Recorded in a climate of upheaval and SAT protest that has resulted with the deposition of President SAT Mohammed Morsi, Suzy hears how Egyptian cultural identity SAT spans 7000 years of history and includes Pharaonic, Arabic, SAT Coptic and Western Classical music, and that musicians today SAT are taking to the street to defend this plurality of SAT cultural expression. SAT SAT In 1871 Giuseppe Verdi's grand opera Aida was given its SAT world premiere at the newly built Cairo Opera House. In June SAT 2013, on the stage of the new opera house, singers and SAT musicians appeared in full dress once more for a performance SAT of Aida, but this time holding protest placards against SAT interference from the sixth culture minister to be appointed SAT in two years. Suzy speaks to Nayer Nagui, conductor of the SAT Cairo Opera Orchestra, and journalist Ati Metwaly and asks SAT whether the protests within the arts mirror wider unrest SAT across the country, and what role the arts have in SAT protecting cultural diversity in a country of 80 million SAT people. She also takes the artists' concerns to the now SAT deposed Minister for Culture Alaa Abdel Aziz, and asks for a SAT direct response to their allegations. SAT SAT Cultural activist Basma El Husseiny, who runs Culture SAT Resource, a non-governmental arts body, tells Suzy how the SAT fine arts in Egypt have traditionally been associated with SAT ruling elites and that as she takes music, theatre and dance SAT out into deprived communities, the need for new modes of SAT expression amongst the Egyptian people is stronger than SAT ever. SAT SAT One of the most significant religious minorities in Egypt SAT today are the Coptic Christians. Founded in the 1st century SAT AD, the Copts have preserved their music over 20 centuries SAT as an oral tradition. Since the advent of recording SAT technology the Insitute of Coptic Studies in Cairo has been SAT working to catalogue and record this tradition, and now it SAT has been digitised. Dr Michael Ghattas tells Suzy how the SAT music of the Copts can be traced back to Pharaonic times, SAT and why Egypt's Coptic community worry for their future in SAT Egypt today. SAT SAT With a tradition dating back to at least the 14th Century, SAT the Egyptian oud is one of the lynchpins of Arabic classical SAT music. In a suburban flat surrounded by 78rpm gramophone SAT records, archivist and oud player Mustafa Said explains to SAT Suzy how, since the 1950s Arabic classical music has looked SAT to the West for ways to innovate and why he believes it is SAT now crucial that musicians draw inspiration from the SAT classical repertoire of an older era and use this music to SAT find a new way to look forward. SAT SAT Finally, in a small music studio in downtown Cairo, Suzy SAT meets 22 year old composer Bahaa El Ansary, and musician and SAT curator Mahmoud Refat. Refat's "100 Copies" label and venue SAT has been a key player in the experimental music scene in SAT Egypt over the last 10 years, and he talks frankly about SAT how, since 2011, musicians in Egypt are pigeonholed as SAT 'revolutionary' by Western media, to the detriment of the SAT vibrant music scene that has long existed in Egypt. SAT SAT 13:00 The Early Music Show b008xhwh (Listen) SAT A Day in the Life of Louis XIV SAT SAT Lucie Skeaping recreates a possible day in the life of King SAT Louis XIV. Upon waking in his sumptuous bedchamber, the king SAT follows a busy schedule before entertaining guests at supper SAT and retiring late in the evening. SAT SAT 16:00 Opera on 3 b036hzct (Listen) SAT Wagner 200 - Rienzi SAT SAT Wagner 200. John Shea presents the final Opera on 3 of the SAT season, a BBC archive recording from 1976 of Wagner's third SAT opera Rienzi, the Last of the Tribunes in the 1842 version SAT with additional music orchestrated from sketches. SAT SAT Rienzi is a grand opera in 5 acts owing a great deal to the SAT examples of the genre by Meyerbeer and Halévy. The original SAT performance material for Rienzi was destroyed during the SAT Dresden bombings of 1945 as was the score which was SAT apparently given to Hitler as a present and lost in the SAT destruction of his bunker in Berlin. Consequently SAT performances since then, which have been few and far SAT between, have been reconstructions. In the mid 1970s Edward SAT Downes and others worked on the most complete version ever SAT heard which was later published in the Wagner Edition. SAT Wagner scholar John Deathridge tells John Shea about the SAT preparation of the material for this studio recording and SAT there's also a Radio 3 Opera Guide about Rienzi which can be SAT downloaded for free after the broadcast. SAT SAT Rienzi is set in Rome in the middle ages and the central SAT figure is Cola di Rienzi, who leads the populace against the SAT power for the nobles. SAT SAT Wagner based it on the novel by the English writer Henry SAT Bulwer-Lytton published in 1835. He completed it in 1840 and SAT it was first performed in Dresden in 1842 when despite its SAT length it was a considerable success and led to Wagner SAT becoming Kapellmeister at the Dresden Opera the following SAT year. However because of its scale Wagner subsequently made SAT cuts and throughout the 19th century it was often performed SAT in Germany and other parts of Europe and even reached SAT America. Wagner later disowned the work and like his two SAT earlier operas it has never been staged at the Bayreuth SAT Festival, the Wagner festival still run by his descendants. SAT SAT 22:00 Between the Ears b036hzcw (Listen) SAT A Song of Bricks and Mortar SAT SAT Nina Perry's composed feature A Song of Bricks and Mortar SAT explores composition, the creative process and the art of SAT making. It takes its inspiration from this quote by Benjamin SAT Britten: SAT SAT "Composing is like driving down a foggy road toward a house. SAT Slowly you see more details of the house - the colour of the SAT slates and bricks, the shape of the windows. The notes are SAT the bricks and the mortar of the house." SAT SAT