Pianists Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Noriko SAT Kawai and Rolf Hind talk about performing contemporary piano SAT music and what the future may hold for the piano repertoire. SAT SAT Handel’s Julius Caesar at ENO SAT English National Opera’s new production of Handel’s Julius SAT Caesar opened at the London Coliseum this week, starring the SAT counter-tenor Lawrence Zazzo in the title role and soprano SAT Anna Christy as Cleopatra. Tom Service meets the conductor SAT Christian Curnyn and director & choreographer Michael SAT Keegan-Dolan (of Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre), who says “as SAT a choreographer or director one is vulnerable to making the SAT mistake of adding too many extra elements to what Handel has SAT given us, when in fact all that is necessary is to excavate SAT thoroughly what is already there and simply allow its SAT implicit power to emerge.” To discuss whether he has SAT succeeded in this, Tom is joined in the studio by writer and SAT broadcaster Edward Seckerson and dance critic Judith SAT Mackrell. SAT SAT The Contemporary Piano SAT The post-war piano has gone places that the instrument's SAT 18th century Florentine inventors could never have SAT predicted. The sounds that composers from Messiaen to SAT Lachenmann, Stockhausen to Ligeti have conjured from the SAT instrument and the demands they have placed on their SAT performers, belong to a new stratosphere of poetic and SAT emotional expression and technical sophistication. As part SAT of BBC Radio 3’s Piano Season Tom talks to the pianists SAT Pierre Laurent-Aimard, Noriko Kawai and Rolf Hind about what SAT it's like to work with today's composers to create new SAT sound-worlds from the piano (Hind is also a composer and SAT plays his own compositions) and the future of the piano SAT repertoire heading on through the 21st century. SAT SAT A Natural History of the Piano SAT In his new book The Natural History of the Piano, the SAT pianist, critic and teacher Stuart Isacoff unfolds the SAT on-going history and evolution of the piano and all its SAT myriad wonders: how its very sound provides the basis for SAT emotional expression and individual style, and why it has so SAT powerfully entertained generation upon generation of SAT listeners. He gives Tom a whistle-stop tour of the piano and SAT its repertoire “from Mozart to Modern Jazz and everything SAT in-between” and muses on the whether the 21st century will SAT be another golden age of pianism and pianists around the SAT globe. These SAT Debussy composed towards the end of his life in 1915 while SAT he worked on a new edition of Chopin's piano works. And to SAT highlight Debussy's feel for the Orient, Noriko Ogawa places SAT Rain Tree Sketch II by Japanese Toru Takemitsu at the start SAT of her recital. The child of a SUN French mother and English father, she was brought up and SUN still divides her time between the two countries. She SUN studied English at Oxford University, worked for the British SUN Council, and then became a writer. She is currently Emeritus SUN Professor of Creative Writing at the University of East SUN Anglia. SUN SUN She is the author of twelve highly acclaimed novels, SUN including 'Daughters of the House' (1992), which was SUN shortlisted for the Booker Prize and won the W H Smith SUN Literary Award; 'Flesh and Blood' (1994), 'The Looking SUN Glass' (2000), 'Reader, I Married Him' (2005), and her SUN latest novel, 'Ignorance' (2012), a war-time novel set in SUN France. She has also published a memoir, 'Paper Houses', SUN dealing with the themes that inform her novels - love, SUN feminist ideals and the legacy of her Catholic upbringing; SUN and a collection of short stories of sex and love, entitled SUN 'Mud' (2010). SUN SUN Music has always played an important part in Michele SUN Roberts's life, and her choices begin with Bach's Magnificat SUN and continue with an aria from Handel's cantata 'Donna, che SUN in ciel di tanta luce splendi', in praise of the Virgin SUN Mary. Michele says she wanted to be a nun as a teenager, and SUN became fascinated by female mystics and saints, including SUN Hildegard of Bingen. She loves Kathleen Ferrier's voice, SUN singing Handel's 'O Thou that tellest good tidings to Zion', SUN which she finds very comforting. She also appreciates the SUN voices of Alfred Deller, Jacques Brel and Bob Dylan, as well SUN as an Italian women partisans' song, Bella Ciao, which SUN appeals to her republican sympathies, and the Portuguese SUN fado singer Mariza. Read by Sheila SUN Hancock and Ellie Kendrick. SUN SUN The figure of the nun has long exerted a powerful influence SUN on the imagination. SUN SUN From the chaste and pious figure of St Teresa of Avila to SUN the tragic and imprisoned nuns of Puccini's Suor Angelica SUN and Diderot's The Nun. From the courageous martyrs of SUN Poulenc's Dialogues des Carmelites to the sexually SUN transgressive and possessed nuns of the convent at Loudun. SUN SUN There's the sad nun, disappointed in love, as portrayed by SUN Alexander Pope in Eloisa to Abelard. The Courtesan who finds SUN redemption in Massenet's Thais. The ghostly terrifying SUN figure of the nun in Matthew Lewis' The Monk. And of course SUN nuns have been the source of much comedy, such as Chaucer's SUN social climbing Prioress, or the men dressed as nuns in SUN Rossini's Comte Ory. SUN SUN For centuries entering a convent was one of the few ways SUN women could gain independence and express themselves in SUN music and poetry. Saint Hildegard of Bingen, who founded two SUN monasteries in the 12th Century, is one of the most SUN significant early composers of Western music, and the 17th SUN Century Italian nun Caterina Assandra also achieved SUN recognition and fame for her work. Her beautiful motet Duo SUN Seraphim has been one of my favourite discoveries in making SUN this programme. SUN SUN Producer: Timothy Prosser. SUN SUN India has aspirations to become a new global superpower. The SUN middle class is over 300 million strong and growing fast. SUN But India still operates as a deeply structured traditional SUN society, with rigid religious codes and a caste system SUN underpinning all aspects of life, especially in rural areas. SUN SUN Jatinder Verma considers the impact of the ascetic on Indian SUN mainstream life and politics and asks whether it can survive SUN the profound economic transformation that is taking place in SUN India at present. SUN SUN According to traditional scriptures, the ideal life in India SUN should be lived in defined stages. Between the ages of 12-25 SUN you are a student, between 25-50 you should be a SUN householder, from 50-75 you take the role of an elder, and SUN from 75 you are encouraged to become an ascetic - totally SUN renouncing the world and its possessions to live beyond the SUN normal rules of society.
