His music - from slow meditative pieces SAT to fast jokey ones with a flavour of the cabaret - was SAT astonishingly individual; and his way of life was just as SAT weird. Not least because he never had any money. SAT SAT In 1898 Satie moved from the heart of bohemian Paris to the SAT obscure suburb of Arcueil. No doubt he was desperate to save SAT money - but he also liked the idea of cutting himself off SAT from the musical establishment. Every day for a decade or SAT more he would walk the 10 kilometres north across the city SAT to earn a meagre living playing the piano in the cabarets of SAT Montmartre. If he missed the last train - or couldn't afford SAT it - he'd walk home again at night. He walked, he looked, he SAT listened - and he spent plenty of time in cafes, where he SAT drank, talked to friends and strangers, and even wrote SAT music. SAT SAT Sarah Walker retraces Satie's footsteps from Arcueil to SAT Montmartre - and uncovers the secrets behind his unique SAT music: in the people and street life of Paris, its cafés and SAT cabarets, and in the very act of walking itself. SUN SUN 22:15 Words and Music b013xq9t (Listen) SUN The Exotic SUN SUN The desire for discovery and the fascination with far-off SUN lands, varied and savage in their beauty, is at the heart of SUN the romantic impulse in poetry and music. Byron’s Childe SUN Harold wanders through the unknown; his enchantment and SUN occasional fear a precursor of the nineteenth century SUN obsession with the exotic: from the percussive camp of SUN Gilbert and Sullivan’s vision of Japan in The Mikado, to SUN Joseph Conrad’s menacing, enthralling journey through the SUN African jungle in Heart of Darkness. Yet the pull of the SUN exotic, the intrigue one culture holds for another, long SUN pre-dates the romantics. SUN SUN The programme opens with Shakespeare’s vision of perhaps the SUN most exotic of all history’s beauties: Cleopatra. Her SUN majestic arrival on a barge with silver oars, steered by SUN mermaid-like attendants and accompanied by a mysterious, SUN seductive aroma could only find equivalent musical SUN expression in Saint-Saëns’ sensual Bacchanale from his opera SUN charting the fortunes of another great seductress: Samson et SUN Delilah. From the arrival of an exotic Egyptian beauty we SUN travel to Spain by way of Albeniz’s evocative Sevilla to SUN Byron’s ‘lovely girl of Cadiz’. She and Cleopatra personify SUN the allure of the exotic: sensuous, mysterious - and to a SUN certain extent -downright unrealistic. SUN SUN The fear of the foreign, the danger of the unknown, lurks SUN beneath even the most exalted visions of exoticism. Blake’s SUN wonderment in The Tyger; at the heart-stopping savagery of SUN this creature, awesome and terrifying in equal measure, SUN characterises much of the artistic response to exotic SUN climes, creatures or characters. This shadowy hinterland SUN between fear and fascination is what gives Thomas Ades’ SUN Ariel such ethereal beauty. But tackling exotic subject SUN matter also allows composers to fully indulge their musical SUN imaginations: from Mozart’s lush overture to his Turkish SUN adventure The Abduction from the Seraglio to Messiaen’s SUN exquisite interplay of piano and orchestra in Oiseaux SUN Exotiques. But in the year of Barber's centenary, is this a MON realistic summary of a man whose work is still relatively MON unknown amongst the general public save for his mega-hit MON choral work 'Agnus Dei', itself a reworking of a movement MON from his first string quartet? MON MON This week Donald Macleod tells the story of the real Samuel MON Barber, from his childhood experiences playing amongst the MON shipping tags at his grandfather's factory to his final MON years, when he was mortally scarred by the failure of what MON was supposed to be his crowning achievement in music. MON MON Along the way, he charts a number of relationships which MON were to make a defining impression on him, including rare MON interview footage with the likes of composer Gian Carlo MON Menotti (Barber's lifelong partner), Aaron Copland, and also MON the soprano Leontyne Price who became one of his most MON trusted collaborators. MON MON An even more complex relationship which he battled with MON throughout his career was that with his country. Despite MON becoming that emblem of national pride, Barber never felt MON comfortable as a cultural ambassador for America. Even when MON he joined the army it was very much on his own terms, in MON fact he displayed impressive negotiating skills in carving MON himself the perfect niche as a composing