In the composer's centenary year, the singer SAT reflects on the greatness of Britten's vocal music, so much SAT of which was written for the tenor voice. SAT SAT Ian Bostridge brings his singer's experience and deep SAT intelligence to bear on a composer whose work has formed a SAT central part of his repertoire throughout his singing SAT career. He pays tribute to Peter Pears, whose lifelong SAT interpretation of Britten's music he greatly admires. He SAT reflects on why Britten has never been fully absorbed into SAT the mainstream of classical music and considers whether it SAT has something to do with Britten's preoccupation with SAT troubled, alienated characters and situations - exemplified SAT in operas such as Peter Grimes and Turn of the Screw. SAT SAT The subjects of Britten's interest - the ostracized Peter SAT Grimes or the tortured Captain Vere in Billy Budd - are SAT powerfully characterized by the tenor voice. Between the SAT countertenor and baritone, the tenor voice has the capacity SAT to express the nuances of Britten's musical language. SAT SAT In this programme - full of wonderful music from the song SAT cycles, the operas and the choral works - Ian Bostridge SAT contemplates the strangeness of Britten's genius. SAT SAT At its premiere, there were mutterings that the opera's SAT emphasis on an ageing, ungracious monarch was an SAT inappropriate way to celebrate the coronation. But sixty SAT years later it's easier see that with its masterly SAT exploration of the tension between public and private, heart SAT and duty, and its contrasting scenes of grandeur and SAT intimacy, 'Gloriana' is in fact among the finest of SAT Britten's operas. Historian Juliet Gardiner talks to those SUN who knew Barbara Hepworth. Juliet visits Wakefield, the SUN Yorkshire Sculpture Park and St. Ives to talk to those who SUN know Hepworth's work and speaks to her daughter, Lady Sarah SUN Bowness, her granddaughter, Sophie Bowness and Hepworth's SUN son-in-law, Sir Alan Bowness. Interwoven throughout the SUN programme is archive of the artist herself. SUN SUN She was born in 1903 and won a musical scholarship to SUN Wakefield Girls school. A woman with artistic hands who SUN declared as a teenager that she wanted to be a sculptor. An SUN unusual choice too back then with no female role models in SUN the sculpture world. SUN SUN As a young girl, she would enjoy going on drives with her SUN father through the rolling Yorkshire countryside and spoke SUN often of how the undulating landscape informed some of her SUN sculptures. She won a scholarship to Leeds Art School at the SUN age of sixteen and met fellow sculptor Henry Moore there. SUN Together they journeyed south to London and studied at the SUN Royal College of Art. SUN SUN Hepworth went on a travel scholarship to Italy after the RCA SUN and this reinforced her desire to be a carver. She came back SUN married to fellow sculptor, John Skeaping and they settled SUN down in studios in Hampstead. Her first born son, Paul SUN became the model for one of her popular early wooden SUN carvings, 'Infant'. SUN SUN She later married artist Ben Nicholson and in 1934 they SUN became parents to triplets. There's the Cyril Connolly SUN quote: "the pram in the hallway is the enemy of creativity" SUN - they now had three prams and the couple put the triplets SUN into a nearby nursery whilst they carried on with their art. SUN They were both now leading lights in the emerging modernist SUN movement. SUN SUN They decided that with war imminent to leave London and SUN drove to stay with a friend in St. Ives with the triplets SUN and a nanny. For Hepworth, it was to be her home for the SUN rest of her life. Her work is in private and public SUN collections all over the world with her largest work, Single SUN Form, standing outside the United Nations in New York. SUN SUN In the past two years, many visitors have had the chance to SUN see her working methods at the Hepworth Wakefield. SUN SUN Producer: Sarah Taylor SUN SUN First broadcast in May 2011. MON MON Ravel's music will be threaded through the week, alongside MON works by fellow Apaches, Maurice Delage, Déodat de Séverac, MON Florent Schmitt, Paul Ladmirault and Désiré-Émile MON Inghelbrecht. Among the