SUN SUN Verdi composed this powerful drama for Venice between 1850 SUN and 1851, and while critics were initially a little SUN ambivalent, audiences immeadiately took the opera to their SUN hearts. Since that time it has never been out of the SUN repertory. It provides singers with some of the most SUN inspiring and challenging roles in Romantic opera, in a SUN piece that contains some of Verdi's most affecting; SUN best-loved and best-known music. SUN SUN Stephen Johnson focuses on the final act of the opera and SUN joins a cast of singers that includes Anthony Michaels-Moore SUN as Rigoletto; Laura Claycomb as Gilda; Madeleine Shaw as SUN Maddalena; David Soar as Sparafucile and Gwyn Hughes Jones SUN as the Duke; with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the BBC SUN Singers conducted by Andrew Litton; and opera Director SUN Graham Vick, for an examination of some of Verdi's musical SUN and theatrical achievements in this work that proved the SUN turning point in the career of one of the most significant SUN composers of the operatic genre. His son is still a young boy, the product of a SUN late flowering love. Ames knows he will never see his son SUN grow to be a man and, given that he owns nothing and lives SUN in a tied church house, all he can pass on is what he knows SUN and the life he has lived. So, the letter he writes to his SUN son is both a memoir of a life lived, and the journal of the SUN present in which it is being written. SUN The tale is set in the 1950s, but takes us back through SUN generations of preachers as far as the American Civil war, SUN and projects into a future in which we now live. SUN Into Ames's life comes Jack Boughton, (Elliot Cowan) the SUN wayward son of his best friend (Colin Stinton). Jack was SUN baptised by Ames, and named after him. He feels a particular SUN responsibility for this prodigal, but has never been able to SUN like him. A charmer, Jack appears to woo both Ames wife, SUN Lila (Elizabeth McGovern) and son John, and the old man SUN struggles with the feelings stirred by the younger man. Yet it has been home to an extraordinary school SUN of scholars and mystics who redefined Jewish faith and law SUN and attracts thousands of tourists, artists and modern-day SUN mystics. SUN SUN Among the towering figures from Safed's past is Isaac Luria, SUN known as 'the Lion', an Egyptian rabbi and master of the SUN mystical tradition of Kabbalah. His teachings were SUN disseminated after his death and have become central to the SUN Hassidic movement of Central Europe, which is growing ever SUN stronger in modern Judaism. Another revered rabbi is Joseph SUN Caro, known as 'The Master', a Spanish rabbi who became the SUN supreme legal authority of the Jewish world, ruling on SUN disputes brought to him from France to Turkey. He distilled SUN his learning into the Shulchan Aruch (Code of Jewish Law) SUN which remains the central text on the interpretation of SUN Jewish law. SUN SUN Safed today is home to just 30,000 people. Yet it is one of SUN the few places in Israel that has been continually occupied SUN by Jews since biblical times. The city's story mirrors that SUN of Israel's past as a whole. In the 1920s, Safed Jews were SUN massacred by local Arabs: in 1948 it was conquered by the SUN Palmach forces who forced out the Arab population. Among SUN those who left with their families was Mahmoud Abbas, now SUN president of the Palestinian Authority. SUN SUN The city proudly proclaims itself to be the world centre of SUN spirituality and Jewish culture. It is central to the SUN practice of Kabbalah or Jewish mysticism and home to SUN religious scholars and artists from all over the world. SUN Teenagers from Europe and America travel to Safed for a SUN particularly Jewish experience and hundreds of tourists SUN visit each day. Mayor Ilan Shohat was even dragged out of SUN bed earlier this year for a visit by the popular music star SUN Madonna, who has recently embraced Kabbalah. SUN SUN The Jewish commentator Clive Lawton explores Safed's streets SUN and alleyways arriving in time for Shabbat, the weekly SUN festival of the Sabbath, the glue that holds all Jews SUN together. He visits the synagogues and joins in the joyous SUN ceremonies, singing the famous love song to Shabbat known as SUN Lecha Dodi, which was written in Safed. He wanders among the SUN tombstones in the city's cemeteries and witnesses the ultra SUN orthodox venerating the rabbis who were drawn to the area so SUN long ago. SUN Producer: Mark Savage. TUE TUE She writes TUE "Banaras, 1967. Two men in shorts and singlets are sitting TUE on what looks like a raft. One man's toes are dipping into TUE the water that is all around them. He appears unaware of TUE this. The city seems empty but for these two people. Their TUE raft could be a doorstep, or maybe a tabletop. The water TUE lapping at its edges is floodwater. The rest of the city has TUE probably taken shelter in higher, drier places. But these TUE two men are oblivious to flood and exodus alike. They