"Lulu" is a woman with a SAT troubled past and a fatally irresistible appeal to men. Set SAT in the 1920s, infused with elements of burlesque, surrealism SAT and jazz, Berg's adaptation of Wedekind's plays is a mixture SAT of tragedy and farce. Lulu is a seductress and a murderess SAT who uses sex with a succession of men to attain social SAT advancement. Ultimately downfall follows her ascent up the SAT social ladder. Reduced to prostitution, this twentieth SAT century free-spirit meets a brutal death at the hands of SAT Jack the Ripper. SAT SAT 21:30 Between the Ears b01jqj1j (Listen) SAT In Search of the Balinese Scarecrow SAT SAT Fire flies glimmer over the paddy fields. Water trickles SAT through volcanic irrigation canals. SAT This is where he draws his inspiration. SAT "Just like gamelan", he says. And it was. SAT SAT On the Indonesian island of Bali, music is not just SAT entertainment; it is fully integrated into everyday life. SAT Behind the elaborate walls of family compounds and villages, SAT away from tourist eyes, gamelan orchestras practise daily, SAT slit gongs, called kulkul, call the children to school, and SAT music is offered to the Gods in every ceremony of life. SAT Often a bewilderingly chaotic style of music for the Western SAT ear, gamelan in context can make so much more sense. SAT Even the scarecrows make music here; from bamboo chimes and SAT whirring clackers, to rusty tin cans and elaborate the SAT plastic bag mobiles, shaken by the farmers and the wind; all SAT to rid the valuable rice fields of the birds. SAT SAT In the search for the music of scarecrows we encounter not SAT only the natural and concrete sounds found in gamelan; the SAT toads, birds, geckos, frogs and ducks, but also the new SAT generation of composers and choreographers who are inspired SAT by these sounds to create new music and dances. Farmers are SAT still reputed to make the best composers. SAT SAT Using the scarecrows, wildlife and the gamelan of Bali, "In SAT Search of the Balinese Scarecrow" explores where the music SAT stops and the sounds of nature begin. SAT SAT Music included in the programme included compositions by SAT Bapak I Made Arnawa, Pak Dewa Allit, and I Dewa Putu Berata, SAT a musician, composer , and the founder of Ãudamani , one of SAT Bali's most innovative new gamelan ensembles. SUN SUN 19:45 Sunday Feature b01slkwz (Listen) SUN A Cultural History of Syphilis SUN SUN In the 1490s an apparently new and terrifying disease struck SUN Naples in Southern Italy and swept fire-like across Europe, SUN reaping a dreadful human cost. SUN SUN It must have been as though hell had come early to earth: SUN pustules spread across the genitals and the faces of its SUN many sufferers, unbearable gastrointestinal pain followed SUN upon fevers, screamingly severe headaches and other SUN symptoms. Finally, flesh fell from bones. Syphilis had SUN arrived in Europe, where it would stay, misunderstood, SUN lacking any form of cure, for nearly 500 years. SUN SUN In its reign (before penicillin all but stopped the scourge SUN in its tracks) syphilis held up a mirror to civilisation and SUN radically influenced social and cultural outlooks as well as SUN the histories of medicine and welfare. Syphilis also spread SUN to the arts where the communities of writers, musicians and SUN painters bore the full force of its impact. When, in the SUN 1980s, AIDS struck, it evoked panic and prejudice bearing SUN striking resemblance to the dawn of syphilis in the early SUN sixteenth century. SUN SUN In this BBC Radio 3 Sunday Feature, the writer Sarah Dunant SUN examines the impact "The Great Pox" made in the arts and the SUN wider world in key European cities Florence, Ferrara, Paris SUN and finally central London, where a chance discovery by SUN Alexander Fleming ended half a millennium of suffering. SUN SUN In L.P. Hartley's classic novel, a boy is betrayed by a SUN sophisticated young rich woman and her farmer lover who use SUN him to ferry letters back and forth in the blazing summer of SUN 1900. It's best known from Joseph Losey's 1970 film, which SUN focused on the main plot line, but on re-reading the book, SUN adaptor Frances Byrnes found within it another drama, SUN perfect for radio, in which an old man finds a boyhood diary SUN and is forced to unlock the trauma inside. SUN SUN Re-visited by that summer for the first time since it SUN happened, the older man (Richard Griffiths) turns detective. SUN Leo, in his 60s, finds a locked diary in his attic; it was SUN written in 1900, the last time he lived with any sense of SUN possibility. Leo realises that his tidy life has been a SUN living death and that that summer was to blame. SUN SUN Missing from the film - and working beautifully for the SUN radio - is a clear incremental, emotional journey of a SUN fragile boy-man, who lives in his imagination and is SUN destroyed by an increasingly separate