Plus SAT American pianist Jonathan Biss, and new books on Sibelius. SAT SAT Jonathan Biss – in Beethoven’s Shadow SAT SAT The young American pianist Jonathan Biss has just embarked SAT on a project to record all of Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas. SAT He tells Tom Service how he is in awe of this music, with SAT its insurmountable challenges and definitive nature which, SAT he says, can never be captured in a single performance or SAT recording. Biss has written about the joys and despairs of SAT playing Beethoven in an e-book called “Beethoven’s Shadow” SAT and prior to his London recital – which will be broadcast on SAT Radio 3 Live in Concert on Tuesday – he tells Tom why he SAT enjoys the apparently impossible, almost masochistic demands SAT of playing great music. SAT SAT Prokofiev - Man of the People? SAT SAT As Vladimir Jurowski and the London Philharmonic start their SAT festival Prokofiev: Man of the People? at the Southbank SAT Centre, Tom finds out from the Russian conductor why we need SAT to re-think the music of his compatriot. Prokofiev’s music SAT has suffered the taint of its associations with the Soviet SAT regime after he moved back to his homeland in 1933. However SAT Jurowski believes that Prokofiev had already embarked on a SAT radical simplicity in his musical style before he came back SAT to Russia, and that the Soviet period is really just an SAT extension of his core musical beliefs, and his desire to SAT communicate with as wide an audience as possible. SAT SAT Prokofiev’s Betrothal in A Monastery SAT SAT Prokofiev is not only being celebrated in London but in SAT Glasgow as well, as the latest collaboration between SAT Scottish Opera and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland is a SAT production of his rarely-heard opera Betrothal in a SAT Monastery, a fizzing comedy on Sheridan’s La Duenna, and the SAT last he would complete. Tom travels to Glasgow to see how SAT rehearsals are going and if Prokofiev’s Betrothal is a SAT perfect marriage between two of the country’s biggest SAT musical institutions. SAT SAT Leonard Slatkin – Orchestras on the edge SAT SAT Continuing our series of essays in which key cultural SAT thinkers express their views on the prospects for music in SAT 2012 Leonard Slatkin, music director of the Detroit SAT Symphony, talks about American orchestras on the edge of SAT survival. His own orchestra was on strike for 6 months last SAT year but has recently come back to renewed life, with SAT different kinds of concerts for new audiences and other SAT communities of the city than the orchestra reached in the SAT past. But overall, Slatkin says, the picture is grim in SAT terms of the financial support for the art-form in the US – SAT and yet he’s also hopeful that out of the crisis and the SAT recession, new ideas and new energy will be found. SAT SAT Sibelius re-considered SAT SAT Three new books have recently been published that reveal new SAT dimensions to Sibelius and Tom talks to all three authors SAT about the necessity of rethinking this Finnish musical SAT master. For Tomi Mäkela, Daniel Grimley and Phillip Ross SAT Bullock we need to get past the hoary old nationalist myths SAT of who Sibelius was: the idea that his music is essentially SAT Finnish or Nordic, that he wrote the music of the Finnish SAT landscape, that he was single-mindedly focused on his SAT symphonies. All of those are only partially true but in SAT addition we now hear about a Sibelius who loved Southern SAT climes, who was a gregarious, even hedonistic, personality SAT and how he was enmeshed in the culture and politics of his SAT time. SAT SAT 13:00 The Early Music Show b0195pg5 (Listen) SAT Mozart's Pilgrimage SAT SAT Lucie Skeaping presents highlights from a concert given by SAT The Cardinall's Musick at the 2011 Bath Mozartfest. SAT SAT Poulenc's Sextet is one of his most outgoing and cheerful SAT pieces. Beethoven's Quintet is an early work that gives the SAT horn-player a good work-out. Mozart's Adagio and Rondo was SAT written for a chamber group that included a novelty SAT instrument that is basically a set of tuned wine-glasses! Two sides are made from SAT Castor and Pollux, twin progeny of Jupiter, one divine one SAT mortal. The term 'brotherly love' might have been coined for SAT them. The other two sides, a pair of sisters: Telaïre and SAT Phoebe. SAT SAT Both Castor and Pollux love Telaïre; Phoebe loves Pollux but SAT the sentiment is not reciprocated. Telaïre loves Castor SAT better than Pollux and when Castor is killed in battle she SAT asks the surviving sibling to get Jupiter to bring him back SAT to life. Thinking that his brother's happiness is more SAT important than his own, Pollux sets about helping out. But SAT nothing's simple and terms and conditions apply: Jupiter has SAT decreed that Pollux must exchange