And the latest on ENO's A Midsummer Night's SAT Dream. SAT SAT Lang Lang SAT SAT Superstar pianist Lang Lang began playing the piano at the SAT age of 3, and by the age of 5 had given his first public SAT recital. At age 17 he made his dramatic debut on the world SAT stage stepping in at the last minute to perform SAT Tchaikovsky’s First Concerto with the Chicago Symphony SAT Orchestra, and since then his fame has inspired over 40 SAT million children in his native China to take up piano SAT lessons. The ‘Lang Lang effect’ led to his inclusion in Time SAT magazine’s annual list of the 100 most influential people in SAT the world in 2009. Still just 28 he balances an SAT international concert schedule with numerous master classes, SAT global advertising campaigns, media appearances, SAT ambassadorial roles and high profile performance events such SAT as the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics and the 2008 SAT Grammys. SAT SAT Tom Service meets Lang Lang at Steinway Hall in London and SAT talks about his iconic status, inspirations and future SAT plans. SAT SAT A Midsummer Night’s Dream SAT SAT Benjamin Britten’s operatic version of Shakespeare’s A SAT Midsummer Night’s Dream was written for the 1960 Aldeburgh SAT Festival. Despite being conceived and created in less than a SAT year it was an instant success. A new production opened this SAT week at English National Opera which reveals the darkness in SAT the Dream - setting the opera in a school where Oberon and SAT Tytania use Puck and the children, who play the fairies, as SAT their playthings – in every sense. SAT SAT Tom talks to director Christopher Alden about his SAT controversial production and is joined by critics Fiona SAT Maddocks and Peter Conrad to review the opening night. SAT SAT Mahler in Leipzig – Riccardo Chailly SAT SAT This week saw the 100th anniversary of the death of Gustav SAT Mahler. SAT SAT To commemorate this anniversary the Leipzig Gewandhaus have SAT just begun a 12 day festival in which all ten of the SAT composer’s symphonies are performed by some of the world’s SAT greatest orchestras. Mahler himself arrived in the city aged SAT 26 in 1886, taking up an assistant conductor role at the SAT Neues Theater. He went on to compose his First Symphony in SAT only six weeks. SAT SAT Tom talks to Riccardo Chailly about how his own relationship SAT with Mahler has deepened since taking over at the Gewandhaus SAT Orchestra six years ago and about Mahler’s relationship with SAT the city in which he became a symphonist. SAT SAT McBurney on Mahler SAT SAT Writer, Director and Actor Simon McBurney presents a SAT personal meditation on the universal and philosophical yet SAT intimate power of Mahler’s music. SAT SAT His memories of listening to the Tenth Symphony with his SAT mother, frame a mesmerising reflection on Mahler’s creative SAT universe, connecting the theories of Einstein, Freud, and SAT Max Planck with the substance of his symphonies and SAT song-cycles. In recent SAT years neuroscience has begun to find out more about the SAT brain's activities, and now it is possible to hear the sound SAT of a brain having a fit. The sound of epilepsy is not a SAT jagged rasping, not spikes of sound - but more like the SAT sound of whale song, a plaintive cry for help, a call in the SAT wild. How does an artist go about creating a work of art to SAT reflect this? SAT SAT Artist Susan Aldworth has been commissioned to make a series SAT of artworks reflecting epilepsy for both St Thomas' Hospital SAT in Westminster and the National Portrait Gallery; and in the SAT pursuit of one portrait in particular she has placed SAT centre-stage her close friend Max Eilenberg: SAT SAT "If you're blind, you're blind. You don't have blindness. If SAT you've got a cold, you've got a cold. You are not cold. I SAT have got epilepsy and I am epileptic. It's a constituent SAT part of me in the same way as if I'd been born with one SAT leg." SAT SAT This programme follows Aldworth as she goes about finding SAT more about her friend, his epilepsy, and the way the SAT condition is being studied. SAT SAT Her own particular interest in the relationship of The Self SAT to the physical brain came after seeing inside her own SAT brain, real time, during a diagnostic brain scan ten years SAT ago on Christmas Day. SAT SAT "You are lying on a bed looking up at your brain scan live SAT on a bank of monitors. You are seeing the inside of your SAT brain with your brain. You are thinking about what you are SAT seeing with what you are seeing on the screen. You are SAT looking inside your head whilst thinking, seeing, feeling - SAT your brain is working whilst you are looking inside it. But SAT where is the "me" in all this?" (Susan Aldworth) SAT SAT Through her own audio diaries and interviews with Max, we SAT hear her become closer to her subject and her friend. She SAT talks with him about philosophical notions of personal SAT identity in relation to the impact of the absences which SAT define epilepsy. SAT SAT "It is an assault, and an insult to everything I would like SAT to think of as myself. I can't therefore say that my brain SAT and myself are identical, I have to say that my brain wipes SAT my sense of self clean." (Max Eilenberg) SAT SAT At the University of Newcastle she visits the SAT neuroscientists, Dr Fiona Le Beau and Professor Miles SAT Whittington, who have recorded for the first time the sound SAT of a brain having an epileptic episode, before