SUN SUN 22:00 Sunday Feature b00tp8mt (Listen) SUN Myths and Mystery Cycles SUN SUN The Records of Early English Drama is now one of the biggest SUN research projects ever to have taken place in the study of SUN English literature. It's brief is to 'establish the broad SUN context from which the great drama of Shakespeare and his SUN contemporaries grew'. But rather than look again at the SUN extant texts and folios of the mystery plays and pageants of SUN the early medieval period, a small army of REED (Records of SUN Early English Drama) scholars, marshalled from their HQ at SUN the University of Toronto, are combing through church and SUN court records for any reference to plays, music, pageant and SUN performance that they can find. SUN SUN Very often the records are no more than court reports of SUN wrong doings; illegal performances, drunken revelry, and SUN bawdy performances. Occasionally there are snap shots of the SUN plays that were put on by way of costume and performer SUN costs, touring plans, venue preparation and even SUN descriptions of events that took place. SUN SUN County by county, Riding by Riding the scholars are SUN producing a brilliantly colourful picture of drama and SUN entertainment from the early Medieval period up until the SUN closing of the theatres in 1642. SUN SUN At the moment the map of Great Britain is completely SUN covered. Some of the counties have completed volumes, others SUN are on-going. All this started back in the seventies when a SUN young scholar, Professor Alexandra Johnston, discovered a SUN document recording in minute detail the contents of a York SUN player's wagon. Her vision and drive along with the SUN painstaking and diligent scholarship that has followed is SUN turning vague notions of what went on in Britain in the SUN centuries before Shakespeare into a clear idea of the SUN professionalism of playing troupes and musicians and the SUN sheer exuberant activity of local performers. SUN SUN John Sessions follows REED scholars into the archives, talks SUN to them about the scale and discipline of their work - it SUN can take over ten years to cover one county - and he asks SUN scholars and performers like Peter Holland and Mark Rylance SUN what all this new evidence does to their understanding and SUN performance of early English theatre. SUN SUN There are a number of myths being debunked. The notion of SUN touring players wheeling into an Innyard and setting up SUN their performance appears to be entirely fiction. Players SUN would go where they were invited. Their touring journeys SUN were highly organised. MON MON 12:00 Composer of the Week b00tp8ty (Listen) MON Ole Bull (1810-1880), Episode 1 MON MON Ask most music buffs who Norway's greatest classical MON composer is, and you're likely to get a 100% vote for Edvard MON Grieg. Put the same question to almost anyone in Norway MON itself, and you'll get the answer Ole Bull: violinist MON extraordinaire, prolific composer, and spearhead of the MON cultural revolution which enabled the likes of Grieg to MON carry the nation's music to the world. MON MON As Norway celebrates Bull's bi-centenary, Donald Macleod MON explores the life of what proves to be one of music MON history's most exotic characters. Bull led a Byronic life, MON rushing around the planet giving concert performances to an MON adoring public who quickly conferred on him superstar MON status. He took the violin to new heights, rivalling even MON his contemporary Paganini, and famously using an instrument MON which allowed him to play on all four strings at once. His MON life was full of adventure too, as he escaped fires on river MON boats, street fights, bankruptcy in casinos, and a reputed MON near death in the River Seine. He even attempted to start a MON Norwegian colony in the US, modestly called 'Oleana'. In MON doing all this he created an image for himself where legend MON is almost indivisible from fact. MON MON Fortunately, Donald Macleod has on-hand the undisputed MON expert on Bull's life, the composer's biographer Harald MON Herresthal. They meet in an unexpected location, the idyllic MON estate of Carreglwyd at the western end of the isle of MON Anglesey. It was here that Bull found some rare tranquility MON while on a UK tour, and where he also composed one of his MON most enchanting works, which we hear in a live performance MON given by Calum Smart, finalist in this year's BBC Young MON Musician competition. MON MON The week's journey also includes intersections with the MON lives of many of Bull's contemporaries, composers whose work MON has been largely forgotten. We hear delicate piano studies MON from another virtuoso of the day, Agathe Backer-Grøndahl, a MON Chopin-esque trio from Thomas Tellefsen, and a picturesque MON opera scene from one of the first people to recognise Bull's MON prodigious talents, Waldemar Thrane. And we also hear from MON Grieg himself, who as a boy was visited by Ole Bull and MON launched into the world of music. MON MON The week begins with Ole Bull's early career, when one MON alcoholic musician's over-indulgence gives a first chance MON for the 8-year-old prodigy to show what he's made of. MON There's also chance to hear one of the pair of showpiece MON concertos which Bull composed for his own instrument. MON MON Ole Borneman Bull MON arr. MON MON John Adams revisits the subject most famously rendered in MON music by Handel in Messiah, giving the story a 21st century MON treatment with a female perspective, and adding texts from MON medieval mystery plays and Spanish poetry. MON Adams writes: "as beautiful as the telling is in the New MON Testament, it is nevertheless an imagined secondhand MON experience, written by men." Adams chooses to set poetry by MON Spanish women alongside the gospel account: "the intensity MON of their imagery and feeling imparts a special authenticity MON to the work". Mary's experience of pregnancy in El Niño MON represents the pregnancy of women throughout the ages, much MON as the birth of Jesus epitomises the birth of all children. MON El Niño was written to celebrate the new millennium in 2000, MON and it is a radiantly joyful large-scale work in two parts, MON with a vocal cast of three soloists, a countertenor trio, MON adult and children's choruses and orchestra, plus an MON electronic "sound-environment". This first programme begins with a MON major examination of the leader whose national legacy has MON