are TUE absorbed in a chess game that is halfway through, on a chess TUE board almost floating on their half-drowned step. TUE This photograph by Raghubir Singh captures many things, but TUE mainly the addictiveness of chess and the difficulty of TUE finding a quiet place for a game in a country as crowded as TUE India. That's superficial stuff. Below the WED surface, it's all deep, pure thought. In WED blindfolding himself, he was, I think, making it easier to WED win, not harder. WED WED Talk of code, and radio and chess embrace each other more WED tightly still. THU THU 21:15 Night Waves b00wfxwh (Listen) THU Free Thinking 2010, Has God Gone Global? THU THU Has God Gone Global? Philip Dodd chairs a public debate at THU BBC Radio 3's Free Thinking festival. THU THU Reports of its death have been vastly exaggerated: many now THU believe that in the 21st century religion is set to be the THU engine of world affairs in almost every corner of the globe. THU China has more Christians than Communist Party members. THU Protestantism is burgeoning in South America. The largest THU Pentacostal church in the world is in South Korea and the THU continent of Europe has 53 million Muslims - roughly the THU population of England. These numbers are all rising. THU THU Secular Europeans may not celebrate this religious revival THU but faith mobilises millions in a way that political THU movements no longer do. Politicians seeking to marginalise THU religious debate may find themselves irrelevant. Indeed, THU some claim that in the future, Europe may find its vaunted THU secularism to be its greatest weakness. THU THU Philip Dodd is joined by a panel of thinkers at the Sage THU Gateshead to discuss the impact global religion will have on THU future politics - for good or ill: THU THU David Holloway, vicar of Evangelical Jesmond Parish Church THU in Newcastle argues that Britain must reconnect with its THU Christian roots. THU THU The panel argue with passion and conviction about THU fundamentalist secularism, Sharia Law in Britain, THU homosexuality and the Anglican Church, Political Islam and THU religious violence. They also debate how increased global THU influence will pose problems both within and between the THU religions themselves. THU THU Producer: James Cook. What's more, when the queen THU did appear on the board, she was the weakest piece, and not THU the powerhouse she is today. I stumbled on these two facts THU when I was researching my book, A History of the Breast, and THU a museum curator showed me a small 14th century ivory figure THU of a Madonna and child, which he referred to as a chess THU queen. FRI FRI 19:35 Twenty Minutes b00wfy9s (Listen) FRI Among Animals and Plants FRI FRI Andrey Platonov is perhaps the greatest Russian writer to FRI have written of the worst years of Stalin's dictatorship. FRI Robert Chandler, his translator, introduces a major lost FRI talent. Platonov's novels (like The Foundation Pit) and FRI stories (like Among Animals and Plants) tell of a whole FRI country undergoing extraordinary changes. The impact of FRI revolutionary upheaval is registered by Platonov in his FRI remaking of the very language of his storytelling. In a FRI world where utopia was promised the masses as they toiled in FRI ghastly conditions in fear of what they thought let alone FRI what they said or did, language is set adrift. Platonov FRI noticed this and made stories from the terrfiying new world FRI that manage to sound as if the world itself had been started FRI again. 'Scum' Stalin wrote on the manuscript of one of FRI Platonov's stories and he near disappeared from view and FRI wasn't published properly in Russia until after the end of FRI the USSR. And only now is he arriving in English, but his is FRI a revelation worth waiting for. From the Tsar to the Black FRI Sea sanatoriums to the players of Abhasia. FRI FRI He writes: FRI "I was born as the era of Soviet Chess was drawing to a FRI close. In our family album there are photos of me at five FRI years old playing chess with my father and my Mother's FRI brother, uncle Boris, who was a police detective. For most FRI citizens the Soviet Union was not a great nuclear power, but FRI a great chess nation, where the names of the Soviet chess FRI masters were uttered in the same tone of awe and respect as FRI that of Yuri Gagarin. Of course the "deviant" champions, the FRI ones who fled to the west, were erased from the FRI encyclopedias and press reports. I did not know those names, FRI but for some reason I was convinced that chess was to be FRI played before bed, and changing into your pyjamas was an FRI essential part of the preparations. My pyjamas were stripy, FRI like prison clothes, but I only realized that years later, FRI when going through the family albums." FRI FRI Andrey Kurkov is the author of Death and the Penguin and FRI more recently The Good Angel of Death. He has a surreal, FRI slightly morbid sense of humour that is reflected in his FRI novels and this short essay on Chess in Russia.
