SAT SAT 2013 will see Derry as the UK’s first City of Culture and SAT Shona McCarthy, Chief Executive of the Culture Company tells SAT Tom what’s in store. Part of the legacy of this venture SAT will be the Music Promise which will provide equipment, SAT lessons and the chance to perform, to children throughout SAT Derry. NI Opera SAT is the UK’s newest national company and Oliver Mears, the SAT company’s Artistic Director, explains how he plans to SAT connect opera with new audiences and new approaches to the SAT art form. SAT SAT Tom then heads from Belfast’s newest arts venue to one of SAT its oldest – The Ulster Hall which opened in 1862 with a SAT performance of Handel’s Messiah. Over the years the hall SAT has hosted punk banks, boxing, and was the place where Led SAT Zeppelin played Stairway to Heaven for the first time - SAT it’s now the home of the Ulster Orchestra. Jan Carson SAT shows Tom around the hall and tells him its remarkable SAT story. Tom ends his musical survey with a trip to SARC – SAT the Sonic Arts Research Centre at Queen’s University SAT Belfast where he is enveloped in a sphere of sound emanating SAT from forty-speakers. SUN SUN 18:30 Words and Music b01kjtwg (Listen) SUN The Exotic SUN SUN Words and Music on the theme of The Exotic. Readings by SUN Greta Scacchi and Simon Woods. SUN Distant lands full of heat, opulence and mysterious SUN inhabitants; lost civilisations full of entrancing women and SUN god-like warriors have provided vivid inspiration to authors SUN and composers across the centuries. The Exotic has meant SUN different things to different generations: from SUN Shakespeare's visions of a savage island full of unnerving SUN sights and sounds, informed by the era of exploration and SUN brutal empire building in which he lived; to the rich SUN visions of the romantics: Coleridge's Xanadu and Byron's SUN Childe Harolde who wonders in landscapes described with the SUN linguistic lushness of love poetry. Musical and literary SUN experiences of exoticism are often about western artists SUN seduced by a vision of otherness which is little more than a SUN mirage: from Mozart's typically eighteenth century take on a SUN Turkish harem to Kipling's colonial representations of SUN India. Yet from the excitement of imagined faraway lands and SUN people comes the lush beauty of Rimsky-Korsakov's SUN Scheherazade and the delicate orientalism of Debussy's SUN Pagodes. Gustave Flaubert's entrancing Salammbô and SUN Shakespeare's glittering Cleopatra offer visions of exotic SUN womanhood; the goddess who commands adulation and fear in SUN equal measure - like the distant corners of the earth from SUN which she comes. SUN SUN Producer: Georgia Mann. SUN SUN 19:45 Sunday Feature b01kjtwj (Listen) SUN Think Negative! SUN SUN A celebration of nay-saying, refusal, and creative SUN contrariness in cultural history. SUN SUN We live in a culture that puts a premium on positivity and SUN frowns on negativity. The poet, novelist and professor of SUN Comparative Literature at Oxford University, Patrick SUN McGuinness argues that, on the contrary, negative thinking SUN is vital to the life of the mind and the progress of SUN thought. He draws on a long fascination with "negative SUN spaces", inspired by his youthful experiences of Bucharest SUN at the end of the Ceausescu era, a vanishing "city of lost SUN walks", explored in his acclaimed first novel. His current SUN research involves another "negative city", Bruges, which, SUN after its link to the North Sea receded, was cut off from SUN the commerce that once sustained it. Following the huge SUN success of Georges Rodenbach's novel Bruges-la-Morte in SUN 1892, a cult of "dead-Bruges" developed. It was considered SUN the "anti-Paris" of the 19th century, a dark version of the SUN City of Light, and drew tourists for that very reason. SUN McGuinness recreates this anti-grand-tour with Belgian poet SUN Stefan Hertmans. SUN SUN Along the way he reflects how our current era is more likely SUN to repress negativity than make a cult of it. Neuroscientist SUN Tali Sharot argues that, like it or not, we have evolved an SUN "optimism bias", while cultural commentator Barbara SUN Ehrenereich claims that "positive thinking has ruined SUN America and the world". McGuinness traces the changing role SUN of negativity across cultural history: the via negativa of SUN medieval theology; the negative dialectics of modern SUN philosophy; the discovery of negative numbers in maths. SUN Geoff Dyer and John Banville discuss the writers they admire SUN who exemplify and inspire the creative possibilities of SUN negative thinking. SUN SUN Produced by Paul Quinn. SUN SUN 20:30 Drama on 3 b01kjtwl (Listen) SUN The Go-Between SUN SUN A new adaptation of L.P. Hartley's story of a boy who is SUN betrayed by a sophisticated young rich woman and her farmer SUN lover who use him to ferry letters back and forth in the SUN blazing summer of 1900 - with Richard Griffiths and Harriet SUN Walter. SUN SUN It's best known from the 1970 film which focused on the main SUN plot line. But on re-reading the book adaptor Frances Byrnes SUN found within it another drama perfect for radio in which an SUN old man finds a boyhood diary and is forced to unlock the SUN trauma inside. SUN SUN Re-visited by that summer for the first time since it SUN happened, the older man (Richard Griffiths) turns detective. SUN