But that's far less true of music than SAT of visual art or science. In today's Music Feature Catherine SAT Bott goes in search of a composer born 500 years ago who SAT found that being a *musical* innovator was no easy task: SAT Nicola Vicentino. SAT SAT Imagine an octave divided into 31 parts - 31 very small SAT intervals, 'microtones' - rather than the 12 semitones we're SAT used to today. Sounds weird - and it sounded weird to people SAT when Vicentino first came up with idea in the 1500s. 'But SAT opposition won't stop me,' he said. He composed microtonal SAT music, he built a 'superharpsichord' (archicembalo) and SAT 'superorgan' to play it, he trained choirs to sing it, he SAT wrote a book promoting it. SAT SAT 'Learning and investigating new things - that's human SAT nature' was Vicentino's motto. Every page of his book is SAT filled with 'my ideas'. His radical musical ideas provoked SAT every possible reaction - from vitriolic hostility to SAT fanatical support. Traditionalists were horrified. Some of SAT the most powerful people in Italy gave Vicentino their SAT patronage. Adoring pupils dubbed him Arcimusico - the SAT Arch-Musician. SAT SAT In this programme, Catherine Bott uncovers Vicentino's SAT remarkable story, exploring what it meant to be a musical SAT innovator in sixteenth-century Italy. How did Vicentino come SAT up with his ideas? How did he try to sell them? Why did SAT people react in the way they did? What were the consequences SAT - for Vicentino himself, and for the future of music? SAT SAT Perhaps the biggest obstacle Vicentino faced is that his SAT music is very hard to perform. But in the twenty-first SAT century people are at last beginning to prove it's possible. SAT Catherine Bott has a go herself, and meets other people SAT who've tried - including members of the BBC Singers who SAT tackled Vicentino's music specially for this programme with SAT conductor James Weeks. SAT SAT With Anton Lesser as Vicentino and contributions from SAT Manfred Cordes, Davide Daolmi, Mary Hollingsworth, Margaret SAT Hunter, Lewis Jones, Laurie Stras, James Weeks, Jon Wild and SAT members of the BBC Singers. SAT SAT 13:00 The Early Music Show b012r89k (Listen) SAT Composer Portrait: Tomas Luis de Victoria SAT SAT Catherine Bott presents a profile of the great Spanish SAT composer, Tomás Luis de Victoria, who died in 1611. He SAT dedicated his musical life to the Church, working both in SAT his native Spain and in Italy; all his compositions are SAT vocal, sacred and in Latin. Although he was not as prolific SAT a composer as some of his contemporaries, Victoria is now SAT generally regarded as one of the greatest of Renaissance SAT composers, his music characterised by its emotional SAT intensity. Catherine Bott celebrates the genius of his SAT music, and plays recordings of some of Victoria's powerfully SAT moving music, including settings of Marian antiphons and SAT Mass settings. Bach, "composed for music lovers to SAT refresh their spirits" according to its first edition. SAT SAT Consisting of an exquisitely beautiful aria and a set of 30 SAT variations, this is one of the great examples of variation SAT form as well as a peak of the keyboard repertoire. These SAT days the Goldberg Variations are often played on the piano SAT by performers who believe the piano is a more communicative SAT instrument, but Esfahani dismisses the views of those who SAT think the harpsichord inexpressive in one word - "absurd!". SAT SAT Making the tricky journey to Northen Sri Lanka, along the SAT bumpy A9 highway flanked by military checkpoints and gun SAT posts, Lucy Duran and Hari Sivanesan head to the lively town SAT of Jaffna, where Hari lived briefly as a baby before SAT spending the rest of his life in London. They visit a SAT riotous Temple Chariot Festival as the country celebrates SAT New Year, and Hari meets and plays with one of the foremost SAT performers in the Carnatic tradition, violinist SAT Radakrishnan. SAT SAT They watch a performance by a troupe of Vasanthan Koothu SAT dancers, who have not been able to return to their village SAT because of the strict military control over certain High SAT Security Zones, and are now the sole custodians of this SAT rural song and dance tradition. As night draws in, Hari and SAT Lucy meet with a group of women who sing a disappearing SAT lullaby tradition, and who also sing mourning songs. The SAT painful reality is that each of the women has lost a husband SAT or a son in the civil conflict that tore the country apart, SAT and as they talk they perform these heart rending laments SAT bringing Sri Lankas recent past into sharp focus. 