SAT SAT With an international conducting career that has spanned SAT nearly six decades, Amsterdam-born Bernard Haitink is one of SAT today’s most celebrated conductors. Chief Conductor of the SAT Concertgebouw Orchestra for 27 years he is now their SAT Conductor Laureate and has also held posts at the Royal SAT Opera House, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, the Chicago SAT Symphony Orchestra and the London Philharmonic. SAT SAT This month sees the opening of a new exhibition at the SAT British Museum. ‘Ice Age Art: arrival of the modern mind’ SAT features the world’s oldest known sculptures, drawings and SAT portraits illustrating some of the earliest endeavours of SAT creative expression. Estimated to be SAT around 40,000 years old the flute is made from the bone of a SAT griffon vulture. Tom visits the exhibition with Professor SAT Steven Mithen who explains the flute’s significance in our SAT understanding of music at the dawn of the modern mind. SAT SAT French composer, writer, broadcaster, engineer, musicologist SAT and acoustician Pierre Schaeffer gained widespread SAT recognition in his lifetime for his innovative work in both SAT the sciencesparticularly communications and acousticsand the SAT various arts of music, literature and radio presentation SAT after the end of World War II. SUN During the Victorian period, hair was a highly charged SUN symbol of virility and an object of commerce. Changing SUN hairstyles depict the changing power relationship between SUN women and patriarchy. It has been fetishised, idolised and SUN can be very useful if you're a cellist. SUN SUN From the stories of Samson and Delilah and Rapunzel we see SUN how hair - for centuries even - was considered a metaphor SUN for virtue or righteousness: an idea especially evinced in SUN the novels of Elizabeth Gaskell and George Eliot. Bach's first - and most MON notoriously wayward - son. MON MON Wilhelm Friedemann Bach (1710-1784) was the first son of MON arguably the greatest composer who ever lived, JS Bach. How MON could he ever live up to his father? MON MON Indeed, in the decades after his death, Friedemann Bach MON gained a notorious reputation as the "black sheep Bach" - a MON man who had frittered away the vast talent and opportunities MON that had come his way. Remembered by contemporaries as a MON difficult, arrogant man, he ended his life in abject MON poverty, never enjoying the success, or critical acclaim of MON JS Bach's other sons, Carl Phillip Emmanuel and Johann MON Christian - both now regarded as great composers in their MON own right. MON MON And yet...Friedemann Bach's surviving music is arguably more MON fascinating and original than any of the Bach sons. Though MON barely 100 works remain, they're full of raw expressive MON sweeps, strange, bittersweet lyricism and with a naked, MON mercurial quality that prefigures the tormented MON artist-creators of the Romantic Era. MON MON This week, Donald Macleod allows us a rare glimpse at W.F. MON Bach's life and legacy, in conversation with the Bach MON scholar David Schulenberg - featuring a number of Friedemann MON Bach's concerti, flute duets, cantatas and compositions for MON solo keyboard. They unpick what makes "the black sheep" of MON the Bach family so intriguing - both musically and MON historically - and unpeel the layers of anecdote, MON misinformation and outright lies that have affected MON Friedemann Bach's reputation for nearly three centuries.