confronting SAT Max with the portrait of himself. As a new art gallery, The SUN Hepworth Wakefield opens in Yorkshire, historian Juliet SUN Gardiner talks to those who knew her. Juliet visits SUN Wakefield, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and St. Ives to talk SUN to those who know Hepworth's work and speaks to her SUN daughter, Lady Sarah Bowness, her granddaughter, Sophie SUN Bowness and Hepworth's son-in-law, Sir Alan Bowness. SUN SUN She was born in 1903 and won a musical scholarship to SUN Wakefield Girls school. A woman with artistic hands who SUN declared as a teenager that she wanted to be a sculptor. An SUN unusual choice too back then with no female role models in SUN the sculpture world. SUN SUN As a young girl, she would enjoy going on drives with her SUN father through the rolling Yorkshire countryside and spoke SUN often of how the undulating landscape informed some of her SUN sculptures. She won a scholarship to Leeds Art School at the SUN age of sixteen and met fellow sculptor, Henry Moore there. SUN Together they journeyed south to London and studied at the SUN Royal College of Art. SUN SUN Hepworth went on a travel scholarship to Italy after the RCA SUN and this reinforced her desire to be a carver. She came back SUN married to fellow sculptor, John Skeaping and they settled SUN down in studios in Hampstead. Her first born son, Paul SUN became the model for one of her popular early wooden SUN carvings, 'Infant'. SUN SUN She later married artist Ben Nicholson and in 1934 they SUN became parents to triplets. There's the Cyril Connolly SUN quote: "the pram in the hallway is the enemy of creativity" SUN - they now had three prams and the couple put the triplets SUN into a nearby nursery whilst they carried on with their art. SUN They were both now leading lights in the emerging modernist SUN movement. SUN SUN They decided that with war imminent to leave London and SUN drove to stay with a friend in St. Ives with the triplets SUN and a nanny. For Hepworth, it was to be her home for the SUN rest of her life. Her work is in private and public SUN collections all over the world with her largest work, Single SUN Form, standing outside the United Nations in New York. SUN SUN A new gallery designed by Sir David Chipperfield will open SUN in her hometown this May. The Hepworth Wakefield will SUN showcase some of her plasters and key works alongside a SUN changing display from modern artists. SUN SUN Producer: Sarah Taylor. SUN SUN 22:15 Words and Music b011cjkz (Listen) SUN The Gothic SUN SUN The creeping, menacing, darkness of Verdi’s Prelude to SUN Macbeth raises the curtain on the entrancing, unsettling SUN world of The Gothic. Born of the twin eighteenth century SUN literary fascinations of romanticism and the sublime, gothic SUN literature took readers to cliff top castles, on Byronic SUN journeys through unnatural tempests and into the more SUN disturbing realms of imagination. SUN SUN This was a genre designed to deliver a pleasurable thrill of SUN terror and it gave rise to great literature. As ever, SUN Shakespeare looms large - his Lady Macbeth was arguably the SUN first gothic heroine and her chilling demand for SUN supernatural powers to ‘unsex me now’ starts our shadowy SUN journey. Mary Shelley’s entry in an 1816 story telling SUN competition bestowed upon the world a spine chilling monster SUN of a book which has lurked in the public consciousness ever SUN since. SUN SUN The name Frankenstein has become a metaphor in its own SUN right. In the programme you’ll hear the poignant moment when SUN Frankenstein’s monster suffers the painfully human sensation SUN of remorse after the murder of his creator. Nineteenth SUN century gothic revivalism in architecture revelled in the SUN macabre, gargoyle-encrusted grandeur of medieval religious SUN buildings. SUN SUN We step inside Ernest Walsh’s Cathedral accompanied by the SUN echoing enormity of Poulenc’s concerto for organ, strings SUN and timpani. The unearthly music of Perotin, one of the SUN twelfth century composers who served their apprenticeship SUN amidst the gothic splendour of Notre Dame, evokes the SUN ethereal majesty of a cathedral space with his Beata SUN Viscera. Gregory Lewis’ The Monk takes gothic religiosity in SUN a slightly more eccentric direction. SUN SUN This tale of a lustful man of the cloth trying to overcome SUN his demons has all the elements of gothic- gone-mad: we hear SUN the moment when a devilish preacher with SUN Pride!Lust!Inhumanity! written on his forehead lunges at an SUN alter-bound virgin; an ideal introduction to Carl Orff’s SUN demonic O Fortuna. While the gothic in music and literature SUN is most often associated with darkness and fear; some of its SUN defining principles come from the light infused excitement SUN of romantic writing. SUN SUN Wordsworth’s Tintern Abbey, with its rapturous paean to the SUN haunting power of nature, shows us the roots of the gothic SUN preoccupation with ever heightened sensation. We finally SUN arrive at another iconic gothic location at the close of the SUN programme. Léonie Adams’ pealing evocation of a Bell Tower SUN is musically matched by Tallis’ luminous O Nata Lux, SUN allowing us to step momentarily out of the shadows and into SUN the light. These days, almost MON inevitably, the career of Carl Philip Emmanuel, Johann MON Sebastian's second son - and those of the other Bach MON children - are almost entirely obscured by the reputation of MON their father.
