The four SUN large part books contain over 1200 pages, each of which SUN features one or more illuminated vignettes of extraordinary SUN quality. The books feature over 200 different compositions, SUN mainly songs, and give a fascinating overview of the kind of SUN music that flourished in first half of the 16th century SUN around Bruges, including French chanson, church masses and SUN Latin motets. The songbook also includes some Italian SUN madrigals and several Dutch polyphonic songs and SUN instrumental works. The composers range from international SUN figures such as Josquin, Mouton, Willaert, and Sermisy to SUN lesser known regional figures such as De Hondt and Hellinck. His books include the 1,000-page SUN Infinite Jest, a novel of grand ambition and stylistic SUN experiment that came complete with 388 endnotes. (Footnotes, SUN digressions, constant second guessing of every thought are SUN features of Wallace's signature style). SUN SUN In April The Pale King, Wallace's final, unfinished novel SUN will be published. Few literary novels have been more SUN eagerly anticipated in recent years. Its great subject is SUN Boredom. Wallace set himself big challenges. Infinite Jest SUN attacked the entertainment industry while trying to SUN entertain and The Pale King engages with boredom as a path SUN toward transcendence. SUN SUN This Sunday Feature is presented by Professor Geoff Ward, SUN author of a literary history of America. He, like many, was SUN convinced Wallace would be the preeminent American writer to SUN reckon with in the years ahead, and was shocked by his SUN tragic early death. He assesses Wallace's legacy, themes and SUN preoccupations, talking to the precursor Wallace admired SUN most, Don DeLillo, and to friends, collaborators and SUN contemporaries such as Mark Costello and Rick Moody. In the SUN company of the writer's sister, Amy Wallace, Ward travels to SUN the Midwest of America where the writer grew up, and SUN considers the impact of place on his imagination. He also SUN talks to Wallace's publisher and editor Michael Pietsch SUN about the difficult task of assembling Wallace's final SUN fragments into The Pale King. SUN SUN The programme also contains some rare archive reflections by SUN a young David Foster Wallace, recorded a year before the SUN publication of Infinite Jest, on the role of the writer in SUN an age of media saturation. SUN SUN 22:15 Words and Music b00y6ggn (Listen) SUN Nocturne SUN SUN This week’s Words and Music takes a journey through the SUN night from Emily Dickinson’s ecstatic ‘Wild Nights’ to the SUN hushed imaginary village of Dylan Thomas’ Llareggub. The SUN urban night is heard in Steve Reich’s ‘Electric SUN Counterpoint’, Frank Sinatra’s ‘In the wee small hours of SUN the morning’ and Robert Frost’s ‘Acquainted with the Night’ SUN in which the poet walks silently through the empty streets SUN of the city. Outside the city the Scottish poet John SUN Burnside’s poem ‘The Light Trap’ conjures up the moths SUN attracted by the light of a torch whilst Charles Tomlinson SUN describes the ‘tiny stars on darkness’ of fireflies in roses SUN at night. The sensuous and emotional power of the night is SUN heard in Symanowski’s beautiful ‘Symphony no 3 – Song of the SUN Night’, inspired by a poem by Rumi, the great Persian mystic SUN poet and exponent of Sufism. The loneliness of the lover in SUN the darkness is a theme many poets have explored – heard SUN here in Pablo Neruda’s brooding poem on lost love, ‘Tonight SUN I can write’, alongside the sultry heat of Falla’s ‘Nights SUN in the Gardens of Spain’. And the idea that night is the SUN time when thoughts come together and clarity emerges is SUN heard in a passage from Antoine Saint-Exupery’s SUN extraordinary ‘Flight to Arras’, his 1942 memoir recounting SUN his role as a pilot of a reconnaissance plane in France SUN during World War II. MON MON Giovanni Paisiello was one of the most popular opera MON composers of his day, feted all over Europe, not least by MON the greatest world leaders of the day including Napoleon, MON Catherine the Great and Emperor Joseph II. And yet, other MON than a handful of operatic arias, he's virtually unknown MON today. Donald Macleod looks at the life and times of this MON prolific composer who produced nearly 100 operas and made a MON significant contribution to the development of opera. MON MON Paisiello was an ambitious young man - although he was MON already making a name for himself around Italy, he was MON determined to win the hearts and minds of the Neapolitan MON court, one of the most flourishing centres of musical MON excellence in Europe at that time. In the first programme, MON Donald Macleod introduces excerpts from two of his comic MON operas - 'Don Chisciotte della Mancia', one of the first to MON find favour with the King of Naples, and 'La Frascatana', MON with which Paisiello launched his international career. In the first the writer MON and artist Stephen Gill, who has lived and worked for many MON years in Japan, delves into the complex feelings that people MON there have not for their most famous mountain, Fuji, but the MON one that perhaps is even more important to them - Mount MON Ogura. MON MON Mt. Ogura is Japan's 'poets' mountain', featuring in MON centuries of literature, in the works of Teika, Saigyo and MON Basho. The mountain is only 1,000 feet high, but it rises MON very steeply, with a gorge snaking round two of its sides, MON and it has attracted courtiers, priests and poets to its MON slopes in such numbers that Japan's most famous poetry MON collection, Ogura