SAT SAT 19:30 Radio 3 Live in Concert b052gfpy (Listen) SAT Berlin Philharmonic - Lachenmann, Mahler SAT SAT Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic close their London SAT residency at the Royal Festival Hall with a work significant SAT to both of them. Mahler's epic Second Symphony, beginning SAT with its dramatic, brooding funeral march and ending in an SAT overwhelming affirmation of Christian faith, was premiered SAT in 1895 by the Berlin Philharmonic; and it was the SAT 'Resurrection' Symphony that inspired the eleven-year-old SAT Rattle to be a conductor. Fifty years later it's become SAT something of a Rattle party-piece, a fitting climax to his SAT sixtieth birthday celebrations in London. SAT SAT Providing an upbeat to Mahler's transcendent symphony is SAT Helmut Lachenmann's late 80s 'Tableau', a short, intense SAT work which uses a huge conventional orchestra to SAT unconventional ends. SAT SAT 22:00 Between the Ears b036hzcw (Listen) SAT A Song of Bricks and Mortar SAT SAT Nina Perry's composed feature A Song of Bricks and Mortar SAT explores composition, the creative process and the art of SAT making. It takes its inspiration from this quote by Benjamin SAT Britten: SAT SAT "Composing is like driving down a foggy road toward a house. SAT Slowly you see more details of the house - the colour of the SAT slates and bricks, the shape of the windows. The notes are SAT the bricks and the mortar of the house." SAT SAT Via a compositional road trip, artists in the process of SAT creating and making give insight into their own personal SAT creative process, and what drives them to create. Like a SAT play within a play or a documentary that documents itself - SAT this feature dips its toe into the infinite and timeless SAT nature of artistic creativity as an integral part of being SAT human. SAT SAT The fear of new beginnings, the pleasure of being in flow, SAT moments of illumination, and of being lost; the artists' SAT relationship with the environment and their own interior SAT landscapes are revealed by Sculptor Helaine Blumenfeld, Art SAT Student Imran Perretta, Composer Cheryl Frances-Hoad, SAT Choreographer and Artistic Director of Rambert Dance SAT Company, Mark Baldwin; and a group of people with Dementia SAT and memory problems at a Creative Arts Session run by the SAT Arts development company Verd de gris. SUN SUN In Private Passions, she talks about her upbringing in SUN Yorkshire, one of three daughters - and about being in such SUN a minority when she began to study law. Lady Hale chooses SUN music which connects with her professional life: operas SUN about crime, punishment and injustice (Beethoven's Fidelio SUN and Britten's Billy Budd). She talks about how she'd like to SUN change the law on divorce, and why she loves Mozart's The SUN Marriage of Figaro. She discusses the conflict between SUN reason and emotion in her work, and reveals that she is SUN haunted by certain cases from the past. With readings by SUN Jonathan Pryce and Jenny Agutter from Shakespeare, Dickens, SUN TS Eliot and Tennyson, and music from Poulenc and SUN Schoenberg. SUN SUN This edition is about actual saints - such as St Simeon SUN Stylites and St Joan, and about the saintly - such as Amy SUN Dorrit from Dickens' novel who selflessly looks after her SUN father. SUN SUN We hear about the fall of Th' infernal Serpent from Heaven SUN in Milton's Paradise Lost, whilst one devil writes to SUN another in one of CS Lewis's Screwtape Letters. There's a SUN reading of the poem about sin that inspired Schoenberg's SUN music of the same name, Verklärte Nacht. SUN SUN And there's music from the final scene of Poulenc's SUN Dialogues des Carmélites, when the nuns go to the guillotine SUN during the French Revolution. SUN SUN Producer Note SUN SUN This edition of Words and Music comprises meditations on the SUN theme of Saints and Sinners. SUN SUN The programme opens with brief definitions of Sin from the SUN Catechism. SUN SUN The first sin described in the programme is in Richard SUN Dehmel’s poem, Verklärte Nacht which describes a woman SUN ‘carrying a child… in a state of sin’. We hear part of the SUN music which the poem inspired Schoenberg to write. SUN SUN The first saint we meet is St Joan, from Bernard Shaw’s play SUN of the same name, in the speech where she is facing the SUN prospect of imprisonment; this passage leads into music from SUN the final scene of Tchaikovsky’s Maid of Orleans in which SUN Joan is burned at the stake. SUN SUN Devils take the stage