Tom Service travels to Versailles SAT to discover more about its Royal Opera House, re-opened in SAT September 2009 after an extensive restoration programme. SAT Although Lully wrote operas in the 17th century for SAT performance at Versailles for King Louis XIV, it wasn’t SAT until the reign of Louis XV that a purpose-built opera house SAT was established there. In fact it was only used nineteen SAT times in nineteen years before the revolution - for state SAT events and spectacles as much as opera. Since then it has SAT been used for a while as the French Senate and it was only SAT in 2009 that it was restored to its original glory. It now SAT plays host to some of the world’s leading exponents of SAT baroque music. Tom Service travels to Versailles and meets SAT Christophe Rousset as he prepares to conduct Handel’s SAT Alcina in the theatre, the musical historian Benoit SAT Dratwicki, who explains Versailles’ central position in SAT the history of French Baroque music and Laurent Brunner the SAT Directeur des Spectacles at the opera house. SAT SAT Hugh Macdonald's new book Music in 1853 - The Biography of a SAT Year, takes a novel approach to telling the story of 19th SAT century music, cutting a cross-section through time rather SAT than telling the narrative of a single life. In that year SAT Brahms emerged from obscurity to celebrity, Schumann ceased SAT to be an active composer and both Berlioz and Wagner became SAT active again after long silences. Brahms met Berlioz and SAT Liszt as well as Schumann and the violinist Joachim was SAT close to them all. Wagner was on everybody’s mind. Tom SAT talks to the author and reviews the book with writer and SAT lecturer Roderick Swanston and Laura Tunbridge, Senior SAT Lecturer in Music at Manchester University. SAT SAT The new Oxford History of Western Music – College Edition, SAT is a distillation of Richard Taruskin’s 6 volume, SAT 4000-page Oxford History of Western Music. It's a book that SAT Christopher Gibbs has designed for university students as a SAT starting point for classwork, but it's also an ideal guide SAT to where thinking about the sweep of western music is at the SAT moment. Tom talks to Christopher Gibbs about his priorities SAT in condensing the original work and finds out what Roderick SAT Swanston and Nicholas Kenyon, the former Director of the BBC SAT Proms and now Managing Director of the Barbican Centre, SAT think of it. SAT SAT 13:00 The Early Music Show b00yy926 (Listen) SAT King Joao IV of Portugal SAT SAT Catherine Bott talks to Owen Rees about the musical legacy SAT of King Joao IV of Portugal and the so-called Golden Age of SAT Portuguese polyphony. In 1578, the young king of Portugal, SAT Sebastian led an ill-considered crusade against the Moors of SAT Morocco. He was routed at the battle of Alcazar-Quivir and SAT disappeared without trace, leaving his succession and the SAT fate of his nation on a knife-edge. Of the six claimants to SAT the Portuguese monarchy, the most powerful was Philip II of SAT Spain, whose invading army conquered the country in 1581. SAT Neither Philip nor his two successors acknowledged SAT Portugal's cultural or ethnic independence and treated her SAT as nothing more than a province of Spain. Portugal's SAT considerable foreign revenue enriched the Spanish treasury, SAT while her dominance in trade and sea power was successfully SAT challenged by the English and the Dutch, thus loosening her SAT grip on her colonies in Africa, Asia and South America. This SAT period of external domination and subsequent economic SAT decline lasted for nearly 60 years until the Portuguese SAT nobility reached the end of its tether and led a revolt SAT against their oppressors in 1640, as a result of which, the SAT Duke of Braganza was declared the new and rightful king of SAT Portugal and the Algarves. One of King Joao IV's first SAT actions was to lead his countrymen in a protracted war of SAT restoration against the Spanish, whose armies were finally SAT driven out of Portuguese lands after four more years of SAT fierce fighting. Joao o Restaurador - John the Restorer - SAT was not just a successful troop-leader, though. He was also SAT a generous supporter of the arts, and a considerably SAT talented musician and composer himself. And, by the time of SAT his death in 1656 he had amassed the biggest music library SAT in the world. "My house has started SAT talking to me," she says. "It produces haunting sounds like SAT far-off women wailing." SAT SAT This programme, combining interviews with music and the SAT sounds of the sea, the wind, the land, the dying houses, SAT explores how people cope with natural calamity: with anger, SAT stoicism, distress, and art. SAT SAT One winter, Ron and Judith Backhouse watched as first their SAT fence, then their shed, and finally three trees slipped over SAT the cliff at the bottom of their garden on a private estate SAT above Scarborough. "The crack is running up towards our next SAT door neighbour's house," says Ron. "It's maybe five or ten SAT metres away from his bungalow now and we're connected to SAT him. SAT SAT Artist Kane Cunningham bought a condemned bungalow on the SAT same estate so that he could live in it, use it as an SAT artistic installation and document its demise. Since he SAT moved in, the neighbouring three houses have been demolished SAT for safety reasons, and he reckons his is next. Written in the last months of TUE his short life, Schubert's E flat Mass is as innovatory and TUE daring as his more famous late symphonic