SUN SUN 12:00 Private Passions b04lpqnb (Listen) SUN David Lan SUN SUN David Lan is a huge force in theatre in Britain, indeed SUN internationally. But how he got there is surprising. Brought SUN up in Cape Town, he began his career as an anthropologist, SUN living for two years in a remote SUN area of Zimbabwe in order to study spirit magic. He went on SUN to become a playwright and documentary director, and he's SUN written the libretto for two operas. One critic recently SUN described Lan as a 'Diaghilev-like figure' because of his SUN flair for bringing artists together. As Artistic Director of SUN the Young Vic, he led the £12.5m theatre rebuild - and has SUN over the last 14 years established a reputation both for SUN spotting new talent, and for persuading directors from all SUN over the world to come to London to direct wildly inventive SUN productions. His latest role, announced this year, is SUN Consulting Artistic Director for the New York Arts Centre, SUN which is still being built, on the site of the 9/11 attacks. SUN In Private Passions, David Lan talks about his upbringing in SUN South Africa, and how he learnt to love music as a young boy SUN in his grandmother's shop, which sold bicycles - and piles SUN of old 78s. He describes his time as an anthropologist in SUN Zimbabwe, living in a remote and dangerous part of the SUN country just after the war of independence. And he pays SUN tribute to the relationship at the heart of his life, with SUN distinguished playwright Nicholas Wright, whom Lan met when SUN he was only 17. SUN Music includes Beethoven, Shostakovich, Paul Simon, Nina SUN Simone, a Bach Prelude played by jazz pianist Keith Jarrett, SUN and the overture to Mozart's Magic Flute - played on SUN marimbas. SUN With music including Bach, Ligeti, SUN Mendelssohn and Randy Newman. SUN Montaigne drew on a lifetime of experience and observation, SUN but far from inscrutable musings, the Essays are often SUN earthy and direct - at once scatological and astute, SUN philosophical and witty, playful and profound. SUN The Essays were first published in 1580 and are positively SUN Shakespearian, both in their range and in their humanism. SUN Montaigne speaks as himself, directly and in clear prose, SUN and says the most extraordinarily heretical things. Some of SUN his arguments include the notion that human beings are on a SUN par with the animals and that they are just a tiny part of SUN Nature, all of which deserves equally to be respected and SUN that death is just the end of life and it is life which is SUN the important thing. SUN In 1676 the Vatican caught up with Montaigne the best part SUN of a century after his death when the Essays were put on its SUN index of prohibited books, where they stayed until 1854. The SUN Essays have been continuously available for the last four SUN and a half centuries not only because they are engaging and SUN entertaining but also because of the spark of SUN self-revelation they so often generate. SUN In this programme, seasoned Montaignistes will find SUN themselves recognising an old friend, and those coming to SUN the Essays for the first time will find a new one. TUE TUE 22:00 Free Thinking b04lpxj2 (Listen) TUE Landmarks: Proust's A la recherche du temps perdu TUE TUE Tonight's edition of Free Thinking is devoted to one of the TUE landmarks of European literature -- Marcel Proust's gigantic TUE novel, A la recherche du temps perdu which is perhaps best TUE known in English as In Search TUE of Lost Time. TUE Matthew Sweet gathers together four Proust fans from very TUE different backgrounds - the Pulitzer prize winning novelist, TUE Jane Smiley, the psychotherapist, Jane Haynes, Christopher TUE Prendergast, who has edited the latest translation of the TUE book and from France, the writer, Marie Darrieussecq. The TUE actor Peter Marinker tackles the difficult task of giving an TUE English voice to Proust. TUE The novel is a modernist masterpiece which offers a TUE symphonic account of what it meant to be alive in France as TUE the 19th century became the 20th. To read it is to explore TUE the mechanics of human sensibility -- it is comic, tragic, TUE discursive, scholarly, obscene, vicious and heartfelt but