SAT SAT Once, classical music had a natural home in holiday resorts SAT across the country: 'Hastings and New Brighton had their own SAT symphony orchestras; the young Malcolm Sargent started out SAT as conductor of the orchestra in Llandudno; Wagner was SAT played in Whitby.' (The Times). But Scarborough Spa SAT Orchestra led the way, based in their magnificent Victorian SAT building on the town's sweeping South Bay. SAT SAT 100 years later they're still there. At a time when SAT orchestras struggle for audiences, conductor Matthew Rowe SAT goes to Scarborough to experience for himself the unique SAT connection between this small group of musicians and the SAT thousands of tourists who come each summer just to hear them SAT play. SAT SAT The leading musicians, conductors and singers of the SAT twentieth century all performed at Scarborough, with names SAT such as violinist Max Jaffa and conductor Alick Maclean SAT drawing huge crowds through the decades. The orchestra plays SAT nine concerts a week, and still generates that kind of SAT anticipation and interest among the audience members. SAT SAT Matthew believes that a conductor must do more than simply SAT turn his back to the room and perform; he must break down SAT barriers and make classical music less daunting for those SAT who are not aficionados. He's intrigued to know the secret SAT of the Spa Orchestra's warm relationship with their SAT audience. SAT SAT Recorded on location in Scarborough during the orchestra's SAT 99th summer season, Matthew Rowe traces this musical SAT survival story. SAT SAT Producer: Serena Field. He is celebrated on July 15th and, SUN according to legend and traditional English rhyme, if rain SUN falls on that day it will continue for the next 40 days. SUN The rain braids its way through this edition Words and SUN Music. The rainstorm is an invitation to pause and step SUN outside the normal stream of everyday time and to reflect or SUN remember; for some an irritant, for others, like Mrs Bennett SUN an opportunity for consolidation of strategic matchmaking SUN and for others a reminder of the power of nature or God and SUN the impotence of man. SUN We begin with a gathering of clouds and a celebration of SUN their names. There follows a sketch of a haymaking downpour SUN and a setting by Finzi of Hardy’s strange invocation of SUN the magic and impermanence of creation: Proud Songsters. SUN A Monsoon raga performed by the Sabri family and the SUN insistence of Ray Bradbury’s description of The Long Rain SUN leads us to the destruction of the Flood a hint of which SUN mythical terror is drummed by even the gentlest of showers. SUN Then a series of lovers "caught" by rain consider intense SUN moments out of time with Chopin's "raindrop" prelude and a SUN lighter moment from Irving Berlin and Fred Astaire. SUN Don Patterson and Langston Hughes offer a more positive take SUN on precipitation and Toru Takemitsu's Rain Spell leads us SUN into a celebration of the sounds of rain and their SUN replication. Seamus Heaney delights in the rain stick and SUN the edition finishes with the optimism of the extraordinary SUN choral Cloudburst by Eric Whitacre. Debussy's score is full of atmospheric suggestion SUN and insinuating eroticism, and it follows the story of the SUN mysterious Mlisande, rescued from the forest by Golaud, who SUN marries her then discovers his half-brother Pellas has also SUN fallen in love with her. SUN SUN This doomed love is the central focus of the opera, but SUN there is much that is opaque, obtuse, elusive. An WED intensely romantic lyricism also characterises Rachmaninov's WED popular concerto, while Prokofiev takes up a darker theme in WED his dramatic 6th Symphony, which looks back to the Second WED World War. WED WED 21:30 Sunday Feature b00yrhff (Listen) WED Great British Ideas, Robert Malthus WED WED In this new series for BBC Radio 3, historian Tristram Hunt WED rediscovers the stories of three ideas that emerged in WED Britain - and then traces how their impact has spread far WED beyond our shores. WED WED In the first programme, Tristram explores how the insight of WED the great British economist, the Reverend Robert Malthus WED (1766-1834), wreaked havoc in 19th century India - and yet WED was later adopted by Indians themselves. Malthus argued that WED the number of people in the world will always tend to WED increase faster than the supply of food to feed them. The WED only way to prevent this was to act to lower the birth rate. WED Or to wait for famine, war and disease to intervene. WED WED Tristram begins in Hertfordshire, among the elegant WED quadrangles of what was once the home of the East India