next – the older devil Screwtape SUN writing to his nephew Wormword on the nature of sin in SUN relation to the human being (the ‘patient’). Suitably SUN seedy-sounding music from Charlie Mingus – the Black Saint SUN and the Sinner Lady – follows. SUN SUN There are two pieces on the theme of St Cecilia, patron SUN saint of music – a poem by Cornelius O’Brien and part of SUN Britten’s Hymn to St Cecilia with words by Auden. SUN SUN In typically dense, elliptical language, John Donne in The SUN Annunciation, one of John Donne’s Holy Sonnets describes the SUN child that Mary will have as one ‘which cannot sin, and yet SUN all sins must bear’. SUN SUN Music written by Shostakovich for a film version of SUN Shakespeare’s King Lear leads to a pivotal scene in the SUN play. Lear sees himself as ‘a man more sinn’d against than SUN sinning’ but then turns to the Fool, showing compassion for SUN the first time, ‘How dost my boy? Art cold?...I have one SUN part in my heart that’s sorry for thee yet’. This moment of SUN calm and reflection at the heart of the play leads to SUN pensive piano music by Liszt. SUN SUN Saint Francis is celebrated in his famous Canticle to SUN Brother Sun, illustrated by music from Sofia Gubaidulina. SUN SUN The theme of imprisonment links the next three items; the SUN rebellious angels in Paradise Lost are thrown out of heaven SUN to dwell in ‘their Prison ordain’d in utter darkness’. SUN Henze’s Prison Song leads into a passage from Dickens in SUN which Little Dorrit tenderly looks after her father William SUN in prison without a thought for herself. The description of SUN her saintly behaviour, wanting nothing for herself, leads to SUN Bach’s aria Ich habe genung, ‘I have enough’ or ‘I am SUN content’. SUN SUN Tennyson’s grumpy, bad-tempered St Simeon Stylites who has SUN sat on a pillar for three decades in the hope of sainthood SUN enduring ‘Rain, wind, frost, heat, hail, damp, and sleet, SUN and snow.’ His mood is illustrated by music from Webern. SUN SUN George Herbert’s meditation on the difficulty of avoiding SUN Sin is followed by Thomas Attwood’s anthem Turn Thy Face SUN from My Sin. SUN SUN Finally, the theme of martyrdom, which began early in the SUN programme with St Joan, is explored further. We hear a poem SUN and music about Archbishop Oscar Romero who Pope Francis has SUN just confirmed died as a martyr (1). The fourth knight from SUN TS Eliot’s Murder in the Cathedral urbanely justifies the SUN assassination of Archbishop Thomas Becket in Canterbury SUN Cathedral. And the programme ends with Carmelite nuns going SUN to the guillotine during the French Revolution, the final SUN scene from Poulenc’s opera Dialogues des Carmélites, singing SUN as they are beheaded one by one. SUN SUN Producer Nick Holmes SUN SUN 18:45 Sunday Feature b052glgk (Listen) SUN Cuba Clasica SUN SUN Before the 1959 Revolution, Havana was a stopping-off point SUN on the international classical concert and opera circuit. SUN Social changes brought with them cultural changes from the SUN 1960s onwards, and the opportunities for exchange with SUN Western classical artists diminished. More recently, Cuba's SUN popular musical culture has been exported worldwide thanks SUN to the Buena Vista Social Club phenonenon, but is there a SUN thriving classical music scene in Cuba today? Andrew SUN McGregor visited Havana last autumn to find out, meeting SUN performers, students, teachers, radio presenters and SUN academics. SUN SUN For a small island in the Caribbean, Cuba has played a SUN significant part in world events. But in recent years it is SUN the traditional music which has captivated the world, with SUN son, salsa and cha-cha-cha. The island's other major (and SUN officially supported) cultural phenomenon is ballet; Cuba's SUN dance schools have produced famously athletic male dancers, SUN Carlos Acosta being the best-known outside Cuba today. SUN SUN Cuba's classical music credentials may be less obvious, but SUN these can be traced back to the Spanish colonisers who SUN introduced their own art forms. The island's first native SUN classical composer, Esteban Salas, was born in Havana in SUN 1725, and his music has been rediscovered by Cuba's SUN fledgling Early Music movement. In the 19th century the most SUN influential composer was Ignacio Cervantes. His Danzas are SUN exquisite piano miniatures which deserve greater recognition SUN today. SUN SUN In the 1940s and 50s, shortly before the Revolution, Havana SUN was a part of the international concert