Plus SAT conductor William Christie and a celebration of 40 years of SAT the Royal Northern College of Music. SAT SAT Jonathan Harvey SAT Jonathan Harvey died earlier this week, at the age of 73, SAT after suffering a long and terminal illness of the nervous SAT system. SAT SAT It was an invitation by Pierre Boulez to work at IRCAM in SAT the early 1980’s that shaped and characterised Harvey’s SAT music and career – fusing electronics with acoustic SAT instruments as he explored new sound worlds. This can be SAT heard in pieces like the orchestral triptych - Body Mandala SAT (2006), …towards a pure land (2005) & Speakings (2008) – SAT which he composed as the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra SAT Composer in Association, or his 2006 opera Wagner Dream. SAT Another huge influence on Harvey’s compositions was SAT Buddhism, which he practised, and eastern spiritual SAT philosophies. SAT SAT Jonathan Harvey’s life and his music are remembered and SAT celebrated on Music Matters this week by composer Julian SAT Anderson, conductor Martyn Brabbins - who conducted the SAT premiere of Harvey's last opera, Wagner Dream, and historian SAT and friend of Harvey's, Jonathan Cross. SAT SAT William Christie SAT Franco-American conductor and harpsichordist William SAT Christie founded the acclaimed early music group Les Arts SAT Florissants in 1979, naming them after a short opera by SAT Marc-Antoine Charpentier. Next week they are in London to SAT perform Handel’s oratorio Belshazzar with a cast including SAT Allan Clayton and Rosemary Joshua. Written in the summer of SAT 1744 at the peak of Handel’s creative life, the composer SAT professed ‘it engages me warmly…and has given me opportunity SAT to express some very particular ideas’. SAT SAT William Christie talks to Tom Service about his approach to SAT Handel, the oratorio as a dramatic work, and the current SAT perception of the early music movement. SAT SAT The Royal Northern College of Music SAT This year sees the 40th anniversary of The Royal Northern SAT College of Music. Formed in 1972 when the Royal Manchester SAT College (founded by Sir Charles Hallé) merged with the SAT Northern School of Music, it moved to its purpose-built home SAT on Manchester’s Oxford Road in 1973. Throughout the 2012/13 SAT season the college is celebrating its 40th birthday with a SAT variety of different projects including RNCM in the City - SAT 40 concerts in 40 different venues from the grand Manchester SAT Town Hall to Salford Lads club. Andy Martin tells how writer Stendahl, later to SUN be the renowned author of the French classic The Red and the SUN Black, followed Napoleon across Europe to Moscow in 1812 and SUN changed fiction in the process. Part of Radio 3's series of SUN programmes on Napoleon, marking his huge influence on SUN nineteenth century European culture. SUN SUN Two hundred years ago the French novelist, at that time a SUN big fan of Napoleon, became a kind of catering manager to SUN the emperor and journeyed from France to Russia attempting SUN to feed some of the thousands of troops who marched on SUN Moscow. On the way he got into all sorts of scrapes, SUN glimpsed his hero, narrowly avoided being burned as cities SUN and towns were scorched around about, and saw very little SUN fighting. He got to Moscow and pretty much turned around and SUN headed home. But getting out was harder still than getting SUN in. Death and hunger was everywhere, even cannibalism, the SUN two combined. At one point he wrote about how he had gone SUN down on his knees at the sight of a potato. Later when he SUN came to write one of his masterpiece novels, The SUN Charterhouse of Parma, the tragi-comic experiences of the SUN campaign and the arbitrariness of battle (how do you know if SUN you are in a battle, what would a realistic description of SUN being under fire actually be?) transformed his writing about SUN Waterloo and ushered in a new realism into the nineteenth SUN century novel. SUN SUN Andy Martin, French scholar and author of Napoleon the SUN Novelist travels part way with Stendhal from Paris to SUN Vilnius and back again exploring how a romantic young man SUN was transformed into a genius clear-eyed novelist thanks to SUN some potatoes. His political rival, SUN the sober and focused Robespierre, is in the ascendant, and SUN - with his efficient sidekick St Just - has power now over SUN Danton's fate. But can Danton care enough to fight the SUN terror that he himself set in motion? SUN SUN Georg Buchner died in 1837 at the age of 23, by which time SUN he had had only one play published, and none produced. MON MON The viol player Marin Marais's cache of admirers has grown MON in numbers since Gérard Depardieu appeared in a film based MON loosely on the musician's life. Prior to cinematic fame, MON according to Jordi Savall, who created the film's award MON winning soundtrack, Marais's legacy was valued in the main MON by fellow violists, musicians and musicologists. MON MON Marais was the most brilliant bass violist of his MON generation. According to the eighteenth century chronicler, MON Evrard Titon du Tillet, after a mere six months Marais's MON virtuosity had outstripped his teacher's, a famous exponent MON of the instrument, Monsieur de Saint-Colombe. If we're to MON believe Tillet, while his teacher felt he had nothing more MON to show him, such was his passion to learn that Marais then MON hid underneath the secluded hut where his reclusive teacher MON would play, to listen, learn and further his own technique. MON MON Marais's brilliance as a violist attracted the attention of MON Lully, the all-powerful Superintendant of