SAT Petroc visits The Sixth Form College, Farnborough where 350 SAT of the 3000 students are studying A level Music or Music SAT Technology and also discusses the connection between SAT politicians and the arts with the journalist and broadcaster SAT Anne McElvoy and Michael Brunson, the former Political SAT Editor of ITN. SAT SAT OLLI MUSTONEN SAT SAT Olli Mustonen has a unique place in today’s music scene. SAT Following the tradition of great masters such as SAT Rachmaninov, Busoni and Enescu, Mustonen combines the roles SAT of composer, pianist and conductor in an equal balance. Born SAT in Helsinki, Mustonen began his studies in piano, SAT harpsichord and composition at the age of five. Petroc SAT Trelawny caught up with Mustonen earlier this week, when he SAT was in Tallinn rehearsing the Estonian National Symphony SAT Orchestra in his composition The Old Church at Petäjävesi. SAT Petroc asked him about the connection with his Finnish SAT heritage, and the inspiration he draws from Russian artists SAT - from the late pianist Emil Gilels to composer Rodion SAT Shchedrin. SAT SAT CONSTANT LAMBERT SAT SAT As a composer Constant Lambert is probably best remembered SAT for The Rio Grande but little else, and for a man who SAT devoted the greater part of his life to the establishment of SAT British ballet his work is largely unrecognised today. The SAT economist John Maynard Keynes thought Lambert was SAT potentially the most brilliant man he ever met and for Dame SAT Nanette De Valois, who established The Royal Ballet, he was SAT the greatest ballet conductor and advisor this country has SAT ever had. He also had a career as a music critic and SAT broadcaster in the early days of the BBC’s Third Programme. SAT Petroc talks to Stephen Lloyd the author of Constant Lambert SAT – Beyond The Rio Grande and reviews the new book with the SAT pianist David Owen-Norris and dance critic Zoe Anderson. SAT SAT MUSIC EDUCATION SAT SAT Petroc visits the Sixth Form College in Farnborough in SAT Hampshire, where around 350 of the college’s 3000 students SAT are taking A-Levels in Music or Music Technology, and a SAT further 150 students are involved in active music making, SAT from a recent double-bill of Puccini operas to jazz and SAT popular music. Against the backdrop of a Government SAT consultation about the levels of funding for music education SAT through the Education Services Grant, Petroc talks to the SAT college’s principal Simon Jarvis, to its Director of Music SAT Paul Bambrough and to some of the department’s students – SAT and discovers an ambitious and thriving musical community. SAT SAT POLITICIANS AND THE ARTS SAT SAT Sir Edward Heath learnt music at Chatham & Clarendon Grammar SAT School in Kent before going on to be an organ scholar at SAT Oxford. He considered a full time career as a professional SAT musician before politics took over but he remained a great SAT advocate for music throughout his life, conducting SAT orchestras such as the London Symphony Orchestra and Royal SAT Liverpool Philharmonic and co-founding the European Union SAT Youth Orchestra. SAT SAT Edward Heath’s former home, in the shadow of Salisbury SAT Cathedral, has just reopened to the public, with his grand SAT piano being one of the many objects on display. Are senior SAT politicians today able to be quite as open about a love of SAT classical music? Petroc discusses this and Heath’s legacy SAT with ITN’s former political editor, Michael Brunson and the SAT Economist’s Anne McElvoy. The woman who should have been Queen SAT of Great Britain spent more than thirty years, a prisoner in SAT a moated stately home in Northern Germany and never set foot SAT in the country. SAT SAT Lucy Worlsey recounts her story juxtaposed with a selection SAT of music linked or associated with the Duchess. Including SAT music by JS Bach, Steffani and Handel. SAT SAT 16:00 Sound of Cinema b042bdd6 (Listen) SAT The Newman Dynasty SAT SAT Matthew Sweet looks at the music of the Newman Dynasty of SAT film composers, founded by Alfred and including David, whose SAT score features in "Tarzan", released this week. SAT SAT Alfred Newman scored