SAT SAT HARRY PARTCH, HOBO COMPOSER SAT SAT Harry Partch was one of the most SAT distinctive and influential American composers of the SAT mid-twentieth century, an SAT inventor of a new musical scale and builder of his own SAT unique instruments . Tom SAT profiles the "hobo" composer with the help of S. Andrew SAT Granade whose SAT recent study focuses on Partch the person alongside the SAT cultural icon he SAT represented and Bob Gilmore who wrote the 1998 biography of SAT the composer. We SAT also hear from two musicians who have first-hand experience SAT of playing Partch’s SAT music - the percussionist Jared Soldiviero from Newband SAT (recent custodians of Partch’s original instrument SAT collection) and Helen Bledsoe of ensemble SAT musikFabrik, who have developed a complete set of SAT reconstructions for SAT performances of Partch’s music, including Delusion of the SAT Fury at this year’s SAT Edinburgh Festival. SAT SAT IDIL BIRET SAT SAT Tom SAT Service talks to the Turkish pianist Idil Biret. Biret was SAT born in Ankara in SAT 1941, and studied at the Paris Conservatoire under the SAT guidance of Nadia SAT Boulanger, graduating at the age of fifteen with three SAT first prizes. SAT SAT LIES AND EPIPHANIES BY CHRIS WALTON SAT SAT Tom SAT talks to Chris Walton about his latest book Lies and SAT Epiphanies which looks at SAT the inspiration of five composers from Wagner to Berg, and SAT uppicks the stories SAT they told about their music, from the vision on his sickbed SAT which Wagner SAT claimed inspired the opening of the Ring Cycle, to the SAT finale of Mahler's SAT second symphony, which was supposedly born of a "lightning SAT bolt" of SAT inspiration at the funeral of Hans von Bulow. Alban Berg's SAT violin concerto was SAT purportedly his direct response to the tragic early death SAT of Alma Mahler's SAT daughter, but Chris tells Tom about the web of political, SAT social and sexual SAT relationships which are much more likely to provide the SAT backdrop for Berg’s SAT work. In return, she asks that he SAT gives her the head of the imprisoned prophet, John the SAT Baptist on a silver platter... SUN SUN 12:00 Private Passions b03c06zv (Listen) SUN Greg Doran SUN SUN Greg Doran is one of those lucky people who seem to have SUN found his perfect place in life. From the age of 13, when SUN his mother first took him to the theatre in Stratford, SUN Shakespeare's been his passion; as a boy SUN he dedicated himself to seeing every single Shakespeare play SUN - sometimes managing to watch three Macbeths in a day. SUN SUN So - what better job than Artistic Director of our great SUN national Shakespeare company, a role he took on 18 months SUN ago. His production of Richard II with David Tennant in the SUN lead opens on 10 October, and he's directing Henry IV next SUN year with his partner Anthony Sher playing Falstaff. SUN SUN Doran doesn't come from a theatrical background - his father SUN ran a nuclear power station. But his passion for music began SUN early, thanks to a concert in the local village hall in SUN Lancashire. A friend of his mother's, Mrs Sidebottom, got up SUN on stage and sang 'Blow the Wind Southerly'. And young Greg SUN was hooked. That haunting folk song begins his choice of SUN music - sung in this case by Kathleen Ferrier. Other choices SUN include Duke Ellington, a song by Cervantes, and a Vivaldi SUN Concerto which changed Doran's life when he heard it in SUN Paris. It was a low point - a love affair had ended, his SUN ambition to be an actor was foundering. And the music spoke SUN to him, and gave him a new direction. SUN SUN In Private Passions, he talks to Michael Berkeley about his SUN passion for Shakespeare, and about his relationship with SUN Antony Sher. Its foundations are a shared life in theatre, SUN but also a love of food: when Anthony's depressed, Greg SUN cooks for him the comfort food he ate as a child in South SUN Africa. He's even learned how to make a special lamb stew - SUN and he gives us the recipe: "I believe there is a Jewish SUN saying that food is love. For me, tomato bredie is an SUN expression of love." SUN SUN The Exposition Universelle of 1889 was a vast showground SUN of science and culture which attracted 30 million visitors SUN to Paris. The world had never seen such technology, art, SUN music, and futuristic architecture gathered in one place. SUN SUN Andrew Hussey chases the shadows it cast, glimpses of its SUN colossal political ambition - to put France back on the SUN world stage; to define what it meant to be French, and what SUN it meant to be civilised. SUN SUN He walks the streets of Paris with author Eric Hazan, SUN re-imagines the Belle Epoque and the spectacle - the iron, SUN the glass, the noise - with novelist and poet Patrick SUN McGuinness. And strolling past Debussy, Paul Gauguin, Thomas SUN Edison and other visitors, he ascends the Tower itself, SUN climbing ever taller and ever thinner into the Parisian sky. SUN And finds not just a phantasmagoria of republicanism, art SUN and progress, but a long shadow - a colonial legacy, a Human SUN Zoo, which created debates which still resonate in French SUN culture today. In 1907 Falla moved to Paris, with TUE a promise of a concert tour that in the end never TUE materialised. He managed to gather together TUE enough pupils to be able to afford stay on, and lived there TUE for the next seven years. He said he found in Paris "what TUE became an extension of my home country." It was in France TUE that Falla's opera La Vida Breve first found success, after TUE which it seems that he was intending to settle permanently TUE in Paris. He hoped his parents and his sister would be able TUE to join him: "not in Paris but a healthy quiet village, TUE cheerful and picturesque, within an hour of the Gare TUE Saint-Lazare." However, very soon afterwards he found Paris TUE mobilising for WW1 and, in common with thousands of other TUE foreigners, left the city, and he returned to neutral Spain. TUE Bavarian-born and Austrian-educated, Christoph Willibald TUE Gluck became master of the Parisian stage, renowned for his TUE reforming operas, into which he injected human drama. This TUE is also a crucial element of his masterpiece ballet, Don TUE Juan, first performed in Vienna in 1761. Familiar to anyone TUE who knows Mozart's opera on the same subject, Don Giovanni, TUE the ballet's story tells of the notorious philanderer's TUE descent into hell, complete with wild fandango and TUE terrifying passacaglia. TUE Mozart was inspired by the bustling Parisian music scene but TUE not by the city itself. His unhappy time there in the 1770s TUE was not improved by a commission for a concerto for flute TUE and harp, apparently two of his least favourite instruments. TUE Yet the concerto sparkles with joy and playfulness, and has TUE become a well-loved favourite.