the King's Music. MON Thereafter Lully took Marais under his wing, giving him a MON job in 1675 playing viol in the Opera orchestra; an MON appearance as the character "Dream playing a viol" in MON Lully's "Atys" brought Marais to the notice of Louis XIV. MON Officially he became "viol player in the Royal Chamber" on MON 1st August 1679. Figures vary wildly but Marais' legacy MON numbers something in the region of 500-700 pieces for the MON viol, published in five books, offering something for every MON occasion and standard of player. While some demand technical MON skill and advanced standards of musicianship, others were MON written with the less proficient performer in mind. His MON fertile and inventive imagination also turned to the MON publication of a landmark series of Trios and stage works. MON MON This pairing brings Marais together with Michel-Richard MON Delalande, a composer who's probably best known through his MON contribution to church music, in particular the "grands MON motets" that formed an important part of royal services at MON Versailles. The 77 authenticated grand motets Delalande MON produced and then reworked over almost fifty years are MON widely regarded as reaching the high point of a genre that MON had been passed on by Lully and Henry Du Mont, the grand MON motet's creator. However Delalande also wrote ballets, MON entertainments and divertissements for the royal palaces and MON more famously suites of instrumental music for the King to MON enjoy during his meals. MON MON Born a year after Marais, in 1657, Michel-Richard Delalande MON became the most pre-eminent composer at the court of Louis MON XIV. His was something of a rags to riches story. Rising MON from humble beginnings, after forty-three years of royal MON service, he was one of the few musicians who could afford MON his own coach, a three storey house in Paris, a country MON house, and an apartment near the Chateau at Versailles as MON well as a substantial collection of art and silver. MON The popularity of Delalande's music extended far beyond MON those privileged enough to be able to attend the King's MON Mass. After 1725 and with the creation of Concert Spirituel MON concerts in Paris they were regularly performed for a wider MON public. MON MON The story begins and indeed ends for these composers in MON Paris. The son of a shoe-maker, in 1667 at the age of ten, MON through the auspices of a well placed uncle, Marais is MON admitted to the prestigious royal church of MON Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois choir school. There his path MON converges for the first time with Delalande, the son of a MON Parisian tailor. For both of them the musical training they MON receive there offers both education and social advancement. MON MON This is the first of five essays about Britain's tree MON varieties and their history as part of the landscape - a MON subject which has taken on a new urgency with the MON announcement that Ash Dieback disease has entered the MON country with a potentially devastating effect. Professor MON Stafford's other essays examine the story of the Ash itself, MON Oak, Willow and Sycamore. MON MON The Fortingall Yew in Perthshire, Europe's oldest tree at MON over 3,000 years old, was already a veteran when the Romans MON arrived. Often ancient yews predate the churchyards where MON they stand, because they marked ancient, sacred sites on MON which the relatively new religion could be built. Though MON often planted in churchyards because their leaves might be MON toxic to grazing livestock, the tree itself has long MON associations with death and immortality. The astonishing MON longevity of the yew and its evergreen branches suggests MON comforting thoughts of everlasting life to mourners in MON churchyards, while the dark, dense boughs offer privacy and MON stillness. Although the fruit is sweet and relished by MON birds, the seed inside is highly poisonous to humans, yet MON there is great hope that taxol, a compound found in the MON yew's reddish bark, can be developed into a powerful MON cancer-fighting drug. His real passion for TUE nineteenth-century chamber music is evident in the first TUE half, with the comparatively rarely-heard Schubert Rondo in TUE B minor, and the Violin Sonata that Richard Strauss composed TUE around 1888, after he had fallen in love with his future TUE wife Pauline de Ahna. Prokofiev's Second Violin Sonata is a TUE wartime piece, composed in 1942 for flute, and rearranged TUE for violin the following year - betraying nothing of the TUE events of the time, it is lyrical, elegant and classical. His gift for TUE playing the violin was exceptional and he made his debut on TUE stage at Carnegie Hall at the age of 14. To his admirers he TUE was one of the twentieth century's greatest violinists, TUE ranking alongside Heifetz, Oistrakh and Menuhin. TUE TUE But Michael Rabin's life was marked by isolation and at TUE times anxiety and during the early 1960s this lead to him TUE cancelling concerts. His career was undergoing a revival by TUE the late 1960s but then, in 1972, at the age of just 35, TUE Rabin died from a head injury sustained in a fall at his New TUE York apartment. TUE TUE In this Essay she tackles the tree which has suddenly hit TUE the headliness. The Ash has been threatened by the arrival TUE in Britain of dieback disease. But the Ash has survived TUE since the birth of humanity and met mortal threats before. TUE Despite many different near fatal epidemics over the TUE centuries, delicate ash trees have survived for millennia. TUE TUE Our history with the ash is long. The ash exudes a sugary TUE substance that