MON MON He took the 'land of the clavier', Vienna, by storm, MON becoming something of a pioneer in composing piano MON concertos, this week Donald Macleod explores the life and MON music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. From his early beginnings MON in Salzburg as a child prodigy, being paraded by his father MON around Europe performing for kings and queens, and up until MON his early death in Vienna, Mozart was a prodigious composer MON in many genres including chamber music and opera. It was his MON talent as a pianist that really had audiences speechless in MON Vienna. He organised subscription concerts in the MON Auergarten, arriving on stage in a succession of fancy MON coats, and then proceeded to amaze his listeners with his MON latest piano concertos. This week Donald Macleod focuses MON each day on one of Mozart's piano concertos, and the period MON in which it was composed. MON MON Nannerl said of her brother Wolfgang, that he had to be MON restricted from composing or practicing the keyboard at all MON hours. The child Mozart was a prodigy, and was keen to show MON off his talents. His father Leopold took Nannerl and MON Wolfgang on a number of trips around Europe, where they MON performed for the nobility and royalty. Mozart's main MON instrument was the harpsichord, but he also took to the MON violin. One of his first works to appear in print was his MON sonata for keyboard with violin accompaniment in C major K6. MON MON Leopold described his son as a miracle which God caused to MON be born in Salzburg. TUE TUE Relations between the Archbishop of Salzburg and one of his TUE employees, young Mozart, were not going well. The Archbishop TUE found Mozart insubordinate and rebellious, and forbade him TUE to compose any further symphonies. Instead Wolfgang was TUE expected to regularly churn out suitable entertainment music TUE for his employer including serenades, marches, and TUE divertimenti, including his Divertimento in F major No 10 TUE K247. TUE TUE Mozart however pushed against the boundaries where he could, TUE including writing a series of violin concertos. It was TUE however for a visiting French pianist that Mozart composed TUE the first of his great piano concertos, No 9 in E flat major TUE K271. He wrote this work in the month that he turned TUE twenty-one, and there was a sense of dialogue between the TUE soloist and the orchestra, which was quite new for listeners TUE at that time. WED WED In the early 1780s, Mozart was making his way as a freelance WED musician in Vienna. He'd finally left the employment of WED Archbishop Colloredo in Salzburg, and was now dazzling WED Viennese audiences with his music, such as his the Rondo in WED D major K382 for piano and orchestra. His latest opera Die WED Entführung aus dem Serail also had quite an impact in WED Vienna, even though Emeperor Joseph II was supposed to have WED said that the music was too beautiful, and "a monstrous many WED notes". WED WED On top of Mozart's growing popularity, there was another WED reason for his interest for remaining in Vienna. Wolfgang WED had previously fallen in love with Aloysia Weber, but she WED was now married. His affections turned to her younger sister WED Constanze, whom he then married. During this same period, WED Mozart's career as a virtuoso performer in Vienna was in the WED ascent. In partnership with a musician called Martin, he WED organised and gave a number of subscription performances. At WED these concerts which often included in the audience the WED Emperor, Mozart wowed his public with his artistry, WED performing his latest works including the Concerto No 13 in WED C major K415 for piano and orchestra. WED WED 13:00 Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert b05sy580 (Listen) WED Glasgow RCS - Poulenc, Episode 2 WED WED Former Cardiff Singer of the World winner, Nicole Cabell and WED pianist Simon Lepper celebrate Poulenc's profound love for WED the contemporary poets of his day in Paris in this recital WED from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow. WED WED Banalités' is a group of five songs from various sources of WED which, 'Hotel' and 'Voyage a Paris' come from a group of WED short poems also entitled 'Banalités' by the poet WED Apollinaire which appealed to him because of their WED silliness. The group of poems are disparate and have no WED obvious thematic thread however his settings, beautifully WED illuminate the sometimes obscure texts. WED WED The poetry of Louise de Vilmorin gave Poulenc the WED opportunity to write specifically for the female voice in WED 'Fiancailles pour rire'. The cycle begins with the WED expression which has come to represent the duality of WED Poulenc's musical personality -) the monk and the street WED urchin - the sublime alongside the ridiculous. The final WED song of the cycle, "Fleurs," is one of those grave songs of WED love and loss that no one else but Poulenc could have WED composed. WED WED Poulenc's works are contrasted with two well-known song WED cycles by his older contemporary, Maurice Ravel; the WED magically evocative song cycle Shéhérazade originally WED written for soprano (or tenor) and orchestra and his Cinq WED populaires grecques which were written around the same time WED for voice and harp to illustrate a lecture his friend Pierre WED Aubry was giving on Greek folk song. They are all popular WED songs which range in mood from the carefree 'Tout gai', to WED the atmospheric and meditative 'La-bas, vers l'eglise'. THU THU Shostakovich's final symphony, his 15th, seems to sum up THU much of the composer's life: but can also be seen as THU exploring new ground. In the midst of a rich web of musical THU quotations, references to Rossini and Wagner, sits music THU which encompasses the classicism of Mozart and Haydn and THU modernistic rhythmic invention and techniques of serialism. THU As always with Shostakovich the Symphony treads lightly, and THU heavily, between the forces of darkness and light. THU THU From 40 years earlier, the composer's first piano concerto THU seems an altogether brighter affair - bursting with humour THU and wit. The soloists, pianist Garrick Ohlsson and BBC SSO THU principal trumpet Mark O'Keeffe, engage in sardonic THU exchanges in music full of jazz-inflected rhythms, dazzling THU colours, and trumpet fanfares. THU THU And the concert opens with another fanfare, by a composer THU who seems to stand outside the usual categories of music THU history: Janacek. It was then that he FRI completed his final piano concerto, No 27 in B flat major FRI K595, although the paper he used to write this work, FRI suggests that this concerto dates from an earlier period. FRI Money remained tight for Mozart, and so he accepted a FRI mysterious commission for a Requiem. In the last hours FRI before his death, Mozart dictated this work to his pupil FRI Süssmayer, and puffed out his cheeks imitating the sound of FRI the timpani passages. FRI FRI Haydn: The Creation Part I FRI FRI 8.15 Nicola Heywood Thomas talks to Stephen Layton about his FRI work with the Choir of Trinity College Cambridge and FRI Polyphony, with music by David Briggs and Karl Jenkins. FRI FRI 8.35 FRI Haydn: The Creation Parts II & III FRI FRI Elizabeth Watts (soprano) FRI Allan Clayton (tenor) FRI Matthew Brook (bass) FRI BBC National Orchestra of Wales FRI Stephen Layton (conductor) FRI FRI "When I think of God I can only write joyful music" said FRI Joseph Haydn when he began to write what is generally FRI accepted as his masterpiece. Taking collective inspiration FRI from Genesis, the Psalms and John Milton's epic poem FRI 'Paradise Lost', The Creation is a work of musical FRI invention, a sensational biblical homage to our living FRI planet. It also owes a debt to another great choral composer FRI from the eighteenth century - Handel. Haydn first heard FRI performances of Messiah and israel in Egypt in London in FRI 1791, with a massive chorus and orchestra numbering over FRI 1000 people. The impact was immense, and he immediately FRI remarked to a friend that he should like to write something FRI similar, but was stuck for a libretto. In return the friend FRI thrust a Bible into Haydn's hand and said "begin at the FRI beginning!" The final result gives a lasting impression of FRI uncomplicated joy in the world, from the pen of a 66 year FRI old composer.
