SAT SAT KAROL SZYMANOWSKI SAT SAT This month the Royal Opera House presents Karol SAT Szymanowski's powerful last opera King Roger, in a new SAT production directed by Kasper Holten and conducted by SAT Antonio Pappano, with the Polish baritone Mariusz Kwiecien SAT in the title role. In this edition of Music Matters, Tom SAT Service travels to Poland to explore the life and music of SAT the most celebrated Polish composer of the 20th century, and SAT discovers how Szymanowski’s operatic masterpiece symbolises SAT one of the central themes in the composer’s life, a struggle SAT between human reason and sensual desire. SAT SAT Karol Szymanowski was born into a wealthy land-owning Polish SAT family in Tymoszowka, in what is now Ukraine. He studied SAT music with his father, and at the State Conservatory in SAT Warsaw. Musically, his influences spanned the Romantic SAT German school of Wagner and Strauss, the works of Russian SAT composers Scriabin and Stravinsky, and the French SAT impressionism of Debussy, but he was also hugely influenced SAT by the mystical and oriental music he encountered during his SAT travels to North Africa and the Middle East. His works, the SAT most well-known of which include his third symphony ‘The SAT Song of the Night’ and the first of two violin concertos, SAT demonstrate Szymanowski’s desire to create music which SAT celebrates Polish values yet speaks to a universal audience. SAT SAT Throughout his life, Szymanowski was also fascinated by the SAT folk music of Poland, and developed a strong association SAT with the town of Zakopane in the foothills of the Tatra SAT Mountains, where he often visited friends, and spent his SAT final years in a rented house, Villa Atma (Sanskrit for SAT ‘Soul’). His most directly folk-influenced work, the SAT ballet-pantomime Harnasie, was written in that final period SAT of his life. At Villa Atma, now a museum dedicated to SAT Szymanowski’s life and works, Tom is joined by the writer SAT and Polish Radio host Alek Laskowski, and local guide Maciej SAT Krupa. The music which Szymanowski quoted in Harnasie is SAT brought alive in the house by group of local musicians, who SAT maintain the region’s folk traditions as the composer SAT himself would have heard. SAT SAT In Krakow, 70 miles north of Zakopane, Tom meets two of SAT those teaching a new generation about Szymanowski and his SAT legacy for Polish music at the Academy of Music, the SAT musicologist Malgorzata Janicka-Slysz and violinist Kaja SAT Danczowska, who feels a strong connection with the composer SAT through her mentor Eugenia Uminska. And the Canadian-born SAT pianist Janina Fialkowska, who was mentored by Arthur SAT Rubinstein, for whom Szymanowski wrote many of his piano SAT works, explains the music’s technical challenges, and why it SAT still appeals to today’s audiences. SAT SAT 13:00 Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert b05s355w (Listen) SAT Franco Fagioli with Academia Montis Regalis SAT SAT Argentinean countertenor Franco Fagioli, an acclaimed SAT interpreter of Porpora's vocal works, performs arias by SAT Porpora and Handel with the Academia Montis Regalis. The SAT programme is interspersed with Vivaldi concertos, recorded SAT at last year's Ambronay Festival. SAT SAT 14:00 Saturday Classics b05s3565 (Listen) SAT Dance, Wayne Sleep SAT SAT As part of the BBC Dance season, ballet dancer and SAT choreographer Wayne Sleep presents his choice of some of his SAT favourite music, including works by Tchaikovsky, Delibes, SAT Grainger and Andrew Lloyd-Webber. SAT SAT 16:00 Jazz Line-Up b05s356b (Listen) SAT Mark Edwards and the Cloggz - Part 2 SAT SAT Julian Joseph presents the second instalment of a concert SAT performance by pianist Mark Edwards and The Cloggz, recorded SAT in concert at the South Coast Jazz Festival, featuring a SAT thrilling mix of jazz, tango and cinematic soundscapes. SAT Their line-up features Mark Edwards (piano), Julian Nicholas SAT (saxophones), Ben Sarfas (violin), Dave Trigwell (drums), SAT Neil Corrin (accordion), Terry Pack (bass), Eden Townend SAT (guitar) and joining the band on some numbers is vocalist SAT Imogen Ryall. Also on the programme Kevin Le Gendre features SAT a classic album of recent times in his monthly feature SAT 'Now's The Time', plus journalist Sebastian Scotney profiles SAT the Audio B record label who celebrate their 25th SAT anniversary this year. SAT SAT 17:30 Opera on 3 b05s356s (Listen) SAT Live from the Met, Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana and SAT Leoncavallo's Pagliacci SAT SAT This evening's Opera on 3, Live from the Met, is the SAT ever-popular double bill Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci. SAT Both are set in southern Italy, one group of characters SAT celebrating Easter, and the other the fun of the fair. But SAT all is not as it seems, and concealed adultery and jealousy SAT in both stories lead to tragic endings.
