Associate editor of SAT the Guardian and opera fanatic, Martin Kettle, considers the SAT fact that, be it through suicide, murder, asphyxiation, SAT drowning, execution, consumption, leaping off a balcony or SAT dying in an avalanche, when it comes to the most popular SAT tragic operas, to a disconcerting extent it's the sopranos, SAT and occasionally the mezzos, who get the chop. SAT SAT SUN SUNDAY 27 FEBRUARY 2011 SUN SUN 00:00 The Early Music Show b00s1kt5 (Listen) SUN Clemens non Papa SUN SUN Lucie Skeaping explores the music of the 16th century SUN Flemish composer Jacobus Clemens non Papa. In the hierarchy SUN of the Flemish school, you could say that Clemens was of the SUN fourth generation - if Dufay is taken as the first, Ockeghem SUN as the second, Josquin the third, with Orlando di Lassus SUN still to come. He was one of the few successful Flemish SUN musicians not to travel to Italy, he spent his entire life SUN in Flanders, working in towns such as Bruges, Dordrecht and SUN Ypres. Also unlike most other composers of that period, SUN Clemens non Papa seems never to have been employed by the SUN church - at least not on a permanent basis. SUN SUN It's unclear as to how Jacobus Clemens came to adopt the SUN epithet "non Papa" - in fact, it has been the subject of SUN much conjecture. The most widely accepted version is that SUN it meant "not the Pope" Clement - presumably because Pope SUN Clement VII was in the Vatican at the time. Pope Clement SUN VII died in 1534, though, so it's possible that he may have SUN been given the nickname in childhood and it simply stuck SUN with him for the rest of his life! Certainly, the SUN Antwerp-based publisher Tielman Susato, with whom he had a SUN lucrative business partnership, seemed to find the papal SUN suffix amusing! His name is much less well known now, but SUN in the late 1500s, Clemens non Papa was one of the most SUN frequently published composers of the time. In 1578, the young king of Portugal, SUN Sebastian led an ill-considered crusade against the Moors of SUN Morocco. He was routed at the battle of Alcazar-Quivir and SUN disappeared without trace, leaving his succession and the SUN fate of his nation on a knife-edge. Of the six claimants to SUN the Portuguese monarchy, the most powerful was Philip II of SUN Spain, whose invading army conquered the country in 1581. SUN Neither Philip nor his two successors acknowledged SUN Portugal's cultural or ethnic independence and treated her SUN as nothing more than a province of Spain. Portugal's SUN considerable foreign revenue enriched the Spanish treasury, SUN while her dominance in trade & sea power was successfully SUN challenged by the English & the Dutch, thus loosening her SUN grip on her colonies in Africa, Asia and South America. This SUN period of external domination & subsequent economic decline SUN lasted for nearly 60 years until the Portuguese nobility SUN reached the end of its tether and led a revolt against their SUN oppressors in 1640, as a result of which, the Duke of SUN Braganza was declared the new & rightful king of Portugal & SUN the Algarves. One of King Joao IV's first actions was to SUN lead his countrymen in a protracted war of restoration SUN against the Spanish, whose armies were finally driven out of SUN Portuguese lands after four more years of fierce fighting. SUN Joao o Restaurador - John the Restorer - was not just a SUN successful troop-leader, though. He was also a generous SUN supporter of the arts, and a considerably talented musician SUN & composer himself. SUN SUN Today, Richard and Sara in conversation, focus on concertos SUN numbers 1, 3 and 6, with examples performed by members of SUN the Academy of Ancient Music, and look at how Bach sought to SUN encompass many musical worlds in the celebrated collection SUN of baroque masterpieces. Sara and Richard refer to the set SUN as Bach's "calling card" - a demonstration of what Bach SUN could achieve as a composer in the modern concerto form. The SUN works are generally regarded to be some of the greatest SUN instrumental music of the 18th century. The man he was SUN trying to impress was Christian Ludwig, the Margrave of SUN Brandenburg. SUN SUN Richard Egarr draws attention to many of the symbolic SUN references in these three concertos, and how these chime in SUN with many of the ideas and occupations of Bach's age. SUN SUN In the First Concerto we have music inspired