now come to outreach the other poitical titans of the MON twentieth century: Chairman Mao. MON MON The country he created, the People's Republic of China, has MON abandoned his economic principles and as a consequence MON soared to global wealth and power, but Mao remains a MON powerful icon in his home country. So how much does China MON really allow to be known about Chairman Mao's life and MON leadership, when so many taboos and so much censorship remains? MON MON Rana Mitter talks to Frank Dikotter, a Hong Kong based MON scholar who has written a new, some say, essential biography MON of Mao's catastrophic famine of 1958-62, which has been MON written with access to newly opened Communist Party archives MON and desmonstrates the mass killings, destruction of property MON and the environment that Mao's Great Leap Forward caused. MON MON So should Mao be vilified as a dictatorial monster whose MON policies caused the starvation and death of millions - or MON is, as some claim, the real story more complex, and MON essential for understanding the modern Chinese Communist MON mentality? Rana Mitter and Frank Dikotter discuss the latest MON assessment of Mao from historians both inside and outside MON China. MON MON Producer: Natalie Steed. MON MON 22:00 Composer of the Week b00tp8ty (Listen) MON [Repeat of broadcast at 12:00 today] MON MON 23:00 The Essay b00tp92z (Listen) MON British Cinema of the 40s, Went the Day Well? MON MON British cinema of the 1940s freshly interpreted by Simon MON Heffer who explores old favourites in terms of their social MON and political message. MON MON The British film industry went into the second world war MON still relatively naive. It was behind Hollywood in terms of MON technical accomplishment and behind France in its MON sophistication - 1939 was, after all, the year of Gone With MON The Wind and La Regle du Jeu, both unrivalled in Britain at MON the time. MON MON The early propaganda films were predictably facile and MON jingoistic; but as the threat of invasion passed and MON attention turned to winning the war rather than simply MON defending the country against the Nazi onslaught, British MON cinema became more subtle. By late in the war, cinema became MON more concerned with presenting the basis for a new post-war MON settlement for the British people. MON MON In five personal interpretations, Simon Heffer traces the MON ways in which British cinema moved from galvanising the MON public to challenging the established class system and MON arguing for social cohesion, with its consequent loss of MON individuality and furtherance of collectivism. In the MON post-war period he looks at how film reflected a reaction MON among the public against state control and austerity and a MON new challenge to supposedly common values. MON MON 1. Went the Day Well? MON In the first programme, Simon Heffer celebrates the 1942 MON Ealing film, based on a short story by Graham Greene, MON depicting how a village invaded by Germans unites against MON them and defeats them. Despite the bloodshed, what emerges MON is an almost Utopian vision of rural peace that suggests MON itself as a possible microcosm for a less class-bound future MON society. Kind Hearts and Coronets THU THU Generally written up as the most sublime of the Ealing THU comedies and a brilliant vehicle for the astonishing THU versatility of Alec Guiness - both of which it is - Simon THU Heffer also considers Kind Hearts and Coronets to be one of THU the most subversive films ever made in the British cinema, THU with an innovative, destructive temper that make later THU anti-Establishment films such as If and A Clockwork Orange THU seem derivative by comparison. THU THU This 1949 film about a man who murders member after member THU of his extended family in order to inherit a dukedom is dark THU not only because its subject is mass murder, but also THU because of its subtle attack on almost every aspect of THU British social order - the legal system, the class system, THU the Church, the City. More unusually, Simon Heffer also THU considers it as a perfect assault - often disguised by its THU comedy - on the shallow and narrow lower middle-class values THU and proprieties that predominated in Britain in the THU immediate post-war period. THU THU 23:15 Late Junction b00tp9hh (Listen) THU Fiona Talkington's musical selection includes percussion THU music by Simon Limbrick and Steve Reich, turntablist Philip THU Jeck, and a Late Junction session which brings Finnish THU violinist Pekka Kuusisto and Icelandic composer/producer THU Valgeir Sigurdsson together in the studio for the first time THU to record original material. FRI FRI And to end the concert, a work about which its composer FRI Shostakovich wrote: 'My Sixth Symphony conveys the mood of FRI spring, joy and life.' The author Alexander Kuprin paints a vivid a FRI picture of Chekhov's life in Yalta - the regular visits from FRI aspiring writers, his sensitivity to critics, and Chekhov's FRI uneasy relationship with his two dogs - Tusik and Kashtan. FRI FRI Alexander Kuprin was a hugely popular writer in FRI pre-Revolutionary Russia. The Blue Lamp FRI FRI Very far in its mood from apparently subversive and FRI anti-establishment late 1940s Ealing comedies such as Whisky FRI Galore and Passport to Pimlico, The Blue Lamp depicts a FRI fractured post-war world which its original audience FRI recoiled from when the film was first released. At the heart FRI of the story is the shooting dead in cold blood of a kindly FRI policeman on the beat. FRI FRI Simon Heffer examines how deeply this film differs from the FRI depiction of a cohesive society of settled and agreed values FRI that had been the staple of wartime cinema with its shared FRI sense of an external enemy to be defeated. He goes on to FRI consider the real life changes in society which had led FRI Ealing to depict this story in film: individuals no longer FRI willing to accept orders as they had done in the war, their FRI aspirations no longer containable within the bureacratic FRI lines ordained by the state. And, in conclusion, he FRI considers how, having helped Britain win the war, the film FRI industry was now beginning to reflect a fractured new FRI society which just might be about to lose the peace. FRI FRI 23:15 World on 3 b00tqhnh (Listen) FRI Lopa Kothari with sounds from across the globe, plus a FRI session with American bluesman Spider John Koerner. FRI
