Inspired SAT by the dramas of Aeschylus and the design of ancient Greek SAT amphitheatres, Wagner created a performing space that SAT revolutionised opera production. With its hidden orchestra SAT and studied lack of architectural ornamentation, the theatre SAT was almost "invisible", focusing the attention solely on the SAT stage image. In this, Wagner's radical vision anticipated SAT the immersive experience of cinema. After his death it SAT became a temple to holy German art that became enmeshed in SAT the dark politics of the 1930s only to rise from the ashes SAT after the 2nd World War with renewed vigour. Ever since SAT Wagner's widow took charge after The Master's death, the SAT Festival has been a family business, and like The Ring, the SAT story of the Bayreuth Festival is essentially a family saga. SAT Tom Service talks to Sven Friedrich, head of the Bayreuth SAT museum and archive, as well as other Wagner experts: John SAT Deathridge, Patrick Carnegy, Michael Ewans, Oliver Hilmes SAT and Gundula Kreutzer. SUN SUN 12:00 Private Passions b04cb6xk (Listen) SUN Stephen Grosz SUN SUN Stephen Grosz waited until he was 60 to publish his first SUN book, 'The Examined Life'. It was a huge overnight success - SUN a best-seller here in Britain and translated into more than SUN 20 languages across the world. It's a distillation of the SUN lifetime he has spent as a psychoanalyst, tens of thousands SUN of hours listening to people in hospitals, forensic clinics SUN and in private practice. It reads like a collection of short SUN stories, full of vignettes of memorable characters: the man SUN who faked his own death, the pathological liar, the lovesick SUN middle-aged woman who meets a man at a party - and turns up SUN at his house the next week with a removals van to move in SUN with him. SUN SUN In Private Passions, in conversation with Michael Berkeley, SUN Stephen Grosz tells his own story: his childhood in Chicago, SUN the son of immigrants who ran a grocery store; student days SUN in radical Berkeley; and now, settled in Britain, how he's SUN facing the challenges of fatherhood and ageing. Music has SUN played an important part right from the beginning, and Grosz SUN admits that his choice of music is very psychologically SUN revealing. SUN SUN His musical choices include Scarlatti, Aaron Copland, SUN Brahms's 3rd Symphony, gospel singer Bessie Jones, SUN Schubert's Piano Sonata no 20, Bob Dylan - and a hilarious SUN Alberta Hunter song about sex, My Handy Man Ain't Handy No SUN More. MON MON Donald Macleod begins the week with Stravinsky's own MON memories of childhood - a trio of songs after children's MON rhymes - as well piano pieces recalling his own attempts to MON 'find' music at the keyboard as a boy. He explores the world MON of old St Petersburg - and the influence of Tchaikovsky on MON the young composer - and fast-forwards to Stravinsky's very MON final work, written at the age of 83, which hauntingly looks MON back at his then-distant youth. MON MON 13:00 BBC Proms b04cf7bg (Listen) MON 2014 Season, Proms Chamber Music, PCM 03: Strauss and Mozart MON MON Live from Cadogan Hall, London MON MON Presented by Petroc Trelawny MON MON Clarinettist Michael Collins and his ensemble London Winds MON pair Strauss's youthful work with Mozart's Serenade in C MON minor. It's a legacy present here in the young Strauss's MON music, but developed and transformed into something MON altogether more rich and strange. MON Clarinettist Michael Collins and his ensemble London Winds MON set Strauss and his favourite composer, Mozart, side by MON side, presenting their very different takes on the MON 18th-century 'Harmonie' ensemble of wind instruments, and MON revealing the early seeds of Strauss's signature lyricism MON that would eventually flower in Der Rosenkavalier. Scored for organ and an MON orchestra calling for no fewer than 10 trumpets (six MON offstage), the Festival Prelude packs symphonic weight into MON its brief duration. MON It is matched for impact by the Deutsche Motette - a MON concerto for choir by any other name: its vocal lines trace MON the same expansive arcs and arabesques as the composer's MON exquisite, autumnal Four Last Songs. Maintaining the mood of MON late-Romantic nostalgia, Elgar's Second Symphony delights in MON flexible chromaticism, its shifting moods coloured