SAT SAT Radio Alwan began in 2013 as a small community radio station SAT in Northern Syria, broadcasting independent information in SAT response to the repression and civil war that followed the SAT demonstrations of 2011. SAT SAT Now broadcasting from an undisclosed address in a busy SAT district of Western Istanbul, Radio Alwan transmits daily SAT programmes on its FM frequency back into Syria to areas SAT around Aleppo and Idlib - although at the moment its Aleppo SAT coverage is suspended after an attack on its offices - and SAT over the internet. SAT SAT Alwan in Arabic means 'colours', a name the station wants to SAT reflect in its aim of representing the many different groups SAT across Syrian society. SUN SUN 12:00 Private Passions b074z5g8 (Listen) SUN Melanie Reid SUN SUN For Easter Sunday, Michael Berkeley's guest is Melanie Reid, SUN who writes a weekly column in The Times about her life as a SUN tetraplegic. Six years ago, on Good Friday 2010, she was out SUN cross-country riding in the Scottish countryside near her SUN home in Stirlingshire. The horse refused a jump and she was SUN thrown off - flipping her body. She broke her neck and back. SUN Since then Melanie Reid has been paralysed from the armpits SUN down. SUN SUN When you're well and young, or young at heart, and busy SUN devouring life, working, playing, laughing, eating, SUN drinking, you assume you're in control. Things change though SUN when the world topples from its axis and your glorious SUN certitude that tomorrow will be as good as today is exposed SUN as pitiful complacency. SUN SUN In Private Passions, Melanie Reid talks about adjusting to SUN life after her accident, 'a painful rebirth'. Although music SUN has been important to her since childhood, after the SUN accident she found that for several years she could not SUN listen to it - the emotional effect was unbearable. Now, SUN though, she finds music inspiring and sustaining. Her SUN choices include Jacqueline du Pré playing Bach's 1st Cello SUN Suite; Beethoven's 'Emperor' Concerto; Gustav Holst's SUN 'Planets' Suite, Nielsen's Violin Concerto, and Strauss's SUN 'Four Last Songs'. SUN SUN In an inspiring conclusion to the programme, Melanie Reid SUN talks about the happiness she has re-found recently, and the SUN way her life has slowed down so that she can appreciate the SUN beauty of nature, and the changing seasons. And she pays SUN tribute to her loving husband and son, who both play the SUN bagpipes - a cue to play a very untraditional take on the SUN pipes from the Red Hot Chilli Pipers. MON MON 12:00 Composer of the Week b074zc6k (Listen) MON Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767), The Making of the Man MON MON Telemann was a many-splendoured thing: gardener, translator, MON theorist, publisher, poet, entrepreneur, and an early MON tech-geek. He also earned himself a place in the Guinness MON Book of World Records as music's most prolific composer. But MON is that necessarily an accolade to be proud of? MON MON And so Donald Macleod sets out to uncover the real Georg MON Philipp Telemann - a prolific, industrious polymath or, as MON one historian put it, a purveyor of 'factory products' MON achieved 'by dint of sedulous scribbling'. We also have to MON wrestle with a primary source on the composer which is at MON once both a treasure trove, and a route map of garden MON alleys. Johann Mattheson's 'autobiography' of the composer MON is a product of its time, with its tantalising combination MON of hard facts and fantasy. MON MON In the opening programme we meet the young Telemann, and try MON to hang some hard facts on Mattheson's tantalising portrait. MON We quickly discover that industry and tenacity ran in the MON composer's blood from an early age, as his mother puts all MON her effort into diverting her precocious son as far from a MON career in music as possible. TUE TUE This sonata was written by Shostakovich in Moscow during the TUE autumn of 1968, as a 60th birthday present to the renowned TUE violinist David Oistrakh. It was warmly received by the TUE public and the official stamp of approval was given when the TUE 3rd movement of the Sonata was chosen as one of the set TUE pieces in the prestigious Tchaikovsky Competition in 1970. TUE The work opens with a soft unison piano line in octaves and TUE is joined by the violin in a hushed counter melody. The TUE second movement is an energetic contrast to the first, and TUE the last movement, a theme and variations, contains cadenzas TUE for both piano and violin, before a final statement of the TUE opening theme. TUE TUE Much of Galina Ustvolskaya's work was relatively unknown TUE until recently. She wrote that her music was 'spiritual in TUE nature and best suited to performance in a church'. TUE Ustvolskaya was a student and close friend of Shostakovich TUE and he regarded her as a promising student and one with a TUE unique voice. In one private letter he wrote 'It is not you TUE who are influenced by me; rather it is I who am influenced TUE by you'. TUE Ustvolskaya lived alone in St Petersburg and declined most TUE requests for photographs and interviews. Her output consists TUE of just 21 pieces of music, all written between 1946 and TUE 1990. WED WED Shostakovich wrote his trio in 1944 with the grim realities WED of the Second World War weighing heavily on his mind. The WED siege of Leningrad finished in January with a deathtoll of WED over a million and a realisation of the fate of the Jews WED across Europe was dawning. Compounding this misery, his WED closest friend, the music writer Ivan Sollertinsky, died. WED Shostakovich dedicated the work to his friend following a WED tradition established by Tchaikovsky in memory of Rubinstein WED and Rachmaninov with his Trio Elégiaque in memory of WED Tchaikovsky. The resulting masterpiece