SAT SAT Since his early recitals as a child prodigy and his official SAT debut at Cheltenham aged thirteen, Bream performed SAT extensively for over five decades before retiring from the SAT concert stage in 2002. Throughout his career he was also SAT regularly on television – performing, presenting master SAT classes and documentary series, and appearing on chat shows. SAT He commissioned eminent composers such as Britten, Berkeley SAT and Tippett to write for him and, as a lutenist, introduced SAT audiences to early music. SAT SAT Julian reflects on the days when he was one of Britain’s SAT most recognised musicians and tells Petroc about his new SAT charitable trust, set up to support exceptionally gifted SAT young guitarists and to commission more new music for the SAT instrument. SAT SAT Music and Sentiment SAT SAT The acclaimed American pianist Charles Rosen has been a SAT significant figure in popular musicology since the SAT publication almost forty years ago of ‘The Classical Style’. SAT Now in his early eighties his latest book, ‘Music and SAT Sentiment’, analyzes the impact of emotion and sentiment in SAT the composition, performance, and appreciation of music. SAT SAT Petroc is joined by Nicholas Kenyon, Managing Director of SAT the Barbican centre, and writer Nigel Simeone to discuss SAT ‘Music and Sentiment’ and Rosen’s extensive contribution to SAT musicology. SAT SAT The Miners’ Hymns SAT SAT The rich heritage of coal mining and brass banding in North SAT East England is evident in the annual Durham Miners Gala SAT which takes place this Saturday. Since the dramatic decline SAT of the mining industry, the day is now primarily a wider SAT trade union event but remains one of Europe’s largest SAT political gatherings. Music is still central to the gala SAT with numerous brass bands marching behind the silk colliery SAT banners. SAT SAT As part of the Durham Brass Festival ‘The Miners’ Hymns’, a SAT new film paying homage to the industry, is also being SAT screened this week with a live brass musical score. SAT SAT Petroc talks to the film maker Bill Morrison and the SAT composer Jóhann Jóhannsson about their collaboration. And we SAT travel to Durham to visit the NASUWT Riverside band in SAT rehearsal, and meet Alan Hope who explains the history and SAT significance of brass bands to the Gala. SAT SAT French Opera SAT SAT A new book by the musicologist Vincent Giroud charts the SAT history of French opera from its origins to the present day. SAT Despite being second only to Italian opera in its breadth SAT and diversity, only a handful of French operas are widely SAT performed and well known. SAT SAT Petroc talks to the author about why French opera is not SAT more prominent in today’s repertoire, and is joined by SAT Cormac Newark and Sarah Hibberd to review the book. SAT SAT 13:00 The Early Music Show b00swpng (Listen) SAT York Early Music Festival 2010 SAT SAT Catherine Bott focuses on events at this year's York Early SAT Music Festival in a live show of performance and chat from SAT the National Centre for Early Music. SAT SAT 14:00 Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert b00swh5n (Listen) SAT Leila Josefowicz, John Novacek SAT SAT Today's Lunchtime Concert from Wigmore Hall features the SAT brilliant young American violinist Leila Josefowicz with SAT pianist John Novacek. They perform Shostakovich's late great SAT Violin Sonata, written for his friend David Oistrakh, and SAT encompassing a variety of influences including Bach, SAT Klezmer, and 12 tone music. This is followed by Schubert's SAT sparkling Rondo Brillant. SAT SAT Shostakovich: Violin Sonata Op.134 SAT Schubert: Rondo Brillant in B minor, D895 SAT SAT Leila Josefowicz (violin) SAT John Novacek (piano). SAT SAT 15:00 World Routes b00swpnj (Listen) SAT Ladysmith Black Mambazo SAT SAT Ladysmith Black Mambazo in South Africa: in a rare World Cup SAT vuvuzela-free zone, Africa's most famous group go back to SAT their roots in this special concert in a Zulu workers' SAT hostel in Clermont Township. Lopa Kothari introduces the SAT perfect antidote, as well as the perfect preparation, for SAT tomorrow's World Cup Final. SAT SAT The distinctive musical style of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, SAT called 'isicathamiya', originated in the Zulu workers' SAT hostels in the townships around Durban, where migrant SAT workers entertained each other with traditional music SAT toned-down so it wouldn't disturb the neighbours. Ladysmith SAT Black Mambazo were so good at it, they were banned from SAT taking part in local music competitions, and after their SAT participation in Paul Simon's album 'Graceland' in 1986, SAT their success became worldwide. This concert was recorded on SAT the evening of one of South Africa's World Cup matches - the SAT workers came together to watch the game on a big screen, SAT then settled down to enjoy a group who has had somewhat SAT better success internationally than the Bafana. But don't SAT expect the polite, restrained listening and warm applause of SAT a European concert hall audience: feelings were high, the SAT atmosphere was