They rehearse for a week at a time, usually on SAT just one symphony - and as they don’t have a conductor, they SAT examine the music of the classical and early romantic period SAT in almost forensic detail amongst themselves. The result is SAT astounding, as Tom Service finds out when he visits them in SAT their home - a cross between a sports hall and a community SAT centre complete with arcade games and a bowling alley. SAT SAT New Florence Opera House SAT SAT Last December the new Florence Opera House, designed by SAT Paolo Desideri, hosted a week of inaugural concerts, but the SAT first opera production won’t be happening there until SAT November of this year when Zubin Mehta conducts Turandot. In SAT the meantime there’s the small matter of finding 80 million SAT euros to finish the building. Tom takes a guided tour around SAT this impressive arts centre and talks to the artistic SAT director Paulo Arca about the challenges it faces in the SAT midst of Italy’s financial crisis. SAT SAT Jacopo Peri and the birth of opera SAT SAT The composer Jacopo Peri is credited with composing the SAT first surviving opera – Euridice – which was first performed SAT in Florence in 1600. Tom visits the Palazzo Pitti where this SAT event took place, along with other buildings important to SAT the development of the art form, in the company of opera SAT critic Matteo Sansone. He also visits the State Archive with SAT economic historian Richard Goldthwaite to look at newly SAT discovered account books which belonged to Peri and which SAT give a deeper insight into the composer’s life. These three SAT conductor titans - during the 1960s, 70s and 80s - not only SAT captured the public imagination with their music making but SAT quickly grasped the potential for imparting their musical SAT personalities within the rapidly expanding media world. SUN SUN 13:00 The Early Music Show b00n6ykm (Listen) SUN Lully Lullay SUN SUN Lucie Skeaping explores the tender art of the lullaby, from SUN ancient melody to Elizabethan song, and discovers how this SUN most intimate of forms offers inspiration to the world of SUN early music. SUN SUN The act of rocking a child to sleep with a gentle tune is SUN one of our most simple and natural forms of music-making. SUN They are common to all cultures and ages, and though they SUN are varied, they all share remarkable similarities. Their SUN words are soothing, using onomatopoeic and nonsense sounds, SUN like the 'ninna nanna' of Italy and the English 'lulla SUN lulla'. SUN SUN Often these lullabies are passed down from generation to SUN generation and are known throughout regions and countries. SUN But they are also transformed by this oral transmission. SUN Many look outward to nocturnal themes, or to daily chores SUN and the baby itself. SUN SUN Religious themes are also widespread. By its very nature, SUN the lullaby has a certain gentle spirituality and its SUN serenity is particularly suited to the Nativity. It reminds SUN us of Mary's pure devotion to the baby Jesus, her gentle SUN care and the universality of this particular kind of SUN miracle. Many Christmas carols incorporate gentle rocking SUN rhythms, simple structures, repetitive motifs or common SUN phrases, like the 'Lully Lullay' of the well-known Coventry SUN Carol. Many were also well-known secular tunes that were SUN given devotional subjects in an attempt to lead audiences SUN away from profane subjects. Others depict holy figures in SUN easily-recognised scenes from daily life - Joseph rocking SUN the cradle or Mary washing nappies. SUN SUN As well as featuring traditional music, and anonymous SUN composers from around the world, the programme features SUN pieces by English composers Anthony Holborne, William Byrd SUN and John Bennet. Teachers, students, SUN and the pursuit of knowledge have loomed large in many of SUN the great works of fiction. We hear from Dickens’ implacable SUN school master Mr Gradgrind, whose fact-obsessed diatribe to SUN his pupils makes for a troubling insight into Victorian SUN education. Later in the programme, Mary Shelley’s SUN ‘Frankenstein’ offers a glimpse of the darker side of the SUN noble pursuit of knowledge. Some of our best loved pieces of SUN music were composed for educational purposes; Britten’s SUN Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestr’a opens the programme SUN in lively style, later Bartok’s piano music ‘For Children’ SUN may take you back to weekly childhood piano lessons. And in SUN the poem ‘Thanking My Mother for Piano Lesson’s, the poet SUN Diane Wakoski recalls the piano tuition of her youth, and SUN the