WED Company's training college. Here, he discovers, Malthus WED taught for almost thirty years, shaping the worldview of WED future colonial governors. But soon he follows the trainees' WED journey to India. When famines began to strike India in the WED later 19th century, many administrators responded on WED Malthusian lines. Famine was inevitable. Spending a fortune WED to save lives was at best a "necessary evil". WED WED In Delhi, Tristram visits the site of the astonishing 1877 WED 'Durbar', an eye-popping display of Imperial grandeur - WED which began just as news was emerging of a terrible famine WED in southern India. And he discovers how, amid a week-long WED feast for thousands of dignitaries, one senior British WED administrator was dispatched south. His mission: to stop the WED regional government spending too much money on famine WED relief. WED WED From there, Tristram travels to Chennai (formerly Madras) to WED learn about the apocalyptic horror the region endured, at WED the cost of millions of lives. He listens to a Tamil folk WED song which mourns the suffering of people driven to dig up WED roots and give away their children in their struggle to WED survive. And then - astonishingly - he discovers how WED Malthus' ideas were taken up by Indians themselves, from WED campaigns for contraception in the 1930s to the coercive WED sterilisation campaigns of the 1970s. It THU was a great success at its first performance in 1747 - THU proving even more popular than the Messiah. Handel's THU triumphant score includes the famous Chorus "See, the THU conqu'ring hero comes!" and is celebratory and direct in its THU impact. In tonight's performance, distinguished Handelian THU Laurence Cummings directs the Orchestra of the Age of THU Enlightenment alongside the Choir of the Enlightenment and a THU starry line-up of esteemed soloists. THU THU In his libretto for the oratorio, the Revd Thomas Morrell THU made use of the first book of Maccabaeus, in the Apocrypha, THU as his main source, with the backdrop of the Jewish THU resistance to the Syrian conquest of Judea in 169 BC. THU Following the death of Mattathias, his son Judas is THU proclaimed the new leader of the Israelites by his brother THU Simon. In Act I, Judas promises to fight for and restore his THU people's liberty, and is acclaimed for heroic defeats of two THU invading forces at the beginning of Act II. Following THU further triumph in defeating the Egyptian army outside THU Jerusalem in Act III, the independence of Judea is THU recognised and the promised liberty and peace is secured. THU However, there is indirect contemporary relevance in the THU sentiment of the oratorio's libretto, as Morell drew a clear THU parallel between Judas and the Duke of Cumberland who was THU seen as a heroic figurehead for the English Protestants THU following the 1745 Jacobite rebellion. THU THU Handel: Judas Maccabaeus (1750 version) - Part I THU THU 20:25 Twenty Minutes b01kpyh6 (Listen) THU Judas Maccabeus used to be one of Handel's most popular THU oratorios. But in modern times it's been deplored as THU tub-thumping, bellicose, militaristic. It lent itself all THU too readily to an aryanised Nazi version, Der Feldherr. It THU caused distress when it featured in the 2009 Edinburgh THU Festival, for it appears to celebrate the wipeout of the THU Scottish rebels at Culloden. But when it was first THU performed, that rebellion was long past and Britain was in THU the eighth year of a draining intercontinental war against THU stronger, larger, more successful France. The Scottish THU rebellion was the most frightening of several French THU invasion attempts, exposing British disunity, threatening THU annexation to a foreign Catholic power. The oratorio was THU written and performed in the shadow of continual British THU losses against the French axis. It is suffused with grief THU and fear; it is an exhortation to unity and communal effort; THU it is a prayer for peace; in its own time, its upbeat end THU was rather poignant wishful thinking. And in its original THU form, it didn't include 'See the conquering hero comes'. THU THU Pre-eminent Handel revisionist Ruth Smith looks at the THU autograph score of Judas Maccabeus, which doesn't include THU See the Conquering hero, and looks at contemporary newspaper THU accounts of the notorious (and contemporary) trial of the THU traitor Lord Lovat - the last man to be beheaded in England THU and the real reason why Handel revised the piece. THU THU 22:30 Sunday Feature b00yy94b (Listen) THU Great British Ideas, Young England and Young Ireland THU THU In Great British Ideas, historian Tristram Hunt explores THU ideas