SAT SAT Pianist Stephen Hough, composer Huw Watkins and critic Bryce SAT Morrison join in with their insights into how the physiology SAT of great composers' hands had an impact on the music that SAT they wrote and the various challenges performers face as a SAT result. SAT SAT Includes music by Beethoven, Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, SAT Rachmaninov and Ligeti. SAT SAT Interesting Facts from the programme: SAT Beethoven's hands were heavy and muscular. SAT Weber had astonishingly long thumbs. SAT The extreme length of Rachmaninov's fingers has led some SAT experts to postulate that he had Marfan's syndrome, a SAT genetic condition. SAT Chopin's hands were so elastic and flexible that when he SAT extended them they prompted one of his pupils to remark that SAT they resembled "the opening mouth of a serpent, about to SAT swallow a rabbit whole." SAT Schumann permanently damaged his right hand in attempting to SAT build the strength and independence of his fingers on a SAT mechanical device. This ended his virtuoso piano career but SAT fortuitously led to him spending more time composing. SAT SAT Music: Music includes great pianist-composers, Beethoven, SAT Chopin, Liszt and Rachmaninov, works by tragically SAT frustrated pianists Schumann and Scriabin through Schoenberg SAT and Stravinsky to finish with the ultimate challenge for SAT contemporary pianists, the phenomenally difficult etudes of SAT non-pianist György Ligeti. SAT SAT Quotes from programme: SAT SAT "Stravinsky made no secret about writing at the piano. There SAT are so many chords, for example the first chord in the SAT Symphony of Psalms that has a tenth in both hands. You can SAT just imagine Stravinsky sitting down at the piano and his SAT fingers falling into this position. You can feel that SAT sometimes his hands are doing the composing, or at least SAT having a hand in it." SAT Huw Watkins, composer SAT SAT "The last three fingers of the right hand were his Divas" SAT Stephen Hough, pianist, on Chopin SAT SAT "Thomas Adés is blessed with enormous hands. He can stretch SAT an eleventh with many notes in between, which I can't quite SAT do. I can stretch a tenth and I know that it's difficult to SAT resist writing huge meaty chords and Tom certainly doesn't SAT in his piano writing!" SAT Huw Watkins SAT SAT "Scriabin was obsessed with his hands. When he wasn't SAT stretching them, he was washing them." SAT Iain Burnside SAT SAT "The patterns that Faure writes are quite unlike anyone SAT else's and they suggest a certain sort of hand. If you look SAT at, for example, the 3rd Valse Caprice, it looks in some SAT ways like other people's music and then you try and you SAT think: 'I'm going to have to start learning the piano all SAT over again!' It all sounds easy, which is again irritating - SAT no one has any idea that you're making an enormous effort." All's well SAT that ends well though, because by close of play Marguerite SAT has been borne up to heaven by a chorus of angels. Born into a military SUN family, he spent part of his childhood moving around the SUN Mediterranean, and has lived in Italy for three decades. He SUN began his career as a biology teacher before turning to SUN full-time writing, and two of his books, including the 1997 SUN novel 'Mendel's Dwarf', reveal an intense interest in SUN genetics. 'The Gospel of Judas' has a Middle Eastern SUN setting; 'Swimming to Ithaca' (2006) was inspired by his SUN childhood experiences in Cyprus during the EOKA period, and SUN 'The Fall' (2003) sprang from his own experiences as a rock SUN climber. 'The Glass Room', inspired by an iconic 1920s SUN house, returns to the central European setting of Brno, SUN where Mendel also did his ground-breaking research. SUN SUN Simon Mawer's music choices begin with a piece by Hildegard SUN of Bingen, an exemplar of medieval faith expressed through SUN music. They continue with an extract from Mozart's Mass in C SUN minor, K427, which represents faith turned into art suitable SUN for the concert hall. Beethoven's Piano Sonata in C minor, SUN Op.111 is for Simon Mawer the most remarkable piece of SUN abstract art, while George Antheil's Ballet mecanique stands SUN for one of the most significant artistic movements of the SUN 20th century - Dadaism. His remaining choices are connected SUN with place - works by Janacek and Vitezslava Kapralova, the SUN young Czech female composer who died tragically young in SUN 1940, remind him of Brno; Leo Ferre's song 'Paname' is about SUN the 'real' Paris that the tourists don't see; while Duke SUN Ellington's Mood Indigo, created in new Orleans, was SUN transported to Paris by Sidney Bechet. SUN SUN Constraint opens with Sibelius’ Ariel trapped in the tree SUN from which he is ultimately freed by Prospero in ‘The SUN Tempest’ and further prisoners are found throughout: Niobe SUN transformed to stone in Britten’s re-working of Ovid, Johnny SUN Cash’s famous ‘Folsom Prison Blues’, Stravinsky’s SUN Nightingale (from Hans Christian Anderson’s fable) and SUN Puccini’s ‘E Lucevan le Stella’ sung from within a prison SUN cell as Cavaradossi awaits execution. SUN SUN There is also music from composers who were themselves SUN imprisoned. Ethel Smyth was jailed for two months in 1912 SUN