Based on the epic SUN poem by Ariosto, the libretto by Grazio Braccioli provided SUN Vivaldi with some very intense dramatic opportunities, SUN including star-crossed lovers, dark magic and ultimate madness. SUN Nowadays, Vivaldi is not remembered for his contributions to SUN the stage, but he once claimed to have written 94 operas! SUN Evidence has only been found of 20 of those, and much of the SUN music was recycled endlessly from one production to another, SUN but Orlando Furioso was arguably his most popular opera, and SUN has been revived a number of times in recent years. The most SUN celebrated recording, arguably, is the one made in 1978 by I SUN Solisti Veneti with Marilyn Horne in the title role and SUN Victoria de los Angeles as the sorceress Alcina. Today's SUN programme focuses mainly on a more recent recording by SUN Jean-Christophe Spinosi's Ensemble Matheus, which featured SUN Philippe Jaroussky as Ruggiero. Jaroussky is preparing to SUN play that role on stage in Paris in 2011, and speaks very SUN enthusiastically about the opera, and about Vivaldi's SUN much-neglected music for the stage. SUN Traditionally it's said that Roman rule ended in the year SUN 410: 1600 years ago, when the Roman emperor Honorius SUN supposedly told us to fend for ourselves, but it's much more SUN complicated than that. Britain became embroiled in a series SUN of revolts by imperial usurpers which weren't so much SUN 'Romans Go Home' but 'Emperor come here!' and it all went SUN very badly wrong. SUN SUN It's hard to imagine London closing for business, becoming a SUN ghost town whose citizens have fled, with a choice of SUN growing their own veg in the countryside or becoming bully SUN boys for a local war leader, but that's exactly what SUN happened when Roman rule collapsed in Britain. Londoners SUN left strange thank-you gifts for the gods as they closed the SUN city down - like the Draper's Lane hoard of copper pots and SUN sacrifices, which we'll be investigating. SUN SUN The usurper emperors accidentally brought a systems collapse SUN to tipping point. In the maelstrom that followed, pagan SUN Anglo Saxons who'd originally been Roman mercenaries were SUN joined by new immigrants from their Germanic homelands and a SUN lot of eastern Romano-Brits decided that they were the SUN future, while others desperately clung to their Roman SUN Christian ways. But in Wales, Cornwall and Devon, they SUN looked aghast at this barbarism. An early form of SUN devolution, and a boost in local power (legend says from the SUN rebel emperor Magnus Maximus), led the West to hold on SUN proudly to their Roman identity, fending off Saxons and SUN assimilated Saxon 'wannabes' all the way till the medieval SUN campaigns of Edward I. Edward might have thought of himself SUN as the true heir of Rome but to the Welsh he was nothign SUN more than the last barbarian. SUN SUN 22:15 Words and Music b00vl3yx (Listen) SUN Witches and Sorcerers SUN SUN Halloween: the night of the year traditionally believed to SUN be the time when the veil between this world and the realm SUN of the supernatural is drawn back. On All Hallow’s Eve Words SUN and Music takes a trip to the dark side with an exploration SUN of music and literature’s favourite practitioners of the SUN black arts: witches and sorcerers. SUN SUN The Malleus Maleficarum of 1486 is the literary work SUN responsible for conjuring up much of the imagery we SUN associate with witches. Its two German authors Heinrich SUN Kramer and James Sprenger sought to define witchcraft and SUN tackled one of the most persistent fascinations with SUN witches: how they get around. They explained it thus: ‘They SUN take the unguent which….they make at the devil's instruction SUN from the limbs of children….and anoint with it a chair or a SUN broomstick; whereupon they are immediately carried up into SUN the air’. SUN SUN It is up in the air and riding menacingly on a broomstick SUN that we join our first witch, Robert Herrick’s Hag. The SUN insistent rise and fall of the metre carries us onwards with SUN our ominous rider ‘O'er ditches and mires’. We can only SUN speculate that she would have been on her way to the very SUN event which Mussorgsky’s tone poem Night on the Bare SUN Mountain so richly evokes: a Witches Sabbath. The thunder SUN claps of percussion open the programme in the stormy climate SUN best suited to spell-casting, cauldron-stirring and the SUN necromantic arts. SUN SUN Shakespeare’s Macbeth is full of foreboding weather, his SUN three hags gather on the ‘blasted’ heath, and ‘Hover through SUN the fog and filthy air’. The Bard’s trio of witches may have SUN some parallels with the group of Scots accused during the SUN Berwick Witch Trials. They were tried for using spells to SUN conjure up storms which prevented King James VI of Scotland SUN (later James I of England) from returning home after a trip SUN to Denmark. SUN SUN Shakepeare’s eerie supernatural domain in The Tempest is SUN quite different from that of the heath. Thomas Ades’ SUN haunting, ethereal Ariel ushers in the flawed sorcerer SUN