The Hundred Years SAT War began with Edward; he undertook a huge programme of SAT castle building; and besides many other things, established SAT the Order of the Garter. This was the age when the English SAT language started to become the nation's lingua franca; it is SAT the age of The Green Knight; Piers Plowman; and Geoffrey SAT Chaucer. SAT SAT Lucie meets historian Ian Mortimer, an authority of the 14th SAT century and Edward's biographer, to learn more about this SAT period, and she reflects on the Englishness of the music of SAT his age. SUN SUN 22:15 Words and Music b00swh1j (Listen) SUN Clowns SUN SUN Clowns, hiding behind masks, are mysterious constructs that SUN evoke an array of emotions: from laughter to tears, SUN happiness to fear, and wonder to pity. Clowns are seen as SUN solitary, innocent, terrifying, malevolent and sometimes SUN even evil. SUN SUN On the first Sunday of every February, the National Clowns’ SUN Church (Holy Trinity Church in Dalston, East London) hosts SUN Clowns International for their annual service to celebrate SUN the life of Joseph Grimaldi, considered to the most famous SUN English Clown. The parade of clowns in their SUN brightly-coloured costumes and many guises attracts a crowd, SUN particularly of children. SUN SUN This edition of Words and Music begins with a homage to SUN Joseph Grimaldi that is inspired by the annual service in SUN Dalston. Alison Steadman and Andrew Sachs read stanzas SUN from an ode to Grimaldi by Thomas Hood over Stravinsky’s SUN Circus Polka arranged for organ. SUN SUN Then enter an array of other clowns: Verlaine's Parisian SUN circus clown, the foolish country clowns of John Clare and SUN Henry Parrot, Simon Armitage's Clown Punk, Shel SUN Silverstein's tearful, unfunny 'Cloony the Clown', Eve SUN Merriem’s Veep – Vice President – clown from the Nixon Poems SUN and Heinrich Boll's naive clown in the confusion of post-war SUN Germany. SUN SUN The traditional figures of the Commedia dell'Arte - Pierrot, SUN Harlequin, Columbine and Pantalon - also begin to emerge SUN from the beginning of the programme and are characterized in SUN Schumann's Carnaval, Op.9. Accompanying each of Schumann’s SUN characterization is an Aesop fable in which the idea of a SUN ‘clown’ as foolish is used to relay morals. The Commedia SUN dell’Arte figures are also characterized by Bantock in his SUN Pierrot of the Minute, Reger’s Pierrot and Pierrette, plus SUN Telemann's Columbine from Ouverture Burlesque. SUN SUN In the middle of the programme, the 'Clowns' Prayer' SUN recreates the central part of the Grimaldi Service and is SUN accompanied by Britten's Village Organist's Piece. The SUN darker side of clowns is then revealed through Stephen SUN King's 'It' with Respighi's horrifying depiction of death in SUN the Roman circus (Feste romane), Shakespeare's clown SUN gravediggers from Hamlet, who joke morbidly over Charlie SUN Chaplin's 'Clown's Last Crazy Act', and Betsy Sholl's SUN ghostly 'saddest man in the world'. MON MON In this week's Composer Of The Week, Donald Macleod explores MON Mahler's early years - from his humble birth in the Bohemian MON backwater of Kaliste to his triumphant installation as MON Director of the Vienna Opera at the age of 37. MON MON Mahler's early years are often skipped over by biographers MON keen to feast on the juicy details of his tempestuous last MON decade...yet it was in this formative period that the MON composer wrote some of his very finest works, including his MON gargantuan, brilliantly original first four symphonies and a MON veritable plethora of solo songs. MON MON Linking this week's episodes is a focus on the influence of MON "Des Knaben Wunderhorn" - an anthology of German folk poetry MON collected by Gottfried von Arnim and Clemens Brentano that MON obsessed Mahler throughout his youth. Donald Macleod MON introduces a host of songs written to texts from the MON anthology, including all ten set by the composer in his MON collection entitled "Lieder aus 'Des Knaben Wunderhorn'" - MON as well as a number of rare early songs inspired by the poems. MON MON Donald Macleod also explores the voluminous textual and MON musical links between Mahler's symphonies and the Wunderhorn MON poetry; we'll hear extended excerpts from the first three, MON and on Friday a complete performance of the apotheosis of MON his early period, his serene Fourth Symphony. MON MON In the first of this week's exploration of Mahler's MON "Wunderhorn" period, Donald Macleod looks at the composer's MON childhood and earliest works, including a rare Piano Quartet MON movement, and his extraordinary cantata "Das Klagende Lied". MON MON 22:00 Composer of the Week b00swh4q (Listen) MON [Repeat of broadcast at 12:00 today] MON MON 23:00 The Essay b00jdj0n (Listen) MON A Good Death, Mary Beard MON MON Death is the one subject we shy away from, and in our MON frantic obsession with prolonging our lives, the notion of MON 'a good death' seems to have lost its relevance. Yet 'the MON art of dying' has been a defining notion throughout history. MON Mary Beard, Professor of Classics at Cambridge, explains how MON the Romans and Greeks approached death and asks whether MON scenes of showmanship, famous last words, and stoical MON endings really can help us when we come to face our own MON inevitable demise. MON MON In these five frank and powerful essays, writers and MON thinkers ponder the art of dying, and confront taboos around MON death. They will look at what makes a 'good death' today - MON is it merely having lived a good life, or is there something MON intrinsically important in dying well? And, now that our MON deaths tend to occur in the sterile surroundings of a MON hospital ward rather than at home surrounded by those we MON love, they will reflect on how this distancing from death, MON and loss of control over our demise, has changed our MON relationship with dying. With references to the portrayal of MON death in literature, history and religion, as well as MON personal reflections on hopes and expectations of death, MON these essays will give five very different perspectives on MON the art of dying. Yet, the TUE art of dying has been a defining notion throughout history. TUE In this throught-provoking essay distinguished writer Beryl TUE Bainbridge looks back at how the notion of death has TUE overshadowed her own life, from her wartime childhood to her TUE adult brush with death, and reveals her hopes and TUE expectations for her own demise. TUE TUE In these five frank and powerful essays, writers and TUE thinkers ponder the art of dying, and confront taboos around TUE death. They will look at what makes a 'good death' today - TUE is it merely having lived a good life, or is there something TUE intrinsically important in dying well? And, now that our own TUE deaths tend to occur in the sterile surroundings of a TUE hospital ward, rather than at home surrounded by those we TUE love, will reflect on how this distancing from death, and TUE loss of control over our demise, has changed our TUE relationship with dying. With references to the portrayal of TUE death in literature, history and religion, as well as TUE personal reflections on hopes and expectations of death, TUE these essays will give five very different perspectives on TUE the art of dying. Yet 'the THU art of dying' has been a defining notion throughout history. THU Rabbi Julia Neuberger, reflecting on her own work with the THU dying, looks as how those of different faiths, or no faith THU at all, approach death, and at why we should all be planning THU for the kind of death we want.