circuit. The Havana SUN Philharmonic had a strong reputation under the baton of SUN Erich Kleiber, and famous names such as Pablo Casals, Renata SUN Tebaldi, Artur Rubinstein, and Jascha Heifetz all performed SUN there. SUN SUN In Havana today music of all kinds is everywhere: on the SUN street, in the bars, and in the churches and theatres, but SUN there are fewer boundaries - Cubans don't pigeonhole music SUN into different types. Two major choral MON works, several orchestral works, six operas and a MON significant body of chamber music, attest to her seriousness MON of purpose as a composer. However, the sheer gusto and MON number of other activities the ebullient Smyth pursued have MON tended to obscure her artistic reception. A keen traveller, MON she was a successful author, producing 9 largely MON autobiographical books. This time it is the title role in MON Iolanta. She is the beautiful blind girl who experiences MON love for the first time in Tchaikovsky's lyrical fairy tale MON opera. The second part of this double bill is the intense MON drama of Bartok's Bluebeard's Castle. Nadja Michael sings MON the role of Judith. She is the new wife and unwitting victim MON of Bluebeard, sung in this production by Mikhail Petrenko. MON Judith persuades Bluebeard to open seven doors in his MON castle. But this picture MON has had an enormous impact on the world of medicine and our MON relationship with our bodies. MON The photograph of Anna Bertha Ludwig Rontgen's left hand MON taken in 1896 astounded the scientific world and alarmed the MON public. For the scientists it signalled the beginning of MON medical radiography. For the public it gave rise to fears MON about intrusion and privacy in much the same way as the MON introduction of the TSA body scanner did in 2007. MON MON Known for their trailblazing approaches, Robert Glasper and MON Jason Moran are two of the leading lights in Blue Note MON Records' current roster and play here for its 75th birthday MON celebrations. Two grand pianos adorn the stage at London's MON Royal Festival Hall for a set that reflects their MON longstanding friendship and mutual appreciation of each MON other's music. MON MON Free-flowing exchanges twist and turn through the type of MON soulful grooves that Glasper fans will know from his Grammy MON Award-winning work with his Experiment band, whilst Moran MON brings flavours of the blues and avant-garde to the melting MON pot. Amongst virtuosic solos there are fleeting nods to Blue MON Note's vast back catalogue, including its first ever boogie MON woogie recording and a meditation on Herbie Hancock's MON classic, 'Maiden Voyage'. TUE TUE Philip Dodd asks a panel of experts on these hugely TUE influential tales, plus story-tellers who continue to wrest TUE new life out of them, to discuss their continuing relevance TUE in the age of globalisation. TUE Scholars Robert Irwin and Wen-chin Ouyang and theatre TUE director, Tim Supple recount their own experience of how TUE stories of Scheherazad, Jinns, Hunchbacks and Sindbad the TUE Sailor work in time and space and explore just why TUE essentially urban folk tales, some of which date from the TUE earliest centuries of the Arab Empire, and which were TUE largely compiled during the Islamic Golden Age, should still TUE have relevance for understanding today's increasingly TUE complex mega-cities. TUE TUE Philip also talks to the lebanese novelist Hanan al-Shaykh TUE about the way in which artists have used the idea of TUE embedding one story inside another inside another. Hanan TUE al-Shaykh's own One Thousand and One Nights: A New TUE Re-Imagining was the result of total immersion in all the TUE known texts. TUE TUE Robert Irwin, in his Arabian Nights: A Companion and in TUE other works has shown its massive influence on artists, TUE writers, film-makers, in the modern period while Wen-chin TUE Ouyang has explored how the stories came to inspire the East TUE as well as the West and edited The Arabian Nights: An TUE Anthology. Tim Supple travelled across the modern TUE Arab-speaking world whilst developing his multi-national TUE production of the Nights for the theatre. TUE TUE How to live in cities? How to make your marriage work? What TUE are the limits of the law? Reflections on the relationship TUE between morality, ethics, the law, secular power to the TUE divine - questions and arguments about how to live and where TUE to live at a time of huge social, religious and political TUE flux in the middle ages echo many of our struggles today.