and chamber TUE utterances. Essentially symphonic in nature, it is by turns TUE visionary and otherworldly with daring harmonic experiments TUE and awe inspiring orchestral colourings. TUE The Basilica of Saint Denis, the final resting place of TUE French kings from the seventh century to 1789, and the TUE spiritual birthplace of Gothic architecture is the TUE atmospheric setting for an all too rare performance of TUE Schubert's masterpiece. And, as the light begins to fade, TUE the stained glass windows in this magnificent "royal TUE necropolis of France" will surely add an eerie glow to TUE Schoenberg's Verklarte Nacht, a work inspired by a poem of TUE Richard Dehmel which describes a man and a woman walking TUE through a dark forest on a moonlit night: the woman shares a TUE dark secret with her new lover: she bears the child of TUE another man. TUE TUE Schubert Mass no.6 in E flat D. 950 TUE Genia Kühmeier (soprano), Christine Rice (mezzo-soprano), TUE Pavol Breslik (tenor) Joshua Ellicott (tenor), Luca Pisaroni TUE (bass-baritone), TUE Choir of Radio France TUE Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France TUE Daniel Harding (conductor) TUE TUE At approx 8.20 interval TUE Martin Handley introduces recordings of the famous 1841 TUE Cavaille-Coll organ at the Basilica of Saint-Denis, an TUE instrument which formed the blueprint for a whole school of TUE organ building and compostion in France. And there will also TUE be the chance to hear a rare mid nineteenth century pedal TUE piano, newly restored and exhibited, in the impressive TUE instrument museum of the Cite de la Musique a couple of TUE kilometers from Saint-Denis on the northern outskirts of TUE Paris. TUE TUE Approx 8.45pm TUE TUE Schoenberg Verklarte Nacht TUE Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France TUE Daniel Harding (conductor) TUE TUE Approx 9.20 TUE TUE A chance to hear two of the important keyboard instruments TUE on display in the Musee de la Musique, Paris. The rare Erard TUE pedal piano of 1853 is heard this time in the Prelude and TUE Fugue on BACH by Liszt, an early advocate for these pedal TUE pianos. And Christophe Rousset plays a harpsichord built in TUE 1652 by Ioannes Couchet, heir to the legendary Ruckers TUE dynasty of Antwerp and expanded and redecorated in Paris at TUE the beginning of the seventeenth century. This ornate TUE instrument, like the Basilica de Saint-Denis, is officially TUE classified as a National Treasure by the French State. Both TUE recordings were made as part of the Cite de la Musique's TUE on-going project to document the instruments on display at TUE the museum. THU THU Wexford Festival Opera is renowned for staging rarely THU performed repertoire, and Donizetti is one of the most THU frequently performed composers at Wexford. In 1952 the THU festival produced the little-known Donizetti opera L'Elisir THU D'Amore! Gianni di Parigi, written in 1831, is still one of THU his least-known works. It is the fifteenth Donizetti opera THU to be presented at Wexford in its 61 years. THU THU It's a good idea to know the woman you're going to marry - THU and it's a clever woman who sees what the man's getting up THU to! The story of Gianni di Parigi derives from a popular THU 15th-century chivalric story about the French heir to the THU throne, the Dauphin. Although he is betrothed to the THU Princess of Navarre, they have never met. He wants to see THU for himself if she is really as good and beautiful as he has THU been told. He disguises himself as a wealthy burgher and THU insists on staying at the inn which the princess has THU reserved for herself and her entourage on their journey to THU Paris for her marriage. He bribes the innkeeper, commandeers THU the food and drink and asks the princess to dine with him. THU She sees through the plot and is well aware of his true THU identity, but she admires his enterprise and they fall in THU love. THU THU "One day in 2006," recalls Jonathan Harvey, "I got a call THU from the manager of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, THU Pamela Rosenberg. Would I write a 90-minute whole-evening THU work for them with choir?... It was an idea of the most THU famous theologian in the world, she went on. The theologian THU was Hans Küng, who initiated and in 1995 became president THU of the Global Ethic Foundation (Stiftung Weltethos), which THU seeks to foster peace between the religions on the basis of THU common ethical principles and values. "These values", says THU Küng, "can be found in all the great religious and THU philosophical traditions of humankind. They need not be THU invented anew, but people need to be made aware of them THU again; they must be lived out and handed on." THU THU Harvey was entrusted with setting the visionary libretto for THU a number of reasons. The British composer was ideally suited THU to an ambitious project of this nature because he has always THU rejected the l'art pour l'art of music that is THU mechanistically constructed: "I think music has an important THU role to play in society because, in my opinion, it is the THU most spiritual of all the arts." THU THU In composing Weltethos to Küng's libretto, Harvey has THU produced a choral-orchestral work of vast dimensions for THU mixed chorus, children's chorus and organ, whose six THU movements are dedicated to different religious or THU philosophical teachings: Confucianism as well as the five THU great world religions of Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, THU Christianity and Islam.
