SAT SAT And are we facing the demise of the brass band? As bands SAT struggle to clinch sponsorship deals, Tom investigates the SAT future of the British institution. SAT SAT Producer: Jeremy Evans. SAT SAT Benjamin Britten Biographies SAT Ahead of his centenary later this year two new biographies SAT of composer Benjamin Britten are published this week. One, SAT by Suffolk based writer Neil Powell looks at the poetic SAT alchemy of place and time that defined Britten’s genius. The SAT other by former Head of Music at the Aldeburgh Festival Paul SAT Kildea, explores the relationship between his music, life SAT and creative process. The main controversy of Kildea's book SAT is his retrospective diagnosis of Britten's cardiac illness SAT at the end of his life. He states the evidence points SAT definitively to complications caused by tertiary syphilis; SAT something that's been contested and contradicted in the SAT press this week. SAT SAT Tom talks to both authors and is joined by composer Robert SAT Saxton to review each book. SAT SAT The Future of Brass Bands SAT For many decades since the mid-19th century the tradition of SAT brass banding has flourished. Once associated primarily with SAT industrial towns and cities in the north of England it has SAT evolved into one of the most competitive forms of community SAT based music making. But how do things look for brass bands SAT in the 21st century? The numbers of bands are down compared SAT to a decade ago, and there's a continual struggle for SAT resources, players, and community support. SAT SAT Tom travels to the Royal Northern College of Music’s SAT Festival of Brass in Manchester to meet banding aficionado SAT Paul Hindmarsh and talks to members of the famous Black Dyke SAT Band. Plus John Barber of Fodens, Philip Harper of The Cory SAT Band and Radio 2’s Frank Renton, discuss how new approaches SAT to repertoire, education, and audiences are giving hope for SAT the future. SAT SAT Film Music in Leeds SAT The Howard Assembly Room, now a performance venue inside SAT Leeds Grand Theatre, was for much of the twentieth century, SAT a cinema. This month the venue returns to its roots with an SAT eclectic season of film music events. Built originally in SAT 1877, films were first shown there in 1903. Three years SAT later the building was leased to New Century Pictures who SAT launched it as a cinema showing ‘new century talking & SAT singing pictures’. In 1958 it was renamed The Plaza and SAT continued showing mostly ‘B’ movies, as well as a period of SAT ‘adult’ films, until its closure in 1985. SAT SAT Tom talks to Dominic Gray of Opera North about programming SAT the season and General Manager of the Howard Assembly Room SAT Richard Ashton shows us around. The LSO's TUE Principal Guest Conductor Daniel Harding is joined in this TUE concert by Swedish trumpet virtuoso Haken Hardenberger in a TUE piece described by The Times as 'outstanding: the music TUE begins hellishly but gradually picks up a bluesy swing. TUE TUE We all love to yarn about astonishing weather occurrences. TUE And we're oddly proud of them. They didn't just happen, they TUE happened to us. There are plaques on seaside buildings to TUE commemorate the highest floods. National forecasters TUE regularly announce, as if they are giving away end-of-term TUE prizes, the highest temperatures, the deepest snowfalls, the TUE earliest frosts, though on a scale that might be more TUE appropriate for a local history project. "Rainiest day in TUE Manchester for four years" is hardly of record-breaking TUE interest for the rest of us, but it is for the people who TUE live there. There is, from our ringside seats at the oddball TUE weather circus, an intriguing interplay between freak-show TUE and something more neighbourly and local. TUE TUE Producer: Tim Dee.