in MON delicate shades. TUE TUE Igor Stravinsky was one of the most brilliant, daring and TUE influential musical thinkers of the early 20th century - a TUE composer who forged new musical horizons and scandalised TUE high society. But it wasn't always that way... Stravinsky TUE was, in fact, a relatively late starter - no musical prodigy TUE here - and his earliest musical works show no hint of the TUE coruscating modernism that was to make him the most famous TUE composer in the world. Instead, we find charming, witty and TUE delightful music in the great Russian tradition of TUE Rimsky-Korsakov, Glazunov and Mussorgsky - compositions TUE often sadly overlooked in the great swirl of publicity that TUE surrounded his trio of great ballets, The Firebird, TUE Petrushka and The Rite Of Spring. This week, Donald Macleod TUE explores the world of "Young Igor", presenting a rare TUE hearing of Stravinsky's fine early compositions and a TUE selection of rarities as we follow the composer's TUE development up to the end of the First World War. TUE TUE Continuing his exploration of the music of "Young Igor", TUE Donald Macleod today presents a tuneful series of works TUE overlooked in the melee of publicity that surrounded the TUE premiere of Stravinsky's huge early success, the ballet "The TUE Firebird". These include a trio of charming songs, "The Faun TUE And The Shepherdess", and two Poulenc-esque compositions TUE that seem to look forward to the cool neo-classicism of the TUE 1920s. We end with a rare outing for the original 1910 suite TUE from The Firebird - full of spectacular moments of TUE orchestration that the composer later revised and reigned in TUE in the versions usually heard in the concert hall. Gassed while fighting in the TUE trenches in 1917, Gurney never fully recovered. His War TUE Elegy (1920) is a characteristically personal lament - heavy TUE with bittersweet sadness and regret. While not explicitly TUE programmatic, the slow movement of Walton's First Symphony TUE is among the 20th century's most poignant orchestral cries TUE of grief - an echo in the 1930s, perhaps, of horrors past, TUE and a foreshadow of horrors yet to come. TUE TUE Sally Beamish's accordion concerto 'The Singing' will TUE replace the earlier billed Violin Concerto, which has been TUE cancelled due to performer illness. Originally premiered in TUE 2006 by tonight's soloist, James Crabb, the piece TUE commemorates the Highland Clearances. THU THU Igor Stravinsky was one of the most brilliant, daring and THU influential musical thinkers of the early 20th century - a THU composer who forged new musical horizons and scandalised THU high society. But it wasn't always that way... Stravinsky THU was, in fact, a relatively late starter - no musical prodigy THU here - and his earliest musical works show no hint of the THU coruscating modernism that was to make him the most famous THU composer in the world. Instead, we find charming, witty and THU delightful music in the great Russian tradition of THU Rimsky-Korsakov, Glazunov and Mussorgsky - compositions THU often sadly overlooked in the great swirl of publicity that THU surrounded his trio of great ballets, The Firebird, THU Petrushka and The Rite Of Spring. This week, Donald Macleod THU explores the world of "Young Igor", presenting a rare THU hearing of Stravinsky's fine early compositions and a THU selection of rarities as we follow the composer's THU development up to the end of the First World War. He also THU presents two rare and unusual versions of Stravinsky's THU iconic ballets: the Firebird in its original 1910 ballet THU suite, and an extraordinary - and acclaimed - new THU arrangement of Petrushka by the Mythos accordion duo. THU THU You thought The Rite Of Spring was strange? Stravinsky's THU infamous ballet - which caused a riot on its debut in 1913 - THU has almost completely obscured a truly bizarre, and THU ferociously difficult, miniature cantata the composer THU composed around the same time. Roughly translated as "The THU Starry-Faced One", this four-minute tour-de-force for vast THU orchestra and chorus is rarely performed - today, Donald THU Macleod introduces the work, and explores Stravinsky's time THU in exile in Switzerland during the First World War. FRI FRI 12:00 Composer of the Week b04cffh8 (Listen) FRI Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971), When Igor Met Pablo FRI FRI Donald Macleod presents tales of boozy escapades and Italian FRI adventure as Stravinsky hits it off with the young Pablo FRI Picasso - including a rare complete performance of FRI Stravinsky's sung ballet Pulcinella. FRI FRI Igor Stravinsky was one of the most brilliant, daring and FRI influential musical thinkers of the early 20th century - a FRI composer who forged new musical horizons and scandalised FRI high society. But it wasn't always that way... Stravinsky FRI was, in fact, a relatively late starter - no musical prodigy FRI here - and his earliest musical works show no hint of the FRI coruscating modernism that was to make him the most famous FRI composer in the world. Instead, we find charming, witty and FRI delightful music in the great Russian tradition of FRI Rimsky-Korsakov, Glazunov and Mussorgsky - compositions FRI often sadly overlooked in the great swirl of publicity that FRI surrounded his trio of great ballets, The Firebird, FRI Petrushka and The Rite Of Spring. This week, Donald Macleod FRI explores the world of "Young Igor", presenting a rare FRI hearing of Stravinsky's fine early compositions and a FRI selection of rarities as we follow the composer's FRI development up to the end of the First World War. He also FRI presents two rare and unusual versions of Stravinsky's FRI iconic ballets: the Firebird in its original 1910 ballet FRI suite, and an extraordinary - and acclaimed - new FRI arrangement of Petrushka by the Mythos accordion duo. FRI FRI By the end of the First World War, Stravinsky was in FRI permanent exile. But that wasn't about to stop him having FRI fun... Donald Macleod explores the riotous time Igor FRI Stravinsky and Pablo Picasso had in Italy when they met for FRI the first time, as well as the shared interest in commedia FRI dell'arte that sparked Stravinsky's ballet Pulcinella. The FRI programme is framed by a rare performance - in three FRI excerpts - of the complete ballet (most usually heard in its FRI abridged concert suite) allowing us to hear the brilliant FRI sung arias. At around 80 minutes in FRI length the Symphony is epic, seeming to encompass the very FRI span of life and death itself. Described by Leonard FRI Bernstein as 'terrifying, and paralyzing', tonight Donald FRI Runnicles - chief conductor of the BBC SSO and music FRI director of the Deutsche Oper Berlin - brings his affinity FRI with musical drama to this mighty testament. FRI FRI 21:30 Sunday Feature b03d7pl9 (Listen) FRI The Devastation of British Art FRI FRI From the Dissolution of the monasteries to the Civil War, FRI Diarmaid MacCulloch tells the dramatic story of iconoclasm FRI and reformation in the English church. FRI FRI A difficult and gradual process, the English Reformation FRI eventually succeeded in denuding churches up and down the FRI country of all their images - and (during the Civil War) FRI even their organs. Word replaced image as the medium for FRI worship. Looking at the white-washed churches of Wetherden FRI and Bures in Suffolk, Diarmaid assesses the complex set of FRI motivations which drove the iconoclasts to tear down FRI statues, dismantle rood screens and smash stained glass. He FRI examines the journal of William Dowsing, probably the most FRI notorious iconoclast of the Civil War period, and other FRI documents that shine a light on the complex motivations of FRI Reformation iconoclasts. FRI FRI Diarmaid's journey also takes him to Winchester Cathedral FRI where the great rood screen was attacked (probably under FRI Edward) and the stained glass later smashed by Cromwell's FRI soldiers. Academic Philip Lindley and sculptor Richard FRI Deacon help to explain the power of religious images and the FRI corresponding fear they induced in iconoclasts. FRI FRI Finally, the Reverend Canon Doctor Roland Riem of Winchester FRI and artist Sophie Hacker talk about the place of images in FRI today's churches and cathedrals. Diarmaid considers whether FRI the fanaticism of the Reformation reformers bears any FRI relation to the iconoclastic attacks we have witnessed in FRI our own century. And Tabitha Barber, Tate Britain curator, FRI reflects on the legacy of this iconoclastic movement: has FRI the destructiveness of the Reformation made a lasting impact FRI on the history of British Art?