combatant, able to MON call upon all manner of military performing resources. MON MON But Donald Macleod begins Barber's story closer to home, in MON West Chester Pennsylvania, where the composer forged perhaps MON the most influential musical relationship in his life. His MON singing uncle, Sydney Homer, was to be a constant MON inspiration, always at hand to encourage his nephew as he MON became one of the first ever students at the Curtis MON Institute. Barber even followed him into an early singing MON career, as we hear in some of the few commercial recordings MON he made. Conductor Paul McCreesh breathes new life into it TUE in this performance with period instruments, a raft of TUE enthusiastic choirs and a starry line-up of soloists. TUE TUE Mendelssohn wrote Elijah for the 1846 Birmingham Festival TUE and clearly set out to create a work in the tradition of his TUE revered Baroque predecessors, Bach and Handel. Opinions have TUE differed as to whether he succeeded, with some people TUE finding Elijah full of Victorian sentimentality. TUE TUE 22:15 Sunday Feature b00smpd5 (Listen) TUE Robert Schumann and the Music of the Future TUE TUE The music composed by Robert Schumann in the last years of TUE his life has long been the subject of debate. That he ended TUE up incarcerated in an asylum near Bonn is well known - but TUE how has what we know of the life story impacted on the way TUE the later music has been received? Undoubtedly different TUE from his earlier music, to some it is clearly the product of TUE a diseased mind and represents a tailing-off of creativity; TUE others view these works as the fruits of a consciously new, TUE and incredibly modern, compositional direction. Cellist TUE Steven Isserlis has long been a passionate advocate of TUE Schumann's late music and sets out to discover more about TUE the forces that shaped it. With the help of conductor Sir TUE John Eliot Gardiner, pianists Graham Johnson and Andras TUE Schiff, Schumann biographer John Worthen, writer and TUE broadcaster Judith Chernaik, musicologist Laura Tunbridge, TUE and composer Wolfgang Rihm, Isserlis finds a composer far TUE more engaged with the world around him than is generally TUE assumed, and someone for whom the future of German music was TUE a burning concern. They THU begin with an early score by Webern and are then joined by THU Gil Shaham for Bruch's ever-popular 1st Violin Concerto. THU They end their concert in Spain, seen through both native THU and Russian eyes. THU THU The Israel Philharmonic is 75 years old this year and THU Bombay-born Zubin Mehta has been the orchestra's Music THU Director for the last 40 of those years. Their Prom THU programme reflects his wide musical interests, from the THU music of 20th-century Vienna (where he was educated) to THU colourful music that he has always conducted so well. THU THU The concert's second half certainly falls into this THU category, with pieces by Albeniz describing scenes from his THU native Spain. They were originally written for piano and THU have now been given glittering orchestral colours. The THU sparkle continues with Rimsky-Korsakov's 'Spanish Caprice', THU based on Spanish folksong and with the orchestra evoking the THU sounds of guitars and rustic revelry. It's a time of firsts. I've never met THU people who don't speak English before: I'd worked out that THU people in my house speak differently from people in my THU school who speak differently again from the people in my THU home city, but French is another thing entirely - I'm not THU sure if human beings are always going to suddenly become THU incomprehensible. It's my first - and I hope only - major THU loss of teeth. My milk teeth are dropping out in handfulls, THU usually whenever I eat a baguette, which I'm doing a lot. THU These are also my first baguettes, but I don't take against THU them - I just accidentally swallow a lot of teeth and find - THU as we sit on the boulevards and I smile gappily - that THU Parisians love nothing better than a gappy little kid. I am THU doted upon with regularity, just for grinning. We are a THU middle class family - anxiously so, given that both my THU parents weren't born that way - so we have to engage in THU strenuous educational activities. This might be pleasant if THU it weren't so hot, we didn't get lost so often and my father THU were not biologically unable to ask for directions. I grow THU used to long, long marches between pale walls and pavements, THU all humming with heat. I get thirsty. My parents are uneasy THU with each other because they are always uneasy with