music featured, there are some MON rarely heard gems, performed by the BBC National Orchestra MON of Wales and the BBC Singers. MON MON Donald Macleod begins by looking at the early days of "Les MON Apaches" in the company of Jann Pasler, Professor of Music MON at the University of California. Ravel's set of piano pieces MON "Miroirs" bears dedications to five members of the group, MON while Delage references the painter Paul Sordes, who MON provided the studio where the first meetings took place. MON Déodat de Séverac's music evokes the sunny landscape of the MON Languedoc, and there's a rare opportunity to hear works by MON Paul Ladmirault and by D.E Inghelbrecht, in recordings made MON specially for Composer of the Week by the BBC Singers and MON the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. MON MON At the turn of the twentieth century, Paris was populated by MON a multitude of composers, painters, writers and poets. When MON he was in his mid-twenties, Ravel became part of an informal MON group of artists involved in a range of different MON specialisms. Active in the years running up to the first MON world war, the numbers fluctuated, with anything up to MON twenty-five members. Around the time that the Ballets Russes MON was taking Paris by storm, Stravinsky and Manuel de Falla MON also joined the group. MON MON The earlier musical members of "Les Apaches" were similar in MON age; indeed many of them had met while studying at the Paris MON Conservatory. They included Ravel, and his childhood friend, MON the Spanish pianist Ricardo Viñes, who gave first MON performances of many works by Apache members. We'll also be MON hearing from Maurice Delage, a life-long friend of Ravel, MON who's probably best known to us as the composer of Four MON Hindu Poems, the exotically named minor aristocrat Déodat de MON Séverac whose music is infused with the light and character MON of his roots in Southern France, major chamber and MON orchestral pieces by Prix de Rome winner Florent Schmitt, MON songs and an orchestral piece much admired by Debussy from MON the Breton Paul Ladmirault and some rarely heard orchestral MON works by Désiré-Émile Inghelbrecht. Better known as a MON conductor, Inghelbrecht was an acclaimed interpreter of MON Debussy, holding a series of important musical directorships MON before he formed the Orchestre National de la Radiodiffusion MON Française in 1934. MON MON Admirers of Debussy and Russian music in particular, the MON Apaches took to meeting up once a week to hear each other's MON music and poetry, toss around ideas and share their views on MON the prevailing artistic currents. A group formed casually MON through friendship is often difficult to detail but in this MON case several Apache members left accounts. Dipping into MON these sources, Donald Macleod explores Ravel as he was MON remembered by his friends, in particular Ricardo Viñes, the MON poets Léon-Paul Fargue and Tristan Klingsor (Léon Leclère) MON and the writer and critic Michel Dmitri Calvocoressi. He'll MON also be talking to Jann Pasler, from the University of MON California, San Diego, the author of several studies on the MON Apaches. They'll be fitting the musical jigsaw together, MON illustrating how different professional activities were MON mutually beneficial to Apache members and evaluating the MON group's significance and legacy. Completing TUE the programme are folk tales from Russia and Poland, and the TUE adaptation of George Crabbe's poem "The Borough" that TUE inspired Britten's opera Peter Grimes, and his Four Sea TUE Interludes. TUE TUE Janacek: Suite from The Cunning Little Vixen TUE 2.20pm TUE Alasdair Nicolson: Shadows on the Wall - Five Hauntings for TUE Voice and Orchestra TUE Rowan Hellier (mezzo-soprano), TUE BBC Symphony Orchestra, TUE Alexander Vedernikov (conductor). TUE TUE 16:30 In Tune b033cpd1 (Listen) TUE Derry-Londonderry TUE TUE In Tune celebrates Derry-Londonderry, UK City of Culture TUE 2013, with a special edition hosted by Sean Rafferty live TUE from Christ Church in the city. TUE Sean will be joined by composer Mark-Anthony Turnage ahead TUE of the premiere of his new cantata, At Sixes and Sevens, TUE which will be performed simultaneously in the