SAT SAT 11:00 Mozart by Mackerras b00x89tr (Listen) SAT The Australian conductor Sir Charles Mackerras, who died SAT last July, was one of the most ardent advocates of Mozart's SAT music in modern times. He left behind a wealth of SAT recordings. As part of our The Genius of Mozart season, SAT Petroc Trelawny plays a selection of Mackerras's Mozart and SAT asks what made him such a great Mozartean. SAT SAT 12:00 Donald Macleod's Mozart b00x1rc6 (Listen) SAT Opera SAT SAT Donald Macleod maps out Mozart's life-story, and tries to SAT fathom why for him Mozart's music will always remain a SAT constant companion. SAT SAT 13:00 Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert b00x1rc8 (Listen) SAT The Genius of Mozart, BBC NOW, Jennifer Pike SAT SAT Catrin Finch presents a live concert from BBC Hoddinott Hall SAT in Cardiff as part of Radio 3's celebration of The Genius of SAT Mozart. SAT SAT Violinist Jennifer, a recent graduate of Radio 3's New SAT Generation Artist scheme, joins the BBC National Orchestra SAT of Wales for Mozart's fifth and final violin concerto. SAT Mozart's prowess as a violinist is often overshadowed by his SAT pianistic virtuosity, but it's quite possible he wrote this SAT concerto to play himself. One early soloist commented that SAT the middle movement was 'too clever by half', but it's the SAT finale that's catches most attention today, as it suddenly SAT lurches into the 'Turkish' (or more accurately SAT Hungarian-inspired) style - and the nickname has stuck. SAT SAT Conductor Garry Walker is no stranger to Mozart, last season SAT he visited the St David's Festival in West Wales with the SAT orchestra, taking the 'Haffner' symphony. Today he conducts SAT the players in Symphony No. 25, written when Mozart was a SAT teenager. It's his first symphony in a minor key, and maybe SAT the passion and turbulence we hear in the outer movements a SAT young man struggling out of his adolescence. SAT SAT MOZART SAT Violin Concerto No. 5 in A "Turkish", K219 SAT Symphony No. 25 in G minor, K183 SAT SAT Jennifer Pike violin SAT BBC National Orchestra of Wales SAT Garry Walker conductor. SAT SAT 14:00 Opera on 3 b00x1rfr (Listen) SAT Cosi fan Tutte SAT SAT Sir Colin Davis conducts an exceptional recording of one of SAT Mozart's wittiest operas, with a superlative cast, including SAT Kiri Te Kanawa and Agnes Baltsa. Davis's finely polished SAT account of the score deftly balances the humanity, irony, SAT pain and humour of Da Ponte's complex battle of the sexes. SAT SAT When two army officers claim to be certain that their SAT fiancés will be eternally faithful, Don Alfonso cannot SAT resist the urge to prove them wrong. It will take him only a SAT day, he claims, to prove that these - like all women - are SAT fickle. His wager is accepted, and from then on, things get SAT complicated. SAT SAT Ferrando ..... Two of these SAT texts, 'Il sogno di Scipione' and 'Lucio Silla' (written by SAT Giovanni de Gamerra and adapted by Metastasio), were written SAT in 1771 when Mozart was still only 16, in between trips to SAT Italy. Metastasio wrote his text 'Il re Pastore' in 1751, SAT and it had been set 14 times before Mozart chose it. The SAT fourth of Mozart's settings turned out to be one of his SAT final works, 'La Clemenza di Tito', written in the summer of SAT 1791; twelve weeks after the first performance Mozart was SAT dead. Catherine Bott reflects on the settings of these texts SAT and plays music from each of the four works. This week the focus is on the music of ocean THU communities. THU THU Galicia: Galicians consider themselves Celts, linked by sea THU travel with peoples in Northern France, Ireland and THU Scotland. Lucy Duran meets leading piper Xosé Manuel Budiño, THU and is invited to the village of Cebreiro for a party THU celebrating Celtic culture. THU THU Papua New Guinea: Andy Kershaw goes shark fishing with THU Blais, the singing shark caller from Tembin Village, to the THU accompaniment of the villagers, who encourage them with a THU unique repertory of shark-calling songs. THU THU Brazil: Lucy Duran visits the coastal city of Salvador da THU Bahia, the ancient capital of Camdomblé. This is the THU religion that uses old African customs and languages - it's THU practised on the seashore looking across to Africa, and the THU sea and its shells are crucial to the liturgy, and its music THU too. THU THU Solomon Islands: Andy Kershaw gets the gospel: the Deep Sea THU Canoe Movement is dedicated to keeping up continuous worship THU 24 hours a day on the paradise island of Malaita. THU THU Producers: Roger Short and James Parkin. THU THU The series accompanies and visits the same destinations as THU BBC One's Human Planet, a new landmark anthropological THU series celebrating man's remarkable ingenuity in using and THU adapting to his environment. THU THU Music Planet will offer the chance to gain a deeper THU understanding of the cultures witnessed on BBC One's Human THU Planet by experiencing their music, sounds and songs. THU THU From the jungles of Papua New Guinea to the deserts of Mali; THU from the heart of the Amazon to the islands of the Pacific; THU from the dark winter days