TUE above all profoundly self aware. Sometimes it reads like a TUE journal or a gossip column; sometimes like autobiography; TUE from times like a scholarly monograph: and often as TUE delicious parody; the coils of Proust's language slows time TUE right down and tempts the reader ever further into the maze TUE of self examination. TUE Human attachment lies at the heart of the book - whether TUE it's a young boy's love of his grandmother, a grown man's TUE obsessive sexual interest in a young woman or the self TUE deceptions of narcissism. But these are just a few of the TUE book's facets as the mind of its narrator moves from the TUE marriage of his bourgeois family's neighbours in the TUE country, the Swanns, to the glamour and snobbery of the TUE aristocracy in Paris. TUE Producer: Zahid Warley. TUE TUE 22:45 The Essay b03q5gkb (Listen) TUE The Book that Changed Me, Tracey Thorn on The Female Eunuch TUE TUE Singer Tracey Thorn describes how she as a rebellious TUE teenager she seized on the feminist classic "The Female TUE Eunuch" by Germaine Greer. "It seemed brand new, and it TUE spoke to me of things I'd long thought and TUE felt without ever having words or names for," she says. She TUE explains how the book was a deep influence on the lyrics she TUE wrote for her band Everything but the Girl. But now she is TUE herself a mother, she finds herself questioning Greer's TUE contemptuous dismissal of parenting. "As feminists, I feel TUE we are more forgiving now than Greer was; more inclusive, TUE less dismissive, and perhaps that's because greater freedoms TUE have brought with them greater liberties for us to be so. TUE It's not such a threat now to admit to being happily married TUE and enjoying motherhood when we are not utterly constrained TUE and defined by these roles." TUE Producer: Smita Patel. TUE TUE 23:00 Late Junction b04lpxrc (Listen) TUE Verity Sharp's selection tonight includes multi-part folk TUE songs from the ethnic minorities of China's Yunnan province, TUE Jordi Savall and Montserrat Figueras's exquisite Moments in TUE Time, and the spirited fiddle TUE playing of Nick Wyke and Becki Driscoll. THU THU 14:00 Afternoon on 3 b04lpsq0 (Listen) THU Today's Opera Matinee is by Rossini, his opera seria THU "Aureliano in Palmira" a historical tale of Love and War THU between the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius (Aureliano), and THU Queen Zenobia of Palmyra, a city in THU Syria. THU For such a rarity (Aureliano in Palmira was a flop at its THU first outing, never re-staged in Rossini's lifetime and THU disappearing almost without trace), a great deal of the THU music sounds familiar - very familiar in fact. From the THU Overture there is more than a nagging sense that you've THU heard this before somewhere and that is because Rossini THU re-cycled his forlorn historical drama into one of his comic THU masterpieces "The Barber of Seville" (which also flopped on THU its first outing, but history has been kinder to it). So the THU quality of the music is assured. THU And the setting of the Rossini Festival Pesaro is the most THU sympathetic place to hear again this original score with the THU outstanding pairing of tenor Michael Spyres as the Roman THU emperor Aureliano and soprano Jessica Pratt as the Palmyran THU queen Zenobia. THU We hear Act 1 today and Act 2 is tomorrow THU 2pm Opera Matinee THU Rossini: Aureliano in Palmira - opera seria in 2 Acts THU From the 2014 Pesaro Festival THU Act 1 THU Act 1 begins in the temple in Palmyra. Queen Zenobia, her THU lover Arsace, Prince of Persia, and the citizens of Palmyra THU are praying for deliverance from the Romans, led by the THU emperor Marcus Aurelius (Aureliano), who are approaching the THU city gates. THU Battle is joined outside the city and the Romans defeat the THU Palmyrans and capture Arsace, who declares his love for THU Zenobia to Aureliano. Zenobia tries to negotiate the release THU of her captured citizens, but Aureliano is adamant and THU prepares to enter Palmyra itself. THU Zenobia prepares the city for one last desperate defence, THU knowing that her lover Arsace is already in the hands of THU Aureliano. THU Aureliano ..... Michael Spyres (tenor) THU Zenobia .....