feelings of joy and security it brought. She recalls SUN tackling pieces by Chopin – and we hear his delicate but SUN joyful Barcarolle underpinning her memories. We move from SUN the pupil’s desk to the other side of the classroom in work SUN which explores the perspective of the teacher. Mr Chips SUN reflects on his first ever struggle to control a class, SUN while a beleaguered school master longs for the bell to ring SUN in D.H Lawrence’s ‘Afternoon in School’. Sir Malcolm SUN Arnold’s film music for ‘The Belles of St Trinians’ offers SUN the perfect mischievous counterpoint to Enid Blyton’s SUN depiction of a French lesson about to go off the rails in SUN Malory Towers. Our journey ends with an arrival; with SUN William Wordsworth recalling his early days at Cambridge SUN University in an extract from ‘The Prelude’. This SUN extraordinary growth in our longevity has continued for over SUN two centuries, thanks to improving better social conditions SUN and science and medicine. But is an ever longer life SUN necessarily a good thing? In his travels to Laputa, Swift's SUN Gulliver discovered that the immortal Struldbrugs were SUN cursed by perpetual infirmity and were shunned and pitied in SUN equal measure by their mortal compatriots. THU THU Taking centre stage in today's episode: Philip Glass's THU remarkable "Songs and Poems for solo cello", written in 2007 THU for his partner, cellist Wendy Sutter, and hailed by critics THU as one of the most original - and remarkable - new works to THU come from the composer's pen: perhaps the finest work for THU solo cello since Britten's Cello Suites. THU THU Before that, Donald Macleod talks to the composer about his THU strong interest - and influence on - contemporary pop and THU rock music, introducing a pop song written by the composer THU for Linda Ronstadt, and his first symphony "Low" (1992), THU directly inspired by the music of David Bowie and Brian Eno. THU We'll also hear from Glass's controversial opera "The THU Voyage", composed for the US quincentennial in 1992, and the THU most expensive commission in the Met's history, and a recent THU dance music remix of the composer's Piano Etude no.2 by the THU Brazilian hip-hop DJ Luciano Supervielle. Waclaw determines to avenge Maria by killing THU his father until Maria's ghost appears, and he decides to THU end his own life instead. THU THU 23:00 Late Junction b01d7grf (Listen) THU Late Junction Sessions, Rory Simmons and Fyfe Dangerfield THU THU Fiona Talkington introduces this month's Late Junction THU Session - a collaboration between Rory Simmons, composer and THU trumpet player with the Loop Collective, and Fyfe THU Dangerfield, best known as the creative force behind indie THU rock band Guillemots, but whose music also embraces lyrical THU love songs and experimental styles. THU THU The monthly Late Junction Sessions bring together musicians THU who have never played together before in a unique studio THU collaboration. "Fyfe and Rory were such fun to work with" THU says presenter Fiona Talkington. "They brought loads of THU instruments, sound samples and tapes, and we ended up with THU so much interesting music, it's our longest Late Junction THU collaboration ever. We're thrilled they enjoyed the THU experience, and that they want to work together again." THU THU Rory Simmons was born in Bodmin in Cornwall, and made his THU name touring across the globe playing trumpet with Jamie THU Cullen's band - his musical interests extend well beyond THU jazz though, and his latest project is the album 'Glass THU Dancers', with compositions for string quartet, electronics THU and percussion. Besides his work as a core member of THU London's Loop Collective, he also leads the band Fringe THU Magnetic, which seeks to mix jazz and experimental music THU with chamber and orchestral colours. THU THU Fyfe Dangerfield's voice became familiar across the UK THU recently with a TV advert which used his cover of Billy THU Joel's song 'She's always a woman'. He is an accomplished THU songwriter in his own right though: 'a great songwriter on THU top form' is how The Telegraph reviewed his 2010 album 'Fly THU Yellow Moon'. However, Fyfe Dangerfield has devoted most of THU his musical energies to his indie rock band Guillemots, THU Mercury Music Prize nominees in 2006 - their latest album THU 'Walk the River' was released last year. He has also THU composed pieces for the City of Brimingham Symphony THU Orchestra and for the cellist Natalie Clein, and leads an THU improvising group Gannets. THU THU This Late Junction session will be available as a THU downloadable podcast.