by the great SUN outdoors and the hunt. SUN In the Third Concerto Bach seems to make use of numbers and SUN numerology as allegories of religion and faith. In this SUN programme he charts the intellectual currents between SUN England and Ireland in the 1840's as two nationalist SUN movements emerge onto the political stage. SUN SUN 'Young England', a Tory clique led by future Prime Minister SUN Benjamin Disraeli, wanted to reach back into history, SUN glorifying models of English medievalism and feudalism to SUN solve the chronic social problems unleashed by the SUN Industrial Revolution. Watching it closely, 'Young Ireland' SUN was born in Dublin. They were a small group of agitating SUN Repealers who also re-imagined Ireland's heroic past as a SUN way of forging a new route for Irish nationalism; breaking SUN from its father figure, Daniel O'Connell. Both groups SUN reacted against mechanistic Utilitarianism, and both groups SUN were trying to create a new politics by looking for SUN inspiration from the past. But this is also the story of a SUN British idea, used to tear apart the United Kingdom of Great SUN Britain and Ireland. SUN SUN By following the influences of Thomas Carlyle, Jeremy SUN Bentham, O'Connell, Disraeli and Gladstone, the historian SUN Tristram Hunt MP pieces together the flow of ideas between SUN these two 'Young' movements as the 'Irish question' began to SUN demand an answer. SUN SUN 22:30 Words and Music b00q900w (Listen) SUN Sons of Russia SUN SUN “In Russia one can only believe.” SUN SUN After reading Anthony Beevor’s Stalingrad, I was struck by SUN the extraordinary sense of belonging Russian troops had to SUN their country. What was it that instilled such passion in SUN the everyday “Ivan”? The word rodina (Motherland) means more SUN than just the place where one is born. It refers to a SUN collective national identity that can never be broken. SUN SUN With this in mind, I was perplexed that there didn’t seem to SUN be many strong role models in the works of Anton Chekhov and SUN other Russian dramatists and writers. Most of the men are SUN weak, susceptible, corrupted or greedy. It seems they have SUN to reach much further back to tales such as Alexander Nevsky SUN and Ivan the Terrible to find a real national hero. SUN SUN Throughout the programme, the voice of Mother Russia (read SUN by Masha Karp) interjects with passages of the romantic poet SUN Tyutchev, propaganda slogans and a Russian proverb. The SUN translations can be found below in the running order. SUN SUN To start the programme, an 11 year old Dmitri Hvorostovsky SUN sings Motherland hears, a hugely popular tune that all SUN Russians are taught from an early age. It is said that Yuri SUN Gagarin, on the first manned space orbit in 1961, whistled SUN the melody back to ground control. SUN SUN Gogol’s The Government Inspector offers a satirical cross SUN section of Russian society. Schnittke’s Gogol Suite layers SUN Mozartian motives to sardonically refer to the SUN establishment’s delusions of grandeur. SUN SUN Anton Chekhov’s dramatic works stand him out as the titan of SUN the form. Perhaps lesser known, but just as valid, his 220 SUN short stories were able to condense complex human feelings SUN and moral choices that many readers could relate to within a SUN simple narrative. In The Lady with the Dog, unrequited love SUN is directly addressed with the story of middle-aged SUN Moscovite Dmitri Gurov who meets a young wife Anna SUN Sergeyevna in a Black Sea resort. Their tryst is short but SUN the affair plagues Gurov on his return to the capital, he SUN can’t get the thought of Anna out of his mind. In Champagne, SUN the wayfarer (portrayed by Mackenzie Crook) relates the SUN story of his alcoholic descent into a dark city alleyway via SUN a desolate station in the Russian steppe. SUN SUN The character of Raskolnikov in Dostoyevsky’s Crime & SUN Punishment is devastatingly flawed. After committing the SUN bloody murder, he returns to his bedsit, where he promptly SUN falls asleep. Upon awakening he realises, in a moment of SUN panic, that there is still blood on his trousers. A SUN hypochondriac all his life, Scriabin’s The Poem of Fire SUN convincingly sets the mood. SUN SUN Lenin’s What is to be done? was written as a political SUN pamphlet in 1901. It calls for the formation of a SUN revolutionary party to direct the working class. Underneath SUN actor Jason Isaac’s