He visits some of SAT Satie's favourite haunts in Paris and endeavours to find the SAT truth behind the colourful stories of his eccentric life. SAT With expert opinion from Caroline Potter and Pascal Rogé. SAT SAT Satie 150 SAT SAT Tom Service re-appraises Erik Satie, the man and his music, SAT on the 150th anniversary of his birth. SAT SAT Satie was an eccentric figure in Paris: the velvet gentleman SAT with identical suits, who lived in a cramped ‘cupboard’ in SAT Montmartre before moving to the suburbs in Arcueil. Born in SAT Normandy to a French father and Scottish mother, he was a SAT talented child but a terrible student at the Paris SAT Conservatoire: reports of his piano playing call him a lazy SAT mediocrity. Attracted to Montmartre by its revolutionary SAT spirit in the late 1880s and 1890s, he established the SAT strange sound world that he would make his own – writing SAT around this time, the pieces for which he’s still most SAT famous – the Gymnopedies and Gnossienes. He had an uncanny SAT knack of being involved in all the latest artistic advances SAT of the time, collaborating with Jean Cocteau and Pablo SAT Picasso in the Cubist ballet Parade, which the poet SAT Apollinaire dubbed ‘a kind of surrealism’. In the later SAT 20th century Satie became the godfather of minimalism and of SAT postmodernism, being championed by many, including John SAT Cage. SAT SAT Tom visits some of Satie's favourite haunts in Paris and SAT endeavours to find the truth behind the colourful stories of SAT his eccentric life. At the Musée de Montmartre he discovers SAT Satie’s connections with visual artists in what was the art SAT studio of Satie’s lover, Suzanne Valadon, and at the Lapin SAT Agile he experiences the form of artistic cabaret as Satie SAT would have encountered it. SAT SAT With expert opinion from musicologists Caroline Potter and SAT Robert Orledge, pianist Pascal Rogé, composer Kurt SAT Schwertsik, stage director Danielle Matthieu-Bouillon, and SAT Satie enthusiast Alistair McGowan. Matthew looks at SAT music for "Imaginary films", music written for films that SAT don't exist and also scores for lost films. He interviews SAT Nick Phoenix and Thomas Bergersen from the production SAT company "Two Steps From Hell" about the new phenomenon of SAT "Epic Music" - a genre of orchestral music that has appeared SAT from their creation of music for film trailers, which is SAT often different from the music that features in the final SAT film. The Classic Score of the week is from "Gaslight", a SAT film that was nearly lost as Matthew explains. Join him on a journey of SUN imagination and insight, exploring how music works. SUN SUN Today's programme asks "What is it about Mozart" - how have SUN his life and music become the template for what a composer SUN should be - a child prodigy, a virtuoso, a cultural SUN monument, not to mention a confectionery industry... And is SUN there anything that we can say is uniquely "Mozartean" - SUN what makes his music so distinctive and why does it connect SUN so readily with audiences? Explore Mozart's music with Tom SUN and see what conclusions you come to. SUN SUN Each week, Tom aims to open our ears to different ways of SUN imagining a musical idea, a work, or a musical conundrum, on SUN the premise that "to listen" is a decidedly active verb. SUN SUN How does music connect with us, make us feel that gamut of SUN sensations from the fiercely passionate to the rationally SUN intellectual, from the expressively poetic to the SUN overwhelmingly visceral? What's happening in the pieces we SUN love that takes us on that emotional rollercoaster? And SUN what's going on in our brains when we hear them? SUN SUN When we listen - really listen - we're not just attending to SUN the way that songs, symphonies, and string quartets work as SUN collections of notes and melodies. We're also creating SUN meanings and connections that reverberate powerfully with SUN other worlds of ideas, of history and culture, as well as SUN the widest range of musical genres. We're engaging the world SUN with our ears. The Listening Service aims to help make those SUN connections, to listen actively. SUN SUN Tune in and rethink music, with The Listening Service.. Donald MON Macleod peels off the layers, starting with his legacy and MON his controversial Dadaist final works including Relâche. MON MON Erik Satie's existence was a self-consciously surreal one. MON He reinvented himself throughout his life, rather like a MON proto-David Bowie, changing his clothing, his friends, his MON beliefs, and his music. Though he claimed not to want to, he MON influenced countless others, but he had a tendency to MON dramatically fall out with almost everyone he was close to. MON This week, marking the composer's 150th anniversary, Donald MON Macleod peels off the layers to examine Satie's life in MON reverse, beginning with his significant posthumous influence MON and working back to the early music which is still a MON household name. TUE TUE 12:00 Composer of the Week b07b2g3r (Listen) TUE Erik Satie (1866-1925), Original Surrealist TUE TUE Satie the Onion: his surreal life viewed in reverse. Donald TUE Macleod peels off the layers, examining the work which TUE earned Satie his own riot: the absurd ballet, Parade. TUE TUE Erik Satie's existence was a self-consciously surreal one. TUE He reinvented himself throughout his life, rather like a TUE proto-David Bowie, changing his clothing, his friends, his TUE beliefs, and his music. Though he claimed not to want to, he TUE influenced countless others, but he had a tendency to TUE dramatically fall out with almost everyone he was close to. TUE