SAT Many regarded him as reclusive and remote, bordering on SAT unapproachable. In 1989 Charles Barber, a conducting student SAT (and now the artistic director of City Opera Vancouver), SAT wrote a letter to Kleiber and an unusual thing occurred: the SAT world-renowned conductor replied! Thus began a fifteen year SAT correspondence and friendship by post. Tom Service talks to SAT Barber, who has now written the first English-language SAT biography of Kleiber and finds out how funny, SAT self-deprecating and modest the conductor was in the way he SAT thought of his profession. Barber also repudiates the myths SAT that surround Kleiber’s genius and reflects on his SAT contribution to modern musical performance. SAT SAT Peter Gelb and The Metropolitan Opera SAT SAT Peter Gelb became the General Manager of the Metropolitan SAT Opera in New York in 2006 and is seen by many as a SAT controversial figure. Like many arts administrators he has SAT had to deal with the world economic meltdown, the demands of SAT finding and sustaining new audiences and has now begun to SAT change the Met’s conservative theatrical style. Tom meets SAT Gelb and hears how he has found more cash rather than less SAT year on year to support this almost totally privately funded SAT opera house, made a commercial success of getting opera onto SAT cinema screens and lowered the age of the audience in the SAT theatre itself. Gelb also talks about the challenges ahead, SAT today’s singers and the quiet revolution he is leading in SAT production values. SAT SAT The Rake’s Progress SAT SAT Scottish Opera’s new production of The Rake’s Progress opens SAT on the 17th March. Tom takes a closer look at Stravinsky’s SAT biggest single piece - based on a series of prints by SAT Hogarth, and with a libretto by WH Auden and Chester SAT Kallman, Stravinsky sets their text in a musical universe SAT inspired by Monteverdi, Mozart, Donizetti and Verdi. SAT Stravinsky scholar Jonathan Cross and Sian Edwards, SAT conductor of Scottish Opera’s production, assess what lies SAT behind Stravinsky’s musical mask – finding a deep musical SAT and emotional truth. SAT SAT This production of The Rake’s Progress will be broadcast on SAT BBC Radio 3 in September 2012 SAT SAT Miss Fortune SAT SAT Judith Weir’s new opera Miss Fortune opened at the Bregenz SAT Festival last year and on Monday receives its UK premiere by SAT the Royal Opera. The story tells of how Tina, the daughter SAT of a rich family, turns her back on wealth to make her own SAT way in the world – too often with unfortunate results. Tom SAT goes along to rehearsals and meets the soprano Emma Bell and SAT counter-tenor Andrew Watts who are singing the lead roles of SAT Tina and Fate and talks to composer Judith Weir about how, SAT in her own libretto, she has updated this Sicilian folktale SAT to a world of economic collapse and penury - and what part SAT fate plays in all our lives. It is that idea which I have set out to SUN explore in this edition of Words and Music: haunting can SUN mean a visitation from the supernatural but it can also mean SUN the eerie return of a memory or an episode from the past. We SUN begin somewhere in the middle of these definitions with the SUN ‘Dies irae’ from Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique’, a piece SUN which deals with witches’ sabbaths but also with a recurring SUN vision of ideal femininity. Berlioz sought to paint a SUN musical picture of his own romantic infatuation – and that SUN impulse haunts each movement of the piece. Against this SUN menacing musical backdrop we hear perhaps the most famous SUN theatrical response to a ghostly visitation: Hamlet’s SUN avowals of vengeance after his father’s appearance from SUN beyond the grave. In Thomas Hardy’s ‘The Haunter’ and Toni SUN Morrison’s ‘Beloved’ we get a glimpse of the world from the SUN haunter’s perspective – with voices trapped behind an SUN invisible other worldly screen. Debussy’s ‘Syrinx’ provides SUN the ideal counterpoint for ‘The Haunter’’s ethereal SUN presence, hovering unnoticed on the peripheries of the SUN living world. Leontia Flynn’s ‘The Exorcism’ is rooted SUN firmly in the land of the living – with the poet haunted by SUN nothing more ghostly than her past self. An extract from SUN Benjamin Britten’s ‘Death in Venice’ sees the human voice SUN being used to hair-raising effect. Britten’s anti-hero SUN Aschenbach’s sexual obsession with a beautiful young boy has SUN seen him reduced to a wraith-like figure, haunting the SUN labyrinthine streets of Venice in pursuit of his forbidden SUN beloved. We finish with a homage of sorts to the master of SUN hauntings in poetry and prose: Edgar Allen Poe. In SUN Ginsberg’s ‘Haunting Poe’s Baltimore’ we enter the SUN subterranean realm of Poe’s grave, to the ambient strains of SUN Miles Davis. We then finish our journey under the spectral SUN eye of Poe himself, with his poem ‘The Haunted Palace’, SUN where Berlioz again provides the soundtrack for a final SUN twirl around a ghostly ballroom. SUN SUN 19:45 Sunday Feature b01d0w2t (Listen) SUN Swansea's Other Poet SUN SUN The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Rowan Williams presents a SUN portrait of Vernon Watkins, a poet he regards as one of the SUN twentieth century's most brilliant and distinctive - and SUN unjustly neglected voices. SUN SUN At the time of his death in 1967, it's likely Watkins was in SUN line to succeed John Masefield as Poet Laureate. Kathleen SUN Raine believed Watkins to be "the greatest lyric poet of her SUN