Tom SAT Service speaks to ENO's music director Edward Gardner and SAT reviews the production with the critics Alexandra Coghlan SAT and Geoffrey Smith. On a flying visit to London, the SAT Metropolitan Opera's General Manager Peter Gelb explains to SAT Tom that although the launch of the Met's live HD cinema SAT relays worldwide have been a tremendous success the opera SAT company faces bankruptcy within in the next two or three SAT years if things aren't rectified now. Gelb sets out his plan SAT to save the Met to Tom. SAT SAT Tom also took the opportunity to catch up with the American SAT countertenor Lawrence Zazzo when he was in town and found SAT out about the influence Frankie Valli and the Bee Gees had SAT on him...as well as James Bowman! Zazzo also expressed his SAT frustration at the idea that countertenors are a SAT continuation of the castrati line and not seen as SAT falsettists in their own right. Tom also visits Birmingham SAT to see how preparations are coming along for the composer SAT David Lang's new work called Crowd Out which features a SAT thousand voices shouting, whispering and chanting! SAT SAT BENVENUTO CELLINI AT ENO SAT SAT Benvenuto Cellini, Berlioz’s first opera, tells the story of SAT the famed Italian sculptor, draughtsman and musician. The SAT premiere in Paris in 1838 sparked a riot from its audience SAT and the orchestra claimed the piece was impossible to play! SAT This week English National Opera’s new production of the SAT piece opened in London - the first staging in over thirty SAT years. Tom Service speaks to the opera’s conductor Edward SAT Gardner to find out why Benvenuto Cellini is so rarely SAT staged (and why Gardner thinks it’s the hardest thing he’s SAT ever conducted) and reviews the production with Alexandra SAT Coghlan, music critic for the New Statesman and the SAT broadcaster and critic Geoffrey Smith. SAT SAT PETER GELB: THE CURRENT STATE OF PLAY AT THE MET SAT SAT Peter Gelb is in his eighth season as General Manager of the SAT Metropolitan Opera in New York. In that time he has SAT introduced the highly successful HD cinema relays of the SAT house’s productions worldwide, but even the income and SAT raised profile from these can’t keep the wolf from the Met’s SAT door. In a frank discussion with Tom, Gelb explains that the SAT future of the world famous opera house is at stake and it’s SAT his mission to save it. A few years ago private donations SAT plus the box office takings for the 3,800 seat theatre SAT covered costs but unfortunately that’s no longer the case SAT and if things aren’t rectified Gelb thinks that bankruptcy SAT could be a mere two or three years away. SAT SAT LAWRENCE ZAZZO SAT SAT The American countertenor Lawrence Zazzo is regarded as one SAT of the finest singers of his generation. His roles range SAT from Handel’s Giulio Cesare (The Met and ENO) and Gluck’s SAT Orfeo, to Oberon in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and SAT creating the role of Trinculo in Thomas Ades’s The Tempest. SAT Tom met Zazzo when he was in London this week for a concert SAT at Wigmore Hall, he tells Tom about the singers that SAT influenced him including Frankie Valli, the Bee Gees and SAT James Bowan. He also reveals his frustration at the idea SAT that countertenors are continuations of the castrati line SAT and not seen as falsettists in their own right. SAT SAT DAVID LANG'S CROWD OUT FOR A THOUSAND VOICES SAT SAT Tom visits Birmingham to see how preparations are coming SAT along for the composer David Lang's new work: Crowd Out SAT which features a thousand voices shouting, whispering and SAT chanting. Lang describes how the idea for the piece first SAT came to him during an Arsenal football match. Lang sees SAT Crowd Out as an entirely new kind of piece and a serious SAT musical work that anyone can perform. Tom talks to the SAT musical director Simon Halsey plus Amie Boyd and Scott SAT Pawsey, two members of the choirs taking part. As welll as SAT being performed in Birmingham the piece will also be SAT performed in London and Berlin with local performers SAT building their own ‘home-grown’ Crowd Out company to SAT rehearse and perform the piece. SAT SAT But Joe, and many like him on the autistic spectrum, can't SAT always find the words to summarise their day, or even make SAT sense of the question. Yet later on, they may come round to SAT offering an answer. So what is happening as they struggle to SAT process what is being asked of them? SAT SAT Through sound and interview, Joe and Emma explore where he SAT and others on the autistic spectrum go to in their minds SAT between the question and a possible answer. SAT SAT Emma finds out that part of Joe's resistance to giving an SAT answer may come from the fact that he's exhausted just from SAT the effort of processing the transition between school and SAT home. Whereas so-called "neurotypical" people find it easy SAT to make sense of the different settings and can see them in SAT a wider context, people with autism often focus on every SAT tiny detail and find it difficult to filter information. So SAT a short walk up the path to the house may be crammed with SAT observations of every blade of grass, or a struggle to SAT understand why some things have changed since they left- the SAT window being open for instance when it wasn't before. SUN SUN Luigi Russolo believed that the music of the future should SUN reflect the noises of modern life.