was fermented to create the Norse Mead of TUE Inspiration. In Norse mythology, the World Tree Yggdrasil is TUE commonly held to be an ash tree, and the first man, Ask, was TUE formed from an ash tree. Elsewhere in Europe, snakes were TUE said to be repelled by ash leaves, shadows from an ash tree TUE would damage crops, ash was thought to cure warts or rickets TUE and in Sussex the ash was known as the Widow Maker because TUE the large boughs would often drop without warning. TUE TUE Ash is musical, often used as material for guitar bodies and TUE drum shells.Charmingly, ash is still used for suspension in TUE Morgan cars. But how will we start to replace this flexible, TUE delicate yet persistent wood and protect the timber from TUE which humanity was formed, while it fights off yet another TUE threat to its own existence? WED WED In this edition, the Oak. Sturdy, stalwart, stubborn, the WED oak is a symbol of enduring strength, inspiring poets, WED composers and writers for millennia. Civilisations have been WED built from oak, as its hard wood has been felled for houses, WED halls and cities, its timber turned into trading ships and WED navies. Other woods are as strong, but few are as WED long-lasting as oak. WED WED Sacred to the Celts and the Ancient Greeks, the Oak tree is WED a mainstay of British culture, present in place-names and WED national songs - Heart of Oak, Rule Britannia; yet it is in WED fact the national tree of dozens of countries. The WED resistant, native oak also figures largely in the WED distinctive cultures of Ireland, Scotland and Wales, WED embodying ideas of natural connection and growth. Ancient WED oaks, vast enough to hide a secret room within, have been WED religious meeting places, rallying points, refuges for kings WED and outlaws, party venues for friends and families. Although WED by no means the longest lived of ours trees, its slow growth WED is the ever-present home to ecosystems of insects, fungi, WED birds and animals and was once the most common European WED tree. WED WED The huge demand for oak wood in the furniture and food WED industries threatens oak trees worldwide through poaching, WED according to some. THU THU In many ways Britain's youth is in crisis, trapped by rising THU debt and unemployment. And yet youth culture has never been THU more influential or all-pervasive. THU THU Lindsay Johns argues that we need to stop pandering to young THU people, and that all too often we tell them only what they THU want to hear. THU THU In this edition, she explores the Willow. THU THU A wood of the wetlands, willows seem almost as fluid as the THU rivers they fringe. They are trees of mobility, change, THU displacement. Shakespeare gave their sad music to his tragic THU heroines, with Ophelia sinking into the brook by the willow THU and Desdemona singing her willow song on the last night of THU her life. For many, the willow conjures up dreams of THU childhood, coloured by Kenneth Grahame's famous book Wind in THU the Willows and later children's writers. In Harry Potter, THU the Whomping Willow is a tree with attitude that lives on THU the Hogwarts grounds; we share J K Rowling's thinking of its THU modernity. But the willow also has traditional associations THU with dreams and divination, and wands made from willow are THU linked to the moon. Their power has also been harnessed very THU differently by sportsmen wielding cricket bats or by doctors THU prescribing pain relief derived from the willow's salicylic THU acid, which gave the world aspirin. The quick-growing, THU ever-generous willow has always offered pliable twigs for THU basket-weaving, wicker-work, cradle-making, thatching or THU fencing, and once cut, the branches will turn into new THU trees. The willow is the ultimate entrepreneur embracing THU change. THU THU Willows now have the potential to be green heroes, a saviour THU of the wood biofuels movement - as they are so fast growing, THU they can be harvested very frequently, and so are a tree of THU choice for wood fuels. There are willow-fuelled power THU stations being planned. FRI FRI This edition is dedicated to the sycamore. FRI FRI Sycamore seeds have their own propellers, sending them far FRI and wide on the wind; hence, they take root all over Britain FRI and Ireland. Being hardy trees, resistant to salt, they even FRI grow easily in the coastal areas of the north. FRI FRI A familiar feature of almost every rural area, their thick FRI foliage offers shade to sheep and cattle, shelter to FRI solitary farmhouses, and inspiration to poets as varied as FRI John Clare and W. B. Yeats. For the Compleat Angler, the FRI sycamore's shade was the perfect place for quiet meditation, FRI and in "Tintern Abbey", Wordsworth expressed his profound FRI delight in the Wye valley from under a "dark sycamore". The FRI oldest sycamore is probably the Tolpuddle tree, where the FRI Dorset labourers gathered to stand up for their rights and FRI numerous visitors have come to pay homage since. The hated, FRI yet common and useful - a theme humanity understands well. FRI FRI Sycamore leaves are "the wrong kind of leaves on the line" FRI that so disrupt British railways each year. Loved by urban FRI councils, the sycamore is the most common tree in cities as FRI it tolerates pollution and harsh city streets so well, yet FRI some countryside organisations see it as a "weed" which FRI needs to be removed. Seen as an ordinary tree, the sycamore FRI has never been valued for its rich timber, even though its FRI wood is as strong as oak, and more easily dyed; the sycamore FRI stands for extraordinary possibilities latent in the FRI commonplace.