Guildhall, TUE Derry, and Guildhall London on 3rd July and marks the 400th TUE anniversary of the unique relationship between the two TUE cities. TUE There will be live music from pianist Barry Douglas, who TUE will be directing his orchestra Camerata Ireland in Derry, TUE plus members of city's chamber choir, Codetta, perform - TUE what else? - the famous Londonderry Air! TUE TUE 18:30 Composer of the Week b033c9ym (Listen) TUE [Repeat of broadcast at 12:00 today] TUE TUE 19:30 Radio 3 Live in Concert b033fmc0 (Listen) TUE Alban Gerhardt, Steven Osborne - Beethoven, Britten, Brahms TUE TUE Live from The Stables, Wavendon TUE TUE Alban Gerhardt (cello) TUE Steven Osborne (piano) TUE TUE Brahms: Cello Sonata No.1 in E minor, Op 38 TUE Britten: Cello Sonata in C, Op.65 TUE Beethoven: Cello Sonata in C, Op.102'1 TUE Beethoven: Cello Sonata in D, Op.102'2 TUE TUE Cellist Alban Gerhardt and pianist Steven Osborne visit The TUE Stables in Wavendon for a recital of cello sonatas by TUE Beethoven, Britten and Brahms. All four sonatas are now TUE staples in the cello repertoire. TUE TUE Brahms completed his first cello sonata in 1865 as a "sonata TUE for piano and cello", stating that the piano "should be a TUE partner - often a leading, often a watchful and considerate TUE partner - but it should under no circumstances assume a TUE purely accompanying role". It's a homage to JS Bach, and TUE uses themes from Bach's Art of Fugue which weave in and out TUE of Brahms's own melodic lines. TUE Britten composed his cello sonata in 1960 after hearing TUE Mstislav Rostropovich for the first time - a relationship TUE which would endure for the rest of Britten's life. TUE Beethoven's two last cello sonatas are dedicated to his TUE close friend, the countess Marie von Erdody. He completed TUE them in 1817, by which time Beethoven's deafness was TUE becoming increasingly profound. Critics of the time were TUE often perplexed by Beethoven's last compositions, and one TUE described the sonatas as eliciting "the most unexpected and TUE unusual reactions, not only by their form but by the use of TUE the piano as well. We have never been able to warm up to the TUE two sonatas; but these compositions are perhaps a necessary TUE link in the chain of Beethoven's works in order to lead us TUE there where the steady hand of the maestro wanted to lead TUE us." TUE TUE Presented by Tom McKinney. TUE TUE 22:00 Night Waves b033cx0n (Listen) TUE Matthew Sweet talks to Ben Wheatley about his new film A TUE Field in England. Filmed in black and white on location in TUE that field over twelve days, and set during the English TUE Civil War, madness descends upon a group of deserters after TUE they have assuaged their hunger on local mushrooms. TUE TUE 22:45 The Essay b033d37j (Listen) TUE A Taste of Summer in America, Cheeseheads TUE TUE In the second talk about summer eating in the week that TUE Americans celebrate Independence Day, Nathan Englander TUE samples local cheeses in his adopted town of Madison, TUE Wisconsin. TUE TUE As a child, New Yorker Nathan Englander's only exposure to TUE cheese in a Kosher home, were plastic wrapped slices that TUE his mum used as a topping for her spaghetti with ketchup. TUE Now that he is temporarily living in the university town of TUE Madison Wisconsin, he is discovering a completely different TUE America where he feels very much the curious outsider. TUE TUE Here, cheese is taken seriously and especially celebrated TUE when the long winter is over. Locals call themselves TUE Cheeseheads and wear yellow foam hats at sports events and TUE summer games. The variety of cheeses sold by farmers in the TUE street markets are as exotic and delicious as any cheese TUE Nathan has tasted in France. However what he adores most is TUE a homely dish called cheese curds, which are battered and TUE fried. Perhaps that is because deep down, he is bonded to TUE bland flavourless food, despite all his attempts to run away TUE from it. TUE TUE 23:00 Late Junction b033fmc2 (Listen) TUE Nick Luscombe returns to Late Junction with music from TUE Iannis Xenakis's GRM Works, a track from the forthcoming TUE Case Studies album, Devon folk singer Jim Causley and TUE Japanese sampledelics from Al Dobson Jr and Creol.