'Music Planet' visited the same locations and SAT environments, and explored the music of those places. The TV SAT score is interleaved with Music Planet artists, starting SAT with the mighty voice of Greenland's Rasmus Lyberth, SAT followed by Zambian singer and storyteller Enock Mbongwe, SAT and Mongolian throat-singers Khusugtun. Later on, Ayarkhaan, SAT three women from the Sakha Republic, create a thunderous SAT sound from their mouth harps, and the Bibilang Shark-Calling SAT Group perform their unique repertoire of songs for shark SAT hunting. SUN SUN 22:15 Words and Music b012r961 (Listen) SUN Obsession SUN SUN “Obsession requires a commendable mental agility”, according SUN to Nick Hornby and this edition of Words and Music wrestles SUN with ideas and habits that inexorably take hold of the SUN brain. SUN SUN There is nothing more absorbing than being in the throes of SUN love, and the more unrequited it is, the more obsessive the SUN lover becomes. SUN SUN The programme starts with the rather chilling, in this SUN context, insistent drum beat and stalkerish sentiments of SUN Cole Porter’s “Night and Day” before poems by Yeats and SUN Ronsard on the sheer helplessness of passion. Berlioz was a SUN sucker for unrequited love throughout his life, a great SUN exponent of the idée fixe in music, and here he is in the SUN early heady days of his highly gothic fixation with Harriet SUN Smithson (he went off her after he finally won her…), both SUN in his own words, and in part of his Symphonie Fantastique, SUN where he dreams he has killed his love and is about to die SUN himself. SUN SUN Shakespeare and Sondheim admit to being incapable of doing SUN anything except constantly wonder where their love is and SUN what they are doing, but with Ian McEwan’s “Enduring Love” SUN things tip over into something far more dangerous – the SUN stalker. Police’s classic song “Every Breath You Take” was SUN designed not as a love song, but as a sinister piece about SUN surveillance and control. SUN SUN Teenagers are the world champions at obsessive love, and SUN Rosamond Lehmann’s “Dusty Answer” and Allison Pearson’s “I SUN think I love you” show that basic sentiments haven’t changed SUN over the decades. Romantically dying of love is also popular SUN in the world of lieder, with Schubert’s “The Brook’s SUN Lullaby” taking it to the inevitable conclusion. SUN SUN The quietly insistent music of Philip Glass leads away from SUN romantic love to other passions that are just as SUN all-consuming. Nick Hornby writes for the football SUN obsessive, Shel Silverstein for the hoarder, Jerome K. SUN Jerome for the hypochondriac, doing the 19th century SUN equivalent of googling his symptoms. And more seriously, SUN Boswell appears to be describing something very like SUN obsessive compulsive disorder in the great Dr Johnson. SUN SUN For self-obsession, who else but Dorian Gray, read against SUN part of Schumann’s “Forest Scenes”, music he demands that SUN his portrait painter should lend him. He MON was hooked at the age of four. It's given him plenty of time MON to fathom what it is that makes this theatrical form impinge MON so powerfully. He argues that while it might seem grand, MON flamboyant, passionate and overtly emotional, when you look MON more closely it's the intimacy of it that counts. The aria, MON and Tom believes these are at its core, is a confessional MON form. It might be launched into a huge auditorium with MON gut-busting zeal and massive vocal projection, but what it MON does is to open the character's emotions up to the audience MON by way of the music. The music, the singing, is everything, MON and it's why the aria, which Tom believes is opera's version MON of the cinematic close-up, is so important. MON MON There are plenty of other elements that contribute. MON Relevance in setting and substance can be too slavishly MON observed but they matter as well. Laced with his MON recollections of the good and the bad in his many years as a MON critic, Tom makes the case for opera by going beyond the MON usual cliche's and enthusiasms for grandeur and beauty. And yet - like its creator, the TUE noseless poet laureate Sir William Davenant - it is almost TUE totally forgotten today. TUE TUE Why is this seminal work, the first opera in English to be TUE performed publicly, now so largely ignored? No doubt it's TUE partly because the music - which the enchanted Pepys TUE desperately tried to obtain for himself in the early 1660s - TUE is lost, but the reasons for its neglect are more TUE