Hyakunin Isshu (One Hundred Poets, One MON Poem Each) bears its name. MON MON Yet, on its northern flank it has an enormous illegal MON rubbish-tip. When its secret was exposed a few years ago it MON caused national consternation. Work is going on now to clear MON the dump and over the past few years tons and tons of MON rubbish has been collected, as have hundreds of short poems MON about the famous mountain. It was his first official appointment and TUE with it came both security and prestige. Paisiello quickly TUE became a favourite of the court, thanks to the steady stream TUE of comic operas he produced there. Donald Macleod introduces TUE two of them: 'I filosofi immaginari' - a great favourite of TUE Catherine's, and 'La serva padrona', which recycled the TUE libretto famously set by Pergolesi 50 years earlier. And, struggling with heart disease, TUE stricken by the loss of a child and tormented by love for TUE his fickle young wife, the last thing he wanted to do was to TUE tempt fate. But in his final completed symphony, he took TUE everything the world had thrown at him, and distilled it TUE into some of the most beautiful music of the twentieth TUE century. The result is one of the defining works of its TUE time. Eight decades later, the British composer Mark Anthony TUE Turnage faced a tragedy himself, and his cello concerto Kai, TUE a heartfelt elegy to a friend who died young, is a fitting TUE complement to Mahler's vision. In the second essay TUE Howard Zhang of the BBC's Chinese Service, considers the way TUE that mountains in China have been sacred to Buddhism, Taoism TUE and Confucianism - sometimes the same mountain revered by TUE devotees of all three. Certain mountains are places of TUE pilgrimage, the Chinese word for which literally means TUE 'paying respect to the mountain', and many monasteries and TUE shrines are hidden away in the hills. TUE TUE Howard explains the attraction of mountains, throughout TUE Chinese history, to poets and artists - an attraction so TUE deep that landscape paintings are known simply as mountain TUE and river pictures - and intellectuals, who have been drawn TUE from the complex life of the city to a simple, quiet life in TUE the mountains. TUE TUE But many Chinese are newly rich, able at last and eager, to TUE travel. The holy mountains are becoming places of mass TUE tourism. Howard Zhang contemplates this dilemma and TUE considers the meanings of mountains to the Chinese today. TUE TUE Producer: Julian May. On his way back home, Paisiello THU stopped off in Vienna, where he composed the opera 'Il re THU Teodoro a Venezia' for another great supporter of his, THU Emperor Joseph II. Donald introduces the overture from this THU popular work, an excerpt from 'I giuochi d'Agrigento', THU written for the inauguration of La Fenice Opera House in THU Venice, part of an opera to celebrate a major dynastic THU wedding - 'La Daunia felice', and, by way of stark contrast, THU the pared-down beauty of Paisiello's sacred work 'Christus', THU written for Holy Week in 1794. THU THU In the third of the four concerts recorded last November by THU the Pavel Haas Quartet at LSO St. Luke's in London, the THU quartet chose two Twentieth Century Quartets from France - THU in the days of LPs these were a natural pairing - not so THU common on the concert stage - the quartets by Debussy and THU Ravel. Piano Trio No. 1 has a carefree, untroubled THU character, evident through its bright stream of spontaneous THU melodies and overriding sense of energy and vitality. THU Schubert's Second Piano Trio has a more turbulent, darker THU side, but the composer himself reputedly considered it to be THU the better work. THU Kenneth Steven's father was a lifelong climber, who reached THU the summit of his last 'Monroe' (Scottish mountains more THU than 3,000 high) when he was 89. But as a boy of eight or THU nine Kenneth was dragged up hills at every opportunity and THU resented these exhausting, thirsty excursions. He rather THU shared the view of the crofters that the hills were just THU there and to climb them without having to was puzzling. It THU was only when he left Perthshire for university in Glasgow THU that he missed their presence and began to share the love THU that writers such as the great Gaelic poet Sorley MacLean THU and Norman MacCaig expressed in their work. He returned to THU the highlands and ventured, now voluntarily, into the hills. THU But he is not concerned with conquering them; it is in the THU journey up and what he finds along the way that the THU mountains reveal their many meanings. THU THU Producer: Julian May. THU THU 23:15 Late Junction b00y6ltb (Listen) THU Max Reinhardt plays a selection of tracks to cool the heated THU brow as St Valentine's annual visit approaches, including THU Chick Corea's solo improvisations and Barber's Agnus Dei. Javier Lizarzaburu, a journalist living FRI in Lima, considers how the shrine at Pariacaca, the mountain FRI home of an important Inca oracle, was suppressed by Jesuits FRI 400 years ago, with the destruction of thousands of images FRI and the exile of its priests. FRI He considers how the mountain, which has two peaks, embodied FRI the duality of the Andean world view, and its centrality to FRI the Inca creation story. He shows how this story did not FRI disappear but absorbed the new religion, and how, although FRI suppressed, the cult of Pariacaca survives. Javier recalls a FRI friend whose grandmother told him that, rather than the old FRI man sitting in the room, the mountain outside was really his FRI grandfather.
