SAT SAT Plygain SAT SAT The carolling tradition of Plygain requires an early start – SAT in the 18th and 19th centuries villagers would welcome SAT Christmas Day with three-part songs sung at the local parish SAT church. These Plygain services began as early as 3am and SAT carried on till dawn, accompanied with seasonal food and drink. SAT SAT Tom finds out more about it in Bangor and meets Arfon Gwilym SAT who’s keeping the tradition alive. SAT SAT The Bangor Pontifical SAT SAT The Bangor Pontifical is an astonishing illuminated SAT manuscript that’s central to the history of North Wales. It SAT is the only complete liturgical manuscript known to survive SAT from the medieval diocese of Bangor, and one of just two SAT extant books from medieval Wales as a whole to contain SAT substantial plainchant notation. As well as texts and SAT detailed instructions for liturgical observances, the SAT manuscript contains a substantial corpus of plainchant, all SAT copied onto a four-line stave. SAT SAT Harps SAT SAT Regarded as the national instrument of Wales, the harp has SAT been used through the ages as an accompaniment to SAT folk-singing and dancing and also as a solo instrument. SAT SAT Tom travels to Cardiff and West Wales to discover harps SAT ancient and modern: meeting virtuoso Catrin Finch and, at SAT the Harp Centre in Llandysul, Allan Shiers, who’s revived SAT the traditions of harp-making. SAT SAT Brecon Orchestras SAT SAT The historic market town of Brecon is home to two of Wales’ SAT newest classical ensembles: Brecon Baroque and the Mid-Wales SAT Chamber Orchestra. SAT SAT Tom meets the leaders of both, violinists Rachel Podger and SAT Marcia Crayford, and talks to them about how they’re SAT knitting together landscape, community and family life to SAT create an intoxicating musical alchemy. SAT SAT The Morriston Orpheus Choir SAT SAT A leading exponent of male choral singing The Morriston SAT Orpheus Choir in Swansea has this year celebrated its 75th SAT anniversary. Founded in 1935 by Ivor E Sims it achieved its SAT first success at the Royal National Eisteddfod two years SAT later. Today the choir regularly tours abroad and appears on SAT television, but they still perform at venues throughout SAT Wales from chapels and village halls to Swansea's famous SAT Brangwyn Hall. SAT SAT Tom visits the choir in rehearsal as they perform Welsh SAT hymns and Christmas classics. SAT SAT 13:00 The Early Music Show b00wh2zk (Listen) SAT Opera Profiles, Rameau - Platee SAT SAT In the final monthly focus on a baroque opera, Lucie SAT Skeaping looks at Jean Philippe Rameau's comic masterpiece, SAT Platee. SAT SAT Rameau wrote the opera when he was in his sixties, for an SAT entertainment at a court wedding at Versailles. The story SAT tells of a foolish and ugly nymph who believes she is loved SAT by Jupiter. The sense of the absurd permeates Rameau's SAT score, with the composer and his librettist managing to SAT create a wonderfully imaginative and colourful piece which SAT turn many of the operatic conventions of the time on their SAT head. SAT SAT Rameau's contemporary Melchior Grimm considered the piece SAT "sublime" while for Jean Jacques Rousseau it was a "divine" SAT work. Even today it succeeds in firing the imaginations of SAT opera producers and conductors, not least the French SAT conductor Marc Minkowski who explains why in the programme. SUN SUN 21:30 Sunday Feature b00wh533 (Listen) SUN From King to Pawn SUN SUN Chess is known as the game of kings, but has an amazingly SUN wide and enduring appeal, it cuts across so much that can SUN divide us: age, class, nationality, race. It's a logical SUN game often played in an abstract, notated form, and yet the SUN fact that the pieces have characters and distinct roles SUN somehow catches our imagination. This personification causes SUN the game to be of interest even to those who don't play, SUN necessarily, and it's often been depicted in art and SUN fiction, many times as a metaphor. How does chess mirror life? SUN SUN The novelist and occasional chess player David Szalay SUN presents an examination of chess as an artistic metaphor in SUN literature and modern art, and how powerful personalities in SUN the game embodied the ideals and beliefs of their time. The SUN trajectory of the game itself has