THU Set in the fifteenth century, the mixture of magic and THU medieval chivalry, Sullivan's hoped to create a work halfway THU between the romantic flights of his grand opera Ivanhoe and THU the wit of his earlier Savoy operas. In the first half: Stravinsky's THU "Chant Du Rossignol" or "Song of the Nightingale", in which THU the bird flies and dances high, but is then replaced by a THU mechanical bird which brings illness. However, the real THU nightingale then returns and brings salvation from death THU before finally returning to nature. THU Schubert's 8th Symphony - one of the first romantic THU symphonies, wanders off with Schubert's imagination and THU remains an unfinished work to this day. THU In the second half, the BBC SSO is joined by the great THU French viola virtuoso Antoine Tamestit, to perform Berlioz's THU masterpiece "Harold in Italy". Commissioned as a piece to THU show off Paganini's new Stradivarius viola, it is inspired THU by Lord Byron's poem, 'Childe Harold's Pilgrimage' THU describing the travels and reflections of a world-weary THU young man who looks for distraction in foreign lands. THU 'Abd al-Latif, 1193 THU THU Historian Jonathan Phillips reassesses the influence of THU twelfth-century hero Saladin - a man whose legacy has been THU admired and appropriated by an extraordinary range of people THU through the ages. THU THU In the past three years he's been the subject of a ballet in THU Damascus, a musical in Lebanon and he's seen in a children's THU cartoon (on al-Jazeera TV) where his morality and good THU character are used as an exemplar for young people to THU emulate. THU THU Given his role in defeating and removing Western invaders, THU his legacy has immense symbolism in the Middle East. Arab THU Nationalist leaders such as Nasser of Egypt, Saddam Hussein, THU and the Asad dynasty in Syria have all embraced his THU achievement. Yet he appeals to Islamists too: Osama bin THU Laden praised Saladin's wisdom and his use of the jihad to THU succeed in defeating the West; to the head of the CIA unit THU hunting bin Laden, his opponent's personal piety, generosity THU and sharing of hardships with his men meant, quote, 'he is THU an Islamic hero, as the faith's ideal type, and almost as a THU modern-day Saladin'. THU THU Jonathan questions why Saladin has maintained such an THU incredibly broad appeal down the centuries. THU THU Producer: Mohini Patel.