each THU other. If they are not uneasy, they will fight. The French THU seem nicer and kiss each other a lot. I also get drunk for THU the first time - France being the land of rhum babas and THU rhum baba being one of the few things I say in French at THU this stage. It wasn't a happy holiday, my parents didn't THU have a happy marriage and have not endeared the institution THU to me - but Paris was wonderful and has been ever since." THU THU 21:45 Sunday Feature b00szh08 (Listen) THU In Search of Gustav Mahler THU THU Marking the centenary of Gustav Mahler's death, Norman THU Lebrecht travels in the footsteps of the composer in search THU of those whose lives have been touched and changed by his THU music. THU THU Beginning in the woods of Gustav Mahler's childhood, THU Lebrecht talks of a child who's so terrified by what's going THU on at home that he runs away deep into the woods where he THU sits on a log - listening. Something that he heard there THU became part of him. The noise of the wind blowing through THU the pines sounds like the note A - the note he starts his THU first symphony with not many years later. A long drawn out A THU - the A, Lebrecht says, that has made his Gustav Mahler. THU THU In search of Gustav Mahler, Lebrecht visits not just the THU places he lived and the music he made, but the people who THU are alive today who have been touched by his music. Mahler THU was able to bring them face to face with themselves and gave THU them the means to continue. THU THU Mahler was born in the tiny village of Kaliste in the Czech THU Republic - a few houses around a murky pond where his THU father's distillery is in ruins and is now for sale. There, THU Jiri Stilec has transformed the house where Mahler was born THU into a museum. Stilec says that when he had problems with THU his marriage, he used Mahler's 4th Symphony as medicine - THU the long melancholic melodies of the slow movement gave him THU hope. "It's really very deep music that gives me peace. It's THU like a drug." THU THU At the opera house in Vienna where Mahler was director, the THU music archivist there is Peter Poltun. A former American THU diplomat to Turkey he used the 4th Symphony as an escape THU from the difficulties he encountered when in negotiations THU with security officers during the violence that engulfed THU Turkey of the 1970s. "There are dangerous emotions in this THU music. The sense of death and destruction is so strong you THU begin seeing everything through the prism of this music. THU It's frightening music" says Poltun. THU THU Philosopher, Professor Anthony Grayling talks of how Mahler THU approached his music. THU "I find Mahler very moving", says Grayling. "Not just THU emotionally, but intellectually. I find myself being drawn THU into the sense of the profound suffering in the world, but THU not in a way that makes me mourn it, but in a way that turns THU emotions into structures. It's an experience you become THU addicted to and you need it. You've got to go back to it and THU listen to it again and again." THU THU "As a jazz musician the chords are just too delicious", says THU jazz pianist and composer Uri Caine who performs improvised THU sections of both the 1st and 5th Symphonies. "There's THU something just so aching about the harmony and so THU passionate. He's trying to embrace the whole world and THU include all the different aspects of his life in his music." THU THU Renate Stark-Voigt is a musicologist who's spent years THU working on a complete and final edition of the 2nd Symphony. THU She describes hearing the adagietto from the 5th Symphony THU for the first time - it had such an affect on her that she THU had to spend weeks in the public rental library listening to THU the music again and again on LP. She became a music scholar THU because she had to understand what was behind Mahler's music THU and why it had such an effect on her. Yet there were times THU when she simply couldn't listen to his music. She describes THU how when her first child died, she couldn't hear any of his THU works. "I had periods when I couldn't hear a note of Mahler THU - when I was not strong, Mahler was too much for me." THU THU Travelling from Kaliste, the village of his birth to Jihlava THU the town of his childhood in the Czech Republic, Lebrecht THU then moves to Vienna where Mahler was director of the Opera, THU and on to Klagenfurt in the south of Austria, almost in the THU Balkans where after 3 years at the opera and as a powerful THU man in the land, he builds a composing cabin deep in the THU woods. It's here where he finds