after smashing windows in suffragette protest and Oliver SUN Messiaen’s ‘Quatuor Pour la Fin du Temps’ was composed in a SUN prisoner of war camp for the violinist, cellist and SUN clarinetist Messaien met there. Rosa Luxemburg’s moving SUN meditation on her predicament and how she was able to SUN transcend the misery of her physical imprisonment in Breslau SUN was recorded in a diary entry from December 1917. SUN SUN Formal restrictions can inspire rather than stymie and SUN stimulate invention. Wordsworth’s poem here expresses the SUN sense of solace he finds in the sonnet’s sixteen lines, the SUN American poet Billy Collins rolls a Haiku round his mouth SUN like a single perfect grape, whilst Christian Bök’s giddily SUN Oulippian extravaganza delights in its single vowelled SUN confines. Dave Brubeck’s experiment in time signatures (here SUN 7/4 time) thrills with its difficulties overcome and John SUN Cage’s piece for prepared piano shows how stopping and SUN restriction the strings can winkle a myriad new sounds from SUN the instrument. SUN SUN Societal constraint is explored in the extract from Jane SUN Austen’s ‘Mansfield Park’ (matched here with Clementi’s SUN tight and demanding drawing room piece) and its leakage in SUN T. S. Eliot’s ‘Hysteria’ (accompanied here by Richard SUN Thomas’s ‘Laughing Aria’ for Lore Lixenberg whose extreme SUN vocal gymnastics require precision and control) and ‘I Get SUN Carried Away’ from ‘On the Town’. SUN SUN Alongside exploring familiar and, according to modern SUN scholarship, hopelessly over-simplified images of pederastic SUN relationships between older and younger men Richard travels SUN to the plane of Chaeronea where the famous Sacred Band of SUN Thebes fought and died. The Band, a military unit made up of SUN same sex lovers, were wiped out in combat against the SUN Macedonian forces of Philip and his son Alexander in 338BCE. SUN The Lion monument that overlooks the site of the slaughter SUN speaks of an attitude towards the Sacred Band at odds with SUN our modern feminised view of homosexuality. SUN SUN Richard then explores the impact of the Abrahamic SUN monotheistic religions beginning with the Mosaic laws of SUN Judaism. The fierce prohibition that 'though shalt not sleep SUN with a man as with a woman; it is an abomination' has echoed SUN down the centuries. Equally the Qur'an stories of Lot and SUN his rejection by the people of Sodom appears unequivocal. SUN But how did the early Islamic, Judaic and Christian SUN societies react to these texts and what are we to make of SUN the Hebrew and Arabic homoerotic poetry of the early SUN medieval period? SUN SUN Christianity seems to have been the most enthusiastic critic SUN of same sex relations but even here the judgements and SUN images are rarely as clear cut as the Biblical call for the SUN death sentence for transgressors. TUE TUE 20:10 Twenty Minutes b015bt2w (Listen) TUE Liszt: Piano Sonata in B minor TUE TUE Wagner was an enthusiast, but it apparently sent Brahms to TUE sleep. These days, Liszt's Piano Sonata in B minor is TUE regarded as one of the pinnacles of the piano repertoire, TUE difficult for listeners and monumentally challenging for the TUE pianist. There has been 150 years of disagreement about its TUE structure and its form - is it in one section? Three TUE sections? Four sections? What's it about? Some suggest it's TUE based on the Faust legend. Others say it represents the TUE story of the Garden of Eden. Or perhaps it's biographical. TUE It's one of the most discussed and analyzed pieces of music TUE ever written. This week on Discovering Music, Stephen TUE Johnson gets to grips with Liszt's masterpiece, before a TUE live performance by Nelson Goerner at Wigmore Hall. TUE TUE 22:45 The Essay b0151q5s (Listen) TUE Aspects of Grainger, Grainger and Folksong TUE TUE In the early years of the twentieth century composer Percy TUE Grainger travelled around Britain with a phonograph TUE recording rural folksingers. As a musical anthropologist TUE Grainger was looking for authentically rustic, timeless TUE melodic source material. Writer and Cheltenham Music TUE Festival director, Meurig Bowen explores Grainger's passion TUE for folksong, how he used it, how it influenced his music TUE and how it compared with other composers' incorporation of TUE folksongs. Might there have been something inherently TUE condescending and exploitative about folksong collecting or TUE was it a fear that, at a time of increasing TUE industrialisation and migration off the land that if these TUE tunes were not captured they could be lost forever? TUE TUE The programme includes a fascinating recording, made by TUE Grainger himself in 1906, of a folksong sung by a farm TUE bailiff followed by what the song subsequently became in one TUE of Graingers most poignant arrangements. TUE TUE Produced by Jeremy Hayes for Potton Hall Productions. It's an enjoyable FRI leisure activity, and a way of keeping fit. But Ian suspects FRI there's something more to it, and his reflections lead him FRI to speculate on the wider meaning of swimming, on the many FRI instances of significant swims and swimmers in film and FRI literature, and on some of the figures who have swum through FRI the pages of our literary canon.
