S.SUNEliot brought about a revaluation and reassessment ofSUNinterest in a group of 17th Century poets who had beenSUNneglected for a considerable time.SUNSUNHe examined one by one the characteristics which areSUNgenerally considered ‘metaphysical’: the elaboration ofSUNsimile to the farthest possible extent, rapid associationSUNof thought, compression and sudden contrasts of images.SUNSUNIn his view their unique contribution was to unite thoughtSUNwith feeling – something he called “Unification ofSUNSensibility” – a faculty which was lost in the age ofSUNMilton and Dryden (who could think but not feel) and theSUNsucceeding age of Tennyson and Browning (who could feelSUNbut not think).SUNSUNEliot also saw close connections between the complexity ofSUNhis own poetry and that of the Metaphysicals.SUNSUNThis programme interlaces the five sections of BurntSUNNorton (the 1st of Eliot’s Four Quartets) with music andSUNthe metaphysical poetry of John Donne and Andrew MarvellSUNetc.SUNSUNAnna Massey reads the Eliot and Derek Jacobi reads theSUNMetaphysicals. They meet in the middle where both takeSUNpart in Andrew Marvell’s A Dialogue between the Soul andSUNthe Body.SUNSUNIn 1931 TS Eliot wrote to Stephen Spender: I haveSUNBeethoven’s A minor Quartet on the gramophone, and I findSUNit quite inexhaustible to study. There is a sort ofSUNheavenly, or at least more than human gaiety, about someSUNof his later things which one imagines might come toSUNoneself as the fruit of reconciliation and relief afterSUNimmense suffering; I should like to get something of thatSUNinto verse before I die.SUNSUNEliot’s Four Quartets are to some extent inspired by thisSUNquartet – the only Beethoven Quartet in 5 sections, as areSUNall four of the Eliot Quartets. Eliot said he wanted toSUNget beyond poetry, as Beethoven in his later works,SUNstrove to get beyond music.SUNSUNThe language and thought in the Four Quartets is soSUNelliptical and compressed that it would be inappropriateSUNand presumptuous to match the poetry and the music tooSUNliterally. The aim has been to allow the poetry to breathSUNby placing moments of musical reflection between the 5SUNsections of the poem. In some cases the music matches theSUNmood in others it provides a contrast. Below I haveSUNsuggested some tangential (possibly subconscious)SUNconnections between the words and the music. However theseSUNare entirely personal and hopefully the programme standsSUNon its own without a knowledge of these connections.SUNSUNBurnt NortonSUNSUNSection 1:SUN“Time present and time past / Are both perhaps present inSUNtime future”SUNThe opening section introduces the theme of time. The poemSUNconsiders the relationship between life in time, a life ofSUNbondage and suffering, and life in eternity, freedom, andSUNhappiness. This leads into the “Et vitam venturi” fromSUNBeethoven’s Missa Solemnis. In this part of the Mass,SUNChristians look forward to the life to come when they willSUNlive outside of Time. Beethoven constructs his fugueSUNsubject out of a chain of descending thirds which returnSUNto the original note – a concise emblem for eternalSUNrecurrence in eternity.SUNSUNSection 2: “Garlic and sapphires in the mud”SUNEliot develops the theme of time and memory – “To beSUNconscious is not to be in time”. One of the central imagesSUNof the poem is the memory of a rose-garden with a pool.SUNTakemitsu’s Quotation of Dream plays with memories ofSUNDebussy’s La Mer and transforms the material into aSUNJapanese flower-garden with a lakeSUNSUNSection 3 “Here is a place of disaffection”SUNEliot contrasts the redeemed time of eternity with theSUNbondage of temporal time where “time-ridden faces” areSUN“distracted from distraction by distraction.” In laterSUNyears he admitted that the section beginning “DescendSUNlower, descend only / Into the world of perpetualSUNsolitude” was inspired by the London Underground, “a placeSUNof disaffection” where “the world moves / In appetency, onSUNits metalled ways / Of time past and time future.” JohnSUNAdams’ Short Ride in a Fast Machine suggests theSUNmechanistic world of fast travel and machines – though heSUNpossibly found it more exhilarating that Eliot.SUNSUNSection 4 “Time and the bell have buried the day”SUNMuch of the inspiration behind the Four Quartets came fromSUNEastern philosophy with its emphasis in eternal recurrenceSUNand withdrawal from the temporal world of will andSUNillusion. In this section the poet withdraws into theSUNworld of night where “the light is still / At the stillSUNpoint of the turning world.” The 4th movement of Mahler’sSUN3rd Symphony is a setting of a passage from Nietzsche’sSUNAlso sprach Zarathustra in which the Eastern prophetSUNZarathustra meditates on Night and EternitySUNSUNSection 5 “Words move, music moves / Only in time”SUNEliot explores the connection between music and time. TheSUNidea that music exists both inside and outside of time. InSUNother words we experience music through time but it alsoSUNexists as an abstract concept outside of time – “the endSUNprecedes the beginning, / And the end and the beginningSUNwere always there / before the beginning and after theSUNend.” We end with the poem’s inspiration, the last sectionSUNof the central movement from Beethoven’s late A minorSUNquartet in which for pages time itself seems masterfullySUNsuspended.SUNSUNDJ = Derek Jacobi AM = Anna MasseySUNSUN00:00:00SUNByrd In nomine a 5 No 5 Ensemble Orlando GibbonsSUNVirgin 5452642 T12SUN00:00:18SUNDJ John DonneSUNOh my blacke Soule! now thou art summonedSUN00:03:02SUNAMSUNT.S. Hello,
Is it possible to listen the THURSDAY 3 DECEMBER 2009 concert, and specially "Madrigal aux Muses", of Albert Roussel ? The link doesn't work and I need it a lot...
Thank you
Christel.
Th BBC usually only keep the audio link for seven days following the broadcast. All I can suggest is that you look out for a repeat.