is a memorial to all WED who died at this time - a blend of bleak landscapes, WED oppressive rhythmic figures, beautiful melodies and ironic WED juxtaposition such as the inclusion of a joyous Jewish WED klezmer melody in the final movement. WED WED The figure of Arno Babajanian makes a fascinating contrast WED to his rather better known contemporary and compatriot WED Dmitri Shostakovich. Why his name and his music should be so WED little known in the West is a mystery. In his native WED Armenia, Babajanian is a national hero. His home town of WED Yerevan in Armenia has a plaque and a statue and their WED concert hall is named after him. There is even a minor WED planet re-named 9017 Babadzhanyan. Spotted by Aram WED Khachaturian at a young age as a rare musical talent, WED Babajanian studied in Armenia and Moscow and established WED himself back in Armenia where he was hugely acclaimed, WED writing in many genres including popular song. His WED popularity and fame spread to the wider USSR and he was WED named as a People's Artist of the Soviet Union in 1971. This WED Trio is considered one of his most important works and was WED acclaimed as such at its first performance in 1952. Full of WED romance, drama and melody, it also reflects his interest in WED Armenian folk melodies and folklore. In this respect his WED music has much in common with Rachmaninov and Khachaturian, WED and his later works show the influence of Bartok and WED Prokofiev. Sarah explores THU the variety of instruments with keyboards that composers THU wrote music for before the pianoforte came to prominence in THU the late 18th century. THU THU 9.30am THU Take part in our daily musical challenge: can you remember THU the television show that featured this piece of classical THU music? THU THU 10am THU Sarah's guest is the Scottish poet and novelist Jackie Kay. THU Jackie is an award-winning writer of poetry, plays and THU novels. Her recent works include a collection of short THU stories, Reality, Reality, a book of poetry titled Fiere, THU and a memoir about meeting her Nigerian birth father, Red THU Dust Road. Jackie will be talking about her writing and THU sharing a selection of her favourite classical music, THU including a work by Errollyn Wallen, the traditional THU Scottish song Eriskay Love Lilt and Robert Burns' Mary THU Morison, every day at 10am. THU THU 10:30am THU Sarah places Music in Time as she turns to the Baroque THU period and Domenico Scarlatti's forward-looking Sonata in E THU major K.380, which anticipates the classical style. THU THU 11am THU Sarah's artists of the week are the Orpheus Chamber THU Orchestra. Founded in 1972 in New York by a group of THU musicians keen to marry the richness of the orchestral sound THU with the intimacy of a chamber ensemble, the Orpheus Chamber THU Orchestra play without a conductor, preferring a THU collaborative partnership of musicians. They have since THU become recognised as one of the world's great ensembles. THU Throughout the week Sarah features their recordings of THU repertoire by composers ranging from Handel and Mozart to THU Bizet and Copland. THU THU Handel THU Music for the Royal Fireworks, HWV351 THU Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. THU THU 12:00 Composer of the Week b074zl4t (Listen) THU Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767), Doing Business THU THU It looks like the worst decision of his life - turning down THU the job of Leipzig kantor which then cemented JS Bach's THU immortality. But was it actually a masterstroke? THU THU Donald Macleod uncovers Telemann's business acumen, THU beginning with that shrewd job negotiation which saw the THU composer leverage a hefty salary increase from his employers THU in Hamburg. We also explore Telemann's entrepreneurial THU activities as he cashes in from the wealth of the local THU nobility and filing expenses claims which would make any THU accountant proud. THU THU 13:00 Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert b074zll9 (Listen) THU Shostakovich on Strings, Hakhnazaryan and Shevchenko THU THU Narek Hakhnazaryan and Oxana Shevchenko, in a concert THU recorded at the Royal Consevatoire of Scotland, perform THU Rachmaninov's Cello Sonata and a selection of Shostakovich's THU Preludes in arrangements for cello and piano by the THU Russian-born pianist, composer and award-winning poet, Lera THU Auerbach. THU THU Unlike his later 24 Preludes & Fugues inspired directly from THU Bach's exploration of the keyboard by the same name, THU Shostakovich drew his inspiration from the preludes of THU Chopin and ordered the key signatures of his preludes with THU the same musical logic, grouping major preludes with their THU relative minor keys. These short pieces, each with their own THU character are an example the composer's genius in writing THU distilled miniatures both humorous and profound. Polka, THU Waltzes, Gavottes, Marches and Nocturnes are transformed and THU imbued with ambiguity, mockery, playfulness and occasional THU bittersweet sadness. THU THU Rachmaninov's Cello Sonata was written in 1901 just after THU his mighty Second Piano Concerto was premiered in Moscow to THU huge critical acclaim and shares its highly romantic THU character. Rachmaninov dedicated it to his friend, the THU eminent cellist Anatoliy Brandukov, who was well-known as an THU interpreter of Tchaikovsky having premiered many of the THU older composer's works. Rachmaninov perhaps had his sound in THU mind in this four-movement work filled with beautiful THU melodic lines. The composer himself teamed up with Brandukov THU for the premiere to play the highly expressive and virtuosic THU part that he had written for the piano and noted that the THU sonata was "not for cello with piano accompaniment, but for THU two instruments in equal balance."