his immortality for SAT Castor's mortality. And it gets worse. As Pollux enters the SAT Underworld to reclaim Castor, he not only has to endure the SAT all the horrors the nether regions have to throw at him, but SAT he also has to put up with Phoebe and her endless jealousy. SAT SAT All's well that ends well - if not for everybody. Jupiter SAT decides to make both brothers immortal and sends them up to SAT the heavens to become the Gemini (what else?) constellation. SAT Phoebe has killed herself; Telaïre is left on earth, bereft. SAT It's a happy ending, Greek myth-style. SAT SAT Although Rameau is one of the great dramatic composers the SAT baroque era and 'Castor and Pollux' is widely regarded as SAT his masterpiece, this is the first time any Rameau opera has SAT been staged at ENO. SAT SAT 21:00 Between the Ears b0195plv (Listen) SAT Cowdust Time SAT SAT An evocative sound portrait of Indian "cowdust time". SAT SAT Dust rises from the hooves of cattle returning to a village SAT at sunset. Smoke from open fires wreathes in ribbons across SAT the fields. As the evening shadows begin to lengthen, SAT people, animals and birds all return to their homes to rest. SAT SAT This time of day is known in India as "godhuli bela", or SAT "cowdust time". It is the sacred time when Lord Krishna SAT brought his own cattle safely home. In paintings, he is SAT often seen meeting his beloved Radha in the evening, as SAT peacocks call, bright green parakeets chatter loudly in the SAT neem trees, temple bells and muezzins call people of SAT different faiths to prayer. SAT SAT There are many devotional songs and poems devoted to this SAT twilight hour. It is seen throughout India as an auspicious SAT time for engagements, weddings, even business ventures. But SAT it's also the time when mothers call their children home, to SAT avoid evil spirits. And when those same children are told SAT not to whistle, for fear of inviting evil in. SAT SAT In this hypnotic sound tapestry - recorded in Gujarat, the SAT Kumaon hills and Madhya Pradesh - we hear cows and other SAT animals being brought back to their village, the loud SAT clamour of birds, the eerie noise of crickets. SAT SAT "It is that fantastic time of day," says writer and academic SAT Rajendrasingh Jadeja, "when the cowdust raised transforms SAT the scene from stark, sharp light to a fantasy world." SAT That fantasy world has been captured in art, music and SAT literature. Painter and art critic Amit Ambalal, poets SAT Jayant Parmar and Mahek Tankarvi, and musician Sugna Shah, SAT are among those who talk about the religious and cultural SAT significance of twilight. We also hear the poetry, prayers, SAT lullabies and ragas depicting this magical time "when the SAT earth does yoga". SAT SAT 21:30 Pre-Hear b0195plx (Listen) SAT Bent Sorensen's Shadowplay SAT SAT Three trios come together in a unique, spatially-separated SAT performance of Danish composer Bent Sorensen's Shadowplay. SAT Three works, each of five movements, are interwoven and SAT played in an unbroken thread from different parts of the SAT hall. It enchanted the audience at the 2011 Huddersfield SAT Contemporary Music Festival. Taking part are the Trio SAT Aristos, the Scenatet Trio and the Cikada Trio. SAT SAT Producer Andrew Kurowski. THU THU 20:10 Twenty Minutes b0198krt (Listen) THU Shostakovich's Symphony No 7 THU THU Typically, listeners cry when they hear Shostakovich's THU Seventh Symphony. It was written during World War Two and THU dedicated to Leningrad, the city besieged by the Germans for THU almost three years, with vast destruction and loss of life THU in the hundreds of thousands. THU THU Since its first performance, the symphony has been seen as a THU symbol of resistance against the Nazis, but more recently, THU as the political climate in Russia has made it easier for THU people to speak up, accounts have suggested that THU Shostakovich started work on the piece before the beginning THU of the siege, and that therefore, it's better viewed as a THU depiction of brutality in general, and perhaps specifically THU the purges of Stalin's regime. THU THU Shostakovich himself said, "even before the war, there THU probably wasn't a single family who hadn't lost someone, a THU father, a brother, or if not a relative, then a close THU friend. Everyone had someone to cry over, but you had to cry THU silently, under the blanket, so no one would see. Everyone THU feared everyone else, and the sorrow oppressed and THU suffocated us. It suffocated me, too. I had to write about THU it, I felt it was my responsibility, my duty. I had to write THU a requiem for all those who died, who had suffered. I had to THU describe the horrible extermination machine and express THU protest against it." THU THU Stephen Johnson explores the weighty and deeply emotional THU symbolism of the Leningrad Symphony.