complicated than that. TUE TUE As we discover from a variety of contributors, the neglected TUE Davenant was actually one of the most innovative forces in TUE the history of English theatre - not only did he "invent" TUE English opera, he was also very instrumental in the creation TUE of the idea of Shakespeare the National Poet and claimed to TUE be spiritually and perhaps even biologically the "Son of TUE Shakespeare". TUE TUE Travelling from Cromwell's House in Ely via Pepys' Library TUE in Cambridge and Shakespeare's Globe to the site of the old TUE Cockpit Theatre in London where the Siege was performed, TUE presenter Claire van Kampen traces the complicated genesis TUE and afterlife of this lost operatic treasure. The programme TUE follows the royalist Davenant's extraordinary travails in TUE the Civil War and afterwards, uncovering the shady political TUE machinations that led to Davenant being granted permission TUE to stage the first English opera while all other dramatic TUE activities remained strictly forbidden, and culminates in an TUE attempt - the first in around 350 years - to reimagine what TUE the music that so obsessed Pepys might actually have sounded TUE like. A classically TUE trained singer, he reflects on the way opera has changed the TUE lives of people he's met during the past ten years. TUE TUE Whilst Matt certainly doesn't claim that Streetwise has TUE solved the problems of homelessness, he speaks with passion TUE about how opera is for everyone. He argues that the teamwork TUE necessary in opera is a perfect way of engaging the 600 TUE homeless people around the UK who undertake the weekly opera TUE projects. If you can't sing a solo, you can join in the TUE chorus. If you don't want to sing, you can make props or TUE help with costumes. The massive scale of an opera means TUE that, for his team, there's a role for everyone and a reason TUE to turn up every week. TUE TUE Over the years, his opera company have received warm reviews TUE for their performances. And the somewhat surprising success TUE of using opera as a means of support and rehabilitation of TUE homeless people is now being tried in other countries. TUE TUE Producer: Sarah Taylor. The multi award winning pianist, Jean-Efflam THU Bavouzet, plays one of the most technically challenging of THU all piano concertos, and the programme opens with Kodaly's THU effervescent dances. THU THU After declaring for years that: 'Anything to do with Goethe THU is dangerous to handle,' Liszt finally found inspiration for THU his 'three character portraits' after a visit from the THU novelist, George Eliot. Written in THU 2008 at the age of 99, it contrasts the flute's lyrical THU qualities with a percussive orchestral texture. Dalbavie set THU out to write a homage to Debussy, and whilst his concerto is THU certainly rooted in the great French tradition, it's also THU full of fireworks and exploding excitement. THU THU Writer Ian Sansom investigates the artistic, cultural and THU philosophical history of shoes - from God instructing Moses THU to take off his sandals in front of the burning bush, to the THU cult of the Louboutin - and goes in search of a nice pair of THU handbenched English shoes. THU THU He explores the Freudian shoe, fairy tale shoes, Van Gogh's THU boots (as interpreted by Heidegger and Derrida), Holocaust THU shoes, Jesus sandals, killer heels and poems and images of THU people traipsing and fleeing. THU THU 21:45 Sunday Feature b00t6vcm (Listen) THU After a Dancemaker Dies THU THU An urgent and lively documentary asking can - and should - THU modern dances survive the deaths of their makers? Isn't THU dance an art of the present tense? Presented by the dance THU programme-maker, Frances Byrnes. THU THU Merce Cunningham and the German dance-theatre maker Pina THU Bausch both made masterworks which have been seminal in the THU development of modern dance theatre. Both made a world THU onstage which did not exist anywhere else, and kingdoms off THU stage too: typically for the pioneers of modern movement, THU both established their own companies, named after them and THU dancing only their works. Both choreographers changed their THU works, for different dancers, spaces, times. Now they leave THU recordings of the art, not the art itself. The art only THU exists in live performance. THU THU This programme visits the Cunningham Studio in New York and THU Tanztheater Wuppertal to find out from their exceptional THU movers and shakers (Robert Swinston, Patricia Lent in the THU US, Dominique Mercy in Germany): What will happen to the THU dances? What