SUN SUN In the years between the world wars, 'Shanghai' meant jazz SUN and movies, dazzling neon and astonishing department stores. SUN SUN Before the communist takeover, a major part of Shanghai, the SUN 'International Settlement' was administered predominantly by SUN the British; there was also a 'French Concession'. SUN SUN This foreign presence brought oppression, but also infusions SUN of modernity. SUN SUN And as Rana discovers, as China once again modernises at SUN breakneck speed, the legacy of these European imperial SUN outposts is making itself felt once again. SUN SUN He sits in as three 20-something professional Shanghainese SUN women compare notes with an 80-something woman about the SUN relative merits of Shanghai social life today and in the SUN 1930s. SUN SUN He discovers how important aspects of its identity as a SUN world city, such as jazz and speaking English, were quietly SUN cultivated in the early decades of communist rule. And how, SUN since the economic opening, they have emerged back into the SUN light. SUN SUN Talking to novelists and nationalists, historians and SUN ordinary Shanghainese, Rana discovers - to his surprise - SUN that to them, the violence that underpinned the British SUN colonial presence no longer seems profoundly hurtful. SUN SUN Instead, they emphasise the way the British presence brought SUN the modern world to the city. SUN SUN And he talks to those directly engaged in fusing the old SUN cosmopolitan city back into today's hyper-metropolis, from SUN the Italian architect who restores Edwardian buildings on SUN the Bund waterfront to their former splendour, to the SUN Chinese novelist whose detective stories set in modern SUN Shanghai are haunted by the Jazz Age. MON MON He was one of the most successful composers of his age. MON Jules Massenet gave his adoring audiences just what they MON wanted: beautiful melody, rich sentimentality, romance, MON fantasy and an unmistakably French sense of elegance. It was MON a formula that served him well into the twentieth century, MON over a prolific output of twenty-five opera productions. His MON accomplishments were the product of a rigid personal regime, MON often starting work at four o'clock in the morning, and MON continuing for sixteen hours a day. When he wasn't MON composing, Massenet could often be found supervising his MON current stage production, or coaching the latest in a long MON line of brilliant leading ladies. Whether the whiff of MON scandal that followed him throughout his career had any MON basis in fact is still a subject for debate.