hot. SAT SAT Ladysmith Black Mambazo was founded by Joseph Shabalala, and SAT the programme also includes a session with the band of one SAT of his sons, Shabalala Rhythm, a huge local success in their SAT own right. As for the vuvuzelas, well there are inevitably SAT one or too - but for the most part, be assured indeed of a SAT vuvuzela-free zone. SUN SUN 21:30 Sunday Feature b00swq96 (Listen) SUN Goethe's Oak SUN SUN August 1944, a tree burns in Buchenwald concentration camp. SUN Goethe's Oak is on fire, hit by a stray incendiary bomb. To SUN some of the prisoners in this wretched place its final SUN moments were prophetic. Surely the days of the Nazi Reich SUN must be numbered now. Christopher Cook pieces together the SUN complex story of a symbol and a place. SUN SUN Goethe's Oak, 'the Fat Oak', with its wizened and gnarled SUN trunk became a powerful symbol for those imprisoned in the SUN camp at Buchenwald. Supposedly, this was the very tree where SUN Goethe had once sat with his lover and contemplated the SUN beauty of the woods and the world around him, where he wrote SUN poetry too. The woods at Ettersberg that surround the oak SUN are just a short walk from the town of Weimar where Goethe SUN had made his home and his reputation as one of the great SUN thinkers of the age. Presiding over a new classical age in SUN Germany, a country still in its infancy, Goethe helped to SUN define a new German identity. SUN SUN The National Socialists also loved Weimar. The Hitler Youth SUN were founded nearby; Hitler stayed there frequently and SUN spoke at public rallies. Then in 1937, the S.S. decided to SUN carve out a concentration camp in the woods up on the SUN Ettersberg. First it was named for the Ettersberg itself. SUN But the community in Weimar, many of them National SUN Socialists, were uneasy about the name with its close SUN associations with the life and achievements of Goethe. So SUN the beech woods themselves gave the camp its new name of SUN Buchenwald. SUN SUN 'Goethe's Oak' became the sole tree standing in the camp. SUN For those able to steal a few free moments from their SUN punishing 14-16 hours work detail it offered precious shade. SUN And this single oak tree became a potent symbol for the SUN prisoners of the other Germany, the Germany of Goethe, SUN Schiller and the poet Wieland. A place of dignity where men SUN might be free. But the oak was already dying, its roots were SUN starved of water. By August 1944 the oak's branches were SUN bare and bleached. SUN SUN An Allied bombing raid of the surrounding armaments factory SUN accidentally reduced 'Goethe's Oak' to a charred stump. Its SUN destruction was for some a certain omen that the Reich would SUN soon fall. In secret a fragment of the charred wood was SUN smuggled away and carved into a sculpture. Black, smoky oak SUN rendered into a death mask to symbolize the 51,000 prisoners SUN who had died in Buchenwald. And Bruno Apitz, the man who SUN fashioned this sculpture, the so-called 'Last Face', would SUN in time create one of the most powerful stories about SUN Buchenwald around the heroic Communist uprising in the SUN camp's last days. The so-called uprising in the final days SUN of the camp and the actions of the Communist underground SUN within Buchenwald, both heavily mythologized, became central SUN to the identity of the newly Communist East Germany. SUN SUN Now, twenty years after the end of East Germany and SUN sixty-five years after the American army liberated SUN Buchenwald, the many meanings of both tree and camp continue SUN to occupy survivors, historians and perhaps Germany itself. SUN Christopher Cook walks from Weimar and through the gates of SUN Buchenwald to a place where history collides with myth. SUN SUN Producer: Mark Burman. SUN SUN 22:15 Words and Music b00gh4h1 (Listen) SUN Through the Looking Glass SUN SUN This edition takes the theme of mirrors and reflections with SUN readings by Sir Derek Jacobi and Lesley Manville. SUN SUN The poetry and prose I have chosen show the mirror as a SUN symbol of vanity, self-examination and the limits of human SUN understanding. SUN SUN I started with the object of the mirror with Amy Lowell's SUN poem and Arvo Part's haunting Spiegel im Spiegel. There are SUN several readings from Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking SUN Glass and what Alice found there. Lesley Manville, played SUN Alice at the Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith during the 80s. SUN Derek Jacobi brings Alice's topsy-turvy world to life in his SUN reading of the poem Jabberwocky. SUN SUN A darker vein runs through Ted Hughes' re-telling of Ovid's SUN myth of Narcissus where his fate is sealed when he becomes SUN entranced by his own reflection in a pool, leading to SUN Szymanowski's seductive myths and Brain Eno's plateaux of SUN mirror. Ann Sexton's poem about Snow White gives a modern SUN twist to the "Mirror, mirror on the wall" and leads to the SUN modern jazz improvisation of Dave Douglas. SUN SUN Darker still with Walt Whitman's A Handmirror with the SUN radiophonic piece Veils and Mirrors, Sylvia Plath's bleak SUN poem