generation"; T.S. Eliot and Philip Larkin were also SUN admirers. Dylan Thomas was of the opinion that Watkins was SUN "the only poet whose poetry I really like today". Given such SUN appreciation, the reason why Watkins' poetry slipped quietly SUN into the shadows is something of a mystery. SUN SUN It may be due, at least in part, to his association with SUN Dylan Thomas. Two Welsh poets, writing in English, they SUN first met in 1935, soon after the publication of Thomas's SUN first collection of poetry. Generous in spirit, Watkins SUN immediately recognised Thomas's genius and he never deviated SUN from that opinion. They quickly became friends, meeting up SUN regularly at Watkins' home on the Gower cliffs, both SUN absorbed in the craft of writing poetry. It was through SUN Thomas that Watkins became associated with the artists, SUN musicians and writers, among them Alfred Janes and Daniel SUN Jones, who socialised at the Kardomah Café in Swansea. The SUN number of poems Watkins wrote about Thomas leaves no doubt SUN as to the presence Thomas had in his life, but aside from a SUN shared Welsh heritage and a passionate love of language, SUN there are relatively few points of comparison between them. SUN Temperamentally dissimilar, Watkins preferred a regular SUN existence, while Thomas lived life far more precariously. SUN Their working methods too were different. Watkins was to say SUN that while Thomas worked with what he called living language SUN and "moulded" his poems, his own poetry was written "from SUN the ear and for the ear" with an innate sense of musicality. SUN SUN A master craftsman, Watkins devoted a lifetime to poetry, SUN writing in every known form, from free verse to sonnets and SUN ballads. Generally his poems would be the result of long SUN gestation periods, refined and revised frequently over a SUN year or more. At the time of his death he'd already SUN published several volumes of poetry for Faber, the SUN pre-eminent publisher of the period; posthumously that SUN number doubled. He plied his craft daily, working on his SUN poems after a day spent working as a cashier in a bank. In SUN the evening, momentarily leaving behind the demands of a SUN wife and five children, he could be seen walking along the SUN limestone cliffs of South Gower, where he lived, looking for SUN material to ignite his imagination. Despite being a keen SUN observer of the natural world, he never regarded himself as SUN a nature poet, rather he saw himself as a religious and SUN metaphysical poet, always looking behind the surface, SUN towards an inner world, beyond time. As he says in his poem, SUN The Razor Shell, "do not interpret me too soon". In the second essay TUE Howard Zhang of the BBC's Chinese Service, considers the way TUE that mountains in China have been sacred to Buddhism, Taoism TUE and Confucianism - sometimes the same mountain revered by TUE devotees of all three. Certain mountains are places of TUE pilgrimage, the Chinese word for which literally means TUE 'paying respect to the mountain', and many monasteries and TUE shrines are hidden away in the hills. TUE TUE Howard explains the attraction of mountains, throughout TUE Chinese history, to poets and artists - an attraction so TUE deep that landscape paintings are known simply as mountain TUE and river pictures - and intellectuals, who have been drawn TUE from the complex life of the city to a simple, quiet life in TUE the mountains. TUE TUE But many Chinese are newly rich, able at last and eager, to TUE travel. The holy mountains are becoming places of mass TUE tourism. Howard Zhang contemplates this dilemma and TUE considers the meanings of mountains to the Chinese today. TUE TUE Producer: Julian May. THU Kenneth Steven's father was a lifelong climber, who reached THU the summit of his last 'Monroe' (Scottish mountains more THU than 3,000 high) when he was 89. But as a boy of eight or THU nine Kenneth was dragged up hills at every opportunity and THU resented these exhausting, thirsty excursions. He rather THU shared the view of the crofters that the hills were just THU there and to climb them without having to was puzzling. It THU was only when he left Perthshire for university in Glasgow THU that he missed their presence and began to share the love THU that writers such as the great Gaelic poet Sorley MacLean THU and Norman MacCaig expressed in their work. He returned to THU the highlands and ventured, now voluntarily, into the hills. THU But he is not concerned with conquering them; it is in the THU journey up and what he finds along the way that the THU mountains reveal their many meanings. THU THU Producer: Julian May. Javier Lizarzaburu, a journalist living FRI in Lima, considers how the shrine at Pariacaca, the mountain FRI home of an important Inca oracle, was suppressed by Jesuits FRI 400 years ago, with the destruction of thousands of images FRI and the exile of its priests. FRI He considers how the mountain, which has two peaks, embodied FRI the duality of the Andean world view, and its centrality to FRI the Inca creation story. He shows how this story did not FRI disappear but absorbed the new religion, and how, although FRI suppressed, the cult of Pariacaca survives. Javier recalls a FRI friend whose grandmother told him that, rather than the old FRI man sitting in the room, the mountain outside was really his FRI grandfather. Peruvians revere mountains, yet have close, FRI familial relationships with them, and Pariacaca is a FRI mountain with many meanings. FRI FRI Producer: Julian May.