over 200 films, won 9 Academy Awards SAT and is considered one of the most important figures in the SAT history of Hollywood film music. He was also head of a great SAT dynasty of film composers: brother Lionel, sons David, SAT Thomas and daughter Maria, and nephew Randy Newman; and the SAT dynasty continues on into the next generation. SUN SUN Often set against the background of his beloved South Wales, SUN Thomas explored the big themes: childhood, religion, love SUN and death. The programme includes many well-loved poems and SUN stories, including: 'After the Funeral', 'Do Not Go Gentle', SUN 'The ForceThat Through the Green Fuse Drives the Flower', SUN 'Under Milk Wood', 'A Visit to Grandpa's' and 'A Story'. SUN Thomas himself features, in a powerful archive recording of SUN 'Lament'. SUN SUN An evocative folk song arrangement from the Cory Band, a SUN hymn from the Tywi Male Choir, and a stirring rendition of SUN Land of My Fathers from Bryn Terfel further emphasise SUN Thomas's roots. But although his Welsh identity is so SUN fundamental, Thomas's work has universal resonance. Thus SUN Thomas also rubs shoulders with the likes of Schubert, SUN Debussy, Rachmaninov, Stravinsky, Ligeti, Steve Reich and SUN Johnny Cash. SUN SUN The newly commissioned readings are given by two of SUN Britain's most exciting young actors, Catrin Stewart and SUN Trystan Gravelle - both, like Thomas himself, from South SUN Wales. Together they bring to life the texts in idiomatic SUN and vibrant performances, showing Thomas to be a poet in the SUN true bardic tradition, the full impact of whose work is best SUN appreciated read out loud. FRI FRI 23:00 World on 3 b042bqrs (Listen) FRI La Chiva Gantiva in Session, Commonwealth Connections 14 FRI FRI Mary Ann Kennedy presents a session with La Chiva Gantiva FRI and Commonwealth Connections from Malta and The Gambia. FRI FRI COMMONWEALTH CONECTIONS MUSIC FEATURE: MALTA FRI FRI Malta's history reads like a Dan Brown novel and the music FRI that has been recorded for this week's feature is infused FRI with Malta's wonderfully diverse historical influences. FRI Musician and composer, Ruben Zahra, takes us on a guided FRI tour of traditional Maltese instruments that span the FRI centuries: from the iz-Zummara, a Maltese reed flute FRI fashioned by children as a toy, to the impressive Maltese FRI bagpipe or iz-Zaqq. Ruben's passion for these instruments, FRI the music and the skills needed to play is helping to FRI prevent their extinction, as happened with the Maltese Lira. FRI This is the world's first studio recording of the Maltese FRI Lira which was lost some 200 years ago but recreated using FRI lithographs and paintings. FRI The tradition of working-class folk song is also being kept FRI alive by the Maltese people in the wine bars of Zejtun. The FRI 'Spirtu Pront' genre of folk song requires singers to FRI verbally duel with improvised lyrics and it has been FRI recorded live in the Ta' Ganna bar with six singers FRI competing for their pride and superiority. They are FRI accompanied by local musicians playing the unusual, horned, FRI Maltese guitar. FRI FRI HERITAGE FEATURE: THE GAMBIA FRI FRI The Gambia is a relatively small slice of land in West FRI Africa on the north and south shores of the river Gambia, FRI and surrounded by Senegal. This week's Commonwealth athlete FRI Suwaibou Sanneh currently lives away from his home town of FRI Brikama studying in the States but he carries the country's FRI music with him as he prepares for the 100 metres sprint, an FRI event for which he holds the Gambian national record. A FRI semi-finalist at the London Olympics, he aims to do even FRI better at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Music from FRI Jaliba Kuyateh and The Kumareh Band FRI FRI SESSION: LA CHIVA GANTIVA FRI La Chiva Gantiva are a group of young Colombian musicians FRI who met in Brussels. Fuelled with a desire to get back to FRI their roots, they started to combine Colombian rhythms with FRI rock, afrobeat and funk. Their new album 'Vivo' is out now FRI on Crammed Discs. We catch them as they are about to embark FRI on their UK tour. FRI
