Plus conductor Daniele Gatti, and how the SAT 19th-century French decadent movement shaped the music of SAT Ravel. SAT The Italian conductor Daniele Gatti is currently Music SAT Director of the French National Orchestra and the Zurich SAT Opera. In recent years he has been in charge of the Royal SAT Philharmonic Orchestra, the Santa Cecilia Orchestra in Rome SAT and the Teatro Communale in Bologna. He is currently at SAT Covent Garden for a new production of Verdi’s Falstaff, and SAT as he tells Tom Service, it’s a piece he’d like to be buried SAT with. He talks about the freedoms and limitations of his SAT job as a conductor, how being a composer himself gives him SAT licence to interpret the music he loves, and why Verdi’s SAT music is so central to his musical life. SAT SAT The Canadian director Robert Carsen talks to Tom about his SAT new production of Verdi’s Falstaff for The Royal Opera. SAT Carsen has decided to set the piece in 1950’s Britain, SAT instead of Elizabethan times. He feels there are parallels SAT in terms of the class struggle with the rise of the middle SAT classes represented in the opera by the very rich Ford, and SAT the twilight of the aristocracy represented by Sir John SAT Falstaff who’s clinging to his aristocratic roots. For SAT Carsen it’s the vitality and variety of Verdi’s astonishing SAT music that inspires him, the way the piece is propelled from SAT the joyous firework of its very first notes to that SAT extraordinary fugue at the end. SAT SAT We think of Ravel as a composer of perfect miniatures who SAT was concerned with the structure of his pieces above all SAT else. However, in his new book Ravel the Decadent, Michael SAT J. Puri sets out to show that in late nineteenth century SAT France to be decadent as an artist was to be part of an SAT avant-garde pushing the boundaries of artistic expression. SAT Puri tells Tom why we should listen to Ravel’s music in a SAT new way and pianist Louise Lortie and cultural historian SAT Patrick McGuiness explain why this “decadence” helps them SAT understand the music. SAT SAT As a weekend celebrating the music of George Benjamin gets SAT under way at London’s Southbank Centre, Tom talks to the SAT composer about his career. Benjamin’s new opera Written on SAT Skin is to be premiered in Aix en Provence this July, with SAT subsequent productions in seven other European cities SAT including London. The story is a medieval love-triangle with SAT a libretto by Martin Crimp, with whom Benjamin collaborated SAT on his first opera, Into the Little Hill. He tells Tom why SAT Written on Skin is the culmination of a lifelong musical SAT dream and how he had to find a new musical language to tell SAT this passionate drama. Scarcely a single British composer of note for MON centuries failed to be associated with it. Byrd, Purcell, MON Handel, Gibbons, Locke, even Sir Arthur Sullivan of G&S fame MON all gave their best to adorn state occasions and royal MON worship, right up to the recent wedding of William and Kate. MON MON This week, Donald Macleod takes five snapshots of the MON Chapel's itinerant musicians, following their fortunes as MON they navigate a perilous route from monarch to monarch. MON Often their careers prosper, with grand masques for Queen MON Elizabeth I and battlefield triumphs under Henry V. But MON there are periods of near collapse too, most notably the MON years of the Civil War which almost finished the Chapel for MON good. And we hear the written testimonies of many who gave MON their best years to the choir, most of them thankful for the MON education it gave them but also some with dark memories of MON bullying amongst the ranks. MON MON We begin in 1520, and a royal 'G2' long before the G10 was MON ever invented. Henry VIII is in France for the signing of a MON royal treaty. No expense is spared as a 'porta-palace' is MON constructed complete with a fountain gushing with claret. MON It's an occasion when his chapel musicians must show what MON they are made of. WED WED In this third essay Professor Eldred Jones explains that WED Shakespeare took from Africa as much as Africa has taken WED from him. WED WED These essays explore Shakespeare's place on the global WED stage; with writers and scholars from around the world WED explaining his importance within their own culture. There WED are references to Hamlet and Othello in Iranian literature WED for example - as well as in African and Chinese works. WED Othello was first translated into Persian 170 years ago by a WED Persian prince because the themes of jealousy and honour WED struck a chord with the Iranian psyche.