which have been developed in Britain or by British THU thinkers and follows their influence abroad. In this THU programme he charts the intellectual currents between THU England and Ireland in the 1840's as two nationalist THU movements emerge onto the political stage. THU THU 'Young England', a Tory clique led by future Prime Minister THU Benjamin Disraeli, wanted to reach back into history, THU glorifying models of English medievalism and feudalism to THU solve the chronic social problems unleashed by the THU Industrial Revolution. Watching it closely, 'Young Ireland' THU was born in Dublin. They were a small group of agitating THU Repealers who also re-imagined Ireland's heroic past as a THU way of forging a new route for Irish nationalism; breaking THU from its father figure, Daniel O'Connell. Both groups THU reacted against mechanistic Utilitarianism, and both groups THU were trying to create a new politics by looking for THU inspiration from the past. But this is also the story of a THU British idea, used to tear apart the United Kingdom of Great THU Britain and Ireland. THU THU By following the influences of Thomas Carlyle, Jeremy THU Bentham, O'Connell, Disraeli and Gladstone, the historian THU Tristram Hunt MP pieces together the flow of ideas between THU these two 'Young' movements as the 'Irish question' began to THU demand an answer. FRI FRI 22:00 Sunday Feature b00z612d (Listen) FRI Great British Ideas, JA Hobson, Lenin and Anti-Imperialism FRI FRI Historian Tristram Hunt explores the surprising tale of a FRI largely forgotten English journalist and economist, John FRI Atkinson Hobson, and the book he wrote which inspired Lenin. FRI FRI Hobson was a bourgeois liberal - the sort of writer one FRI might think a communist hardliner like Lenin would despise. FRI But as Tristram discovers, Hobson's attack on the economics FRI of the British Empire caught the exiled Lenin's attention in FRI the first years of the 20th century - and formed a major FRI part of his own attack on Imperialism on the eve of his FRI seizure of power in the Russian Revolution. FRI FRI Tristram discovers how a visit to South Africa in the FRI descent into the Boer War spurred Hobson into a blistering FRI attack on what he saw as the true motive for Imperial FRI conquest. This was neither glory, nor territorial greed, nor FRI the quest for raw material but a search for new investment FRI opportunities away from an ossified, over-saving British FRI economy. This argument was marred by a strain of FRI anti-Semitism against Jewish city financiers on Hobson's FRI part - despite the fact that his chief target was Cecil FRI Rhodes. FRI FRI Tristram goes on to explore how a shivering, impoverished FRI Lenin arrived in London in 1902, the same year Hobson's FRI controversial book is published. He takes a ride on an FRI open-topped bus, just as Lenin did, to discover how this FRI militant communist marvelled at the capitalist might of the FRI Empire's capital city. FRI FRI He traces how Lenin likely came across Hobson's book in FRI London and took it to Switzerland to translate it - even as FRI Hobson's countrymen were busy ignoring or opposing his case. FRI FRI And he discovers how - with the advent of the First World FRI War - Hobson's notion that imperial rivalry can lead to war FRI seemed to some, Lenin included, like a prescient argument. FRI Tristram hears how this worldview helped to shape Lenin's FRI suspicious attitude to the Western powers once he was in FRI power himself - and how it even helped to shape his domestic FRI economic policy. FRI FRI From there, Tristram traces how, through Lenin, this FRI anti-imperialist critique found its way to the Indian FRI nationalist leader, Jawaharlal Nehru. FRI FRI In the 1930s, as many thought capitalism was entering its FRI death-throes, and as communism and fascism seemed to some to FRI offer a solution, the ideas of Hobson found their way back FRI to Britain - via Lenin. The young communist John Strachey's FRI left-wing ardour led him back to the ideas his elderly FRI liberal fellow-countryman - even as he was doing his best to FRI preach the last rites for liberal Britain. Their FRI language reflects the speech of his native Jamaica, where he FRI was born in 1978, and has a heightened, sometimes Biblical FRI aspect. It sounds almost as if it were written for FRI performance rather than to be read. Yet this is rigorous and FRI literary work. In this essay, Miller reveals how the poetry FRI of the American W. S. Merwin, who worked to communicate FRI experience rather than express a meaning, has a profound FRI effect on his own approach to composing poetry. FRI FRI Producer: Julian May.