been from the palace to SUN the laptop, for the game is now most commonly played on SUN computers or the internet. MON MON 12:00 Composer of the Week b00wh652 (Listen) MON Bach in Cothen, Episode 1 MON MON Bach spent just six years in service at the court of Cothen. MON It wasn't even a prestigious posting, in fact the ruling MON prince's ineptitude with matters political meant it barely MON figured on the map. But for the greatest composer alive it MON was just the ticket, a chance to explore fresh musical MON ground, and open himself up to new styles of music-making. MON MON Not that it was all plain sailing. He might have loved the MON break from church music (gone was the grind of the Lutheran MON liturgy) but while away from court he suffered the greatest MON tragedy of his life, the death of his first wife. It was a MON hammer blow of course, but also turned out to be MON inspirational. Bach naturally turned to the needs of his MON many children, and it was while putting together teaching MON materials for them that he stumbled on some of his greatest MON musical ideas. New love came his way too, the talented MON singer Anna Magdalena, who became indispensable as copyist, MON musical collaborator, and cornerstone of his rapidly MON expanding family. MON MON But for all the support of his employer, Bach did suffer a MON persistent case of itchy feet in Cothen. First in Hamburg, MON then in Leipzig, he found himself navigating appointment MON processes which would trump the bureaucracy of even the most MON convoluted public processes today. Eventually he got an MON offer he couldn't refuse, but only after composing some of MON the most accomplished music of his entire career. THU THU Nominated for the Mercury music prize and twice winner of a THU MOBO award, Soweto Kinch is a saxophonist, composer, rapper THU and Oxford history graduate who was inspired to turn to jazz THU following a meeting with the trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. THU "He's number one in a field that he's made his own" says one THU leading jazz critic. THU THU Soweto's work has drawn on the lives of residents of a THU Birmingham tower block, he has set 1950's novel Absolute THU Beginners to music, and he's even remixed the voice of THU newsreader Moira Stewart. Now he shows his intellectual THU prowess as well. THU THU At Free Thinking Soweto delivers a lecture on the THU relationship between music and emancipation, arguing that THU music needs to reclaim its political meaning and power. With THU examples including Sonny Rollins "Freedom Suite", Charles THU Mingus "Fables of Faubus", and "Clampdown" by The Clash, he THU calls for artists to create music that changes society. He THU also tells presenter Rana Mitter why his parents named THU Soweto and why he agreed to join the backing band to The X THU Factor predecessor Pop Idol. THU THU Recorded in November front of an audience at the Sage THU Gateshead as part of the Free Thinking festival, in an event THU hosted by Rana Mitter. THU THU Producer: Tim Prosser. Gentle Mary meek and mild became an THU instrument of anti-semitic propaganda, the heroine of THU miracle tales about converting Jews, the emblem of THU Christianity triumphant against Judaism. It's a painful THU legacy which can make ecumenical rapprochement difficult. They were trying to both have their FRI cake and eat it on the Blessed Virgin Mary: they wanted to FRI be exponents of the new doctrine of sola scriptura (that the FRI Bible contains all knowledge necessary for salvation and FRI holiness), without jettisoning the Catholic understanding of FRI the creeds. Very important things that lay at the heart of FRI traditional Christianity could not be shown explicitly in FRI the Bible. One of those core beliefs was that of the FRI perpetual virginity of Mary. A few moments of scriptural FRI perusal can tell you that this is a knotty proposition, as FRI the Bible mentions Jesus's brothers and sisters, but to FRI throw overboard centuries of church tradition was just too FRI much for most Reformers. Professor Diarmaid MacCulloch, FRI author of the award-winning book, 'A History of FRI Christianity' shows how this seemingly abstruse matter of FRI doctrine actually opens a window onto the psyche of FRI Reformers and their relationship with Mary.