reality. From the SUN beginning the boy (Oscar Kennedy in his first major radio SUN role) is vulnerable - fatherless, socially one step down, SUN the child of a pacifist. SUN SUN Desmali is a quiet emotional man with a sweet toned voice, SUN who comes from the remote island of Annobon, 400 miles south SUN of the capital Malabo, separated from the rest of Equatorial SUN Guinea by Sao Tome and Principe. Desmali is clearly a SUN performer, and in the slum where he lives, ironically named SUN "Niu Bili" meaning New Building, sat under the almond and SUN mango trees he worked an ever growing crowd of elders and SUN children drawn to World Routes' Sunday afternoon recording SUN session. His songs were of love for his guitar, a woman he SUN met called Sonita, but also of a life spent struggling to SUN make ends meet through music. Despite the tinge of wistful SUN melancholy that haunted his words. the music confounded easy SUN definition, so naturally embracing centuries of SUN criss-crossed paths of returned slaves, Europeans and SUN indigenous people that make Equatorial Guinea, and its music SUN so unique. SUN SUN Home to many different ethnic groups, the Fang, Bubi, Ndowe, SUN Bisio, Krio and others, Equatorial Guinea is spread across a SUN mainland portion, squeezed between Gabon and Cameroon, and a SUN series of islands, the largest being Bioko and home to SUN capital Malabo. MON MON 12:00 Composer of the Week b00sv70k (Listen) MON Gabriel Faure (1845-1924), Fauré: The City Awaits MON MON Donald Macleod travels to Paris to chart the life of Gabriel MON Fauré. He's joined by the composer's English biographer MON Jessica Duchen, pianist Billy Eidi, and the leading MON authority on Fauré's music Jean-Michel Nectoux. MON MON Listen to his work and you'd think he was the perfect MON Parisian gentleman. Fauré's music is the epitome of charm, MON of a Gallic gentleman's reserve. There's nothing offensive, MON only page after page of utter beauty and ravishing melody. MON But look into his eyes and you get hints of another story: MON those dark orbs of a deep-thinking southerner, a man who MON always struggled for recognition, but who never lost the MON ability to seduce a lady. MON MON This week Donald Macleod is in Paris to follow Fauré's MON footsteps, and to probe this most enigmatic of MON personalities. From the start, Fauré is an outsider. Sent by MON his family to study at a school for gifted youngsters, the MON composer quickly decides that the traditional route is not MON for him. Instead of heading to the conservatoire, dogged by MON its reputation for fustiness, he falls in with the world of MON aristocratic music-making. And at the former home of singer MON Pauline Viardot, Donald Macleod rediscovers something of the MON allure for Fauré, not just musical opportunities but also MON the attraction of a highly cultured lady in the form of MON Viardot's daughter. MON MON We soon discover that this is a template for the composer's MON life. A few blocks away we take a look inside one of the MON city's stunning former musical salons. Here, Winnaretta MON Singer, daughter of the sewing machine king, hosted the MON likes of Marcel Proust and Georges Sand. Fauré too was a MON regular, and even embarked on a dramatic work for the salon MON with legendary writer Paul Verlaine. It was to be ill-fated MON though: Verlaine succumbed spectacularly to drink and his MON plots became so off-the-wall that Fauré had to abandon his MON project. MON MON There are more refined moments too. In the MON ever-controversial church of La Madeleine, at once a tribute MON to the revolution and a souped-up banking hall cum railway MON station, we find the inspiration of Fauré's most famous MON work, the Requiem, in the death of a local architect, the MON passing of the composer's own father, and the astounding MON acoustics of the building itself. MON MON But it's in the equally echoey hallways of the Paris MON Conservatoire buildings where we get closest to the real MON Fauré. It took an internal scandal before they would let him MON in, but here at last Fauré gets a chance to cement his MON reputation as a member of the French establishment as MON director of the institution. Here we find the very room MON where he had his office, and (in the Salle Fauré) the stage MON where he would take performance exams, and even an ante-room MON solely for students to pull themselves together or recover MON their shattered composure before and after playing to the MON great man. MON MON Donald Macleod begins his week in the shadow of the Eiffel MON Tower, at Passy Cemetery, where Fauré is buried with family MON members, friends, and leading cultural figures. Together MON with writer Jessica Duchen he charts the complex web of MON personalities in the composer's early life, including a MON formative bond with the musician Camille Saint-Saëns which MON at times seemingly bordered on the sexual.