Leo, in his 60s, finds a locked diary in his attic: it was SUN written in 1900, the last time he lived with any sense of SUN possibility. Leo realises that his tidy life has been a SUN living death and that summer was to blame. SUN SUN Missing from the film - and working beautifully for the SUN radio - is a clear incremental, emotional journey of a SUN fragile boy-man, who lives in his imagination and is SUN destroyed by an increasingly separate reality. From the SUN beginning the boy (Oscar Kennedy) is vulnerable (fatherless, SUN socially one-step down, child of a pacifist). Leo struggles SUN to be made whole again; his past and present, reality and SUN imagination, re-integrated. SUN SUN Cast: Richard Griffiths, Dame Harriet Walter, Lydia Leonard, SUN Joseph Arkley, Blake Ritson, Josef Lindsay and Oscar Kennedy SUN who plays the boy in his first major radio role. Oscar was SUN the young Pip in TV's Great Expectations and the young Nigel SUN Slater in Toast. MON MON Michael Nyman's music is instantly recognisable, frequently MON using repetitive piano chords, distinctive instrumental MON combinations often including saxophones, and yet there is a MON familiarity in much of the music, sometimes with a hint of MON Mozart or Purcell. Nyman rocketed to fame in 1992 with his MON score for the film The Piano. The soundtrack went on to sell MON over 3 million copies, and won Nyman an Ivor Novello award. MON Prior to this there had already been many successes, MON including his collaboration with Peter Greenaway on films MON such as The Draughtsman's Contract (1982), and The Cook, The MON Thief, His Wife and Her Lover (1989), or music for the stage MON such as Nyman's opera, The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a MON Hat (1986). MON MON Yet despite these accolades, including BBC commissions, the MON Michael Nyman Band performing at the BBC Proms and all over MON the world, and other awards for the composer, Nyman remains MON a controversial figure. Considered by some as a musical MON archaeologist, Nyman's use, quotation and transformation of MON the music of other composers, has often led to harsh MON criticism. Donald Macleod in exclusive interview with the MON composer, looks at the life and music of Michael Nyman, MON including more recent artistic activities as a photographer MON and film maker. MON MON Michael Nyman's early life is a fascinating account of a MON boy, travelling around London, collecting things such as bus MON tickets, matchboxes and lolly wrappers. This Nyman of the MON past comes to life in the composer's opera, Man and Boy: MON Dada, as Nyman himself explains in conversation with Donald MON Macleod. MON MON Music didn't play an important part in Nyman's formative MON years, until he met Leslie Winters at the Sir George Monoux MON Grammar School, who encouraged Nyman to explore music MON including playing the piano. Nyman frequently performs at MON the piano, directing the Michael Nyman Band. Music from the MON film Wonderland offers the opportunity of hearing Nyman MON performing solo at the piano. MON MON Nyman went on to study music at the Royal Academy of Music, MON and then King's College, London. It was 1964 when Nyman went MON to Wardour Castle, and through his experiences there of MON serialism, he became disillusioned as a composer, and MON subsequently was silent for a decade; although he found MON other outlets as a musicologist and music critic. By the MON late 70s, Nyman was composing again, including his music for MON four or more pianos, 1-100. THU THU In 1992, Michael Nyman's score for the film The Piano, was a THU huge success. The soundtrack went on to sell over 3 million THU copies, and won Nyman an Ivor Novello Award. Despite this THU great achievement, Nyman has felt that this has in some way THU colored people's perception of him when composing away from THU film. Further film successes have followed, including the THU soundtrack to the science fiction film, Gattaca (1997). THU THU The 90s have seen for Nyman a number of significant works THU away from film, including concertos for harpsichord, THU saxophone and cello, and also a concerto for Trombone and THU Orchestra (1995). This piece is a dramatic work, and unlike THU many of Nyman's scores, is based entirely on original THU material. THU THU Nyman has previously said when talking about his film music, THU that visual materials have never inspired him to compose. THU Exclusively in interview with Donald Macleod, Nyman THU discusses his process for writing music for another visual THU medium, opera, specifically his work Facing Goya (2000). THU THU Penny Gore presents a performance of Donizetti's sparkling THU comedy L'elisir d'amore - The Elixir of Love - starring Juan THU Florez and Diana Damrau recorded earlier this year at the THU Metropolitan Opera in New York. To the usual operatic plot THU of the tenor and the baritone being rivals for the love of THU the soprano this witty score adds a wonderful comic bass THU role - Dulcamara, the 'quack doctor' whose magic potion (the THU Elixir of Love itself) causes a good deal of merriment and THU confusion. All ends happily, despite the moment when THU Nemorino contemplates Adina's 'furtive tear'... but that THU gives the opera its best-known aria 'Una furtiva lagrima' - THU Juan Diego Florez's New York performance of which was so THU good he sang it twice.