Via a compositional road trip, artists in the process of SAT creating and making give insight into their own personal SAT creative process, and what drives them to create. Like a SAT play within a play or a documentary that documents itself - SAT this feature dips its toe into the infinite and timeless SAT nature of artistic creativity as an integral part of being SAT human. SAT SAT The fear of new beginnings, the pleasure of being in flow, SAT moments of illumination, and of being lost; the artists' SAT relationship with the environment and their own interior SAT landscapes are revealed by Sculptor Helaine Blumenfeld, Art SAT Student Imran Perretta, Composer Cheryl Frances-Hoad, SAT Choreographer and Artistic Director of Rambert Dance SAT Company, Mark Baldwin; and a group of people with Dementia SAT and memory problems at a Creative Arts Session run by the SAT Arts development company Verd de gris. SAT SAT Their insights are woven together with a metaphorical SAT motorbike journey performed by violinist Oli Langford and a SAT soundscape of specially composed music. TUE TUE Boccherini on tour with his father in Vienna, was soon TUE longing to return for his native city of Lucca. However upon TUE their return, Luigi was soon disillusioned and wished to TUE leave again, wanting to pursue his musical career elsewhere. TUE Still keeping his contractual ties with Lucca, Boccherini TUE toured Pavia and Cremona with his father. It was around this TUE time that he composed his successful opus two set of TUE quartets, including the second String Quartet in B flat TUE major. TUE TUE Back in Lucca, Boccherini had certain obligations to the TUE city fathers there, and was commissioned to compose for TUE various civic occasions, along with his contractual TUE arrangements to regularly perform. TUE TUE Soon afterwards, Boccherini's father died. Young Luigi TUE accompanied by his friend Manfredi, was able to spread his TUE wings without his family in tow, and they made their way to TUE Paris. WED WED Whilst in Paris, Boccherini was approached by the Spanish WED Ambassador, who proposed that Boccherini and his friend the WED violinist Manfredi, might like to visit Madrid, and that the WED two young men would receive a rapturous welcome from the WED heir to the Spanish throne. Both Boccherini and Manfredi WED travelled to Spain, but their welcome was not what they had WED hoped it would be. In a bid to ingratiate himself with the WED Spanish Prince, Boccherini dedicated his Opus 6 trios to WED him, including the fifth Trio in G minor. This didn't get WED the Prince's attention. WED WED Another Royal patron did however materialise, and this was WED the King's brother, Don Luis, whom Boccherini would go on to WED work for, for many years. Boccherini would compose many WED works dedicated to his royal patron, including sextets, WED quintets, and a set of symphonies, which included the third WED Symphony in C major opus 12. These works steadily began to WED establish Boccherini's reputation in Spain and further WED afield, in particular his set of quintets opus 11. The sixth WED of this set, nicknamed The Aviary, depicts Boccherini's WED patron's passion for exotic birds. WED WED Don Luis would soon fall out of favour with his family and WED the royal court, over his marriage to a lady of non-royal WED blood. This soon meant that Don Luis's court would have to WED move far from Madrid. This isolation would influence the WED works Boccherini went on to compose, given the limited WED number of musicians to hand. However, with a visit to Arenas WED of a famous singer, Boccherini was able compose his first WED setting of the Stabat Mater. However with Don Luis and his court banished to THU Arenas, Boccherini was finding opportunities to compose THU quite limited. THU THU Around a decade later, the Ambassador to Prussia visited the THU Spanish Court in Madrid, where he was honoured by a THU performance of six of Boccherini's string quartets. The THU Ambassador sent a copy of the music to Frederick the Great's THU nephew, Frederick William, who soon sent the composer a gold THU box containing a letter saying how much he had enjoyed his THU music. One of the quartets the Ambassador might have heard, THU was the sixth String Quartet in A major, from the opus 32 THU set. THU THU In the 1780's Boccherini suffered a double blow with not THU only the death of his wife, but also the death of his patron THU Don Luis. FRI FRI Boccherini towards the end of his life, now found himself in FRI quite a predicament. King Carlos III of Spain had now died, FRI and his son, the new King Carlos IV, was less disposed FRI towards Boccherini due to an earlier disagreement. FRI Boccherini had to look for patronage elsewhere, and was FRI subsequently forced to sell a number of his works to the FRI Parisian publishing house Pleyel, for not much money. FRI However, commissions still did occasionally come in, such as FRI from the Marquis of Benavente, who wanted Boccherini to FRI arrange a number of his already composed works to include FRI guitar. One such work, which also included castanets, was FRI the Guitar Quintet in B flat major. FRI FRI Towards the end of Boccherini's life, with his Benavente FRI patrons having left for Vienna, and the composer being FRI forced to sell more of his works for little money to his FRI Parisian publisher, Boccherini started to turn more towards FRI choral writing, such as the responsory Domine ad adjuvandum. FRI Other patrons were to come and ago, including Lucien FRI Bonaparte, who commissioned Boccherini to compose a number FRI of works. The opus 57 piano quintets, Boccherini dedicated FRI to the French nation. FRI FRI In 1805 Boccherini died, probably due to the tuberculosis FRI which had troubled him for most of his life. He was buried FRI in Madrid, but later in 1927 his remains were taken back to FRI his birthplace of Lucca for reburial. Just before he died, FRI he was working on one last String Quartet, in D major, of FRI which only one movement now survives in full.
