This week Donald Macleod MON charts Purcell's activities during their reign. Cutbacks at MON court meant fewer commissions, but even though Purcell was MON asked to write less church music, he was able to cater MON admirably to the Royal taste for music for special occasions MON and write prolifically for the theatre. MON MON Walk along the North Quire Aisle of Westminster Abbey and MON you'll come to the tablet commemorating Henry Purcell. One MON of the pre-eminent musicians of the age, he died, MON unexpectedly and tragically early in 1695 at the age of 37. MON Yet despite the brevity of his life, Purcell left behind a MON rich musical legacy. Indeed, with little in the way of MON biographical detail remaining, it's through his music that MON glimpses of his character emerge. He was a gifted and MON prolific composer who wrote with skill and imagination for MON the opera, the church, theatre, royal patrons and even small MON domestic forces. Born a few hundred yards away from the MON Abbey, just south of Tothill Street, as a child he survived MON the Great Plague and the Fire of London. A chorister of the MON Chapel Royal, he went on to hold positions at court and at MON Westminster Abbey over three reigns, Charles II, James II MON and William and Mary, seemingly able to weather the MON political storms and prosper under each successive monarchy. MON MON Today Donald looks at Purcell's activities at the start of MON William and Mary's reign. Asked to provide music for their MON coronation, Purcell relied on a crafty bit of recycling, MON serving up an Introit he'd written four years earlier for MON Mary's father, the now deposed James II. Shortly afterwards MON he did produce something new, the first of a succession of MON annual birthday Odes for the new Queen. Meanwhile, he was MON looking beyond the court to rekindle his interest in the MON theatre. THU THU Across the week Donald Macleod charts Purcell's activities THU during the reign of William and Mary. Cutbacks at court THU meant fewer commissions, but even though Purcell was asked THU to write less church music, he was able to cater admirably THU to the Royal taste for music for special occasions and write THU prolifically for the theatre. One THU of the pre-eminent musicians of the age, he died, THU unexpectedly and tragically early in 1695 at the age of 37. THU Yet despite the brevity of his life, Purcell left behind a THU rich musical legacy. He was a gifted and THU prolific composer who wrote with skill and imagination for THU the opera, the church, theatre, royal patrons and even small THU domestic forces. Born a few hundred yards away from the THU Abbey, just south of Tothill Street, as a child he survived THU the Great Plague and the Fire of London. A chorister of the THU Chapel Royal, he went on to hold positions at court and at THU Westminster Abbey over three reigns, Charles II, James II THU and William and Mary, seemingly able to weather the THU political storms and prosper under each successive monarchy. THU THU In today's episode Donald Macleod follows Purcell's progress THU at the creative heart of London's theatrical life, when his THU most expensive production, a setting of Shakespeare's comedy THU "A Midsummer Night's Dream" is mounted by the United THU Company.