the voice he was looking for THU ever since he was an infant - in the heart of nature, THU untroubled by the human conflicts he explores in his THU symphonies; he composed some of his darkest music here. THU THU Lebrecht says: "There are times when I've needed Mahler more THU than anything else on earth - times when I've been so unsure THU or frightened or confused about the state of my world only THU Mahler would have the answer. Mahler can do many things - he THU can address you, he can harangue you, he can tease you, he THU can do many things, but in that music, there is a healing THU balm. Mahler from somewhere brings a reunion of the THU individual with the world, a person with nature - the THU possibility that out of chaos there can be harmony and there THU can be love. Mahler can be the healer of us all." THU THU Producer: Jeremy Evans. Both highlighted the complex links between all THU living things and both gave stark warnings about the dangers THU of breaking those links. In the last essay of the week, THU Richard explores John Clare's role in bringing the beauty THU and fragility of the natural environment to wider public THU attention. And FRI around Blumine are two devilish dances by their compatriot FRI Franz Liszt - continuing the Proms celebrations of his FRI bicentenary this year. FRI FRI The concert opens with the First Mephisto Waltz (inspired by FRI the demon Mephistopheles who tempts Faust) and the first FRI half ends with Dejan Lazic as the virtuoso soloist in the FRI Totentanz - Dance of Death. FRI FRI It was in Budapest back in 1889 that Mahler - then Director FRI of the Royal Budapest Opera - conducted the premiere of his FRI First Symphony. At that point it had 5 movements, not the FRI four we're used to today: in the 1890s Mahler removed a slow FRI movement that he'd called Blumine - 'bouquet of flowers'. FRI FRI The Budapest Festival Orchestra was only founded in 1983, FRI but it's already universally recognised as one of the FRI world's great orchestras. FRI FRI 21:15 Sunday Feature b00vkpcp (Listen) FRI Walking with Freud FRI FRI 100 years on, composer David Matthews and psychoanalyst FRI Anthony Cantle retrace the walk that Mahler and Freud FRI famously took around the Dutch town of Leiden. FRI FRI On 26th August 1910, Gustav Mahler took a four hour walk FRI with Sigmund Freud. Mahler's marriage to Alma was in tatters FRI and, on the edge of a breakdown, he'd telegraphed Freud FRI asking for an urgent consultation. FRI Freud was on holiday with his family in Leiden, Holland and FRI asked Mahler to make the journey from Vienna to Leiden, FRI which he duly did. FRI FRI These two great Viennese Jews met for the only documented FRI time in their lives in Leiden. They walked around the city FRI for 4 hours and in that time, Mahler poured his heart out to FRI Freud. FRI FRI In this last summer of his life, Mahler had discovered that FRI his wife Alma was having an affair with the architect Walter FRI Gropius. This discovery seemed to totally unhinge Mahler. FRI There are descriptions of Alma taking trays of food to him FRI in his composing hut and finding him lying on the floor FRI weeping his heart out. And he wrote a letter telling of how FRI he stood at Alma's bedside night after night listening to FRI the sound of her breathing. FRI FRI And throughout this agonising period, Mahler wrote the FRI sketches for his 10th Symphony. The music is highly FRI autobiographical and much of its content reflects Mahler's FRI extreme anxiety about Alma's betrayal and the future of FRI their marriage, but it ends (in Mahler's draft) with a FRI passionate reaffirmation of love. FRI FRI The 10th Symphony remained unfinished at Mahler's death the FRI following year. David Matthews helped with the orchestration FRI of Deryck Cooke's performing version of the Symphony. FRI FRI In this programme, David Matthews and Anthony Cantle visit FRI Leiden 100 years on, to walk and talk together about this FRI tantalising episode which is close to both of their hearts. FRI Not only do they retell the story of the meeting and give it FRI a context, but as a composer and psychoanalyst, they also FRI bring their own professional and personal insights to the FRI story. FRI FRI David Matthews is a British composer of mostly orchestral, FRI chamber, choral, vocal, and piano works that have been FRI performed throughout the world; he is also active as a FRI scholar and writer. FRI FRI Anthony Cantle is a Fellow of the Institute of FRI Psycho-Analysis, London and a practising Psychoanalyst. He's FRI also a member of the UK Gustav Mahler Society.