qualities will make a few of their dances live THU on? Will having a Legacy Plan (as the Merce Cunningham Trust THU has) help? THU THU We visit Josephine Ann Endicott (re-staging Kontakthof after THU Bausch) and Jeannie Steele (reviving RainForest without THU Cunningham): what are the challenges to keeping the dance THU alive - neither in aspic, nor overly altered? Ash THU realised he was never good enough to be a professional opera THU singer, but it didn't stop him taking part as student. Born THU in Bombay, he discovered opera whilst a student at Oxford, THU fell in love with it and the seed was sown. He's spent the THU past 15 years watching practically every new production not THU only in this continent but around the globe including places THU where you would least expect to find opera, such as Hanoi, THU Istanbul and Ulan Bator. FRI FRI All the composers are masters of orchestral colour, and each FRI creates a unique and concentrated soundworld. Arthur FRI Honegger's depictions of a steam locomotive and pastoral FRI idyll are followed by Frank Bridge's quietly anguished FRI Shakespearean scene of death by drowning (from Hamlet) and FRI the splintered, wintry fluidity of Italian composer Niccolò FRI Castiglioni. FRI FRI Soprano Claire Booth (who made her professional debut in the FRI music of Knussen) sings Berg's heady paean to the FRI restorative powers of fermented grape juice. And the concert FRI closes with Debussy's astonishing, inspirational evocation FRI of shifting seas. FRI FRI 22:00 Sunday Feature b00v7sjy (Listen) FRI Harvesting the Archive FRI FRI In this literary celebration of the work of a great writer FRI and thinker, we evaluate John Berger's donation of his FRI archive to the British library and ponder the meaning of FRI archives. John Berger characteristically didn't want to FRI consider any kind of "mercantile" approach to the archiving FRI of his writings. So he donated them to the British Library. FRI In this public institution, he hopes the reader will enter FRI "the company of the past" as they open any one of the 80 FRI boxes of his materials. The reader will come across FRI countless letters because Berger was a keen letter writer as FRI well as a creative collaborator. For Berger the words of FRI others in his archive are perhaps more important than his FRI own words. But for the young cataloguer who was chosen to FRI work through the material and write about it, it is a chance FRI to re-evaluate a writer and see the archive as a work of art FRI in itself - in effect to publish it for the public. FRI FRI For the curator of modern literary manuscripts, Jamie FRI Andrews, this acquisition is particularly special because he FRI loves Berger's writing and because Berger invited him to his FRI farm on the Franco-Swiss border. This was part of a very FRI Berger-esque deal: Jamie got the archive but he had to come FRI and help pack it up and also help the villagers with the FRI haymaking because it was harvest time. Keen to share the FRI adventure and the role of the library with the public, Jamie FRI Andrews used new "audioboo" software to upload his FRI commentaries. FRI FRI We also hear from Berger expert and writer Geoff Dyer and FRI from composer Gavin Bryars who wrote music for Berger's FRI series of letters about art and colour "I Send You This FRI Cadmium Red" (broadcast in Radio 3's Between the Ears FRI series). FRI FRI Harvesting the Archive is presented and produced by Judith FRI Kampfner. FRI Sound design by Jon Calver. FRI FRI 22:45 The Essay b00skcbl (Listen) FRI A Passion for Opera, Michael Chance FRI FRI Counter Tenor Michael Chance is one of Britain's great opera FRI stars. But it's an unofficial title that has come at a cost. FRI While Germany is full of opera houses with permanent FRI ensembles where singers can get to know each other and work FRI together on a series of different productions, Michael is a FRI permanent guest. He's had to get used to living out of a FRI suitcase, settling in to a lodging house or hotel room for a FRI month and bonding with a new cast, a new director and new FRI conductor, only to be off and away the moment the production FRI is up and running. FRI These are the confessions of the long distance opera singer. FRI FRI The benefits have been a chance to see the world's stages FRI and work with some of the greats. The down-side is that the FRI whole business of teamwork, of developing together, of FRI celebrating together is very limited. FRI And of course there's the family. The pull between work and FRI home is constant and doesn't get any easier over time.