oratorical reading, the music to SUN Shostakovich’s opera The Nose bombastically mocks bourgeois SUN self-importance. SUN SUN In Turgenev’s best known work Fathers & Sons, the character SUN Yevgeny Bazarov discards the outdated ways of the old SUN generation and embraces the future. In music, it can be SUN intriguing to juxtapose works from different generations. SUN Gabriel Prokofiev acknowledges that his grandfather has SUN hugely influenced his work and it is interesting to hear SUN their different (or perhaps, you may think, similar) SUN approaches to writing for string quartet. SUN SUN The programme ends with two of Chekhov’s most famous SUN dramatic works, The Cherry Orchard and Three Sisters. MON MON It's perhaps rather unfair that his reputation rests MON virtually on just one piece, although it becomes more MON understandable when one considers that he was a composer who MON was forever discarding his efforts, revising and reducing to MON such an extent, fewer than twenty works remain. Nonetheless MON during his lifetime Dukas was an influential voice in MON musical circles, comfortably sharing his time between roles MON as a musicologist, music critic and teacher. The roll-call MON of his students is impressive, including Jehan Alain, MON Maurice Duruflé, Jean Langlais and Olivier Messaien. As a MON Parisian born and bred, whose career coincided with la belle MON époque in French culture, he knew, personally, all the MON significant figures in France's musical life at this time, MON Fauré, d'Indy, Chausson, Chabrier and Debussy, whom he first MON met as a student at the Paris Conservatoire, were among the MON composers, but he also knew all the important musicians and MON literary and artistic figures too. They all seem to have MON appreciated his intelligence during this period of dramatic MON aesthetic change. Through his musical criticism he promoted MON the composers he admired, Rameau, Gluck Wagner and his MON friend Debussy. Both Debussy and Fauré appreciated his MON incisive writing, which Fauré described as being MON "remarkable, instructive and zesty"! MON MON The week begins with a look at Dukas' development up to the MON point he wrote The Sorcerer's Apprentice, including the work MON that first brought Dukas to public attention, Polyeucte, and MON an early Overture, Le roi Lear, a student work which Dukas MON never heard performed in his lifetime. TUE TUE And which also features the dance debut for actor Simon TUE Russell Beale, who plays the Duchess. TUE TUE A former member of pop band The Divine Comedy, Joby Talbot TUE has in recent years moved into composing music for ballet, TUE collaborating with choreographers such as Wheeldon and Wayne TUE McGregor. Christopher Wheeldon is the British-born darling TUE of the New York contemporary ballet scene (he was New York TUE City Ballet's resident choreographer from 2001 - 2008) and TUE is known for a style rooted in the classical tradition, but TUE with cutting edge inventiveness. TUE TUE The author and critic Michael Bracwell dreams about a TUE visitation by the legendary musician Brian Eno, who informs TUE him that 'Germany is your America', and that he should get TUE out there and explore the place. So after much speculation TUE about things German, after visits to Cologne, Munich and TUE Berlin, and after immersing himself in the music and art of TUE the country (especially electronic music and post modern TUE art) the author is ready to pronounce on his romantic and TUE prejudical responses to the country. FRI FRI "With the greatest respect to Dr Freud, I have never put FRI much store by the interpretation of dreams. But one night FRI seven years ago I had a dream which actually changed my FRI life. FRI FRI The author and critic Michael Bracewell dreams about a FRI visitation by the legendary musician Brian Eno, who informs FRI him that 'Germany is your America', and that he should get FRI out there and explore the place. So after much speculation FRI about things German, after visits to Cologne, Munich and FRI Berlin, and after immersing himself in the music and art of FRI the country (especially electronic music and post modern FRI art) the author is ready to pronounce on his romantic and FRI prejudical responses to the country. There is also its food FRI to consider. And its youthful fashions. FRI FRI What does he dig up? Lots! And in a final essay, he returns, FRI wiser, to Cologne.