Prospero as he prepares to abandon his ‘book’. The figure of SUN a hubristic magician is one also taken up by Christopher SUN Marlowe, with his charismatic Faustus revelling in the SUN marvels he will propagate now that he has been ‘ravish’d’ by SUN the seductive power of magic. Goethe takes a lighter look at SUN the pitfalls of wizardry, as he traces the disastrous SUN attempts of a novice sorcerer’s apprentice to practice his SUN master’s (dark) arts. The resulting chaos is captured to SUN stupendous musical affect in Paul Dukas’ symphonic poem SUN inspired by Goethe’s work. SUN SUN Dukas’ orchestration in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice SUN brilliantly captures the elements tumbling wildly out of SUN control, with water from a mop bucket turning into a SUN tempest. The watery domain is often imagined as the site of SUN witchcraft. Dante Gabriel Rosetti in The Sea Spell portrays SUN an entranced sailor lured to a watery grave by lute playing SUN sirens. The tempting wails of these water witches are eerily SUN evoked by that master of the orchestral image, Debussy, in SUN his Sirènes. Tennyson’s muscular verse depicts the SUN subterranean domain of The Kraken, the wizard of the SUN crashing waves; waves so powerfully painted in musical form SUN by Benjamin Britten’s Sea Interlude from Peter Grimes. SUN SUN But when I think of witches, it isn’t Macbeth’s weird SUN sisters which first come to mind, but a tall, green faced SUN American lady with a pointy black hat, a cackle and a strong SUN aversion to water. And when I think of wizards, it is of a SUN confused charlatan heading off in a hot air balloon with SUN Judy Garland. No exploration of witches and wizards would be SUN complete without some brief return to the land of Oz, where SUN we join Dorothy and her nemesis the Wicked Witch of the West SUN (played so memorably by Margaret Hamilton), as they make SUN their way along the Yellow Brick Road in search of the SUN Wonderful Wizard of Oz. When historians seek to bind world history under TUE grand ideas like 'civilisation' - do they explore our TUE universal humanity - or deliver a biased account? TUE TUE Historian Ian Morris has written "Why the West Rules - For TUE Now" which has been described as the closest thing to a TUE 'unified field theory of history'. He's joined in studio by TUE Richard Miles, author of Ancient Worlds, which looks at the TUE origins and evolution of western civilisation. Philip Dodd TUE asks them whether an account of history that approaches the TUE objectivity of science is a delusion when confronted by the TUE myriad diversity of human affairs. Is our idea of history so TUE fragmented that we find it difficult to accept the idea of TUE one big story that includes us all. FRI FRI Free Thinking, Radio 3's annual festival of ideas, is taking FRI "the pursuit of happiness" as its central theme this year. FRI Happiness is rapidly becoming a high-profile pre-occupation FRI of governments as they explore ways of assessing the FRI state-of-the-nation beyond economic output - both David FRI Cameron and Ed Miliband have expressed their intention to FRI measure Britain's "wellbeing". FRI FRI The opening lecture of the festival, delivered in front of FRI an audience at the Free Thinking's main venue the Sage FRI Gateshead, is given by Jacqueline Wilson, one of Britain's FRI most successful children's writers who has sold over 30 FRI million books in the UK and is a former Children's Laureate. FRI FRI Famous for challenging the traditional subjects of FRI children's fiction, Jacqueline's Free Thinking Lecture FRI explores her own background and the way enormous literary FRI success has changed her view of happiness. She draws on FRI years of correspondence with her young readers and their FRI families to understand the changing nature of happiness, and FRI how we can find it today. And from her perspective creating FRI fiction but corresponding with reality, she sounds a FRI warning: perhaps the idea of a "happy ending" has given us FRI misguided ideas about how achievable happiness really is. FRI FRI In the weekend following Jacqueline's lecture, Free Thinking FRI includes events with Kevin McCloud, former Metropolitan FRI Chief Commissioner Lord Blair, actor Fiona Shaw, philosopher FRI Mary Midgley and screenwriter Frank Cottrell Boyce - all FRI will be broadcast on Radio 3's Night Waves in the subsequent FRI weeks. Go to bbc.co.uk/radio3/freethinking for more details. FRI FRI Producer: James Cook. FRI FRI The novelist, short story writer and film-maker Xiaolu Guo FRI was born in a fishing village in south China. Now resident FRI in London, she makes unexpected connections between the FRI lives of the Chinese peasants of her childhood and the lives FRI of the Russian peasants as depicted by Chekhov in his short FRI stories. In a new short story in which she imagines herself FRI travelling as Chekhov himself to the prison island of FRI Sakhalin, she pays tribute to all she has learned from FRI Chekhov in his deeply humane depiction of peasant life in a FRI bitter winter landscape.