Mirror and Jorge Luis Borges's fear of mirrors. SUN SUN I end with a mirror fugue from Bach's Art of Fugue and the SUN passage from 1 Corinthians about self-knowledge "For now we SUN see through a glass, darkly, but then face to face:" SUN SUN Producer: Jessica Isaacs. This rumour of murder has travelled MON over two hundred years, inspiring verse by Alexander MON Pushkin, an opera by Rimsky-Korsakov, to Peter Shaffer's MON film "Amadeus". But is it right that this once highly MON celebrated composer should be remembered for an MON unsubstantiated rumour? Salieri was at one time the most MON famous composer in all Europe, with the Holy Roman Emperor MON Joseph II as his patron. He received offers of work from the MON King of Sweden, and even dedicated one of his works to Marie MON Antoinette. He composed over forty operas, including a work MON premiered for the official opening in Milan of La Scala MON opera house. Amongst Salieri's students, which he always MON taught for free unless they came from wealthy backgrounds, MON were Beethoven, Schubert, Liszt and even Mozart's son Franz MON Xaver. MON MON In the first programme, Donald Macleod looks at Salieri's MON formative years, including the loss of his parents early on, MON and the miracle when he was discovered by the composer MON Florian Leopold Gassmann, and taken from Venice to Vienna. MON We hear a specially made recording by the BBC Singers of the MON Missa stylo a cappella, documented as being one of Salieri's MON first compositions - and one which was never performed in MON the composer's lifetime. MON MON 400 years after his death in July 1610 these portraits of MON the painter offer a series of personal responses to his MON work, life and legacy. The first is delivered by John Gash, MON Senior Lecturer in the History of Art at Aberdeen MON University, who introduces the artist, and argues that an MON existential edge sustained Caravaggio as his technical and MON creative virtuosity developed. His techniques of painting MON direct to canvas, and of employing chiaroscuro, contrasts of MON light and shade, were revolutionary procedures that MON demonstrate a ceaseless quest for clarity and honesty. MON MON When Caravaggio moves from northern Italy to seek patronage MON and fame in Rome, the celebrity he attracts there is MON entwined with visceral and violent behaviour, which itself MON is then replicated in aspects of his work that depict sacred MON Christian subjects. The grand religious commissions such as MON The Martyrdom of St. Matthew negotiate a dangerous boundary MON between fulfilling the Counter Reformation ideals of the MON Roman Catholic Church and offending its sense of decorum. FRI FRI 20:00 BBC Proms b00swrrh (Listen) FRI 2010, Prom 01: Mahler - Symphony No. 8 FRI (Symphony of a Thousand) FRI FRI Live from the Royal Albert Hall, London. FRI FRI Mahler's spectacular 'Symphony of a Thousand' launches the FRI 2010 BBC Proms. "Try to imagine the whole universe beginning FRI to ring and resound. There are no longer human voices, but FRI planets and suns revolving." So Mahler described his Eighth FRI Symphony, which tonight 100 years after its premiere and 150 FRI years after the composer's birth, will raise the roof of the FRI Royal Albert Hall. FRI FRI Setting a hymn to the divine creative spirit alongside words FRI from the closing scene of Goethe's Faust the symphony FRI expresses the idea of redemption through the power of love. FRI To do this Mahler uses huge forces: eight vocal soloists, a FRI large orchestra and massed adult and children's choirs, FRI tonight including choristers from three of London's great FRI cathedrals, and choirs from Crouch End to Sydney including FRI the BBC's own Symphony Chorus. FRI FRI It's a celebratory start to two months of music making at FRI the world's greatest music festival and a tribute to the FRI Proms founder and conductor - Sir Henry Wood - who gave the FRI work its UK premiere 80 years ago. Renowned in his own time for the innovative and FRI shocking realism of his paintings, often celebrated nowadays FRI for the tempestuous lifestyle which informed his work, he is FRI remembered as the creator of art that influenced and FRI inspired. 400 years after his death in July 1610 these FRI portraits of the painter offer a series of personal FRI responses to his work, life and legacy. FRI Tonight's essay is by Andrew Graham-Dixon, critic, FRI broadcaster, and author of a new biography of the artist. He FRI follows Caravaggio in the wake of the death of the pimp FRI Tomassoni, through the wandering years which took him to FRI Malta, where he became a Knight of St John, and then to FRI Sicily, and considers works in this later period, which FRI include David with the Head of Goliath and The Beheading of FRI St John. FRI FRI Caravaggio left the southern islands to pursue some northern FRI hopes of pardon and redemption, but these only delivered FRI death. Graham-Dixon reveals new evidence of how he died, FRI parted from his paintings, on a journey to Rome, but FRI Caravaggio's influence endured and spread throughout Europe FRI in the decades after his demise.
