Pentecost andSAT
Advent, and traditionally sung after the final prayers orSAT
the Compline.SAT
SAT
Legend has it that the author might have been the FrenchSAT
Bishop of Podium, who wrote the words as a type ofSAT
war-anthem as he set off for the Crusades. The settings inSAT
this concert are by Giovanni Pergolesi and twoSAT
lesser-known Italian contemporaries- Orazio Benevoli andSAT
Leonardo Leo. The programme also includes a sinfonia bySAT

Children of the Whitsun WeddingsSUN
Poets Paul Farley and Kate Royal travel across Britain,SUN
tracing the origins of some of Philip Larkin's best-knownSUN
train-inspired poems, including the celebrated WhitsunSUN
Weddings - of which they are both particular admirers.SUN
SUN
They also look at other poems such as Dockery and Son,SUN
Friday Night at the Royal Station Hotel and Here, and takeSUN
journeys from Oxford to Sheffield and Hull to London. TheySUN
lead them to a series of interchanges on class, gender,SUN
paternity and Englishness, as well as a discussion aboutSUN
the poet's influence on them and on other contemporarySUN
writers.SUN
SUN
Along the way, they meet fellow Larkin enthusiasts,SUN
including the Hull woman married in the 1950s whoSUN
remembers the 'bridal express' days evoked in The WhitsunSUN
Weddings - as they build up a picture of how much ofSUN
Larkin's England has gone, what remains and talk aboutSUN
what the poems saySUN

With new readings of the poems in addition to archiveSUN
recordings.SUN

Do Not Go GentleSUN
SUN
Barbara Jefford and Neville Jason explore the adventure ofSUN
entering our 'third age', and the challenges andSUN
consolations of old age. With readings from Shakespeare,SUN
Yeats, Browning, Dylan Thomas, Roger McGough and DannieSUN
Abse, and music including Verdi, Mahler, Strauss,SUN
Beethoven, Ravel and Jerome Kern.SUN
SUN
When I approached Barbara Jefford and Neville Jason to doSUN
the readings for my programme on the theme of old age ISUN
discovered that the last time they worked together wasSUN
half a century ago when they played the twins SebastianSUN
and Viola in Twelfth Night at the Old Vic and were onlySUN
just starting out on their careers. At the start ofSUN
Shakespeare's play the twins are separated by a terribleSUN
storm and each thinks the other drowned. It takes the twoSUN
and a half hours of Shakespeare's drama to re-unite theSUN
pair and bring about the happy ending. It seemed a happySUN
coincidence that this programme on age should reunite theSUN
pair in real life, fifty years on and both at the top ofSUN
their game.SUN
SUN
In choosing old age as the theme of this programme I didSUN
not want to concentrate on the cruelties of ageing, butSUN
instead to celebrate it as a time when musicians andSUN
writers are at the peak of their talents. The programmeSUN
starts with Mieczyslaw Horszowski playing Mozart at theSUN
Wigmore Hall three weeks before his 99th birthday,SUN
recorded live. During the programme you will hearSUN
Rostropovich playing for the Queen's Jubilee in the PromSUN
at the Palace in 2002 when he was 75, the 78 year oldSUN
Vladimir Horowitz playing Chopin, and the legendary jazzSUN
bassist Milt Hinton, aged 85. There is also music fromSUN
Elliott Carter's Boston Concerto, written when he wasSUN
94, and from John Tavener's Requiem, composed last yearSUN
when he was 64 - a mere stripling compared to Horszowksi.SUN
SUN
I took the title for the programme from Dylan Thomas'SUN
ferocious villanelle Do Not Go Gentle Into That GoodSUN
Night. I have included several comic poems, including oneSUN
of my favourite of Robert Browning's dramaticSUN
monologues, The Bishop Orders His Tomb at St Praxed'sSUN
Church. Barbara Jefford also performs an extract fromSUN
Congreve's The Way of the World in which Lady WishfortSUN
attempts to cover up the cracks in her face sufficientlySUN
well to seduce a gentleman caller. There are alsoSUN
darker-toned poems from authors such as Sylvia Plath, W.B.SUN
Yeats and Thomas Hardy, but I have chosen to end on anSUN
extract from East Coker in which I think T.S. Eliot hasSUN
managed to combine an understanding of the loss andSUN
sadness of old age with the sense that it might also be anSUN
adventure.SUN

As part of his two-year exploration of the entire cycle ofMON
Beethoven piano sonatas, incorporating recitals in EuropeMON

gives a performance at the Vienna Konzerthaus.MON

The programme comprises the set of three sonatas, Op 31,MON
which are strikingly original, and were written in theMON
middle of Beethoven's lifetime, at the crucial time in hisMON
life when he was coming to terms with his deafness. TheseMON
are matched with one of his later works, the sonata in A,MON
Op 101, which has an air of introspection. BeethovenMON
described it as a 'series of impressions and reveries'.MON

Isaiah BerlinMON
Philip Dodd and guests discuss the ideas, life and legacyMON
of Sir Isaiah Berlin, widely considered to be the leadingMON
liberal philosopher of the 20th century. Most famous forMON
his development of ideas about liberty, Berlin was alsoMON
admired for his brilliant essays and speeches.MON
MON
Born in Riga in 1909 he witnessed both the February andMON
October revolutions of 1917, before his family moved toMON
Britain following anti-Semitic encounters. Settling inMON
Oxford, Berlin delivered his influential essay TwoMON
Concepts of Liberty in 1958. He defined negative libertyMON
as the absence of constraints, which he regarded as theMON
safest and most favourable form of liberty. PositiveMON
liberty, however, was for him associated withMON
self-determination, which he saw as potentially leaningMON
towards political totalitarianism. These concepts ofMON
liberty are seen to have influenced generations ofMON
philosophers and politicians.MON

From Russia to Turkey to India, nations that swore offTUE

John EvelynWED
Matthew Sweet and Claire Tomalin discuss the life and workWED
of diarist, gossip and horticulturalist John Evelyn, whoWED
although now eclipsed by the fame of his friend SamuelWED
Pepys, was the other great chronicler of the 17th century.WED
WED
Like Pepys, Evelyn lived through and wrote about one ofWED
the most fascinating periods in British history -WED
witnessing the deaths of Charles I and Oliver Cromwell,WED
the Great Plague of London and the Great Fire of London inWED
1666. His special interest, however, was in horticulture,WED
and in his day was famous for Sylva, a book about trees,WED
and Directions for the Gardiner, an account of his gardenWED
at Sayes Court.WED
WED
Evelyn wrote one of the earliest gardening calendars,WED
listing each month's prime flowers and vegetables, and howWED
best to dress and prepare a salad. He fought briefly forWED
the Royalists during the English Civil War, escaped toWED
Italy where he studied anatomy, and on his return toWED
London helped to found the Royal Society. He also wroteWED
Fumifugium, the first book written on the growing problemWED
of air pollution in the capital.WED