of Greenland to the long summer THU nights of Arctic Norway; from the dried-up rivers of Kenya THU to the grasslands of Mongolia, Music Planet gives the THU listeners unique access to sounds from around the world, THU captured in high-quality sound by the BBC's top music THU recording engineers. And throughout, Andy Kershaw and Lucy THU Duran bring their own special insights to what we're THU hearing. THU THU Key moments for the series include a traditional THU head-hunting song from New Ireland in Papua New Guinea; the THU mighty voice of Greenland's greatest singer; the story of THU the Mangue-bit movement in Recife, Brazil; yodelling in the THU Swiss Alps; rapping in Dubai; an Inuit throat-singing duet, THU recorded by the frozen Arctic Sea; and the secret songs of THU Burma recorded in the jungle on the border with Thailand. THU THU 21:02 THU THU Galicians are linked by sea travel with Northern France, THU Ireland and Scotland. Lucy Duran meets piper Xosé Manuel THU Budiño, and is invited to Cebreiro for a party celebrating THU Celtic culture. THU 21:17 THU THU Andy Kershaw goes fishing with Blais, the singing shark THU caller from Tembin Village, who attempts to lure sharks with THU a unique repertory of songs. THU 21:31 THU THU Lucy Duran visits the coastal city of Salvador da Bahia. THU Here she learns about the Camdomblé religion practiced on THU the seashore where the sea and music are crucial to the THU liturgy. THU 21:46 THU THU Andy Kershaw encounters a Deep Sea Canoe Movement, a THU community who are dedicated to continuous, 24 hours a day, THU worship on the paradise island of Malaita in the Solomon THU Islands. THU THU 22:00 Composer of the Week b00td8j5 (Listen) THU [Repeat of broadcast at 12:00 today] THU THU 23:00 The Essay b00r8cn9 (Listen) THU Land and Sea and Sky, Michael Bird THU THU Michael Bird writes books about the visual arts, so St Ives THU is a good place to be. In his essay he explores how the THU constant transformations of what he sees, the land in the THU light, the weather, the breaking waves, even the people, THU have a rejuvenating, inspirational impact on him. Bird's THU essay was recorded in the streets leading down to the water, THU on Porthmeor Beach, on the cliff path leading to Land's End, THU along the run he takes to focus his thoughts. Unusually, but THU importantly, for a writer, he lives where the visual rather THU than the verbal, takes precedence. In St Ives one sees, then THU writes, rather than the other way around. And Michael Bird THU puzzles on his personal jouney, on how he came to be living THU in the far southwest, where land and sea and sky meet so THU dramatically. FRI FRI 19:55 Twenty Minutes b00x21pk (Listen) FRI A Marginal History FRI FRI Justin Champion rummages through public and academic FRI libraries to see how the defacing of books over centuries of FRI reading sheds light on the history of reading and FRI information. FRI FRI We've all been brought up to believe that writing in books FRI is literary sacrilege: small children are still told off for FRI colouring in their own books. How many hearts have sunk when FRI opening a library book to find biro underlining, marginal FRI commentary, or plain simple abuse? FRI FRI The rules and regulations of public libraries sternly FRI outline the penalties and punishment for such crimes. The FRI modern obsession with the unmarked book has been famously FRI broken by a few notorious readers: Joe Orton and his FRI partner, Kenneth Halliwell, served a four month sentence for FRI defacing library books. In 1959 they began a two year FRI campaign of stealing and defacing books from the Islington FRI public library, then smuggling them back into the stacks, FRI where they shocked and appalled patrons and staff alike. FRI FRI Surprisingly though this passion for the clean page is a FRI recent cultural attitude: it is a consequence of the FRI increasing commodification of the trade in second hand and FRI rare books - books without marks simply command a greater FRI price. Book dealers used to crop marginalia from their FRI titles to increase their value. FRI FRI In the past it was different: annotating, marking, and FRI including marginal comments was approved and encouraged. FRI There were handbooks explaining the best way of doing it. FRI Historians of the book have only very recently recognised FRI that these marks in books are the surviving traces of how FRI real readers encountered books. FRI FRI In A Marginal History, Justin Champion and Bill Sherman look FRI in the margins of some of the intriguing books and FRI manuscripts in the British Library's collection to shed FRI light on this practice of marking books. FRI Exploring such themes Wood draws on the ancient storytelling FRI of traditional song, engages with our very nature in 'Turtle FRI Song' - a new song written for the recent Darwin anniversary FRI - and place (there's even a song about his allotment). He FRI has always lived in Faversham and recorded on location here FRI in Kent's creek, mudflat region, his essay explores how the FRI sea snaking far inland the vast sky and the Dickensian FRI marshes have all shaped his sensibility and concerns.
