MON MON 12:00 Composer of the Week b05qdw0d (Listen) MON Germaine Tailleferre (1892-1983), Breaking Free: 1892 to MON 1920 MON MON Germaine Tailleferre braves her father's stern opposition to MON study music, becoming friends with future members of Les MON Six, Darius Milhaud, Arthur Honegger and Georges Auric along MON the way. MON MON There can't be many instances where studying music is MON likened to being a street-walker on one of the most shady MON streets in Paris. That was the accusation Germaine MON Tailleferre's father hurled at her, a child prodigy who MON wanted to take her music studies more seriously. It fell to MON Tailleferre's enterprising mother to come up with a MON solution. After her father left for work, Tailleferre was MON escorted to her music lessons each day by some obliging MON local nuns. MON MON This unpromising start turned into a long and largely MON successful career in which Tailleferre continued to write MON music up to her death, at the age of 91, in 1983. MON Fame found Tailleferre early on, in the 1920s, when she was MON a member of the group of musicians eventually titled "Les MON Six". Initially championed by Erik Satie and Jean Cocteau, MON two of the most influential voices among the Parisian MON avant-garde, the group, which comprised Darius Milhaud, MON Arthur Honegger, Georges Auric, Francis Poulenc, Louis Durey MON and Tailleferre, prospered in a heady environment of MON artistic expression and friendship. Extending across the MON Arts, they collaborated with Picasso, Georges Braque and MON Marie Laurencin and poets like Paul Claudel, Paul Valery, MON Guillaume Apollinaire and Max Jacob. MON Two disastrous marriages and the occupation of France during MON the second world war curtailed Tailleferre's musical MON activities and may at least in part explain why her early MON fame dwindled in later years. Yet, while much of her music MON remains in manuscript form, including a large body of music MON for film, television and radio, happily this shadowy figure MON among "Les Six" is returning to the limelight. Presenting MON her work for the first time on "Composer of the Week", MON Tailleferre's published legacy reveals a rich treasure trove MON of chamber works, solo piano, concertos, ballets, operas and MON songs. MON MON Today, Donald Macleod explores Tailleferre's early life. MON Entering the Paris Conservatoire in 1904, Tailleferre won MON numerous prizes. A talented pianist, she also studied the MON harp. WED WED In exploring five British comic film actors from the WED mid-20th century, Simon Heffer's gaze has never strayed far WED from the British obsession with class. The double-barrelled, WED single-named actor Terry-Thomas - with his monocle, his WED cigarette holder and the hallmark gap between his two front WED teeth - perfected the role of a particular type of British WED toff. Taking star billing in a series of films such as WED Private's Progress, I'm Alright, Jack, and Carlton-Browne of WED the FO in the mid-1950s, his timing was perfect too. Simon WED Heffer argues that whether playing a cad, a rotten bounder WED or a charmer, Terry-Thomas came to represent the louche and WED degenerate side of the upper classes at a time when the WED class system was coming under full attack. FRI FRI Today Donald Macleod explores Tailleferre's life from the FRI 1950s onwards. Punctuated by a series of commemorations FRI marking her association with the artistic group of friends FRI "Les Six", Tailleferre's projects were as varied as ever, FRI including a series of comic operas and a chamber opera, "The FRI Little Mermaid", after the famous story by Hans Christian FRI Andersen. He explains why they FRI aroused fear, curiosity and wonder at the time they were FRI drawn, and argues that they have much in common with the FRI monsters we find in contemporary culture. FRI FRI 22:45 The Essay b05qfqft (Listen) FRI British Film Comedians, Sid James FRI FRI In the final programme celebrating comic actors from FRI mid-20th century British film, Simon Heffer turns his gaze FRI on a man whose priapic laugh alone merits an entire radio FRI series. Sid James was at the heart of the phenomenally FRI successful Carry On films and one of the best-loved and most FRI easily recognised comic actors of his day. FRI FRI Throughout the 1950s and '60s, the many roles he played were FRI all, in essence, the same. As Simon Heffer puts it: "To say FRI Sid had range as an actor would be to do him an injustice. FRI Sid not have range. Sid was Sid. And it was as well he was, FRI because the audience expected Sid in the full pomp of his FRI Sidness, and would have been crushed with disappointment by FRI anything else." FRI FRI But Sid was not, by birth, the wise-cracking Cockney geezer FRI whom he came to embody. He traced his roots back to FRI Johannesburg, where he started life as Solomon Joel Cohen FRI and began his working life as a gentlemen's hairdresser. FRI FRI Simon Heffer traces his journey from a few years in rep to FRI bit-parts in British comic films, his years of triumph in FRI the Carry On films and his dramatic and unpredictable death FRI on stage in 1976 - a somehow fitting end to a series on FRI comic actors in their lives and on film. FRI FRI Producer: Beaty Rubens.