This week, marking the composer's 150th anniversary, Donald TUE Macleod peels off the layers to examine Satie's life in TUE reverse, beginning with his significant posthumous influence TUE and working back to the early music which is still a TUE household name. TUE TUE In 1920, Satie was at the height of his popularity, having TUE in the years since the first world war produced some of his TUE most sincere works. This may partly be due to a subconscious TUE liberation experienced at the death of his former friend TUE Debussy in 1918. Prior to that, still relishing his TUE involvement with Les Six, in 1917 he produced with Jean TUE Cocteau and Pablo Picasso the surreal masterpiece Parade, a TUE Diaghilev ballet from which the resulting riot nearly landed TUE the composer in jail. Donald WED Macleod peels off the layers, finding Satie's playfulness in WED full flow with works like his "Flabby Preludes for a Dog". WED WED Erik Satie's existence was a self-consciously surreal one. WED He reinvented himself throughout his life, rather like a WED proto-David Bowie, changing his clothing, his friends, his WED beliefs, and his music. Though he claimed not to want to, he WED influenced countless others, but he had a tendency to WED dramatically fall out with almost everyone he was close to. WED This week, marking the composer's 150th anniversary, Donald WED Macleod peels off the layers to examine Satie's life in WED reverse, beginning with his significant posthumous influence WED and working back to the early music which is still a WED household name. WED WED Prior to the first world war Satie, as yet not subject to WED the scrutiny of the fame he would later enjoy, wrote many WED series of provocative and humorous miniatures, principally WED for piano. Bizarrely titled and sometimes completely WED inexplicable, often they had a satirical purpose or a WED pointed personal message, such as the rather ungentle dig at WED his then friend Debussy intended by the "Flabby Preludes for WED a Dog". FRI FRI 09:00 Essential Classics b07b2fxy (Listen) FRI 9am FRI My favourite... Hollywood film scores. Rob takes a trip to FRI the cinema as he shares his favourite scores from the golden FRI age of Hollywood. The showreel includes classics such as Max FRI Steiner's soundtrack to Gone with the Wind and Erich FRI Korngold's The Sea Hawk, as well as Bernard Herrmann's FRI iconic shrieking strings accompaniment to Hitchcock's horror FRI movie Psycho. FRI FRI 9.30am FRI Take part in our daily musical challenge: identify a piece FRI of music played backwards. FRI FRI 10am FRI Rob's guest is the astronaut Helen Sharman. Helen Sharman FRI made history when she became the first Briton in space in FRI 1991. Helen's space mission came about after she heard a FRI radio advert for an astronaut whilst working as a research FRI chemist. She beat over 13,000 other applicants to become a FRI crew-member on the eight-day mission. Throughout the week FRI Helen will be reflecting on her trip into space twenty-five FRI years on, talking about life after the mission and sharing a FRI selection of her favourite classical music, including works FRI by Liszt and Haydn, and Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, which she FRI first saw during astronaut training in Russia. FRI FRI 10:30am FRI Rob places Music in Time as he explores the Romantic period FRI with Liszt's forward-looking Faust Symphony, which not only FRI fuses the symphonic and tone poem genres, but also includes FRI an early use of a twelve note row. FRI FRI 11am FRI Rob's artist of the week is the British pianist, Clifford FRI Curzon. A pupil of such distinguished figures as Artur FRI Schnabel, Wanda Landowska and Nadia Boulanger, Curzon was FRI praised for his grace and poise at the keyboard. He FRI specialised in music from the Classical and Romantic FRI periods, especially from the Austro-German tradition, and FRI this week, Rob features some of the pianist's most FRI celebrated recordings, including piano sonatas by Brahms and FRI Liszt, piano concertos by Mozart (K.488) and Beethoven (No. FRI 5 'Emperor) and Schubert's ever-popular 'Trout' Quintet. FRI FRI Brahms FRI Piano Sonata in F minor, Op. 5 FRI Clifford Curzon (piano). FRI FRI 12:00 Composer of the Week b07b2g3y (Listen) FRI Erik Satie (1866-1925), Mystic Cabaret FRI FRI Satie the Onion: his surreal life viewed in reverse. Donald FRI Macleod peels off the layers, reaching the core of mystic FRI spirituality and boozy nightlife - and timeless Gymnopédies. FRI FRI Erik Satie's existence was a self-consciously surreal one. FRI He reinvented himself throughout his life, rather like a FRI proto-David Bowie, changing his clothing, his friends, his FRI beliefs, and his music. Though he claimed not to want to, he FRI influenced countless others, but he had a tendency to FRI dramatically fall out with almost everyone he was close to. FRI This week, marking the composer's 150th anniversary, Donald FRI Macleod peels off the layers to examine Satie's life in FRI reverse, beginning with his significant posthumous influence FRI and working back to the early music which is still a FRI household name. FRI FRI Reaching back to the 1880s and 90s Donald unpicks the core FRI of Satie's inspirations: a curious mixture of highly FRI mystical spirituality and rather earthy cabaret. Satie was FRI happy to combine both, writing music for his own church of FRI Jesus Christ the Conductor by day and consuming large FRI quantities of absinthe as a pianist in the legendary Black FRI Cat Café by night. The contradictory qualities of Satie all FRI come together in his earliest and most celebrated work: the FRI Gymnopédies.
