SAT SAT Daniel Kramer – English National Opera SAT SAT Tom Service talks to English National Opera's new Artistic SAT Director, the award-winning American opera and theatre SAT director Daniel Kramer, who's about to stage Wagner's SAT Tristan and Isolde at the Coliseum. He sees the piece as a SAT ritual of lovers, and apart from sharing his views on the SAT piece, Kramer speaks about his collaboration with artist SAT Anish Kapoor, who’s designed the set on this production. SAT Also, Kramer talks candidly about the challenges he’s taking SAT on as Artistic Director at a time when has faced SAT unprecedented cuts from the Arts Council of England, has SAT seen the resignation of its Chief Executive and its Music SAT Director, as well as threats of strikes by the chorus. Let’s SAT go back to basics, says Kramer, who’d like to concentrate on SAT the core repertoire of opera, emphasising the theatricality SAT that has always distinguished ENO’s aesthetics. SAT SAT Yannick Nézet-Séguin appointed to The Met - Reaction SAT SAT As news of the appointment at the Metropolitan Opera House SAT in New York of 41-year old French Canadian conductor Yannick SAT Nézet-Séguin as its new Music Director is announced, we get SAT the reaction of Hugh Canning, Chief Music Critic of The SAT Sunday Times. Is Nézet-Séguin the proper person to replace SAT maestro James Levine, who’s been at the post for more than SAT four decades? What would he bring to The Met, beyond core SAT repertoire? What kind of opera house would The Met be under SAT his tenure? SAT SAT ‘Sounds and Sweet Airs – The Forgotten Women of Classical SAT Music’: Anna Beer SAT SAT Tom interviews cultural historian Anna Beer, author of the SAT new book 'Sounds and Sweet Airs: the Forgotten Women of SAT Classical Music', which includes eight composers, among them SAT Francesca Caccini, Clara Schumann, Fanny Mendelssohn and SAT Elizabeth Maconchy, all remarkably talented artists who’ve SAT left a fascinating body of work – some of which has made it SAT into the mainstream, some of which is yet to be fully SAT appreciated. Beer discusses how institutional sexism has SAT been responsible for denying opportunities to women who had SAT wanted to compose, and how female composers have needed to SAT be recognised as women first in society, before their role SAT of composers could be acknowledged. SAT SAT SOAPBOX: James Rhodes SAT SAT Pianist James Rhodes takes to our Soapbox, a space in which SAT performers, composers, and musical thinkers discuss pressing SAT matters in today’s music world. He takes this opportunity to SAT encourage amateur musicians to play an instrument. He SAT stresses the benefits of performing music, even if it’s for SAT the benefit of yourself alone, and singles out the lack of SAT playing an instrument as a particular malaise of the modern, SAT hectic world in which we live today. Everyone can play an SAT instrument, says Rhodes. All you need is some time and the SAT will to do it, insisting also that in doing so we open a SAT wonderful window into our inner world.
